Firebugs beware: Police are on the look-out for arsonists.Zooming in: A helicopter battles fires at Pakenhamlast month. Picture: Wayne Hawkins
Arson watch: recruits wantedBY CHAD VAN ESTROPand CATHERINE WATSON
POLICE have called for the public to be on thewatch for firebugs as concerns grow thatarsonists are increasingly responsible for grassand bushfires across Cardinia and Casey.
Senior Sergeant Trevor Vondrasek ofCardinia police has called on the public to bean ‘‘extra set of eyes for police’’ on days ofextreme fire danger.
He said police were willing to risk falsealarms if it meant more vigilance againstarsonists. ‘‘We’d rather have it reported andthen discard it than not know about it at all,’’he told the Weekly.
The call comes as police investigate a spateof deliberately lit fires. Last Sunday week, there were two suspicious outbreaks.
The first, about 7.45pm, involved three fireslit about 200 metres apart at Sweeney’sReserve, Berwick.
The second, about 8.50pm, involved eightfires lit over a 500-metre stretch of rural prop-erty bound by Thompsons, Pound, Grices and
Soldiers roads in Clyde North. And grass firesthat threatened homes in Pakenham earlier lastmonth included some that were lit at100-metre intervals along Pakenham andReynolds Roads, Pakenham Upper.
CFA operations manager Trevor Owen saidhe had no doubt the number of suspiciously litfires had increased this season, especially overrecent weeks.
‘‘There has been a spike in deliberate activitythis summer. That’s going against the trendover the last few years.’’
Mr Owen also expressed concern that somefires may be being lit by copycats.
But dry grassland is making it hard for localfirefighters to definitively say if some fires weredeliberately lit, he said. ‘‘Because the fuelsources are so dry it only takes a little spark toignite and often not many remnants are leftafter a fire.
‘‘Thankfully, this summer hasn’t had hotnortherly winds. If we had those winds theresults of deliberately lit fires could have beenquite catastrophic.’’
Police are urging people seen near the fires in
Clyde North and Berwick to contact them sothey can be crossed off the list of suspects.
Detective Senior Leading Constable ChrisRusso of the Casey crime investigation unitsaid witnesses had reported several vehicles inthe area at the time.
‘‘We’d urge anyone who was near the fires tocontact police so we can identify whether theyhad a legitimate purpose in being there.’’
Detective Russo said both sets of fires wereon the urban-rural interface, which made thempotentially disastrous. ‘‘There was a high riskto property and even to life.’’
Since the start of the year, Casey andCardinia firefighters have battled a rash ofdeliberately lit fires. Two 11 year olds havebeen charged with arson and a 12 year old cau-tioned over another fire.
Detective Russo said it was unlikely childrenwere responsible for the most recent firesbecause of the large area involved.
He called on residents to be vigilant.Information to Crime Stoppers on

Education cuts deliver a blowLast week, students right across Victoria returnedfrom holidays and back into the school day routine.Of course, with the nerves and excitement of back-to-school week comes the bills as well.
Unfortunately, Ted Baillieu is making life evenmore difficult for Victorian parents, having cut$555 million out of our education system in his firsttwo years in government, through cuts to the Edu-cation Maintenance Allowance, VCAL, the SchoolStart Bonus, Fresh Fruit Friday and the YouthFocused School Service.
Some families are really struggling to deal with
the impact of such enormous and wide-rangingfunding cuts, so we’re running a campaign to passthose views on to Mr Baillieu. To find out moreinformation about the ‘Ted Baillieu is not workingon Education’ campaign, or to sign the statewidepetition, visit BaillieusNotWorking.com.au.

Re: Council donation disclosure backedThe whole thing should be looked at.
Not only the amount of donations but also theassistance by the major political parties in gettingsigns and advertising leaflets for their candidates inbulk when independents don’t have the same fundsto work with. This has come to light recently in themajor newspapers.

