Palm Sunday
The liturgy of the palms
We w
ill gather in front of the church for the Blessing of the Palms.
Celebrant Blessed is the King who com
es in the name of the Lord.
People Peace in heaven and glory in the highest. Celebrant Let us pray. Assist us m
ercifully with your help, O Lord God of our salvation, that w
e may enter w
ith joy upon the contem
plation of those mighty acts, w
hereby you have given us life and imm
ortality; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Am
en. M
ark 11:1-11 W
hen they were approaching Jerusalem
, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives,
Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them
, "Go into the village ahead of you, and im
mediately as you enter it, you w
ill find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, `W
hy are you doing this?' just say this, `The Lord needs it and w
ill send it back here imm
ediately.'" They went aw
ay and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they w
ere untying it, some of the bystanders said to them
, "What are
you doing, untying the colt?" They told them w
hat Jesus had said; and they allowed them
to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw
their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many
people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those w
ho went ahead and those w
ho followed w
ere shouting, "H
osanna! Blessed is the one w
ho comes in the nam
e of the Lord! Blessed is the com
ing kingdom of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!"
Then he entered Jerusalem and w
ent into the temple; and w
hen he had looked around at everything, as it w
as already late, he went out to Bethany w
ith the twelve.
The Celebrant then says the following blessing:
The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him
thanks and praise. It is right to praise you, Alm
ighty God, for the acts of love by which you have redeem
ed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem
in trium
ph, and was proclaim
ed as King of kings by those who spread their garm
ents and branches of palm
along his way. Let those branches be for us signs of his victory, and grant
that we w
ho bear them in his nam
e may ever hail him
as our King, and follow him
in the way
that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory w
ith you and the Holy Spirit, now
and for ever. Am

There are small green collection boxes in the N

asking each diocesan household to give $50 in support of the campaign.
This dollar amount sym
bolizes the average farmw
orkers’ labor to harvest two tons of
sweet potatoes. The goal for The Diocese of East Carolina is $100,000.
Place your contribution in the box or bring it to the church office. Thank you for your generosity. You can find m

We take advantage of our access to clean drinking w
ater. Most of us go
to the faucet and get a glass of clean fresh water several tim
es a day and never give the first thought to the im
portance of water. W
e have become
so accustomed to having it, w
e rarely think about what our lives w
ould be like, if w
e had to struggle to find water that w
as even halfway safe to
drink. Sadly, in many other countries across the globe, this a problem
that is all too real. They are forced to drink w
ater from rivers, stream
s, w
atering holes, and other water sources that are m
ore than likely diseased or polluted. They are forced, often tim
es, to bathe and cook with this sam
e dirty water.
At the recent convention of the Diocese of East Carolina the M
illennium D
evelopment
Goals Comm
ittee gave a 5 gallon bucket to each congregation encouraging them through
the season of Lent to ask people to place their coins or bills into the bucket. At the end of Lent all m
onies will be returned to the diocese and sent to Episcopal Relief and
Developm
ent for their clean water initiatives. Please be generous in your response.
Our bucket is located on a table to your right as you exit the church.
Don’t forget to feed your H
ope Chest for Episcopal Relief and Developm
ent. W
e will collect the boxes next Sunday.

The First Lesson Isaiah 50:4-9a The Lord GOD has given m
e the tongue of a teacher, that I may know
how to sustain the w
eary w
ith a word. M
orning by morning he w
akens--wakens m
y ear to listen as those who are taught.
The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I w
as not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave m
y back to those w
ho struck me, and m
y cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide
my face from
insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced;
therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know
that I shall not be put to shame; he w
ho vindicates m
e is near. Who w
ill contend with m
e? Let us stand up together. Who are m
y adversaries? Let them
confront me. It is the Lord GOD w
ho helps me; w
ho will declare m
e guilty?

Psalm 31:9-16
Prayer Book, Page 623
9 Have m
ercy on me, O LORD, for I am
in trouble; * m
y eye is consumed w
ith sorrow,
and also my throat and m
y belly. 10 For m
y life is wasted w
ith grief, and m
y years with sighing; *
my strength fails m
e because of affliction, and m
y bones are consumed.
11 I have become a reproach to all m
y enemies and even to m
y neighbors, a dism
ay to those of my acquaintance; *
when they see m
e in the street they avoid me.
12 I am forgotten like a dead m
an, out of mind; *
I am as useless as a broken pot.
13 For I have heard the whispering of the crow
d; fear is all around; * they put their heads together against m
e; they plot to take m
y life.
14 But as for me, I have trusted in you, O LORD. *
I have said, "You are my God.
15 My tim
es are in your hand; * rescue m
e from the hand of m
y enemies,
and from those w
ho persecute me.
16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, *
and in your loving-kindness save me."
The Epistle
Philippians 2:5-11
Let the same m
ind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, w
ho, though he was in the form
of God, did not regard equality w
ith God as something to be exploited, but em
ptied himself, taking the form
of a slave, being born in hum
an likeness. And being found in human form
, he humbled him
self and becam
e obedient to the point of death--even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him
and gave him the nam
e that is above every name, so that at the nam
e of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The Gospel (8am
service only-when invited please stand as you are able.)
