Chuck Van Zyl / Star's End STEVE ROACH - NEW LIFE DREAMING (CD) NEW LIFE DREAMING has no Australian aborigines chanting, no didgeridoo, and no rattles or electronic wind instruments, but it does have sound contributions from Roach’s now-familiar collaborators Byron Metcalf and Jennifer Grais. The chords in track 1, “Perfect Dream,” are unusually major and cheerful for Roach, while track 2, “Where I Live,” is filled with birdsong and desert sunlight, a portrait of his Arizona home. (Thank God he doesn’t live in a big traffic-filled city!) The next two tracks are even better. Track 3, “The Ancients’ Way,” builds on Roach’s heroic wide-spaced “American modern

symphony” chords, and about halfway through, includes a softly tapped rhythm sequence by Byron Metcalf. This is just a wonderful, perfect Roach piece. The next piece, “Deep Sky Time,” is all-electronic, in which scintillating sequences sparkle over a deep drone. It’s a cosmological sound, evoking the brilliance and twinkle of the stars on a clear desert night. The last cut is a moving, gentle lullaby sung wordlessly by Jennifer Grais, while a muffled piano (played by Sam Rosenthal) accompanies Roach’s melody on the floating, sustained guitar. It’s a sweet ending to one of Roach’s best albums of the decade so far. Hannah M. G. Shapero / Ambient Visions DAVID HELPLING & JON JENKINS -TREASURE (CD) Spotted Peccary has always tended toward the softer, smoother side of electronic and new age music, and that is certainly the case with Treasure, an easy-going collection of very pleasant relaxed tunes. The collaboration between Helpling and Jenkins seems a natural one, their styles seamlessly fusing together into an organic sounding release that would be right at home alongside Patrick O’Hearn classics such as Trust and Metaphor. Warm synth pads, gently strummed guitars, rich echoing percussion and bright piano all meld beautifully together. The drums are particularly powerful and moving in the title track as it builds. “The Knowing” pulls back several notches, allowing room to breathe and feel the calm. Though I typically shun overtly new age music, this captures the best of its essence and distills it down into seven enjoyable minutes. “Into the Deep” features a cool repeating, vaguely tribal musical phrase as it gently bounces along. And so it goes throughout, not a bad track in the bunch. Treasure is easily one of my favorite cds of 2007. Phil Derby / Electroambient Space HOFFMANN-HOOCK & WOSTHEINRICH - CONUNDRUM (CD) Two musicians who have their own musical projects and other collaborations have come together for the first time. Conundrum was initially created from improvisational sessions and then subsequently finished by Markus Reuter who did the arrangement and added loops and layers. Ian Boddy (founder of the DiN label) also has an input with Markus on drum programming and additional sequences. Most of the tracks are structured to have rhythmic sections preceded by an atmospheric ambient mood. This becomes obvious in the second track “Bowed Visions”. Haunting tones stretch out across the soundscape; the textures -- clouded quasi-industrial in the background -- and ethereal humming vocals creating a slow motion vision of a distant Asian city. Eventually a kind of squiggly rhythm comes in, gradually building in pace while electric guitar sounds sear hither and thither. Hoffmann-Hoock is known for his Asian flavored music, especially under his Mind Over Matter recording name, and recently on Visions of Asia which was a collaboration with Peter Mergener. This sonic flavor is most noticeable on the title track “Conundrum”. Metallic and otherworldly drones skate about each other, eventually to be joined by wordless vocals (performed by SiRenee) quivering and “ahhing” like an intimate prayer calling to the Gods. Then a rhythm with an Indian style groove and sound starts up along with brushy percussion, elongated sitar-esque tones quickly snaking across the soundscape, and assorted effects. For me this is the best track. Bringing things to a close is the flowing piece “Moonlit”. A mix of drones and pads slowly shift as though we're moving over a dimly moonlit landscape, and in places sparing notes form a nascent melody or just add richness. Here the music hints at various moods from quiet contemplation to lament in a fitting end to the album.

