In conversation with Andrew Redelmeier

A second generation winemaker preparing to take over the vines at Canada’s first biodynamic winery

2016 Q2 Quarterly

What was it like to grow up in your family business?

I have been around agriculture and eventually wine my whole life. It certainly was a pretty special childhood being able to grow up on 250 acres of working farm. While I envied my friends who had neighbour kids right next door, the possibilities for a young imagination with that kind of space were endless. Once I got older and we moved the operation down to Niaga-ra-on-the Lake, it was fascinat-ing to watch my parents build up Southbrook 2.0 essentially from scratch. I am certainly very proud of them.

What challenges exist with your currnet role within your family business?

My current role with Southbrook is mostly made up of being an ambassador for the winery at events and when dealing with restaurants. I think the obvious challenge for anyone who is of a second generation in a company is blazing a trail for oneself. Even though you want to continue on with the successful part of the branding and mission of the company, there is also a strong feeling of independence.

I think that is one reason I want-ed to work towards my som-melier diploma; I would become the first one in my family to do so and that uniqueness is very appealing.

Tell us what you’re enjoy-ing most about the Certified Wine Sommelier Certificate, considering you went into the course already immersed in the world of wine?

It has certainly been a really enjoyable experience taking my sommelier diploma though the Canadian Association of Pro-fessional Sommeliers (CAPS) at George Brown. I have met so many fantastic, talented people in the industry and have learned so much about the world of wine.

While I had a general knowledge of the wine world, methodically going through the global wine producing regions tasting their wines and learning theory is both extremely useful and a whole lot of fun.

Why was it so important for Southbrook to pursue the cer-tified organic and biodynamic certifications for the wine and the brand?

I think it was important for us to pursue our organic and biody-namic certifications for a few reasons. We felt it was important that if we were going to farm our land “sustainably”, we would make the full commitment and become certified by a third party. Simply saying “we farm organ-ically” or “farm using organic

Page 9: PANGEA Private Wealth Group 2016 Q2 Quarterly

practices” was not enough for us; we have, and are very proud of, our official stamp. I think in wider terms, two other reasons that drove our decision was to improve the quality of our wine and increase the health of the land.

Many of the great win-eries of the world farm organically/biodynamically, if they are not certified as well. Wineries such as Chateau de Beaucastel in the Rhone Valley or Felton Road in New Zealand have the same ECOCERT stamp as we do, and that is certainly esteemed company to be in. Going forward, the vastly in-creased soil health that comes with staying away from chemical use will help keep healthy vines growing on the estate for decades to come.

Where do you see your-self in 10 years?

That’s a great question. While I want to stay involved with Southbrook I am going to explore the restaurant world. I am also very interested in the brand ambassador side of the business, specifically with something other than Southbrook; I certainly want to try new roles and locales!

™Victor Godinho on making the list for the third time:

Top 25 advisors in Canada under 40

Why do you think you were selected to be top 25 under 40 for the third time?

I think I was selected be-cause of three key reasons:

1. In the media, I am a go-to source for a millennial per-spective on personal finance topics concerning young professionals. My thoughts have been featured in na-tional media outlets such as The Globe & Mail, Huffington

Post and Toronto Star. My contribution to the profession, highlighting millennial con-cerns and opportununities in personal finance, reaffirms my commitment to ensur-ing my generation is better served with advisors who put the client first.

2. My approach to financial planning is an educational process and client focused. For example, in an estate planning engagement, I

spend a lot of time with my clients educating them about the variety of risk manage-ment solutions that form part of a complex estate plan.

Furthermore, I get to know my clients so well that we es-tablish long-lasting relation-ships. I am regularly invited to client weddings, birthday parties, house warming and even their children’s birth-days. I never feel like I work for clients, rather, I work with friends and help them achieve

success. The care I express for their lives would be the same as if I was working with my own family.