WHILE others may baulk at a 16-hourworking day, Jeni Mathiesonapproaches it with a laugh — and aprayer of thanks.
It’s an optimistic attitude she hastaken to working for some of Cardin-ia’s most disadvantaged people formore than 15 years.
And on Australia Day, her tireless-ness and devotion to others wererewarded when she was namedCardinia’s 2013 citizen of the year forher services to 4Cs — the CardiniaCombined Churches Caring crisisrelief centre in Pakenham.
Ms Mathieson, the centre’s director, said she was honoured to receive theaward. ‘‘But I’ve never done it for theaccolades. I’ve done it because I careabout the community.
‘‘Its my passion and God’s callingfor my life.’’
Announcing the award, mayor BrettOwen noted that Ms Mathieson was‘‘always on duty, and volunteers herassistance above and beyond normal
working hours’’. He said she hadplayed a pivotal part in establishingthe centre and food bank.
‘‘Her enormous drive and ambitionhas resulted in an increase in volun-teers [now more than 80] and thenumber of donations they get fromlocal businesses and the community.’’
Workers at 4Cs say proof of thatdrive and work ethic was illustratedbefore Christmas when she packed1000 hampers.
Ms Mathieson said she devoted hertime to 4Cs to ensure those who werestruggling in the community alwayshad a helping hand. ‘‘I want this to bea great community for my family andothers. Any little thing I can do I’ll doit.’’
Under her leadership 4Cs has grownto provide no-interest loans, crisishousing and bill and food assistance, something she describes as a ‘‘naturalprogression’’.
‘‘Giving people food is only just aBand-aid — you have to provide otherservices.
‘‘People are starting to know we are
here but there are some issues arising.‘‘We have to work on providing
more programs and assistance.’’Ms Mathieson t came to 4Cs in
1997 needing a ‘‘complete change’’after many years working in after-school care.
‘‘At the time I thought, ‘anyonecould keep food on the shelves’ —now I feel like I have got this monsterof an organisation. But I love it.’’
She said she was looking forward tothe challenge of 4Cs’ new charitystore, which has recently moved toPakenham from Garfield. ‘‘It’s beenexceptional so far and it’s bringingpeople to the main centre.’’
And after 15 years she doesn’t seeany let-up in her devotion: ‘‘Until Hetells me to stop I’ll keep going.’’

Memorial bench stolenPakenham police are investigating the theft of
a park bench installed as a memorial to a
Pakenham youth. Cameron Lowe, 17, died in
2010 after he was king-hit by another 17-year-
old youth. In July last year, Cameron’s mother,
Rikki Arney, pleaded for an end to the
antagonism after vandals defaced the bench,
installed by Cardinia Council in his memory.
His assailant was released last year after
serving only a year of his three-year sentence.
He was initially jailed for six years with a
minimum of four years but the sentence was
reduced on appeal.
Motorbike rider killedA motorcyclist has died after hitting two
parked cars in Narre Warren last weekend. The
29-year-old Cranbourne North man was
travelling west in Fleetwood Drive when he
lost control about 2.20am on February 3. The
2013 provisional road toll now stands at 18, 13
fewer than the corresponding time last year.
More trains at Cardinia RoadCardinia Road railway station will now have 13
extra services each weekday with the
completion of electrical upgrades last week.
The new timetable will include six additional
services during peak hour — three each in the
morning and afternoon peak. When the station
opened last year power issues prevented
trains from stopping there. The upgrades are
expected to ease congestion at Officer and
Pakenham stations. Metro says it will carry out
planned maintenance on the Pakenham and
Cranbourne lines this week. For information,
visit ptv.vic.gov.au/news/service-alterations.
Bonus to employ apprenticesAlmost $5000 will be available to employers
who take on a new engineering apprentice
before February 28. Apprenticeships are
available in careers such as metals, IT and
light manufacturing. The incentive is a part of
the federal government’s $57.5 million
Kickstart Initiative. For information, visit

Boots for allMelbourne footballer David Rodan is calling
on all Casey and Cardinia footy fans to donate

Australia Post outlets. All donations go to
Boots For All, a national not-for-profit
organisation aiming to break down barriers in
sport, and will be distributed to needy teams
across Australia. Next Tuesday, David Rodan

$30m driver training plan for Pakenham
Vroom to move: John Hill of Pakenham Auto Club watches a member go through hispaces on the club’s current course. Picture: Justin McManus/The Age
CARDINIA Shire could be at the heartof motor sport, road safety and drivereducation in Victoria, with a $30 mil-lion racetrack and driver training facil-ity planned for Pakenham.
Work is expected to begin soon onthe Cardinia Motor Recreation andEducation Park on a 50-hectare site inMcGregor Road, Pakenham.
Eight years in the planning and sim-ilar to the Eastern Creek Motor SportPark near Sydney, it is expected toopen in January 2016.
A joint venture between CardiniaCouncil and Drew Price Engineering,it will be used by car, motorcycle andgo-kart clubs, and as a driver educa-tion centre. The council, police and theTransport Accident Commission hopeit will help reduce hoon driving and, hopefully, the high road toll.
Cardinia Shire mayor Brett Owensaid there would be a strong focus ontraining and road safety, particularlyamong young people in the south-east.
‘‘Cardinia and Casey have got ahigh road toll in relation to young peo-ple and previous years have been really
bad for us,’’ he told The Sunday Age.‘‘This is an opportunity, working
with the council and local police, toreally educate young people aboutdriver safety and run programs to tryand reduce the road toll in our area.’’
Cr Owen, who is also a youth ser-vices officer with Victoria Police, saidthe complex would be a ‘‘quality, edu-cational, road-safety park’’.
‘‘A lot of young people use motor-bikes illegally — these monkey bikesor dirt bikes. This an opportunity foryoung people to be part of a club andplace to do it safely.’’
The motor park is expected toinclude a main circuit of about threekilometres for cars and motorcycles, multiple go-kart circuits, a skid pan, motocross and quad-bike circuit, anda motorkhana, autocross and buggycircuit.
Pakenham Auto Club and Koo WeeRup Motorcycle Club are expected touse the park. Motorcycle club secret-ary Brenda Corkery club said it wouldput young people off the road and intoa more controlled environment.
‘‘The amount of kids you hear tear-ing around the streets without anyprotective gear is concerning, we couldget them into a safer environment.’’
She said a planned TAFE educa-tional centre would let Cardinia’syouth take up automotive studies andbe ‘‘a place where the kids wouldn’thave to travel to Dandenong or War-ragul’’.
Pakenham Auto Club presidentLeon Prosser said the facility wouldplay an important role in driver train-ing. ‘‘We have got kids starting asyoung as 12. We can put them into acar and they have got to have anexperienced passenger with them. They get a really good understandingof what a car can do and just how dan-gerous it can be.’’
Cr Owen said the project would becompleted at ‘‘minimal’’ cost to thecouncil.
‘‘As soon as we have the go aheadfrom the Federal government we willwork with our two local clubs andwork out exactly what it will looklike.’’ — Chad Van Estrop, with The Age