After an uninspiring start in the first track, Conundrum begins to slowly entrance the listener. Sonically and atmospherically it's a beguiling work that needs repeated listening sessions for all its secrets to be unravelled. Dene Bebbington TANGERINE DREAM - STRATOSFEAR (CD) Behind the lines of analog synths and extended pieces that formed the basis of their classic albums, it is with Stratosfear that one gets, perhaps for the very first time in their career, a prefiguring of the more commercialized direction towards which Tangerine Dream were headed, and perhaps a decade or more down the road would swallow them whole. That being said, luckily that was still a distance off. Rising uncharacteristically out of a delicate web of twelve-string, the E minor title track "Stratosfear" is marked by a more streamlined sound than what was offered previously by this band: an increase in formal structure, the absence of VCS3 and improvisational room to lend their work some psychedelic edge, and the sequenced rhythms reaching their highest peak of accessibility thus far. Despite all this, however, it is still a very enjoyable piece due to its visible main melody, glowering Moog lines, and the build-up and discharge of dynamics that were still well-deployed by the band. "The Big Sleep in Search of Hades," very reminiscent of contemporaneous work by Cluster and particularly solo Hans-Joachim Roedelius, offers a meditative resting stop. A ballet trio of flute Mellotron, clavinet and bass guitar dance through minor key shades, then are momentarily intruded upon by more sinister calls from the Moog that seem to be almost peeking in from the previous track. "3am at the Border of the Marsh from Okefenokee" opens up with ghoulish Sergio Leone-like harmonica (!!), languidly delivered against the backdrop of the slow, drip-drop-drip-drop notes that play throughout the piece. I feel it's too bad they didn't stay with this idea exclusively; from here, the rhythm picks up to moderate pacing and the piece largely settles back like a reclining chair into 'C minor with modal soloing on Mellotron... too familiar sounding by this point and fully extracted on previous efforts Rubycon and Ricochet. "Invisible Limits" is probably the track that reaches the furthest on this album. The piece develops into the galloping sequencing that was introduced by the title track, before eventually getting lost in a haze, and then ending up with a brief elegy of piano and flute Mellotron. Stratosfear is another album that fans can safely catalogue in the "T" section of their CD collection, though in my opinion with the slope continuing to follow a modest linear decline, downward from the peaks of Phaedra and Rubycon. Joe McGlinchey ALPHA WAVE MOVEMENT - DRIFTED INTO DEEPER LANDS (CD) Melodic, floating and rhythmic electronic ambience. Drifted Into Deeper Lands is well titled since the delicate, meandering structures, lightly pulsing cycles and sparse melodies really do tend to carry the listener to places elsewhere. The rhythms created by sequencers and programmed percussion are on most tracks in no hurry to appear and in places the beats are so soft as to barely disturb the liquid surface of the music. Repeating, evolving patterns gently revolve forming differing thicknesses of sound, shifting densities and ethereal cloud masses from among which subtle themes emerge and disperse. Ever so slightly dark, expansive, immersive - the tone is serious and often quite beautiful. There are tribal suggestions in the percussive elements such as rain sticks and dull thudding drums. Effective use of echo and reverb bring a feeling of distance and scale whilst fragile electronic murmuring and warping dissonant undertones produce an

appealing sense of the organic. Silhouetted tangles of twigs and branches against a saturated red sky suggest a small part of an uninhabited, wild landscape. The feeling is one of welcoming, tranquil emptiness and twilight isolation, but clearly these 'deeper lands' are those of the psychonaut not the earthly traveller. The black/red graphic layout credited to Robert Marselje is simple with minimal text, adding to the overall impression. Six lengthy tracks ranging from 7.05 to the 13.58 title track make up this moving, atmospheric collection. Along with writer/performer Gregory T. Kyryluk, Guitarist Jeff Pearce is credited with 'ambient guitar atmospherics on the tracks "Awakening" and "Another Time... Another Place". The pieces on this album are all serene ambient soundscapes with well-matched airy grooves and absorbing spacey resonance. The long introductions and leisurely developments will have you imperceptibly wandering off so that when you look back your starting point has gone and you're quite lost. Anyone wanting something truly transporting with a variety of understated melodic elements to accompany them will enjoy this album, as will ambient fans who enjoy unobtrusive percussion or rhythm within their music. Space music lovers will find 'Drifted...' appealing for sure, as might German electronica fans that prefer the 'floaty' end of the spectrum. Morpheus TANGERINE DREAM - PHAEDRA (CD) In 1973 Tangerine Dream signed with Virgin Records, recorded Phaedra and embarked on the most commercially successful and critically lauded phase of their existence. What made Phaedra different from Tangerine Dream's earlier albums was the use of the sequencer (the band had used sequencers on their previous recording, Green Desert, but that album was not released until much later), a device that was a crucial component of the band's classic style. Take the sequencer patterns out and what you are left with spacey phrases produced by Mellotron, organs and synthesizers isn't tremendously different from what the band had already been doing. With those patterns in place, though, the music takes on a whole different dimension. What had once sounded airy, atmospheric even free-form moved with significantly more purpose and drive once locked into that