Controlling factors
For all of the conference rooms and the executive boardroom,
Crestron RoomView provides wide-ranging room-scheduling
control and alerts the IT department when projector lamps are
reaching their end of life. It also lets the It staff remotely switch
tV channels and turn components on and off via the Web browser.
AVI-SPL worked closely with Crestron to provide additional
programming so that It would have more flexibility in scheduling
AV equipment in the rooms.
“We wanted more functionality with what we could schedule
through RoomView, and they delivered,” said tom LeClare, El
Paso’s principal analyst in It.
crestron solutions provide the el Paso It department with centralized control over the displays, making it easy to change channels on particular floors and rooms.

Electronic drop-down screens let employees keep track of the

A Coordinated Effort
Becauseofthelong-term,ambitiousnatureoftheproject,AVI-SPL
installed equipment and integrated the AV and It infrastructure
in phases that each encompassed multiple floors. this strategy
minimized the disruption to business operations as employees
were relocated to adjacent levels. AVI-SPL’s project managers
made sure all systems were delivered on time, within budget and
fully operational by coordinating with El Paso, the building owner,
architect and construction firm.
“the biggest challenge was getting the equipment installed before
it reached end-of-life,” Delgado said. “For items we knew would
be discontinued, we stored the gear. As new technology came out,
we gave El Paso the option of upgrading.”
to help in that process, Delgado said his team set up a system in

throughout the facility, all systems are managed by Crestron’s
Digital Media (DM) system, 15-inch touch panels and system
controllers. “Because of a lack of AV conduit in the building’s
construction, we designed a workaround solution that focused on
the use of Crestron DM,” explains Lois. “this solved two issues:
we wouldn’t need to use the traditional AV cables that relied on
conduit, and we could capitalize on preparing the infrastructure for
technological growth. As laptops, PCs and other sources change
from analog, they would now have a digital signal in place.”

“We worked with the city for nearly two years on the concept,
planning and final implementation,” recalls Design Engineer gerry
Pehl, AVI-SPL. “the primary challenge was an interesting one:
How do you create something that’s state-of-the-art, that does
everything you need it to do, and that you know how to operate
that only gets activated once every decade? We needed systems in
which every component is fully capable of robust, reliable, operation
24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Even the slightest compromised
performance can quickly result in tragic consequences.”
In September 2010, Minneapolis brought an advanced level of
speed and efficiency to its coordination efforts with the opening of
their new Emergency operations training Facility (EotF). Located
just outside the city, themulti-purpose building helpsmeet the
training and response needs of the Minneapolis Fire Department,
the Minneapolis Police Department and the City’s Emergency
Management Division, along with other regional partners.
“the initiative for an advanced EotF really started to grow in
urgency after the September the 11th tragedies, and quickly
gained momentum with the local bridge collapse in 2008,” says
Dave Roth, the city’s business information services manager.

Of Critical Importance
For this installation, Crestron’s DigitalMedia (DM) solution provides
a complete source-to-display, end-to-end engineered solution
for the City’s operational needs. “the key reason for our use of
Crestron DM was because the City’s operations rely so heavily
on broadcast television and the media for communications,” says
Pehl. “It was critical that the system be HDCP (high definition
content protection) compliant, and the DM system is geared
towards this protocol.”
As part of the Strategic Information Center (SIC), the Work Room

“If there’s a day with bad traffic, personnel can manage that

when an emergency is declared,” notes Pehl. “Even short of
a formal declaration of emergency, concerts, sporting events,
demonstrations and parades all pose an opportunity in which they
can ‘put up the EoC’ and practice with the technology so that
they’re fully prepared.”
Rooms 121 and 123 serve as Fire training Classrooms in their
primary purpose, but are commissioned as Logistics and Finance

independently, or even be combined to form the Command Center

conferencing table is available for leadership personnel.
When in EoC mode, the training rooms become the base position
from which the room coordinator shares information via the telex

easily bridges telephone access to the intercom. this quickly
allows field officers, or a supervisor that’s en route, for example,

With all the attention given to the displays, the level of audio at
Frankie’s was not to be outdone. From the crisp crack of a bat
to the heart-pounding intensity of engines gunning around a
racetrack, the audio certainly delivers. “overall, Frankie’s audio
system consists of 12 audio zones,” notes Callaway. Each zone
has the ability to supply a different audio feed sent to them, with the
option to be muted and have the volume changed independently.
this includes the two patio zones, two main seating area zones,
game room, party room, bar, DJ area, Sky Box room, office and