FEATURESTORY
Texting drivers: r u crazy? It’s inter-connected oblivion. More and more people are being caught using their mobile phones or texting while driving.
It costs them a $282 fine. Sometimes it costs them — and others — their lives. CHAD VAN ESTROP reports.
You’re nicked: Allen Inderswisch of the Cardiniahighway patrol is on the lookout for phone-distracteddrivers.
Campaigner: Richard Lee was turned into aparaplegic when a driver talking on a mobile phoneploughed into his car. Picture: Craig Sillitoe/The Age
Richard Lee’s job is measuring people fortheir new wheelchairs. Some of them cometo him after diving accidents or falls and
others as a result of car crashes. And a few of that last group come to him
because the person who caused the crash thatcrippled them was talking on a mobile phone ortexting at the time.
Mr Lee can put himself in their place. Tenyears ago he was in a line of slow-moving trafficon a curve on Templestowe Road, Bulleen. Afour-wheel-drive coming in the other directionfailed to take the curve and ploughed into him.Its driver wasn’t looking, too busy chatting on hisphone. He turned Mr Lee into a paraplegic.
So he can honestly tell those clients he knowsexactly how they feel. But recently a man cameshopping for a wheelchair and left Mr Lee lostfor words. He admitted that he had been drivingwhile using his phone, oblivious and distracted, and it cost him the use of his legs.
‘‘He’s the only one I ever had who admitted tothat,’’ says Mr Lee. ‘‘And you have to bite yourtongue really. You might pass a comment like‘Well, that was a bit foolish, wasn’t it’ — hugeunderstatement. But really, what can you say?’’
Mr Lee is not usually so backward in comingforward. When he pulls up beside other driversand sees them chatting on their mobiles — or,worse, texting — he winds down his window andgives them a spray. If they don’t get the messagehe points to his wheelchair on the seat besidehim.
Not that it does much good, he admits. Everyweek more than 1100 drivers are pulled up bypolice and charged with illegal phone use. Duringthe most-recent police safety blitz — SummerStay, which ran from mid-November to January7 — 6077 motorists were charged with mobilephone offences. They face a $282 fine and loss ofthree demerit points.
And worse. Some face a meeting with someonelike Mr Lee, to be measured for a new seat ofwheels: ‘‘Unfortunately, it appears mobiles areincreasingly going to become a much morecommon cause of serious injury on our roads,’’he says. ‘‘And, of course, death.’’
For years, a series of studies has shown thedangers of mixing mobile phones and cars. ABritish study in 2002 found using a hand-heldmobile while driving was more dangerous thandriving with a blood-alcohol content of .08. Itsaid reaction time was 30 per cent slower thansomeone with that level of alcohol and twice asslow as a sober driver.
In 2009, a Virginia Tech study in the USshowed that dialling a mobile while drivingincreased the risk of a crash by almost threetimes. Simply talking on the phone made the riskof a crash 1.3 times as high.
In heavy vehicles the risks multiply. A truckdriver dialling a number is six times more likely
to cause a crash as an undistracted driver andreaching for the phone makes it seven times morelikely.
Text messaging while driving is far worse. Itincreases the risk of a crash by 23.2 times, thestudy found. A simulator study by the MonashUniversity Accident Research Centre found text-ing drivers spent 400 per cent more driving timewith their eyes off the road.
‘‘You cannot read or write an SMS withouttaking your eyes off the road,’’ Transport Acci-dent Commission road safety manager SamanthaCockfield told The Age in 2011. ‘‘In a 100km/hzone, in four seconds with your eyes off the roadyou’ve travelled about 200 metres. That’s a longway to travel without actually having anybody inreal control of the wheel.’’
Yet today the potential for drivers to be
distracted by such devices is at an all-timehigh, with social media, emails, texts and GPStechnology all available on smartphones.
TAC communications adviser Emily Boguesays increased technology and an “it won’t hap-pen to me’’ mentality was fuelling theproblem of driver distraction.
The latest available police statistics show that55,222 drivers — an average of 151 a day —were nabbed for mobile phone offences in 2011.
But much of the problem seems to be attitu-dinal. A TAC survey in 2010 found 43 per cent ofdrivers said they believed driving with a hand-held mobile was ‘‘extremely dangerous’’ andanother 42 per cent said it was moderately dan-gerous — yet, despite knowing the dangers, onein five drivers admitted making calls whiledriving; 34 per cent said they would take a call;32 per cent said they would read an SMS; and18 per cent said they would write one.
Inspector David Griffin of Victoria Policehighway patrol says drivers have an “automaticreaction’’ to reach for their phones while drivingand often disregard the dangers. “There seems tobe this preparedness by drivers, particularlyyounger drivers, to take the risk.
“People don’t seem to understand the risksassociated with using a mobile while driving —or if they do understand they are willing to take achance they might not get caught.”
And even after being caught and fined manydon’t seem to learn. Inspector Griffin says he is
surprised by how many reoffend. “We detect alot of people who have had tickets for using theirphones in the past.”
In Cardinia, highway patrol officers booked446 drivers last year for mobile phoneoffences. ‘‘People don’t like to be out of commu-nication and as a result they are reluctant to pullover and take calls,’’ says Sergeant AllenInderwisch of Cardinia police.
‘‘They see every call or text as the mostimportant one they will receive.’’
Sergeant Inderwisch says he regularly seesdrivers pulling out of car parks and drivewaystalking on the phone. ‘‘We can’t understand whypeople don’t just take that extra few minutes andtake the call while stationary.’’
Inspector Griffin says Chief CommissionerKen Lay has urged all sections of the force toincrease the focus on road safety enforcement.
“More than ever before we are seeing policefrom other areas focus on road policing.
‘‘There is an expectation for other police[outside highway patrol] to deal with road poli-cing matters.’’
This meant phone users were more likely to bedetected: ‘‘We have hopefully moved from thepossibility to the probability of being caught.”
While it is illegal in all Australian states andterritories to use a hand-held phone while driv-ing, many people don’t realise that in Victoriathat extends to using the phone while the vehicleis stationary but not parked, such as at trafficlights, says Inspector Griffin.
But he is also cynical about the selfishness andthoughtlessness of many drivers, saying thatincreasing the $282 fine would not necessarilychange driver behaviour.
“There is no evidence to suggest that if thepenalty was $1000 people would do anythingdifferent.”
While it is difficult to quantify the contributionof mobile phone use to the road toll, InspectorGriffin suggests that anecdotal evidence showsthat distracted drivers might be as responsible foras much as 25 per cent of deaths on the road.
Road Trauma Support Services Victoria, aBlackburn-based not for profit organisation, provides support and counselling for bereavedfamily members, witnesses, drivers and emer-gency service personnel who attend crashes, andalso runs seminars and education for those con-victed of traffic offences.
General manager Cameron Sinclair has nodoubt that there are people on both sides of thatclient-base because of mobile phones. ‘‘We don’ttake a policing role but are concerned at any typeof behaviour, whether it’s speed, alcohol ordistraction through technology that puts passen-gers, drivers or anyone else at risk,’’ he says.
‘‘I have a five-year-old son and I’d hate to thinkthat he is being put in danger — not to mentionmyself — by these people.’’

