We Shall Remember Them
Today, April 9, 2017, is the 100th anniversary of the Battle at Vimy Ridge. It was a significant battle for Canadian forces, which fought as a distinct unit for the first time; many believe this to be the signal event for Canada’s development as a nation on the world stage.
But Vimy, like other battles of the First World War, was gruesome; Canada paid a terrible price in human lives and suffering for its victory. This is why sacrifice and sorrow — not triumph — is the theme of the Canadian War Memorial at Vimy. The detail pictured above shows “Mother Canada” mourning her lost children.
This unique monument was the work of Walter Allward; its execution took 16 years and nearly ruined his health. Allward spent his last decade or so in our neighbourhood and was a member of St. John’s York Mills Church. He died in 1955 and is interred in our churchyard.
