Akhenaton and Amarna Period

Amenhotep IV, later known as Akhenaton, completely switched Egypt’s main god from Amen to Aton, the universal and only god. Switch from polytheism to mono.

Worship and cult of Amen and priesthood arose immediately after his demise.

Amarna Period known for relaxed rules for making art – extreme stylistic change in Egyptian Art!!

Akhenaton, Nefertiti, and three Daughters, Tell el-Amarna, D. XVIII, 1353-1335, limestone.

Sunken relief stele, curving contours vs. earlier rigidity, family sits in rays of Aton, rare family scene. Very sweet.