Windermere’s new chief has big plansBY CHAD VAN ESTROP
Changing of the guard: Windermere’s new CEO Lynette Buoy with chairman CarlStrachan.
ONE of Australia’s leading child andfamily welfare professionals is the newchief executive officer at the south-east’s most enduring welfare agency,Windermere Child and Family Ser-vices.
Lynette Buoy will begin at NarreWarren-based Windermere next week, after replacing outgoing CEO CherylDe Zilwa.
Dr Buoy has spent much of hercareer in organisations assisting vul-nerable and disadvantaged familiesand their children. Since 2009 she hasbeen CEO at the Centre for Excellencein Child and Family Welfare, the peakorganisation for almost 100 child andfamily services in Victoria.
For three years before that she wasgeneral manager with The Smith Fam-ily in Western Australia and prior tothat CEO at Melbourne’s Lady Gow-rie Child Centre.
Windermere is the oldest andfastest-growing community serviceorganisation in Victoria, serving a
population of 1.2 million across 10municipalities, but Dr Buoy has ambi-tions to embed its services into thecommunity, in part by making themmore accessible.
‘‘It’s about focusing on providingquality services for families and integ-rating them with what Windermerealready does,’’ she said.
Childcare would be one area wherethere would be added focus. That wasalready under way, with an early child-hood learning centre opening inFrankston last week.
Dr Buoy said the centre would be alearning opportunity for Windermere.
‘‘We will take what we learn fromthat centre and apply it to other areasin our organisation.’’
The 150-year-old service, whichbegan with a boys’ home in Brighton, now works with children, families andindividuals dealing with physical, emotional and sexual abuse, neglect, family violence and housing and dis-ability issues.
Dr Buoy told the Weekly she alsoplanned to widen its focus into coun-
selling and continue the current sui-cide prevention program.
‘‘They already do a great deal ofgood work. I’m looking to expandthat to support more people.’’
She wanted to help people re-engagewith the community.
‘‘It’s about making a difference forpeople who need that bit of extrahelp.’’
The organisation faced challengeswith growing demand in an areawhere seven in 10 residents wereunder the age of 40.
Outgoing CEO Cheryl De Zilwasaid it was a tough decision to leaveWindermere but she believed it was ingood hands. ‘‘I have enjoyed everyminute of my work at Windermere.
‘‘There have been significantchanges, the organisation has grown— not just in funding but in scope, operation and quality.’’
Dr Buoy, who has a PhD focusingon employee engagement and particip-ation in times of change, is confidentWindermere can cope with thechanges she is planning .