3. I also think my decision to convert my advisor com-pensation model from com-mission-based, which I had at my prior firm, to fee-based which I now have at PANGEA also aligned with the values I talk about. Not many advisors in Canada operate under this model. I recognized early-on in my career that commis-sions create conflict of inter-est. That’s why I operate our business with full transparen-cy. I am fully aware that young professionals and millennials are more informed and have access to a lot of information via the internet and from their

social media networks.

I would say that these three key areas of our business model that continue to qualify me as for this prestigous list.

Who are three people you admire most? Why?

Number one would be my parents. I admire my parents for literally sacrificing every-thing to make sure me and my brothers had everything we needed for a successful life. From emigrating to Cana-da, to working shift-jobs, they did whatever they needed to do to survive.

As I look back on what they have done for my brothers and I, I am amazed at the sac-rifice and work ethic it took to

move to a new country, find work, dedicate time to study, raise three children, and en-roll us in sports to support our hobbies.

If it was not for them I would not be where I am today and I will forever admire my par-ents.

Another person I admire is, Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z. Growing up, Jay-Z was defi-nitely a huge part of my life as I can relate to his music and use his music to get through difficult aspects of life. I admire Jay-Z for what came after the music and his resilience.

At the start of Jay-Z’s career he approached many lables and no one signed him, he did not give up, he decided to put his own money on the line and create his own label Rocafella Records. He was the first artist ever to create their own label and become successful doing that.

He then became a business mogul, by creating a clothing line, buying alcohol brands, opening restaurants and private clubs, owning part of the Brooklyn Nets, and has moved from the street cor-ners of the Brooklyn projects to the penthouse of a Tribeca residence.

Jay-Z has more billboard #1 albums than Elvis and is sec-ond to the Beatles. He continues to challenge the industry with his unortho-dox release of music like the Samsung promo, which al-lowed him to presell $20M in record sales before the album

was even launched. Jay-Z’s creativity and ambition are admirable.

Elon Musk is a third person I admire. Elon Musk moved from Canada after school to Silicon Valley, where he and his brother lived in a 1-room apartment and showered at a local YMCA gym.

He built and sold his first company from nothing, and continues to follow his dreams and standing firm behind them by putting up all of his own money to achieve success.

His innovation, creativity, willingness to build a better future and ability to challenge the norm by going up against big motor companies with Tesla and succeeding is phe-nomenal.

Describe one life experience that you haven’t had yet but are aching to try/do.

One life experience that I wish to complete in my lifetime is to take a sabbati-cal and travel the world. Not because I need to get away from anything but I want to focus my travels specifical-ly to pursue knowledge of ancient cultures. As I con-tinue my personal journey of growth, I am realizing the amount of knowledge and wisdom that can be learned through experiencing differ-

ent cultures. You’ve been featured in magazines and national media, where can we ex-pect to see you in the media 5 years from now?

In 5 years from now I wish to continue contributing to the magazines and media outlets that I am currently featured in, however I would like to be a guest columnist where I am able to craft the full piece instead of only being quoted on the topics.

I also wish to be called upon as an expert panelist for dis-cussions on topics pertaining to the Canadian wealth man-agement space on BNN and other television broadcasts.

I definitely would like to be named to the North American Forbes 30 under 30 list.

How are you redefining the financial planning profes-sion in Canada?

I feel as though I am redefin-ing the financial planning pro-fession in Canada by building on a foundation of education

and transparency.

I believe our approach with clients guides them to make better financial decisions and also helps them to learn about personal finance.

We are able to educate them about finances and this adds value to particpation in the client + advisor relation-ship. In our business, we are seeing the effects of CRM2 to disclose commissions and trailer fees.

Some advisors are behaving badly and moving client mon-ey into products and busi-nesses that shield them from CRM2 disclosure.

At PANGEA Personal Finan-cial Planning we are aready very transparent with all the fees we earn from working with our clients and that transparency will help move this profession forward and elevate our profession in the eyes of the public.

My vision as I continue to grow is to eventually mentor other advisors who share the same values.

As an avid traveller, from where in the world have you drawn most inspiration?

