Description Training in the Master program in Bioengineering focuses on research and development of technologies applied to life sciences. Students gain solid technical training by studying bioengineering.

Specializations of bioengineering include disciplines such as mechanics of biological systems, transport phenomena, biomimetics and tissue engineering. It is also possible to opt for a Minor in Biomedical Technologies or in Biocomputational Sciences. These minors are offered in collaboration with the sections of Computer Science, and Microengineering. The former prepares for the mastering of technologies for diagnosis, cutting edge analytical methods and medical equipment. It gives students the opportunity to be involved in projects related to the application of nanotechnologies to living organisms. The latter orients students towards the modeling of biological systems and bioinformatics.

Master of Science in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology


Description Scaling up from a laboratory reaction to an industrial process is the main challenge for chemical engineers. This is a complicated optimization problem at many levels: environmental impact, energy consumption and cost must be minimized, and the quality and process safety maximized.

The Master’s program in Chemical and Engineering and Biotechnology focuses on several important tools such as innovative processes and separation techniques, biological engineering, biotechnology, catalytic engineering and biomaterials, including chemical process safety.

Master of Science in Computational Science & Engineering


Description The Master in Computational Science and Engineering at EPFL aims at educating holders of Bachelor degrees in Basic Sciences and Engineering in the interdisciplinary field of simulation-based engineering science. The presence of the CECAM (Centre Européen de Calcul Atomique et Moléculaire), the new CADMOS centre (Center for Advanced Modelling System) in the Lake Geneva region, as well as the future development of HPC at EPFL form an exciting environment for the enrolled students.

The curriculum is designed to provide students with basic skills such as numerical algorithms, modelling in continuum mechanics, image processing and visualization. It will also provide training in advanced tools for HPC such as parallel computation, advanced multiprocessor architecture and advanced numerical methods for differential equations. Finally a wide range of application courses in Biology, Chemistry, Civil, Environmental or Mechanical Engineering with a strong HPC component will be offered.

The student will complete an industrial internship and the Master's programme will be concluded by a scientific thesis in a research lab.

Description The MS in Computer Science offers a unique choice of courses that range from advanced digital technologies to distributed information systems and security, and include such emerging disciplines as biocomputing and service science. This 120 ECTS programme offers specializations in all these technical areas, as well as an option for a minor in the management of technology. With a number of world-class faculty members, our aim is to offer students the best computer science curriculum in Europe. After completing the 90 ECTS of coursework, Master's students write a thesis, the reaserch for which can be done at EPFL, at a partner university, or at one of the companies participating in our active internship programme (which includes companies both in Switzerland and abroad).

Description The Master of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering covers both theoretical foundations and practical aspects of the discipline, and aims at forming highly competitive researchers and professionals in the fields of electrical and electronics engineering. Students will be prepared for a wide variety of professions in electronics (micro, nano, RF, VLSI), information technologies (RF and antenna engineering, photonics, signal and image processing and analysis, multimedia communications, multimodal data processing,, electrical energy (mechatronics, power electronics and systems, electric drives, efficient conversion and storage, renewable energies), biomedical instruments and space applications and technologies. In addition to attending regular lectures offered by our internationally recognized professors, students participate in various laboratories and group projects.

Master of Science in Energy Management and Sustainability


Description The Energy Management and Sustainability (MES) degree is a unique interdisciplinary opportunity fully geared towards achieving lasting advances in a world where the issue of sustainability has become paramount. Students receive theoretical and practical training, using state-of–the-art environmental and sustainable research & development framework.

The objective of this innovative Master program is to educate engineers with a multidisciplinary profile, capable of mastering real-world thinking and complex problem solving. The degree is earned after obtaining 120 ECTS over a two-year study period. The curriculum is mainly completed at EPF-Lausanne, Switzerland, while the second year may be held partly at EPF Lausanne and partly at EPFL Middle East, Ras Al Khaimah, U.A.E.

The program uses a broad-based educational platform - which includes courses across all of EPFL's programs in Lausanne - to train the new generation of professionals who will tackle critical issues in energy management and sustainability. A new project-focused curriculum has been created, built on scientific rigor and professional practice, to provide a unique, interdisciplinary training within this domain. The new generation of problem solvers will be able to understand complex systems such as: smart grids for electricity distribution; water dissemination systems; environmental services and electronic networks that control energy consumption. And ultimately, to be able to both maximize their efficient use and minimize their negative impact on society.

Strong emphasis will be placed on dealing with engineering tasks, taking into consideration important technical, economical, environmental, safety and social constraints. Students will also gain skills in project management and implementation that will help them find solutions for a wide range of energy engineering issues.

Multidisciplinary projects are proposed at the beginning of the program, and a mentor is assigned for each project. Students will work in a team to address these projects. An industrial internship will provide practical experience in a professional setting.