mechanical pulse; by contrast, the passages without sequencers are rendered all the more effective. Nowhere are these new developments more definitively on display than Phaedra's powerhouse title track. Almost as great is "Movements of a Visionary," a piece of similar style that packs in even more of the band's new hi-tech toys. Ironically, though, it's the sequencer-free "Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares" that I think is the album's best. With an unexpectedly moving sense of grace, the piece absolutely perfects the "cosmic cathedral" atmosphere that recurred across the band's earlier records. Phaedra is a landmark album of 1970s electronic music and was also Tangerine Dream's most accessible and "musical" to date. I think that it is the best of the band's first six albums and one of Tangerine Dream's two or three best overall. Matt P. TANGERINE DREAM - RUBYCON (CD) The follow-up to the band's phenomenally successful debut, Phaedra, on Virgin Records, Rubycon is measured in two parts coming in at a very tidy and well-used 34 minutes. The opening six minutes of "Part One" make for a warmer opening than that of Phaedra. Arising out of the murky depths of shimmering organs, Froese and friends bask the listener in lush swashes of keyboards, the musical equivalent of an aurora borealis sweeping away gently in the

distant arctic. However, it is at around the seven minute mark and with the advent of echoing metallic sounds that a more ominous atmosphere begins to take over. Not soon after, the pulsing synth beats and string mellotron that are associated with the band's peak period arrive. Notice how when it begins the pulsing subtly expands from 4/4 to 5/4 to 6/4; I love bits like that. As this section of the piece picks up in dynamic, it reminds me a lot of something one might have found on Pink Floyd's Meddle, even with the same seabed organ sounds and backwards crescendo effects that were used to great effect on "One of These Days." "Part Two" follows a similar structure to "Part One." It begins with a free-form, rhythm-less opening primarily comprised of audio warping that increases and decreases slowly in register. This dissolves into a void of vocals. At around five minutes, this prelude once again gives way to an echoing, sequenced bass pattern and processed string Mellotron. These continue along a steady plane with all manner of effects whisking by, before eventually collapsing back into amorphousness at just under twelve minutes, then finally arriving at an end state of repose (flute Mellotron). This album paints a vast, abstract picture. I would say it is more accessible and less diverse compositionally relative to Phaedra, but by no means less mysterious or powerful. Like its predecessor, Rubycon is another classic Tangerine Dream work that is a must-have for those who want to experience the band on their game. Joe McGlinchey DEBORAH MARTIN & J. ARIF VERNER - ANNO DOMINI (CD) Two artists of renown on the Spotted Peccary label have come together to create Anno Domini - an ambient work with religious overtones and gothic undertones. It's an atmospheric work with a capital A. Rather than being devotional along the lines of, say, Paul Avgerinos's albums this explores from a spiritual angle the light and dark inherent in all of us. Most haunting of all on the album is the opening track “Kyrie”. This is a modern version of the Christian prayer put to music incidentally, Ian Boddy's track “Aurora” on the album of the same name is based on a 16th century Kyrie. Washes and windy sounds waft around male and female ethereal vocals that move gracefully across the sound field. The aural effect is one of cavernous space, as though the voices are setback in a large church with echoic acoustics. Then the voices come to the foreground, and along with the music become more resonant and intense. The music treads a line veering between light and dark. Imagine the gloomy ambience of a dimly lit church or cathedral where one's reactive mood depends on beliefs and inner life. The first four tracks feel monastic with lots of washes, subtle drones, and graceful effects like gentling tinkling glissandos and bell tones. For the last few tracks it's as though we emerge from the inside of a building into the semi-light aspect of cloisters. In “Dona Nobis Pacem” there's even rhythm and percussion played in a manner that evokes impressions of the medieval world. It builds to a climax with crashing cymbals, horn like melodic fanfares, and a male voice singing difficult to discern vocals. Kudos to Martin and Verner for Anno Domini. Without knowing the provenance of this work it'd be easy to conclude that it's the work of one person, such is the way their contributions fit together seamlessly. This is a satisfying work from an artistic and sonic perspective, even if enjoyment isn't the right word to describe one's appreciation. Befogged by the train of day-to-day affairs he stops to realize that these everyday troubles are imposed on him from the outside. And the man cannot be alone any longer, in private with himself. He always hurries up. He rushes through his life but for all that he does not feel it absolutely. A man has no time already to sense its flavor, to feel a joy of life and its everlasting love. It presents in splutters of a baby, in a glance of a beloved, in a gentle rustle of leaves, in a singing of birds and flickering lights of far stars. And this love presents inside every person and all one needs is to pause for a while and to look inside oneself. There is an inexhaustible ocean inside, and if one feels it, it can burst outside as a torrent, and flood everything around. A divine gladness slumbers like a lotus seed but the moment this beautiful flower starts blooming you can hardly find the words to describe this elation, delight, this divine love which is you yourself… Gandalf is a great musician. From the very first seconds he plunges a listener into a stream of his music. And you are