I have been very fortunate in my life in that I have been able to, and encouraged to, travel to Europe many times. I’ve criss-crossed most of Eu-rope and I always seem to be drawn to places where it’s ap-parent that human history has dwelled and lived for many years. The tourism industry often obscures this feeling, trying to make everything seem shiny and new, however when I find a painted chapel ceiling that has sheltered parishioners for hundreds of years or a modern shop built inside the exquisite remains of an ancient building I marvel at the enduring power art and human culture and it’s this quality that really fuels my passion for the arts.

What would you say has been your biggest challenge as an emerging global artists?

A millennial artist struggles with the same problems that artists have for years, only

Canadian artist at Central Saint Martins, UKRising star Marco Bertuzzo talks about how Europe inspires him

magnified. For example one of the hardest things to do as an artist is to gain meaningful exposure and stand out in a very crowded and often very closed art world. Although we all have social media as a platform to promote ourselves it’s easy to get crowded out by the thousand other artists and amateurs. The only tip I really have is to do whatever you do to the best of your abilities and cut no corners.

It’s always good to promote yourself but don’t become just another show boater. People have a sense for hard work and are always drawn to it.

Tell us about your time at Parsons Paris?

While at Parsons Paris I think the best experience I had was to just be dropped into the middle of another culture and having to adapt and make art to suit an entirely different audience.

To really intimately see that people live, and make art in, and culture completely differ-ent from yours is really eye opening. It makes me really scrutinize the way I lived and, I feel, let me merge the best of both worlds and turned me into a much better art-ist. It was also awesome to work alongside the incredible teaching staff there, including Wade Saunders.

What about painting attracted your interest?

Actually, painting has been a recent and rather unexpected development for me. I resist-ed painting for a long time. I found that the visual lan-guage of painting was almost overburdened by the weight of art history.

Furthermore as somebody who drew as a primary prac-tice I was resentful of the higher status that painting was given. I started using watercolours to add touch-es of colour to my drawings and slowly it began to be my

main focus. I found in them a connection to a rich his-tory of work on paper that I began to feel so strongly for, and wanted to promote. With my watercolours I’m trying to validate it and other works on paper as equal art forms to classic painting.

Why did you select Central St. Martins in the UK for your Masters?

I selected Central St. Martins for a few reasons. The first it has really amazing alumni and a history as a fantastic institution. I’d love to become a part of that history and add my own talents to the narra-tive. Secondly It’s location in

London gives me access to a lot of very helpful resources like the various museums and collections in London. With that I can much more easily create works based off of world history, and not only what I have access to in Canada. Finally, and in some ways most importantly, there is a cultural soft spot for wa-tercolors in England, and that means that there is not only a better market for my work, but also greater acceptance and better instructors. It’s this appreciation and skill that I hope to cultivate and bring back to Canada.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

A big part of my career plan is academic, and I would ideally like to see myself as the head of an art department at a university of some impor-tance. Not only do I love the act of instructing but I also feel that from such a position I can shift perspectives in the art world at large. As I climb the academic ladder I will no doubt be continuing to work on my personal practice, and with a lot of work from both myself and the awesome team at Coldstream Fine Arts Gallery, I can definitely see myself exhibiting at the bigger art fairs, or even the biennale. It’s an ambitious goal but you have to have big ambitions to have big successes.

™Anita Verma, Toronto’s Real Estate Lawyer

on Wheels talks travel

I am a free spirit. Those who are closest to me know that I am constantly learning and drawing inspiration from peo-ple, places and things. I am now at a point in my life and career where I can see more of the world - and just wander. I’ve learned a number of im-portant life lessons through my travels. Here are a few things that I think are worth sharing:

1. Solo-travel is a must!

If only just once - do it. I did this last fall and it was one of the most memorable experi-ences of my life. In the words of Michael Jackson, “You are not alone.” I ended a long term relationship and really needed to rediscover myself and regain a sense of independence.

I learned quite a bit about myself and although I was solo, I met some incredible people along the way that welcomed me into their world and even-tually became a personal tourguide of the new places I visited.

Seeing a new city or country with a local is far more inter-esting than doing it on a tour bus, IMO.