They should also have a solid background in mathematical analysis, statistics and probability theory. In addition applicants to the MFE should command either one formal computer language such as C, C++ or Java, or a high-level language such as Matlab or Mathematica.

Description The Master in Management, Technology and Entrepreneurship offers a new and exciting curriculum designed to young engineers and scientists acquire substantial strength and depth in conceptual and analytical foundations of management.

Description The MSc in Applied Geophysics is a two-year joint degree programme offered by ETH Zurich together with Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) and RWTH Aachen University (Germany), building on the strengths and complementary expertise in Earth Science at the three universities. Description The MSc in Atmospheric and Climate Science teaches the in-depth understanding of the atmospheric processes and their interactions, ranging from the molecular to the global scale and from short-lived phenomena to changes over millions of years. Students achieve quantitative knowledge on atmospheric dynamics as well as physicochemical processes and cycles, on the interpretation and prediction of weather and climate, and on paleoclimatology.

Description The MSc in High Energy Physics is Joint Master programme of ETH Zurich and École Polytechnique (ParisTech). Description There are good reasons to study Africa. If one gets engaged with the continent at a deeper level, hardly any of the usual recipes turn out to be reliable. Today, the multiple demands put to those who deal with Africa or its people cannot be covered or communicated within a single discipline. Where the usual interpretations fail, new knowledge is called for. In Basel, knowledge about Africa has been accumulating for decades. The Centre for African Studies joins these capacities by offering a specialized interdisciplinary Master's study course in African Studies. For the first time in Switzerland, Africa has become the subject of a course of its own.

In the interdisciplinary MA course African Studies students acquire a broad, interdisciplinary knowledge about Africa. They are taught methods allowing them to analyse and understand the complex relationships between natural, social, cultural, political and historical factors, as well as the skills to communicate these findings.

Master of Science in Chemistry


Description The master's program offers the possibility to acquire specialized knowledge in the different areas of chemistry. Students are trained in formulating chemical problems within a given frame. They are taught how to develop and conduct theoretical and experimental studies and how to find appropriate solutions. In the master's program, students have a free choice between specialized courses from the different areas of chemical sciences. They are also offered specific experimental training in elective lab courses. During their masters thesis they acquire a deeper insight into a well-defined, specific research area of their choice. Description The Computer Science curriculum at the University of Basel is tailored to the natural sciences and provides an application-oriented, modern Computer Science education based on a sound mathematical knowledge.

Master of Arts in English


Description English Literature focus on texts in the English language written in different periods and of different types, in order to understand them in their cultural, social, and historical context and to compare them with those produced at other times and in other cultures. The specific conditions that are unique to literary communication should be recognised and described - even when contrasted with other significant forms of artistic creativity, such as the cinema, theatre and the creative arts. With this in mind, the students develop skills in analytic procedures, methods and discourse characteristic of the study of literature and culture and learn to apply them.

The English course consists of two academic areas:

1. English Linguistics covers the fields of sociolinguistics and the sociolinguistics of English as a world language, as well as cognitive linguistics and the acquisition of the English language.

2. English Literature covers English literature since the Renaissance, as well as the literature and culture of North America and other English-speaking areas of the world.

The lectures and seminars on Linguistics and Literature are complemented by courses on language training, English language teaching methodology and regional and cultural studies.

Master of Science in Epidemiology


Description While medical doctors investigate disease in individual patients, epidemiologists investigate health of populations. Epidemiologists study disease outbreaks, conduct disease surveillance, identify health risk factors and are involved in disease screening. They design appropriate studies, they collect and analyse data using a variety of methods and contribute to the interpretation of the results.

Epidemiology is the scientific basis to improve human health and well-being through a better understanding of disease- and health systems. It helps policy makers to effectively plan an evidence-based public health system.

The MSc program in Epidemiology at the University of Basel is run by the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), an internationally recognized centre for public health excellence.

The thesis work - which extends over a whole year - is usually embedded in a research project in one of the Swiss TPH Units, most often within the Department Epidemiology and Public Health. The MSc thesis work is typically a field-based project in Switzerland or abroad.



Admission requirements Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences, medicine or veterinary medicine with a minimum average degree of 5.0. Students with a BSc in a different branch will be assessed individually. Basic knowledge in epidemiology/statistics of at least 4 CP.

MAS in European Integration


Description For more than 19 years, the Europainstitut has been offering an interdisciplinary postgraduate study programme, leading to the diploma «Master of Advanced Studies in European Integration (MAS)». This programme can be studied now as well in an English-only version, and not only in the bilingual version (German/English). The offer is aimed especially at interested persons without German language skills.

The curriculum of the «MAS in European Integration - in English» is identical with the programme of the bilingual «MAS in European Integration».