Firefighting crewsget welcome break
Hard yakka: Berwick firefighters take a break from backburning at the Aberfeldy fire last week.Picture: Keith Pakenham, CFA
BY CATHERINE WATSON
CASEY and Cardinia firefighters are taking awell-earned rest after their longest assignmentsince the alpine fires of 2003.
Almost 400 volunteers from 11 brigades inCasey and 13 brigades in Cardinia were part ofthe CFA operation at the Aberfeldy fire in easternVictoria, which has so far burnt through almost75,000 hectares.
Between January 17 and 26, crews wererotated on for two-day shifts from Cranbourne,Hampton Park, Hallam, Narre Warren, NarreWarren North, Pearcedale, Warneet, Tooradin,Berwick, Devon Meadows, Clyde, Bayles,Beaconsfield, Bunyip, Cockatoo-Gembrook,Maryknoll, Nar Nar Goon, Officer, Pakenham,Pakenham Upper, Koo Wee Rup, Lang Lang,Toomuc and Tynong.
Casey group officer Shane Keen said the fire-fighting schedule was designed to minimisedisruption to volunteers’ working life.
They left their home base about 6pm after ameal, camped overnight at Heyfield, spent the
following day on firefighting duties and returnedhome that night.
‘‘If they were away for two or three days, a lotof businesses would find it difficult to releasestaff. This way they only lost one working day.’’
CFA crews were stood down last Saturdayweek, when the Department of Sustainabilityand Environment took over responsibility for theAberfeldy fire.
However, the CFA says the fire is likely to burnfor months and could still threaten property, inwhich case volunteer crews could be called back.
Firefighters are also keeping a weather eye onthe Harrietville fire in Victoria’s alps, which hadburned more than 5000 hectares by Friday.
The CFA operations manager for the southernmetropolitan region, Trevor Owen, said the mosttesting time was likely to come on Wednesdaywith strong northerly winds predicted.
Mr Keen said firefighters would be in goodshape if called back.
‘‘The break has given everyone a chance torecharge their batteries. All is good at themoment from a welfare point of view.’’

Public smoking ban move given the flickBY CHAD VAN ESTROP
Puffed out: Richard Foster, left, wants smoking banned from all public places in Melbourne. Picture: Joe Armao/The Age
BUTT out! That’s the message local cafe and res-taurant operators have for a Melbourne citycouncillor who wants smoking banned in publicplaces.
The owners and some customers have pouredcold water on any suggestion that the proposedban could spread to Casey and Cardinia, sayingit could ruin their businesses.
The idea was floated by newly elected Mel-bourne city councillor Richard Foster last week.He said the aim was to make Melbourne moreappealing to visitors and reduce ambiguity forsmokers.
But Jane Kim, owner of Heritage Springs Cafein Pakenham, said her regular customers wererespectful to others when smoking outside hercafe.
‘‘People who don’t like smoking are alwayswelcome to sit inside,’’ she said.
One of her customers, Chris Mack, agreed, saying the ban was unnecessary and would behard to police.
‘‘As long as people stick to the designated areasand the rules are fair there shouldn’t be a prob-lem,’’ he said.
Phaedra Brown, manager of Beno’s Cafe in
Berwick, who is a smoker herself, said there werealready too many restrictions on smokers. ‘‘Idon’t think it should be banned — we have hadso many bans already.’’.
But Ali Raza, barista at Cafe Vanille in Paken-ham, welcomed the proposal, saying smoke
tended to drift into his cafe from outdoor areas.‘‘Smoking in outdoor public areas should be
banned 100 per cent,’’ he said.Michelle Matthes, owner of Cafe 127 in Main
Street, Pakenham, said many cafes in Warragulhad lost business as a result of a ban on smoking
in outdoor dinning and drinking areas. In Berwick, manager of Cafe Revival, Rob
Anderson, said he had no doubt he would alsolose customers. ‘‘People who sit outside at themoment tend to avoid smokers if they have aproblem.’’
Mr Anderson said he was sceptical any suchban could work effectively. ‘‘Nobody owns thespace outside our cafe, I don’t see how theywould enforce that law.’’
Quit Victoria’s policy manager Kylie Lindorffsaid a ban on smoking would have a wide-reaching effect.
‘‘Quit Victoria, along with the AustralianMedical Association Victoria, Heart FoundationVictoria and Cancer Council Victoria, has beenadvocating for a ban on smoking in outdoordining and drinking areas for some time and webelieve this should be the priority.
‘‘Smoke-free outdoor dining and drinkingareas reduce the visibility of smoking to youngpeople and protects hospitality workers andpatrons from second-hand smoke.’’
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle was concerned theproposal would be too sudden and questioned ifit would work.
‘‘Any law we bring in we have to make sure it isenforceable,’’ Mr Doyle told 3AW.

