This was followed by the dance Group Bindaas Beats who prepared a beautiful medley honouringPakistani singers starting with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and ending with Fakhir’s Tere bina. At the sametime we had Umer Sheikh, Hassan Gillani and Saad Saleem who touched the hearts of many guests.

Making us Proud Initiative:

It was last year we launched this initiative to acknowledge the members of Pakistani community who areexcelling in their fields and the ones who support Pakistani community in Australia and back home.

We had four members who were honored this year and were presented certificates by the HonoraryInvestment Counsellor Mr. Colin Roberts.

Ali Raza Syed

Ali Raza Syed has excelled academically as well as in extra curricular activities and has been presentedDuke of Edinburgh Gold Award by the West Australian Governor Malcolm McCusker. He was the only boyfrom the seven private schools in Perth-school to win the Gold Award. In his own school - Scotch College- he is the only boy after 1966 to have earned this award. Ali Raza Syed is currently studying at theUniversity of Western Australia.

Sarah Imtiaz

The second nominee was awarded for leadership which is itself a difficult task and more difficult when itis a girl who is leading the team of boys and girls. This young lady has shown exceptional qualities besideacademically strong achievement and is again a student at the University of Western Australia. The

organisation that she is leading is UWA Muslim Student Association which is playing a key role in interfaithdialogues and promoting harmony among different cultures and religions.

Nevin Jayawardena

For last two years we are indebted with support from our friends in Australia for a lot of initiatives. Thereare many team members who work behind the scene with us. One such person has worked tremendouslyfor the visual identity of our organisation. Whether it is a flyer for the event or the logo of Pakistanis inAustralia, a beautiful green five cornered star within seven cornered Australian one, it is all created by one

and only Nevin Jayawardena who is also currently leading the DESI group which is a group representingstudents who original have linkages towards the Indo Pak subcontinent.

The Theosophical Order of Service

It was merely a coincidence when we get in touch with this organisation to sharing our experiences ofmigration. It came as a surprise to know that this organisation is running schools in Karachi by the nameof Qandeel which means light to promote education in underserved communities of Pakistan. IN addition, for our Beenai project where we collect reading glasses to be distributed in Pakistan, this organisation is

our major donor so far and only this year we have been able to send 100 pair of reading glasses toPakistan which will be distributed through a student run project in one of the medical colleges in AzadJammu Kashmir. This all has become a reality because of the support of just one organisation. Ms. RhondaPhillips, the President on behalf of the Theosophical Order of Service accepted the certificate.

HIC Colin Roberts congratulated the recipients and spoke about his involvement with the community.Speaking on the occasion, Hon Margaret Quirk also congratulated the Pakistani community on

Independence day and Eid and highlighted the role of the members of the group in collaboration withEthnic Communities Council of WA against the proposed amendments to the Racial Discrimination Act.
