On the the 27th of June, African Student Abroad (ASA) organises The Pan African Youth pre-summit 2014 with as theme: The presence of China in Africa, a curse or a blessing? With this event, ASA wants to offer African students, young professionals and other interested people a unique opportunity to get involved in the current discussion about the relationship between China and Africa.

Background

Africa is taking off and many young Africans living outside the continent are excited to

contribute to the continent and some of them are even planning their return to the

motherland. The African Union for instance, acknowledges the diaspora as its sixth region

partner, which is defined as:

We, African Students Abroad, want to offer the African youth all across Europa a unique

opportunity to share their views on current topics concerning Africa and strengthening of

the bond between them, Ubuntu. That is why we initiatied The Pan African Youth Summit.

The Pan-African Youth Summit

The Pan African Youth Pre-Summit has the aim to connect 100 African students and

young professionals from all over Europe in a three-day conference in Amsterdam to

discuss the current developments on Africa and to create together the Pan African

Agenda of the 21st century. Contemporary challenges that are facing the African

continent like land grabbing, the position of Africa on the Global market and the

relationship between the African Union the International justice will be discussed from

different perspectives. But before that takes place, African Student Abroad organises a

Pre-Summit.

this event ASA wants to offer African students, young professionals and other interested

people a unique opportunity to get involved in thecurrent discussion about the relationship

between China and Africa.

- Sanne van der Lugt

Sanne van der Lugt is researcher associated to the Africa Studies center of Leiden University and specialized in the African China relationship. Specialist in the political economy of China-Africa relations, Chinese outward FDI and Chinese business culture, with a current focus on the motives of Chinese investors for investing in Northern Africa.Experienced in running a business in China, leading research projects and disseminating research findings at international conferences. She will introduce us in the subject: What is China doing in Africa exactly and how is this relationship being shaped?

Who are winners and losers of this relationship? Which chances and challenges face this Africa - China relationship? And finally, Is the Chinese presence in Africa a curse or a blessing?

Alphonse Muambi

Alphonse Muambi (Speaker TEdx Ghent 2014) is Dutch lobbyist with Congolese roots, Author of publicist and a political analyst specialized in globalisation and Africa. He is author of 'Democratie kun je niet eten/You can't eat democracy'

He will introduce us into the Pan-African ideology and the extent to which it is relevant nowadays. Can the Pan-African ideology be implemented to

the contemporary challenges in the global and African dimension?