Keeping the love of footy alive
Able and willing: Guests including Casey councillors Amanda Stapledon and Geoff Ablett attended the all-abilitiesteam’s presentation night last year.
BY CATHERINE WATSON
IT’S a common pattern — youngsters with a dis-ability playing for their local footy team untilthey reach their early teens and fall by the way-
side.Mel Lindsay says that’s where Cranbourne
Football Club’s all-abilities football team is soimportant.
Now co-ordinator of the team, she becameinvolved because as an integration aide she knew alot of people with disabilities who loved their AFLfootball.
‘‘Some have played with local clubs as juniorsbut as they become older they no longer feel confid-ent and they’re not encouraged. We give them theopportunity to keep playing.’’
The team is recruiting now for the 2013 season. It’s open to anyone aged 14-40, male or female, with an intellectual or physical disability. Priorfootball experience is not necessary.
While the team is affiliated with the Cranbourneclub, players are welcome from all parts of Casey,Pakenham and Dandenong.
The players wear the Cranbourne Eagles jump-ers and use the club’s social facilities.
‘‘Their parents and other family members carrythe water or run the canteen, which all helps tocreate a sense of community,’’ Lindsay said.
Students from mainstream schools are welcomeas long as they are funded for an integration aide.
The team trains once a week at Casey Fields inCranbourne but training is not compulsory. Games
are played fortnightly through the season.Cranbourne all-abilities team open day is at CaseyFields Oval 3, 160 Berwick-Cranbourne Road,11.30am-1pm, Sunday, February 17. Prospectiveplayers are welcome to have a kick and enjoy adrink and hot dog. Details: Mel Lindsay on0432 595 780.

Winning knock: Buckley Ridges’ Greg Todd hits a driveagainst Lyndale in the final of the DDCA Churchill
Maintenance and Fabrication Twenty20 competition onWednesday night. Picture: Rob Carew
Ridges hits its strapsas home stretch loomsBY ROY WARD
BUCKLEY Ridges captain-coach Marc Calkin believes hisside is hitting top form as the DDCA turf 1 finals approach.
The Ridges won the Churchill Maintenance & Fabrica-tion Twenty20 grand final last Wednesday, beating Lyndaleby 59 runs on Wednesday then put 4-375 on SpringvaleSouth on Saturday, expanding from their first-day total of1-169.
Calkin said he liked what he was seeing from his side asthe season enters its most important weeks.
‘‘We really knuckled down with the bat on Saturday. Weare starting to peak at the right time of the season,’’ he said.
‘‘After making the runs last week we wanted to give theboys a good bat on Saturday and put some runs on theboard.’’
Ridges batsman Greg Todd was in exceptional touch, making 158 not out after starting the day on 75 not out.Calkin made 94.
Todd also top-scored in the Twenty20 grand final with58. ‘‘Greg is a class bat,’’ Calkin said. ‘‘He is hitting the ballwell and plays the ball nice and straight. He is patient aswell; he would have faced 300 balls on Saturday.’’
Calkin said the Ridges were also happy to come awaywith the Twenty20 title after falling short in the statewidecompetition earlier in the summer. ‘‘It was good for the clubto come away with something from the season and we cele-brated pretty well, as you would expect.’’
The Ridges took home a cheque for $1000 and thepremiership cup. Lyndale won $600 and losing semi-finalists Cranbourne and Heinz Southern Districts received$200 each.