Two attractive certified specialisations are (optionally) offered within the programme: a Major in «International Business» and a Major in «Conflict and Development».

All specials – such as extra events or the optional study trips to Geneva, Strasbourg, Luxembourg and Brussels – are open for students of the MAS - in English as well.

Excellent lecturers and experts from science and the practical field ensure a high quality programme in an international environment. The limited number of study places available guarantees that students are provided with individual supervision.

To be awarded the MAS-diploma, a student must obtain 60 credit points (CP). The basis for awarding points is the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). 20 CP are awarded for completing all compulsory modules, 6 CP for the Master’s Thesis. The remaining 34 CP may be obtained by combining optional units (advanced modules). The Diploma “Master of Advanced Studies in European Integration” is jointly awarded by the Faculties of Law, Humanities and Economics of the University of Basel. It is recognized internationally.

The programme comprises 70 course-days and can be completed in one (full-time) or two years (part-time). The one year course encompasses 15 lessons per week, plus preparation.

The 2-year course is based on the same curriculum; the same credits are expected; the study fee is the same. The study programme for the part-time, 2-year-course starts at the same time as the 1-year-course with the introduction in mid-September (autumn term).

In consequence, the students in the 2-year-course take only one part of the compulsory introductory modules, so that side-occupational responsibilities etc. are still possible. The remaining compulsory modules have to be accomplished in the second year then.

Similarly has to be dealt with the advanced modules, always offered in the spring term. As the compulsory modules secure solid fundaments in all three special fields and are precondition for many advanced modules, there are certain limitations with the individual compilation of deepening modules in the 2-year-course option.

In terms of the advanced modules, the diverse programmes and the number of modules offer students in the 2-year-course some freedom in terms of the study composition. On the other hand, the MAS-study programme requests especially during exam periods some flexibility on behalf of the students, respectively their employers.

Candidates must have a good command of the programme language, both orally and in writing. Should applicants not be native speakers of the required language and not be able to demonstrate that they acquired the necessary skills as part of their previous training, they must provide a certificate to prove their language skills. In this case, the certificate must be handed in one month before the beginning of the course at the very latest.

Possible language certificates are, for example, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Comparable certificates from other language centres or University departments may also be accepted.

Master of Science in Infection Biology


Description In Infection Biology host-pathogen interactions are studied, why and how pathogens cause disease, and how we can interfere to prevent or cure infectious diseases. Basic research on viruses, bacteria, protozoa and helminths allow us to understand the biology of these pathogens and thus to develop tools for better diagnosis, and new and safe drugs and vaccines.

The MSc program in Infection Biology is run by the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), an internationally recognized centre for Infection Biology and International Health. After one semester of lectures in parasitology and infection biology the students tackle a master project which extends over a whole year. This project is normally embedded in one of the units of the department Medical Parasitology and Infection Biology at Swiss TPH and typically laboratory-based. Writing of the thesis and the final exam conclude the master program.

Master of Science in Infectious Diseases, Vaccinology and Drug Discovery


Description The programme comprises 18 months of formal teaching and research work, of which students will spend the first 4 months (September to December 2011) in Basel, Switzerland, attached to the Swiss TPH and the Biozentrum of the University of Basel, before moving to Singapore for the research work and their selected course modules. As the vacancies for this programme are limited to a maximum of 20, candidates will be admitted based on the selection criteria of the Admission Committee of the National University of Singapore and the Teaching Committee for Biology of the University of Basel.

Funding Selected students will be offered a stipend which covers the 18 months of studies, including tuition fees, research and travel expenses. The number of stipends is limited, and students may opt for self-funding.

What will you learn? Students will obtain a comprehensive insight into the basics of infectious diseases, as well as the strategies of vaccine designing and drug discovery. Lectures will complement a research project undertaken within leading laboratories at NUS and NITD.

MAS in International Health


Description The programme focuses on strategies of a modern Public Health approach which takes into account conditions of countries with resources constraints. International Health describes a strategy combining the knowledge and experience of several disciplines (epidemology, social sciences, medicine, economics, management sciences, biology, etc.). The objective of the programme is to enable participants to implement sustainable primary health care, programmes and projects related to health in a setting of countries with limited resources.

The Master of Advanced Studies in International Health was established by the Swiss Tropical Institute in 1998 and was accredited by the University of Basel in 2001. In October 2007, this programme was also accredited by the «Schweizerische Universitätskonferenz» for the period of seven years without conditions imposed.

The programme is equivalent to a one year full-time Master with 60 ECTS.

The Students enrol at STI for the core course «Health Care and Management in Tropical Countries» (18 ECTS). After successfully completing the core course, students enrol for optional modules (1 to 5 weeks each) at one of the tropEd partner institutions. There they study supervised by an inidividual tutor. Credit Points have to sum up to a total of 22 for these optional modules.