being gently guided by it, you are just drifting on the waves of this music. Gandalf creates placatory surroundings with his gentle guitar passages, tender rhythms of keyboard instruments and pulsate percussion rhythms. His music is full of forgiving love and heart-healing tenderness. It is very expressive and full of images. While listening to “Lotus Land” you can see, at a certain moment, a land you have been looking for a long time, follow the paths winding through its shady woods, sappy meadows and murmurous springs and, after you have come back, sense its light in your heart. And nobody can ever take away the sensations that are within you because it is impossible to take away the divine things that are you indeed… Gandalf’s music is very positive. Prompting you to look inside yourself it arouses the desire to live a full life and act. And this action will be free of idle fuss and meaningless haste. Gandalf’s music contains an impulse that urges you to create and work. After all while extending love around you are extending love inside you as well… A divine circle of love. Feel it together with Gandalf’s music. “Lotus Land” is the music which makes your life much more interesting. The life becomes more optimistic and bright… Serge Kozlovsky / Translated by Tatyana L. Permyakova. KLAUS SCHULZE - KONTINUUM (CD) 2007 is a milestone year for German electronic music pioneer Klaus Schulze. He recently celebrated his 60th birthday on August 4th and has also released an excellent new solo album entitled "Kontinuum". "Kontinuum" is 76 minutes of continuous music consisting of three long tracks that form one long piece of music. Musically, the album is journey into Klaus Schulze's past, present and future as a musician. Fans of his classic 70's style will definitely feel at home listening to this disc. There are also elements that will appeal to fans today's techno and trance music as well. The entire "Kontiuum" journey begins with the appropriately title "Sequenzer (70 to 07)" with consists of the hynotic sequencer rhythms that harken back to the days of Schulze's classic "Mirage" album (notably the track "Crystal Lake"). Over the course of the track's 25-minutes, Schulze slowly adds different musical layers to the mix building the piece into a dynamic orchestral climax that only he can bring. As the main sequencer slowly fades out, we are left with nearly seven minutes of classic Schulze minor-key orchestrations that are once again reminiscent of his work in the mid-70s. "Sequenzer" goes directly into the 20-minute "Euro Caravan" which begins with a dark low-key ambient note progression. As the music progresses, Schulze adds more chordal layers as well as a sample of woman's voice heard in the background. At around the nine minute mark,

a dramatic sequencer rhythm slowly begins to fade in adding further depth to the music. Finally a techno-dance-like rhythm enters in and carries the piece the rest of the way. As "Euro Carvan" fades out, the sound of thunder ushers in the third and final track, the nearly 32-minute "Thor (Thunder)". Echoes of Schulze's debut album "Irrlicht" are definitely apparent in the intro with long-held drones and strange ambient sounds. Once again, after several minutes, Schulze brings in the sequencers which this time, have more prominence and drive. The drum rhythms are also more aggressive as well. At around the 23-minute mark, the rhythms fade into another trademark Schulze overture similar to the one that closed the "Sequenzer" piece alongside more thunder sounds and a brief ambient coda heard during the final minute of the piece. Without a doubt, Klaus Schulze has definitely proven that he can still work magic through his electronics on "Kontinuum". This is an even more consistent effort than his previous disc "Moonlake" and is an excellent overview of the many styles he has done over the last 35 years displayed with modern technology. Besides the excellent music, the packaging of the album is also excellent with many photos of Klaus at work in his studio alongside two insightful liner-note essays by musician Georg Boskamp and Schulze's business manager Klaus Mueller respectfully. There are also a few photos of Schulze on stage during his classic 70s period as well. With all this said, "Kontinuum" is highly recommended and is definitely a modern day classic from one of the legendary musicians who put electronic music on the map - the pioneering genius of Klaus Schulze. Louie Bourland / USA ION - FUTURE FOREVER (CD) Ion is the new solo project from David J. Hughes of T-Bass and Skin Mechanix. It is firmly rooted in the melodic Berlin school camp, without the rock riffs and power chords from other Hughes’ projects. The simpler, quieter approach pays big dividends, allowing the cool synth compositions to set the mood. The title track wafts in serenely, evenly. It breathes for a while before light sequencing and beats come in. Eventually the main melodic theme arrives, soaring over the top of the rest, its impact made by the restrained approach that leads us there. Deftly handled, this is a lovely understated way to open. Even softer is “Logoscape,” a dreamy musical reverie that leads us into “Minerva,” a romance-tinged piece that somehow manages to evade outright sappiness. Think of Tangerine Dream’s best soundtrack work from the 1980s and you get the idea. “Evensong” is similar in tone and style, though with a brighter sequencer line to build on. This one develops particularly nicely, with the same sure-handedness that permeates the entire album. “Farscape” is a trippy deep space journey. “The Silent Scream” is a nifty hybrid of modern shuffling beats and retro sequencing in relaxed mode. “Tangents” is pure Berlin school, with an atmospheric space music beginning and ending, and driving sequencers and rhythms in the middle. I particularly like the soft ethereal finish, which segues perfectly into the mellow closing track, “Flying Over Blue Waters.” I highly recommend Future Forever.
