    Introduction

    Pre-PentecostThe Origin of Israels Religion

The world began with Adam and Eve. They worshipped

the true God until they fell in the Garden of Eden.

Obedience to Satan started a new religion called sons

of men. Sons of God included Abel, Seth and Enos.

Those who worshipped the true God are in Genesis

chapter five. Those that did not regard God are inGenesis chapter six.

The flood expelled the ungodly and reserved those that

served God for a better world. Noah and his three sons

repopulated the earth. Origins of nations and their

religions are in Genesis 10 and 11. God chose Abram,

whose family was pagan. Separated from his paganbackground, God began to reveal to Abram a new faith.

Abram received a divine call. Separated from his

kindred, he was guided by God on a pilgrimage of great

    blessings.

Promises and covenants made with Abram were

contingent on his obedience. Abram became the fatherof a new religion that worshipped the one, true God

(Ge 5). God made Himself known to Abram as Almighty

God and promised him generations of kings. Through

Abram, Messianic prophecies would be promised and

fulfilled in latter years. Abrams father Terah was

idolatrous and served false gods (Jo 24:13-16). God

changed the name Abram to Abraham.

God promised and gave Abraham a son called Isaac.

Isaac married and gave birth to two sons, Jacob and

Esau. In keeping with the religion of Abraham, all sons

had to be circumcised as a seal of their religious

covenant between God and their families. Esau rejectedGod but Jacob followed the faith of Abraham.

Jacob gained ascendancy in God and prevailed as a

godly man. His name was changed to Israel. Jacob,

blessed of God, challenged his wives to purge

themselves of all idols. All did except for Rachel. Rachel

died on the way while the rest returned to worship theGod of Abraham. The twelve sons of Jacob were not

godly but religious. Sometimes they used their religious

rites for their own personal vendettas. In the process

of time, the entire family ended up in Egypt because of

Joseph. The family of Israel lived in Goshen but did

not serve the God of Abraham. Only Joseph was an

exception to the rule of paganism in Egypt.

In the fullness of time, God revisited Israel as a nation

and brought them out of Egypt by Moses with signs and

wonders. Moses restored the faith of Abraham to the

nation of Israel in Egypt. The Journey from Egypt to

Mount Sinai would make Israel a distinct people with a

peculiar religion, having rites that separated them from

    all other nations.

At the mount, the people were organized, given a

constitution and were provided a pattern for a peculiar

worship. God visited His people and gave to them laws,

testimonies, statutes, commandments, judgments, ordinances, and doctrines to keep and observe. Israel

and distinctiveness second to none. Worship included

festive seasons, constitutional obligations, dietary laws

and dress codes for all. God instituted divisions of labor,

    worship ordinances, mediatorial relationship, sacrifices,

    and oblations specifications.

The most sacred of times were the annual requirements

for all men to appear before the Lord three times

annually; no one was ever to come empty-handed, and

all were required to celebrate the festive seasons:

Passover feast which commemorated leaving Egypt Pentecost feast which commemorated the giving of

    the law

    Tabernacle feast which commemorated Israels

    wilderness experience

Israel did not observe Pentecost, and was inconsistent

in their observance of the feast of Passover and thefeast of Tabernacles. As a nation they were historically

unfaithful to the old covenants and festive rites.
