In the first reading from Genesis God makes a cove-nant with Abram and promises to Abram that he would be made a great nation and be blessed. God promises generously to Abram all this and the only appropriate response from Abram is his faith…do we recognize the Father’s generosity for us? Do we live a life of faith?
Jesus’ trip up the mountain to pray with Peter, John, and James takes a rather unexpected turn. The apostles wit-ness Jesus’ transfiguration into his full glory, which will not be fulfilled until His death on the cross and resurrection from the tomb. What is interesting about the transfiguration is that Mo-ses and Elijah are there with him and sharing in his glory. On one level of understanding, Moses represents the law and Ten Commandments; Elijah represents the prophets of the Old Testament. Jesus is the fulfillment and completion of the law and the prophets. In addition to this, a covenant is being formed be-tween Father and the Son, Jesus. The Father asserts his author-ity like He did with Abram and states, “this is my chosen Son; listen to him.” The Covenant the Father makes with his son is that all who have faith in Jesus and listen to him are able to join in Jesus’ death. You see, Moses and Elijah, who died in history, are conversing with Jesus about his sacrifice on the cross in present time and glories of the resurrection are shown to these three apostles in Jesus and shared by Moses and Elijah. These great men of the Old Testament are enjoying the benefits of the New Testament, the New Covenant of eternal life. The Father is speaking to us that we are to listen to His chosen Son by purging ourselves of the evils in our lives during this season of Lent and embark on living lives of faith. None of us are perfect, so we all have something to purge and much more to hear from Jesus. If we take serious the Father’s advice for us that Jesus is the Son of God and listen to him, then we too will share the gift of the resurrection because we will be living in the Body of Christ which is forever. Consider that when God calls us to eternal life and judgment, we probably will not have advance notice. Consider the Earth Quake in 2011 which caused a devastating tsunami to crash upon shores of Japan; or, the Indian Ocean earthquake/tsunami of 2004 killing over 200,000 people across a dozen countries. California is connected to what geologist call the ring of fire where earthquakes happen often and periodically with severe strength. The chance of the “Big One” is high and could happen at any time. Not to mention the annual “Santa Ana” winds and fires we face. Is your home and family ready? Do you have a survival plan and kit in your home in case of a natural disaster? Every home at the minimum should have stored 3 to 7 days of food, water, a first aid kit, bible, and rosary. Sometimes there is nothing to be done to protect our mortal life, but it is our spiritual life which is true and is how we are able to share in God’s divine life. Are you ready to meet the Lord?

En la primera lectura del Génesis, Dios hace un pacto con Abram y le promete a Abram que será hecho una gran nación y sería bendecido. Dios promete generosamente a Abram todo esto y la única respuesta apropiada de Abram es su fe... ¿reconocemos la generosidad del Padre por nosotros? ¿Vivimos una vida de fe?
El viaje de Jesús a la montaña para orar con Pedro, Juan y Santiago da un giro que no se espera. Los apóstoles son testigos de la transfiguración de Jesús en su gloria plena, que no se cumplirá hasta Su muerte en la cruz y la resurrección de la tumba. Lo interesante de la transfiguración es que Moisés y Elías el Profeta están allí con él compartiendo su gloria. En un nivel de entendimiento, Moisés representa la ley y los Diez Mandamientos; Elías representa a los profetas del Antiguo Testamento. Jesús es el cumplimiento y la finalización de la ley y de los profetas.
Además de esto, se está formando un convenio entre el Padre y el Hijo, Jesús. El Padre afirma su autoridad como lo hizo con Abram y afirma: "Este es mi Hijo elegido; escucharlo. La Alianza que el Padre hace con su hijo es que todos los que tienen fe en Jesús y lo escuchan pueden unirse a la muerte de Jesús.
Tu miras, Moisés y Elías, que murieron en la historia, están conversando con Jesús sobre su sacrificio en la cruz en el momento presente y las glorias de la resurrección se muestran a estos tres apóstoles en Jesús y son compartidas por Moisés y Elías. Estos grandes hombres del Antiguo Testamento están disfrutando de los beneficios del Nuevo Testamento, la Nueva Alianza de la vida eterna.
El Padre nos está diciendo que debemos escuchar a Su Hijo elegido purgando de los males de nuestra vida durante este tiempo de Cuaresma y embarcándonos en vidas vivas de fe. Ninguno de nosotros es perfecto, así que todos tenemos algo que purgar y mucho más que escuchar de Jesús. Si tomamos en serio el consejo del Padre para nosotros de que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios y lo escuchamos, entonces nosotros también comparti-remos el don de la resurrección porque viviremos en el Cuerpo de Cristo que es para siempre.
Considera que cuando Dios nos llama a la vida eterna y al juicio, probablemente no tendremos aviso previo. Considere-mos el terremoto de la Tierra en 2011 que causó un devastador tsunami que se estrelló contra las costas de Japón; o, el terremo-to/tsunami del Océano Indico de 2004 que mató a más de dos cientos mil personas en una docena de países. California está conectada a lo que el geólogo llama el anillo de fuego donde los terremotos ocurren a menudo y periódicamente con fuerza se-vera. La posibilidad del "Uno Grande" es alta y podría suceder en cualquier momento. Y no mencionar los vientos y fuegos anua-les "Santa Ana" a los que nos enfrentamos. ¿Está listo tu hogar y tu familia? ¿Tienes un plan de supervivencia y un equipo en tu hogar en caso de un desastre natural? Sin embargo, una mayor importancia que la prepara-ción física es ¿estamos listos para ver a nuestro Señor cara a cara? Dios nos llama a todos a dejar atrás nuestras viejas costumbres y a seguirlo, confiando completamente en Él. Algunas de las viejas costumbres que tendremos que luchar por dejar atrás podrían ser el materialismo, el egoísmo y la codicia. Sin embar-go, Dios promete mostrarnos una nueva tierra y una mejor manera de vivir. Recuerda lo que dijo Santa Teresa de Calcuta: "Dios no nos llama a tener éxito, Dios nos llama a ser fieles".
Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1)
God calls all of us to leave behind our old ways and to follow Him, placing our complete trust in Him. Some of the old ways that we may have to struggle to leave behind might be material-ism, selfishness, and greed. Yet God promises to show us a new land and a better way to live. Remember what St. Teresa of Calcutta said, “God does not call us to be successful, God calls us to be faithful.”

CORONAVIRUS AND OUR PARISH PRECAUTIONS
Dear Community Members,
With the fear of a potential pandemic due to the “Coronavirus”, our bishop of San Diego is asking all par-ishes to take prudent action: 1. Suspend distribution of the Precious Blood of
Christ. 2. Suspend shaking of hands and physical contact during the
exchange of peace. 3. Suspend the reception of communion on the tongue.
Saint Stephen community will follow the guidance and caution recommended by Bishop McElroy during the entire season of Lent. During Holy Week, I will reevaluate the danger for the Triduum and Easter Season. Please pray for those who are ill and have died. Blessings, Fr Luke
