STUDENT GOVERNMENT EXPERIENCES STATE GOVERNMENT On Tuesday, March 11, Student Council Officers served as PAGES at the State Capitol
during a busy legislative day. They were guests of Representative David Wilkerson
(District 38) , an active Floyd parent. Ms. Trina Williams, Student Council Sponsor said,
“The day was electrically filled with action!” Also accompanying the students was Ms.
Melissa Sanacore. Students pictured left to right: Tyree Jackson, Akilah Williams, David

SOCIAL STUDIES
This last grading period, in sixth grade, we will be heading to downtown Atlanta for JA BizTown, which is part of
the Junior Achievement program to allow our students to interact in a mock business world. This will be a great way
to apply our economic standards that we have been learning about this year. We are currently in the process of closing
up our studies of Latin America. Our journey to our southern neighbors will end with a DBQ (Document Based Ques-
tion) on the Aztec people. We will then be off to the South Pacific and Australia. We will get to learn about the geogra-
phy, history, and culture before starting on our CRCT Review. We will have a few weeks of review of all of the sec-
tions to prepare for the Assessment. After the CRCT, some students will be able to tackle a third DBQ before finishing
the year with our End of the Year Project, Create a Nation.
In seventh grade social studies we are packing up and moving from Africa into South and East Asia! In Africa we
learned about Nelson Mandela and his life’s work. We also completed a novel study and learned all about Africa’s his-
tory and culture. Next, we are excited to learn about the culture, history, economies, and government systems of the
East. While here, we will learn of several important historic figures such as Siddhartha Gautama, Ho Chi Minh, Mahat-
ma Gandhi, Mao Zedong, Confucius and the list goes on. We will also do a DBQ entitled “What made Gandhi’s nonvi-
olent movement work?”
Eighth grade students have been busy working on their mini-DBQs on Civics. The title of the mini-DBQ is "Should
Schools Limit Students' Online Speech?" Students were responsible for taking a stance on the issue, then using docu-
ments to support their response. Many students will culminate or have culminated the mini-DBQ by entering their es-
says into Essay Scorer, a program also utilized in Language Arts.
MATH In sixth grade we will continue to prepare to exceed the CRCT!
We are currently working on Unit 6 -“Statistics.” We will complete Unit 7- “Rational Explorations/Numbers and their
opposites” before the CRCT. We will end 4th quarter with Unit 8-“Show What We Know.”
The IXL Lab (6th grade lab) will be open every morning a 8am Monday thru Thursday. Students are encouraged to
come and practice math in the mornings. Parents please drop students off at the bus ramp.
Please continue to check our blogs for updates and important announcements.
On behalf of 6th Grade Math, we thank you choosing Floyd!
Seventh grade math is wrapping up our Unit 5 – Geometry. The students are completing a unit project. We will be
completing our final unit on Probability right after Spring Break. Please continue to log in to the IXL math website and
practice at least 3 hours a week. Another great resource is khanacademy.org for tutorial videos that cover just about
every math topic. As we approach the final days before CRCT, let’s Rise Up to greatness and manifest our brilliance!!
Math 8 students are working hard to prepare for the CRCT on April 25th!! We are finishing up unit 6, which deals
with rate of change, initial value, linear models, and scatter plots. We will complete unit 7, which covers systems of
equations before Spring Break. After Spring Break we will review everything that has been taught this year! Please be
sure that you are working hard at school every day and practicing your math standards on your own time to ensure that
you are ready to pass the CRCT!! Don’t forget that IXL is a great way to practice your Math 8 skills!!
LANGUAGE ARTS
March 19,, 2014 Page 3
Language Arts classes have had a busy quarter! We've enjoyed novel studies; reading, discussing, and
writing about various literary forms; as well as preparing for the CRCT. Please remember to use Skills
Tutor to review important reading and grammar skills. Go to myskillstutor.com and use the following log-
in information:

Sixth grade Scienc Speaking of Hydrology,
how about that snow?
The recent snow days
corresponded with our
hydrology unit. The
distribution of earth’s
water, and the water cy-
cle, topography of the
world’s oceans was cov-
ered the third nine
weeks. Students discov-
ered the water cycle and
distribution of earth’s
water through power-
points, web quest inves-
tigation and brain pop
videos. We are current-
ly studying wave, cur-
Science Moves, Energy Transformation and more…
During the 3rd nine weeks eighth grade focused on all aspects of ENERGY! Students became familiar with the forms and transfor-
mations of energy. Our goal was to help all students increase their concept skills by learning to use observation, critical thinking, and
hands on learning to increase motivation and promote mastery levels in science. At the conclusion of the nine weeks, students were
All Wired Up as they worked through electrical concepts such as series and parallel circuits. Students were able to apply the concepts
learned in the classroom to real life when they were able to actually explain how a building is WIRED!

art@Floyd adventures: Floyd students from quarter one and two have been busy creating masterpieces! These amazing pieces and
many more produced in quarter three are proudly displayed at our Mable House Gallery exhibit March 11 –
April 2. Mark your calendar for our opening night reception on March 11, 7-8:30 pm. Special thanks to
the South Cobb Arts Alliance for sponsoring this event. We love and appreciate the South Cobb Arts Alliance,
Mable House staff, Chick Fil A, Floyd PTSA, Foundation 2000, Robin Meyer, Michael’s Arts and Crafts, Hob-
by Lobby, and Kroger for the many ways they encourage and support Floyd’s talent!!!
This has been a busy and eventful nine weeks for students in the ESOL classes! All ESOL students participated
in the ACCESS Test to determine their level of competency when using the English language in the linguistic
domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Results of the ACCESS test should be available in May.
Students were also able to attend two library presentations given by Mrs. Penny Chaney. Mrs. Chaney is work-
ing with the ESOL classes to increase the students’ awareness of available websites that can improve both their
use of the English language and their performance in the content area classes. In addition to regular class work,
all ESOL classes are completing novel studies. This past nine weeks the 6th grade classes have read Huckle-
berry Finn, the 7th grade classes have read The Man in the Iron Mask, and the 8th grade classes have read Great
Expectations. One more nine weeks session to go: let’s continue to read and do our best to achieve success on
the CRCT!

FLOYD STUDENTS ARE RESEARCHING, and PRODUCING!! Here are just a few of the highlights
from 3rd quarter.
6th grade social studies students researched the provinces of Canada and shared their newly acquired exper-
tise with their peers in a variety of presentation formats.
7th grade science used the iPads and online tools to MASTER their standards on genetics. Ask them to ex-
plain Punnett squares and phenotypes and heterozygous genotypes, OH, MY! They know it ALL!
7th grade general music classes refined their skills in rhythm and notation with online tools and the 8th grade
general music classes researched music by the decades to create their own music videos. Floyd’s music de-
partment ROCKS!
8th grade language arts classes hosted visitors from every grade level and from the Floyd community for the
Career Fair. This year’s group did an outstanding job. They are clearly ready to take on the world!
