What is Patient Activation and what is the PAM®?

• The PAM® is a questionnaire designed to measure the knowledge, skills and confidence (ACTIVATION) that a person has to manage their own health and healthcare.

• The PAM results in a percentage score and a level of activation from 1 (low) to 4 (high).

• PAM® levels help tailor a general approach to a group or individual. • The percentage score identifies changes within levels.

Why is it important to change what we are doing? Why is it important to change what we are doing for… Our patients and clients? Ourselves? Our organisations? Why is Activation important? Roots of the tree = Activation Fruits of the tree = Outcomes If we want good outcomes, then we need to pay attention to activation. NOTES

Why use the PAM®? The PAM® has been well researched and provides a robust, evidence-based measure of a person’s knowledge, confidence and skills to manage their health and healthcare. You will have received information on its development and on the relationship between activation and health care use, hospital admissions, adherence to and knowledge of medications and more importantly, Quality of Life (QoL). The PAM® is a simple to use and reliable tool when used and applied correctly. What evidence concerning the PAM® most interests you? Why do we measure anything in healthcare? (What could measuring Activation allow us to do?) 1. 2. 3. 4. . .

How do we measure the PAM® well? What factors might bias the results? What could be your words to introduce the PAM® to a patient/carer/service user? What else is important to remember when going through the PAM® questionnaire with people?

• Read the statements and the answers in the order that they appear. • Do not interpret the statements for the individual (consider PAM® primer

if needed). • If the individual cannot or will not respond to a statement, or if a

statement does not apply (which is rare), select N/A. • Redirect the individual if he/she goes off course (e.g. talking about their

symptoms, recent difficulties). • Do not start coaching during the survey. • Allow the individual adequate time to respond (even when silence is

difficult and you want to jump in and help).

What if all the responses are the same? Variation is expected so..

• Stop the survey • Check understanding (consider re-introduction) • Re-administer the survey • If all responses are still the same, then proceed as if level 2

How do you score the PAM®? Who in your organisation will score the PAM®? This is a quick, simple and absolutely essential administrative task which will allow health and social care colleagues to make use of the results to inform the care they provide. It is useful if the results are coded and easily located in the patient/client record. What additional training/information/support might they need? NOTES

So, what do the PAM® results tell us? How activated are you in …………….? (E.g. cycling, cooking…) Knowing where you are now, what would you need in order to do more…? NOTES