Lighting the Way
For the lighting, the original plan to use two 96-channel dimming
racks was abandoned due to the amount of infrastructure required,
includingpowerfeedsandtheHVACnecessarytocompensatefor
potential heat that could have been generated. Instead, AVI-SPL went
withonedimmingrack,loweringthepowerandHVACrequirement
in order to stay within budget.
As an alternative to traditional dimming and theatrical-style effects,
about 90 percent of the lighting over the platform is handled with
19 Elation Design Spot fixtures. these fully programmable dual-
purpose intelligent lights are capable of hard edge effects or
complete CMY color-mixed washes and backlighting. All dimming
as well as intelligent lighting is controlled by the 500-channel
Strand console.

Cancer Center have a sole mission dedicated to the prevention
and cure of cancer. Since the first patient admission in october
1986, Moffitt’s physicians, researchers and staff members have
worked together to establish a tradition of excellence offered in an
atmosphere characterized by kindness, caring and hope.
For the tampa, Fla.-based non-profit, growth in clinical care and
research rests firmly on a tradition steeped in compassion. this is
matched by an advanced approach with cutting-edge solutions
for technology and communications – effectively driving branding,
messaging and patient care.
“Asourculturechanges,theH.LeeMoffittCancerCenterstrives
to keep up with the leading technology innovations, including
the latest advances in video,” says John Maass, manager for
conferencing technology at Moffitt. “As part of our communications
strategy, Moffitt had a desire to be part of a user-friendly, Youtube-
style Web portal solution,” he adds. “For this, we turned to the
expertise of AVI-SPL. Moffitt Cancer Center has maintained a
positive relationship with AVI-SPL for over 10 years. Whenever we

goal was to provide a comprehensive system that could not only

for years to come as technology advances and expands.”
“We wanted to effectively share content on the main campus, and
also over the network to our satellite offices and affiliates around
the state,” adds Maass. Moffitt supports a large system globally,
which requires that they share time-sensitive knowledge and
research on a daily basis. today, their affiliate network consists
of 14 Florida hospitals, plus those in georgia and Pennsylvania.
the network also includes more than 400 community oncologists
that actively support medical education, quality improvement and
research initiatives.
Maass was also interested in implementing digital media throughout
their facilities. this would help to support knowledge transfer from
their previous archival system. “With 25 years worth of content in
our archives, we needed a repository that we could easily distribute
through video and live streaming services. We quickly realized that
digital signage was the critical element needed for our desired
success in patient care, improved communications and enhanced
infrastructure,” he adds.
In healthcare environments such as Moffitt’s, a robust digital signage
platform can seamlessly provide clean, consistent messaging
that’s easily able to be updated throughout their campus. this
technology can also quickly deliver wayfinding content for patients
and visitors trying to navigate a facility; and provide alerts such as
emergency notification.
Based on the current video conferencing investments and Moffitt’s
ambitious goals of driving video -- both internally and externally

is Cisco’s Media Experience Engine (MXE), which works as a key
building block for the use of video throughout the organization.
It frees It teams from the time-consuming and manual process
of transcoding from one format to another using a user-friendly,
intuitive workflow.
For example, Moffitt has a large library of archived videos. the MXE
makes it easy to show these videos on any device without having
to go through a manual transcoding of each file. In addition, the
MXE has several post-production features for enhancing videos
with Moffitt’s branding. It enables Moffitt to specify templates for
watermarks, trailers, bumpers, and captions for all video being
shown on their digital signage network as well as online.
Cutting-Edge Patient Care
Moffitt’s advanced infrastructure also includes Show and Share,

control content and provide valuable information to patients and
staff members. Beneficial options for educational content include
panel presentations on tumor board research findings, lecture

the design and implementation of Moffitt’s DMS was dispersed
over the course of a year, and today features approximately 40
displays throughout their campus’ Vincent A. Stabile Research
Building, Muriel Rothman Building (Moffitt Clinic), and the newly
opened Moffitt Cancer Center at International Plaza in tampa.
“the patient feedback we’ve had on digital signage has been
nothing but extraordinary,” says Maass. “We’re excited to bring
this advanced level of technology and improved communications
to our patients. not only have we cleaned up our campus by
removing all paper signs and other distractions, we’ve also
enhanced the safety of the facility by eliminating easels and other
obstacles that are in hallways and paths. the implementation of
digital signage at Moffitt has delivered a highly positive impact
between the relationship of our patients and our operations.”