Hard work pays off for Swans all-rounderBY BRAD McGRATH
CASEY-South Melbourne star Nathan Freitaghas been named in the Victorian 2nd XI to tacklethe Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy at CaseyFields starting tomorrow.
The gun all-rounder learnt on Wednesday hehad received the promotion after playing a star-ring role for Casey-South Melbourne in its upsetvictory over Melbourne.
He said he was surprised to receive the callfrom a Cricket Victoria representative telling himhe had been named in their 2nd XI, which will becoached by his Swans teammate Damien Wright.
‘‘I took a few wickets and made a few runs lastweekend and it’s nice to be acknowledged,’’ hesaid.
Casey-South Melbourne coach Mark Ridgwayhas openly backed the talented Traralgonproduct to one day represent his state.
Ridgway believes he is a ‘‘special talent’’ andwas clearly disappointed when Freitag wasforced to miss last cricket season with a kneeinjury suffered during football season.
But Freitag, who began his cricket journeywith Centrals Cricket Club, has impressed thisseason with 142 runs at 23 and 13 wickets at25.85.
‘‘I had a knee reconstruction at the end of 2011and missed last season,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s nearly back to normal now and I don’treally notice it.’’
Freitag, who has no plans to move fromTraralgon, said Ridgway told him to seize theopportunity with both hands.
‘‘He was pretty happy when he found out andjust said something like play your hardest and doyour best,’’ Freitag said.
Ryan Carters will skipper the side with Bush-rangers teammates Meyrick Buchanan, MichaelHill, Ian Holland, Alex Keath and James Muir-head also in the line-up.
Opening in 2005, the Darren LehmannCricket Academy was established to help emer-ging international players improve under Austra-lian conditions.
England internationals Monty Panesar, PhilMustard, Ajmal Shahzad, Samit Patel, Joe Rootand Alex Hales have all spent significant time atthe academy.
This year’s squad includes nine-Test Englishpaceman Liam Plunkett, Darren Gough’s18-year-old son Liam, and Mike Gatting’snephew, Joe.
The match begins at 10.30 tomorrow morn-ing.

The stadium’s management was recently takenover by Hampton Park Secondary College, which closed the facility because it believed itwas unsafe. But the closure means HamptonPark Basketball Association and the South East-ern Filipino Basketball League of Australia havenowhere to play their competitions, due to beginover the weekend.
Hampton Park Secondary College principalDavid Finnerty said the school was doing every-thing in its power to get the stadium to a levelwhere play could resume.
He said limited funding and Basketball Stadi-ums Victoria’s lack of maintenance during itstenure had left no option but a temporary closureof the stadium, which is on the school’s premises.
‘‘The roof of the stadium poses a threat to thepeople in the hall. We’ve already sought quota-tions and as I indicated we’re working withHampton Park Basketball Association and thecouncil to get this situation fixed.’’
The Weekly spoke to several association mem-bers who believe the school is holding them toransom. They say the school is demanding theyfoot the bill for the stadium repairs and publicliability insurance.
Association committee member Colin Siressaid it was crucial for the area that the stadiumwas reopened quickly.
‘‘The games are due to start this weekend butthey won’t go ahead this weekend,’’ he said.
‘‘The junior competition is what we’re moreconcerned about — a lot of the kids walk to thestadium and those kids will probably end upplaying around on the streets.’’
Mr Finnerty said a meeting was due to takeplace with all parties this week in an attempt toremedy the situation. ‘‘There is not a lockout ofanyone and the facility when we took it over wasabsolutely filthy,’’ he said. ‘‘We’re trying to workwith all parties with very limited funding to get itright.
‘‘Sport, particularly in this area, has a crucialrole to play and it gives kids an outlet where theycan absolutely enjoy themselves.’’

Hawks still in with chance as bowlers ruleDay out: Casey-South Melbourne’s Andrew Perrin snared five wickets on day one of their clash against Hawthorn-Monash University. Picture: Wayne Hawkins
CASEY-SOUTH Melbourne has claimed firstinnings points but now look set for a dogfight, with Hawthorn-Monash University also achance of securing an outright victory.
The Premier Cricket match is delicately poisedafter the Swans dismissed Hawthorn-Monash for79 on a pitch offering the seamers plenty of helpat Monash University.
The Hawks then destroyed Casey-South Mel-bourne’s top order to have them six down whenthey passed their total.
The Swans were eventually dismissed for 92with Nathan Freitag making a valuable lowerorder 18 to guide them home.
Debutant Caleb Grant (3-14), Daniel Rogers(2-30), Simon Black (2-28) and spinner Vinay
Tripathi (2-0) were the pick of the bowlers for theHawks.
Hawthorn-Monash coach Keith Jansz saidboth teams had batted poorly in conditions thatwere not overly bad.
‘‘If the bowlers were prepared to bend theirbacks and bowl in the corridor, maintain consist-ency — both team’s bowlers were on top — therewas something there,’’ he said.
‘‘But it was not a sub-100 pitch.’’Seamer Andrew Perrin was the hero for the
Swans with 5-18 while Freitag (2-16), English-man Richard Jones (2-3) and Damien Wright(0-20) were also dangerous and most import-antly frugal.
‘‘It was a bizarre day, we lost the toss and they
decided to bat,’’ Casey-South Melbourne captainJake Best said.
‘‘It was a hard pitch to score on and our bowl-ers bowled fantastic. I don’t think the pitch wasas bad as the scoreboard suggests.’’
While Hawthorn-Monash’s finals hopes aredashed, Casey-South Melbourne’s strong secondhalf to the season has it on the edges of the topeight.
‘‘We’ll be pushing as hard as we can to get theoutright win and be a chance of getting into thefinals,’’ Best said.
The Hawks will resume at 0-12 in their secondinnings after surviving 11 overs late in the daywithout losing a wicket.

