St Peter’s College celebrates being a Catholic Faith Community, where students, teachers and families work in partnership to develop empowered, self-managing, life-long learners, who live the Gospel values in a changing world.

David OlivierPrincipal

Congratulations to the Senior Liturgy Team and Mr Rick Field for another great final Senior Mass at the Cathedral on 3 November. It was well attended by parents and family and we gave the Year 13’s an appropriate and emotional farewell. The resounding Haka at the end of the mass showed huge respect towards an excellent Year 13 Leadership year. Their final graduation Mass and dinner will take place on 3rd December and then their final function will be the college Prizegiving on the evening of 6th December.

Our Teacher in Charge of the ESOL department, Mrs McFarlane, has decided to retire and will finish up at the end of the year. We will thank her appropriately at the Prizegiving, but wish her all the best for what lies ahead for her and the family in the years to come.

It gives me great pleasure to inform our College community of the appointment of Mrs Sarah Hearn to the position of Deputy Principal next year, Mrs Hearn will be taking on the portfolios of Pastoral Care, Connect to Succeed and PB4L with the ROCK program. Deputy Principal, Mrs Leamy has been appointed to the Head of Junior School portfolio which Mrs Adams will be leaving at the end of the year. We wish them both all the best in their respective new roles.

Mr James Rose will be in the Acting Principal position at the beginning of 2018 until the arrival of the new principal, Mr Kevin Shore, on 5 March 2018. I wish James and Kevin all the best in their roles in 2018.

Senior exams are currently underway and so far there have been no surprises and the students seem to be coping very well. There are several weeks still to go so please do keep supporting and encouraging them during this time.

Junior Debating - last year St Peter’s won the Regional Junior Debating competition. This year’s team are following in their footsteps with their recent win over Cullinane they are now in the semi-finals.

The team, comprising Klem McJarrow-Keller, Josh Donaldson and Elizabeth Laven, have already beaten teams from Palmerston North Boy’s High and Nga Tawa. We will host the semi-finals and finals in the last week of November.

Parihaka - recently Tracy Wheeler visited to teach the Year 7 & 8 students the story of Parihaka. Each class had 45 minutes with her and completed the session by making flags with the symbol of peaceful non-violent resistance - the white feather.

The Annual Super Sport Touch Tournament was recently held at Monrad Park. Both teams played to the best of their ability, with some close games and some not so close games. The girls team finished on a high winning their final placing game against Levin Intermediate 3-2 in a nail-biter.

Congratulations to Tournament MVP’s Kimberley Walsh (Girls) and Tyler Hodson (Boys) on your outstanding play throughout the tournament.

Thank you to the regular season players and the extra players who came along to help the teams out.

Operation Christmas Child Congratulations to our Yr 7-10 students who raised over $350 at a mufti day and produced 20 boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The initiative was driven through the Junior Council, and headed by Anneliese Leamy-King (Yr 9) and Jessica Chin-Shong (Yr 8).

Yuki Yam did her first 10km run in early November after training very hard for months. Her great dedication paid off and she finished just under one hour. Well done Yuki!!!

House an International Student in 2018Next year we have a great number of International students

attending St Peter’s. Mostly from Japan and Asia, their length of stay can be 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 1 year or a few years as they finish their schooling.

We are always looking for families to host a student in their home. There is a financial incentive. Contact Debbie Wallace, Homestay Coordinator, 021 745 593.

Manawatu Special Olympics - recently five students competed in the Manawatu Special Olympics Swimming Competition hosted by Waiopehu College at the Levin Aquatic Centre.

The following students gained placings in their competitions:Harry Newcombe 1st 15 mtr Pool WalkScott Claridge 3rd 15 mtr Pool WalkDylan Robertson 2nd 15 mtr Unassisted Swim 1st 15 mtr Kickboard SwimElla Clifford 1st 50 mtr Freestyle 2nd 25 mtr Breaststroke 2nd 50 mtr Backstroke

Well done to all our students who participated.

The Seniors last day before study leave was filled with high jinx and shenanigans as the students ‘decorated’ parts of the school, played practical jokes, dressed up & had some fun!

Senior Mass - was, as always, an emotional celebration farewelling our Senior Students and wishing them well for the next steps in their journey.

Student Rep on BOT - student voting elected Eliana Crooks to be the Student Representative on the St Peter’s College Board of Trustees for 2018. Congratulations!

The Yr 7&8 Athletic Sports were held this week. It was a brilliantly sunny day with fantastic house spirit and a great mix of athleticism and ‘give it a go’ positive attitude from all students. The overall champions for each are:

Year 7 Girls - Paityn Fraser (Viard) and Alesha Alexander (Redwood)

Year 7 Boys - Sione Latu (O’Shea) Year 8 Boys - Jordan Donnelly (Redwood), and Year 8 Girls - Kimberley Walsh (Redwood). Kimberley broke 4 School Records and Sione broke the

Shot Put Record. A big thank you to the wonderful Year 10 PE Studies class

who were fabulous leaders. House points will follow.

message From BishoP charles #makeUsProUD ...

I want to encourage you all to step up and get to Mass. Pressures tugging us away are strong. But Sunday Mass far from reducing our freedom enhances it, as it shapes the persons and families and communities we are called to be.

Jesus wants to help build your family. So does your parish. The special children’s liturgy part of Mass means you needn’t worry about keeping little ones occupied. And as teenagers and adults why not take just one hour a week to chill out spiritually, to be nurtured with God’s Word and to receive Jesus himself in holy communion. The cafes will still be open, the sports fields never go away, friends and cussies won’t shift.

Check out Mass times at https://pndiocese.org.nz/pasto-ral/masstimes/. For some of you it may be the first time you have been to Church for a long time. Welcome. For others give yourself a challenge to change your question from “shall we go to Mass today?” to “which Mass shall we go to today?”

Thanks to you all for your sense of belonging, no matter what stage that is at. Feel encouraged. The priests and I are here simply to serve you, and we love doing that.

Bishop Charles

My heart is lifted every Sunday by the presence at Mass of young families, elderly, teenagers, and young adults. I know that many have made great efforts to be present.

I also know that some of us feel we do not belong or worry that we may not fit in. God’s whānau, the Church, is everyone’s home. There is room for everyone at Mass. No one need feel alone or different.

Krista and Klem McJarrow-Keller recently passed their Speech and Drama exams.

After studying Speech and Drama for almost half her life, Krista’s time and commitment paid off when she passed her Advanced Associate Diploma in Speech and Drama (Teaching).

Klem passed his Grade 7 examinations in Speech and Drama. Well done McJarrow-Keller’s!

Boston Schoon-Walter was recently selected in the Under 12 Supercity Wellington Baseball team to go to the Gold Coast for a tournament at the beginning of 2018. They are busy fundraising for the trip.