2. You can live without your possessions

On my solo trip, my backpack decided it needed a break from me on a connecting flight somewhere between Budapest to Rome to Dubrovnik. With 8 days left on my trip, I had to learn to live without much. Attitude is everything here. Some may crumble, some may thrive. I made the most of my situation and didn’t let it affect my trip. I learned first-hand the meaning of the word resourcefulness. The personal confidence I gained from this experience is immeasurable. As for my backpack, it missed me and decided to reunite with me in Toronto. I gave it a great big hug (kind of like when you haven’t seen someone that you love in a long time - I held it tight and swayed with it for a while).

3. Human connection makes for memorablestories.

Keep an open-mind about meeting new people and trust-ing in others is an acquired ability. My parents were pretty protective of me as a child and they still are today. As an adult now, I no longer follow the rule of “stranger danger.” Yes, it can backfire but the only way you’ll ever know is to try and some-times its worth it.

Through my travels I’ve met dozens of people from differ-ent cultures, ethnicities and across socio-economic strata. I’ve come to appreciate the short time with people while travelling to different places. I’ve grown to treasure these fleeting moments. I’ve also grown as a person and that’s ultimately what satisfies me.

4. Serendipity is magical.

You know how you hear people refer to luck, fate, destiny when describing how a particular sit-uation came about? From my travels, I’ve come to truly be-lieve that circumstances collide in a way to create what was meant to be. Take it for what it is and live in the moment!

1. Of all the creative art forms you could choose to express yourself, why did you choose food?

I didn’t choose food… food chose me! My love for food developed when I was a child. It spoke to me when I was most vulnerable and I cannot see myself not expressing my gratitude for food. Whether it’s a casual bite or something more thought-provoked, I can find reason to be grateful in each bite. The natural colours of food is a blessing, we’ve distorted the idea of con-sumption and have created grand notions to live at large. Now is the time to reduce our

2. Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I love seeing people indulge in my food and impress them with my style of plating. Time feels like it slows down and I can see their nods of approval. Until then I would feel the spotlight of being charged and it is my orchestra. I love what I do and why not share

that amongst others? Being a female in the industry is difficult and I want to show the younger generation how empowerment begins with an idea of what you want to do.

3. Define hyper-modern cuisine.

The term hyper-modern cuisine comes from the noun “hype”. I emerge myself in the term hype because it’s an ev-er-changing time and we are no longer living in the past. We are consistently bettering ourselves and sometimes our methods are forgotten be-

cause we end up praising the next big thing. Because this is my thing, I forage an expe-rience that is based off my experience. My technique and idea of hyper-modern cuisine can be completely different. If there is any way to describe it, hyper activates an interest and modern sets the tone of when the idea will come into play. It’s termed to help find comfort in finding your signature.

What’s your grand vision of life?

While branding Preserve, I am also branding myself to be a resource. I’ve always been very good at supporting, recommending and leading

jobs but my heart has always been with art. Even though I have the right charisma to bring in a team to defy con-vention, I have difficulty with expressing myself through communication. I find that I have a shy personality and I speak out loud with art. These pop-up events gives me the chance to showcase my work and other new generation Chefs into an experimental and determined focus. I am able to stage and learn from others in all fields and be well-rounded rather than to working my way up. I want to train Chefs and artists for life not for profit and gain. I don’t want Chefs to be hiding in the back of the house and fall into depression of long work hours and barked orders. I

want to hold an allure for other makers and start-ups so they can also find a happi-ness and peace in developing others.

What’s the most disap-pointing thing that’s hap-pened to your career to date? What did you learn from it?

Seeing how my choices affected my parents the most because they were always inconsistent about what they really want for me. In hind-sight, all they ever want is a balance between family and stability but I always brought back friends who I consider family and insane methods that didn’t have an instruction

to it. Our methods never matched, they were very traditional and I always had a modern and optimis-tic way to do things. It is the most difficult and disappointing thing to hear you’re wrong when especially you’re already stressed about how to start it all. There is no right or wrong to creating but what would be wrong is not pushing yourself to do what you love. I felt that I had something to prove and I’ve worked really hard to get that approval. But at the end of the day, I proved to myself and not my parents that I can and I am fero-cious and find beauty in what I do.