Stingrays starsigns with ClaysBY ROY WARD
CLAYTON coach Ben McGee believeshe has landed one of the recruits of theSouthern Football League season, although how many games he gets fromformer Dandenong Stingrays star JakeCalvert remains an unknown.
The Clays have signed Calvert for thecoming season but will only have hisservices when he is not selected forVictorian Football League club Frank-ston Dolphins, where he has alsosigned.
Nonetheless, McGee said signingCalvert, a versatile and strongly builtkey position player, was a coup for hisclub, especially after losing reigning SFLdivision 1 best and fairest winner AaronPurves to Port Melbourne.
Calvert was one of the players con-sidered to be on the cusp of AFL draftselection last November before beingpassed over.
‘‘He could be the best recruit in theleague this year,’’ McGee said.
‘‘I think he will push into theDolphins’ VFL side and become
regular player. ‘‘And when we can gethim into our side he knows he will be abig part of our game plan.’’
McGee said he also hoped to form apartnership with the Dolphins in whichyounger Clays players get sent to theVFL club and players looking to comeback to suburban football could cometo the Clays.
The 19-year-old Narre Warren Northresident Calvert said he decided tomake Clayton his second club becauseof his connection with McGee, whocoached him in Hallam Secondary Col-lege’s football academy.
‘‘Ben asked me if I wanted to go andget a coffee and we talked about footyand about Clayton,’’ Calvert said.
‘‘Benny has always been there for meand done everything he could for mewhen he coached me in school footyand the Stingrays under-16 side so I washappy to head to Clayton.’’
After missing out on a list place orrookie list position in the AFL, Calvertwants to spend 2013 working on theareas of his game that didn’t impressrecruiters.
He impressed in three matches for theDolphins last year under the VFL ‘‘23rdman rule’’ in which a VFL club can playa TAC Cup player so the player can gainexposure to senior football.
Calvert said he was working hard inthe Dolphins’ pre-season programand wanted to stake his claim for ahighly prized place in the Dolphinssenior side, which has helped severalplayers earn AFL places in the past fewseasons.
‘‘Hopefully, I’m playing at Frankstonbut they will have a strong side this sea-son, so if not I’ll be happy to go back toClayton and play there,’’ Calvert said.
McGee said he would keep an openmind on how he used Calvert andwould seek out instructions from Dol-phins coach Simon Goosey.
‘‘Jake can play ruck, centre half-forward or centre half-back, so where Iplay him will be decided by which posi-tion Simon wants him working on.’’
Winta Chiller givestrainer a warm glowROSS Pecora is thankful he ignored Dale Smith’sadvice, celebrating his maiden city success followingWinta Chiller’s win at Caulfield on Saturday.
In-form jockey Smith suggested after the daughterof Artie Schiller won at Werribee last Sunday weekthat she had reached the end of her campaign andwould benefit from some time in the paddock.
Cranbourne-based trainer Pecora understoodwhere Smith was coming from, but decided to giveWinta Chiller one more run and the three year oldresponded with a strong win in the $80,000 ToorakToff at Rosemont Stud Handicap (1400m).
“It was a bit of yes and no coming here today,’’Pecora said.
‘‘I was going to tip her out because the jockey saidI should tip her out, but I thought I’d give her onemore crack.
“It’s been a long time coming [this city win]. Thisis fantastic.”
Winta Chiller settled back, then acceleratedimpressively when asked by Smith in the straight totake control of the race. The $9 chance held off a latechallenge from Hai Lil ($16) to score by a neck withAre There Any ($10) a long head away third.
Smith was happy to be wrong and suggested evenbetter wins could be in store.
“She’s still a little bit new and she was a little bittardy away today, but she travelled good throughmiddle stages and when the split came she wentthrough it without any hesitation,” Smith said.
“There are signs there of a nice filly on the up.”

HALLAM Kalora Park and Mordi-alloc tied in a thrilling Dandenongand District Cricket Associationclash at Hallam Recreation Reserveon Saturday.
Hallam Kalora Park was chasinga meagre 121 for victory but a dis-astrous batting display kept the vis-itors hoping for a miracle win.
Hawks captain-coach JohanVorster was disappointed with histeam’s batting performance, withonly Leigh Booth (61) showing anyresistance in tough batting condi-tions.
‘‘You just have to take it on thechin,’’ he said.
‘‘There is a reason why Mordial-loc are in a finals spot and wealways knew they wouldn’t give upthe 80 runs we needed easily.
‘‘They managed to pull out adraw, which is I suppose betterthan not getting any points.
‘‘Myself and a couple of othersenior players didn’t score runswhen we needed to and it was leftto the young guys.’’
Mordialloc opening bowlerChathura Athukorala was the starwith 7-37 in one of the best bowl-ing displays seen this season.
The Hawks were cruising at7-118 before Athukorala snaredthe last three wickets for just threeruns to tie the scores.
‘‘It’s the first time in my life that Ihave played in a draw,’’ Vorstersaid.
