Faster automation through standardisation

Faster automation throughstandardisation

Portal robots automate orien-tation, moving and stacking ofpackages on pallets. This relievesstaff members of monotonousactivities that are often physicallydemanding – especially in theproduction of consumer goodssuch as food and luxury items orpharmaceutical products. Due to anextremely high level of stan-dardisation, Parker is able todeliver economical pallet handlingrobots within a very short timeperiod.

Manufacturing enterprises need tobecome ever more flexible to beable to adjust to rapidly changingorder situations. This makes itnecessary to acquire automationequipment and place it in operationwithin a few weeks or months.Previously this could only be donewith great difficulty, if at all.Planning, configuring and settingup pallet handling robots wasexpensive and time-consuming andrequired a great deal of work. Basedon the user’s specifications, a greatnumber of calculations had to becarried out at the manufacturer’ssite. For example, these includeddimensioning linear modules tomatch the loads to be transportedas well as selecting the necessarytransmission elements to achievethe required speeds and accel-erations. Because of repeatedadjustments to suit the client’sneeds plus optimisations whereneeded, project planning and con-figuration often lasted severalmonths. The result of this wasunnecessarily high and unec-onomical costs for the client andmanufacturer. This also stood in theway of flexible, short-term adjust-ment to a specific type of pro-duction.

Minimising cost and time duringacquisition

Now significant improvements areavailable with standardised pallethandling robots from Parker. Theyare specially designed for movingand stacking crates, both cardboardand plastic. They are equipped withthree linear actuators (X, Y and Zaxis) and an optional additionalrotation axis (C axis).Linear actuators with timing belt drivehave been used successfully foryears and their long service lifeensures reliability. A telescopic Z axisminimises the vertical space requiredfor the pallet handling robot. The optional C axis makes it possibleto rotate about the vertical axis, thusallowing for reorientation of individualpackages and boxes. This offersnumerous advantages. For example, the surface of standard pallets canthus be optimally used with cartonsor boxes of different dimensions orloaded in combination.

All drive elements of the pallethandling robots are suitable foroperation in clean environments. This is particularly useful inManufacturing enterprises in thepharmaceutical, food and luxuryitem industries. The grippermakes it possible to move loadsweighing up to 50 kg. Digitalservo drives with COMPAXservo control systems in all axesensure high dynamic perform-ance and precise positioning.

Essentially two different types ofgripper are available:

● Suction grippers for cardboardboxes dimensioned:

300 x 200 mm up to 10 kg400 x 300 mm up to 25 kg600 x 400 mm up to 50 kg

● Internal / external grippers, forexample for C, R and RL-KLTboxes according to VDA4500 indimensions of:

400 x 300 mm up to 25 kg600 x 400 mm up to 50 kg

If necessary, grippers can be ad-justed to specific customer needsby our experienced design engi-neers.

Control System / Programming

The heart of the pallet handling robot:Control cabinet with fully digital ser-vo drives

The control systemA standard PC with a Windows operatingsystem serves as the control and pro-gramming computer. The basis for the control system conceptare the fully digital COMPAX servo controlsystems with direct mains operation.Data is transferred synchronously andserially via the HEDA bus (High EfficiencyData Access). The PC controls the program sequenceand communicates with the peripheralinterfaces. Interpolated movementsalong a path make time-optimisedmovements possible.

OperationA user-friendly interface has beendeveloped under Windows. Various func-tions are available for the user in theindividual operating modes:

Manual operation:● Movement of all servo axes.● Status display and entry of all

digital inputs and outputs via anintegrated diagnostics function.

Teach-In operation:● Approaching and accepting

prominent points.● Coordinates are safely stored even

if the power fails.

Automatic operation:● Fully automatic pallet handling

operation.● System status (position of boxes,

parameters and all other actualvalues) is safely stored even if thepower fails.

● Clear text display of fault and errormessages.

● A large number of ready-to-usepallet handling images can berecalled directly.

● Two password levels for protec-tion of program data.

● Flexibly programmable positionimages with graphical display.Ready-to-use program images canbe stored in a library.

● Different layers can be program-med – layers are displayed in color.Pallet handling can alternatebetween position 1 andposition 2 (seeimage on theright).

These turn-key pallet handling robotscan be used in the area of self-medi-cation for placing finished products onpallets and so-called folding cartons.Tablets in the form of bundles orshipping cartons are supplied to thesystems via various conveyor belts. They are stacked one after the otheronto two euro pallets. At the same time, the folding cartons are supplied by theupstream packaging machines inplastic boxes over a separate belt. Thereturning empty folding cartons are setdown on another pallet waiting for thatpurpose. Driverless transport vehiclesare used to supply and remove europallets.

This pallet unloading system is used inthe food industry for removing packagesof butter from pallets. Two pallets in euroor industrial format with several layersof 25 kg cartons of different dimensionsare supplied to the system per liftingvehicle. They are removed in alternationor one after the other and transferred toa rotation and turn-around station.Depending on the position of the carton,it is rotated by 90° and then tilted ontoa conveyor belt. During the pallet un-loading process, intermediate layersand pallets are moved onto slots reserv-ed for them.