What’s the most remarkable thing that you’ve experienced in your career to date? What did you learn from it?

Despite the ups and downs, I am always able to muster through the bad and in with the good. Believe it or not, I’ve gone through very dra-matic and traumatizing personal and career-related situations that I would never wish upon anyone but I stand tall (even though I’m super short!). Being in such negative moments, I saw every imperfection and ques-tioned everything till I learned that being at the bottom isn’t a bad thing. It is a challenge to wake up and feel the moment but I push and strive for what I can change and let go of the things I cannot change. Having this strength to adapt to situations helps my emotions, which is fitting to my busy career because it keeps me positive and motivated.

What would be your last meal?

I’m not going to hold back because I believe in living a prosperous life when you’ve earned it. My last meal would be fried pigeon, shark fin soup, sushi, cabbage rolls, elk steak with veal demi glaze, cajun shrimp, oysters, shanghai noodles and ice cream. I ain’t no salad girl.

What women offer as finanical advisors - March, 2016Heidi Kurien, President & Broker of RecordPANGEA Private Realty Services, BROKERAGE

Over the past quarter, members of the PANGEA leadership team have been featured in several media articles and interviews on various topics. The full articles can be found on-line. Below are select quotes from the articles.

“Women advisors also understand that female investors have broader life goals that may be equally important to their financial goals i.e. career goals, relationship goals or family goals… financial decisions are just part of the whole picture.”

“With private mortgages, the investor will have more control and transparency. Investor comfort also increases because of the tangible security of real property.”

“Some of our most beloved clients are the ones who were referred to us through our personal network. We love working with these clients because we already share similar values and also have a number of other lifestyle things in common e.g. sports, food, travel. Working with a client that ‘gets you’ is energizing and the relationship feels like a partnership.”

“Quality is remem-bered long after price is forgotten” - Sir Henry Royce.

This has always been one of our favorite quotes and the principle mantra of The Lon-don Bespoke Club. Not just reserved for your local hab-erdashery, it can be applied across the entire spectrum of services and products offered out in the real world. After all, you wouldn’t expect to wander into your local Honda dealership and receive the same level of experience and service as you would at the

Maserati dealership. Con-versely, you wouldn’t expect to walk away with the perfor-mance and luxury of a Rolls-Royce Phantom for the price of a Honda Civic. Sure these might be exaggerated exam-ples, but the core principle holds true. The goal of this article is not to preach that spending the most gets you the best item, fore this is not always the case. Rather it’s purpose is to demonstrate that if you look hard enough there are hidden gems everywhere. That is how I feel about The London Bespoke Club; the result of

the blood, sweat, tears and countless hours toiled by my business partner, Steven Gre-wal and myself, Kunal Arora.

Quality is preached by many brands in the tailoring world today. It used to stand for one principle concept, however in today’s landscape we are pre-sented with a variety of “qual-ity levels”, at any given price points. One of my personal fa-vourites has always been Tom Ford line of suiting, known primarily for his evening wear; classy yet edgy. More import-ant than both of these traits, is his standard of quality and

above that is consistency. After seeing the insides; the guts if you will, of some of his gar-ments, what becomes ever pres-ent is consistent construction methodology. The growth of his business since having left the LVMH group is something we’ve tracked, admired and strived to emulate in our own business.

Steven and I started The Lon-don Bespoke Club because of an unbridled passion for fash-ion. With a combined 8 years of clothing retail and tailoring experience under our belts we’ve learned, through a host of failures and an ever growing list of triumphs, the joys of providing our clients with immaculately well fitted garments. It is the

look of astonishment you get from a client who tries on a lightweight yet fully canvassed garment that drives us to con-tinue doing what we do. Above all else, constantly striving for unique and improved fabrics and ever better construction tech-niques.

It’s in the understated details of some garments, where you can find the finest workings. True milanese style boutonnieres and handmade buttonholes, versus machine finished holes, are the beginning of this artisanship. One method takes 15 minutes per buttonhole, painstakingly hand sewing around a gimp of silk, whilst the latter is com-pleted in mere seconds costing

considerably less yet lacking the flexible durability of the aforementioned method. Hand picked stitching on each and every seam of garments is yet another often overlooked detail.

For some this touch is purely for aesthetics and only ap-plied on the front most visible seams. Other tailors, including ourselves, feel it is import-ant for each of our clients to appreciate that someone has toiled laboriously on each and every seam of their garment, thus it is applied to all possible locations.

What made you decide to start CutiePie Cupcake & Co.?

Since I was a kid, I had always loved baking and attempting to create my own recipes. When I started the company in 2009, it was before the cupcake boom hit Toronto.

There were literally no cup-cake shops or anything of the sort downtown and the only cupcakes available anywhere were not the best quality and were quite generic. I saw the potential for a cupcake market and wanted to pro-vide Toronto with something different and unique. I came up with the idea of CutiePie Cupcakes.

In the beginning, as the name implies, we specialized in mini cupcakes inspired by the tastes of favourite pies, treats and other desserts. From this we continued to expand our menu, adding Chubby-

Pies (just like the minis only more to love) and now new this year we are again we are proud to say that we are again home to Toronto’s first specialty WhoopiePies (But-tercream and toppings sand-wiched between two pieces of cake).

What was the most difficult challenge you overcame in your early years ?

Creating your own path and taking risks can be very daunting at times and in ways that people may not assume. We are pretty much told by society that if our lives are to be fulfilling we must follow a certain path and timeline or ‘normal route’ of the secure 9-5 job, a pre-drawn career path or settling down for mar-riage or kids.

When you skew away from this and make the choice to pave your own path and create something new by following your own instincts, passion and dreams, you kind of have to abandon all the comforts associated with the ‘normal route’.

As anyone one their own path will tell you, this choice does come with tremendous learn-ing curves, many mistakes, personal sacrifice and even backlash from those people who wish that you fit into the ‘regular mould’.

What I have learned, espe-cially as CutiePie has grown very organically over the last 6 years, firstly, is that anything is possible but things may not go in the way you had imag-ined or in the timeline you might have expected, so hang in there!

Also, most people will not un-derstand your choices or your path (the reason that you are living your dreams while oth-ers only dream of theirs). For this reason, it is so important to stay true to yourself, to your vision, to work at the best of your capabilities and maintain a level of flexibility and to think outside the box.

You must always continue to do what makes YOU hap-py , to continually feed your passions, to take care of yourself and most important-ly, to surround yourself with

like-minded, inspiration and supportive individuals, family and friends!

Which is your best cupcake in your opinion? And why?

Everyone seems to have a different favourite cupcake. Mine tends to be whichever I am eating at the time . I would have to say that our three most unique flavours are our Crazy for Brulee (crème brulee inspired, Pink Velour (inspired by Red Vel-vet) and our Birthday Cake Brulee (combines the flavours of traditional birthday cake with our bestselling Crazy for Brulee flavour - it was released to celebrate our 5 years in business).

Where does your creative inspiration come from?

I like to be in the know of what people’s favourite des-

serts are. The flavour of the month usually is inspired by a particular dessert or theme that is a favourite at that time. For example, for the month of June we have a rainbow cupcake/whoopiepie/cake to celebrate Toronto Pride week!

Where do you see yourself and CutiePie Cupcake & Co. in 10 years?

This June we are thrilled to fi-nally open our first retail store and espresso coffee bar, just North of Queen & Spadina (235 Spadina Ave).

Up until now, we have op-erated by appointment only and we are excited to now be accessible to the general public. We started as Toron-to’s first specialty mini cup-cake company and this year we are also proud to be home of Toronto’s first specialty WhoopiePies as well.

Our goal is to continue on our path and expansion. We will forever be committed to providing top quality prod-ucts and services to our loyal customers, proving treats for all the best parties and to continue spreading happiness across this beautiful city! We are very excited to see what the future holds!! ☺