Additional 20 ECTS will be given for the research project or thesis with which participants prove that they have acquired both knowledge and skills.

All participants have to take courses in at least 2 institutions belonging to the tropEd network, a legal association of 27 European and 7 overseas institutions of higher education.

Since 2005, the MIH is part of the Swiss School of Public Health+ (SSPH+).

Description During the master's program students are associated to a research group of one of the major fields of Nanosciences. Optional courses and project works in Molecular Biology, Chemistry and Physics ensure an interdisciplinary character. MAS in Peace and Conflict Transformation


Description The complex global problems and the numerous international and interpersonal conflicts represent great challenges at the personal, social and international level. There is a growing demand for professionals with knowledge and skills in nonviolent and creative conflict transformation, who can serve in private and public institutions.

This transdisciplinary Master of Advanced Studies Programme is concerned with the various forms and conditions of peace and its obstacles. Peace means the absence of war, and much more. One can distinguish between direct, structural and cultural violence. Direct violence means hurting and killing; structural violence is the slow death from hunger and preventable or curable diseases caused by extreme inequality and political oppression; and cultural violence consists of the justification of direct and structural violence in education, the media, literature and art, in the form of nationalism, racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination and prejudice. Peace means the absence of those three forms of violence and includes measures to alleviate and heal past violence and prevent future violence.

This programme explores all of these aspects of peace. Its objective is to enable the participants to play an active role in peaceful conflict transformation and in creating a culture of peace. In addition to conveying theoretical knowledge and practical skills for peace work, our programme emphasizes also the personal development of the participants. They learn to analyze conflicts, to make prognoses, and to design and implement creative solutions. They learn to detect growing tensions early and know methods to deescalate conflicts and prevent violence. They learn how to mediate between conflict parties and how to encourage conciliation after violence. They learn how to promote peace and development through education and action, and how to facilitate intercultural understanding and cooperation.

The educational concept combines interdisciplinary peace research with the teaching of constructive conflict transformation, the practical experience of multicultural coexistence and the development of personal competencies for peace. The study is divided into 10 modules, addressing the following topics:

Introduction to the Methodology of Peace Research, Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding, Regional Conflicts and Field Work, International Relations and International Law, From National to Human Security, Peace Education and Ethics, Human Rights, Gender and Democratization, Sustainable Development and its Contributions to Peace, Peace Culture: Religions and the Media, Development of Key Competencies for Peace Workers.

During the nine-month full time study period, the students will learn and work together, building a multi-cultural community. Such a unique learning situation will enable the participants to train in everyday situations what needs to be realized on a global scale: mutual understanding, tolerance, cooperation and the willingness to learn from each other.


MAS in Peace and Conflict Transformation


Description (cont.) The total workload comprises 2100 hours, equivalent to 70 credits according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). It includes lectures, seminars, exercises, group activities, excursions, self-study, library research and writing papers. Students write an MAS-thesis on a relevant topic of their choice, under the guidance of a faculty member. PhD in Public Health


Description The Foundation Swiss School of Public Health plus SSPH+ was founded on 7 July 2005 by an agreement between the Universities of Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano and Zurich. Since August 2008 the University of Neuchâtel has joined SSPH+.

Its PhD Program Public Health is a training and network programme, which organizes national doctoral and pre-doc courses, many of them offered annually with national and international experts. Students, who join the program, are financially supported by SSPH+ for their training on an individual basis.

Description The MSc in Climate Sciences is a specialised master programme and is part of the Graduate School of Climate Sciences of the University of Bern. The curriculum consists of 120 ECTS, of which 8 ECTS are compulsory courses, 52 ECTS are elective courses at the University of Bern and ETH Zurich, and 60 ECTS are reserved for the master thesis. Master of Science in Ecology and Evolution


Description As a rule admission to the Master programme in Ecology and Evolution requires a Bachelor degree in Biology. The MSc course is accorded 90 credits upon successful completion. The Master programme is jointly taught by the Institute of Ecology and Evolution and by the Institute of Plant Sciences. It is designed to provide a sound knowledge and specialisation in ecology and adjacent fields. Two thirds of the time available is devoted to the master thesis so that a strong emphasis is placed on academic research activities. At present, students can choose from four specialisations: animal ecology and conservation, behaviour, evolution, and plant ecology. The Master degree enables students to enter the labour market in various sectors or to extend their academic careers by doctoral studies.

Description The new MADE programme combines the perspectives of clinical epidemiology and genetic epidemiology into a one year, 60 ECTS Master’s programme for students who already have a Master’s degree in Medicine, Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Health Sciences and allied sciences. The second semester involves designing and implementing a research project at one of the four universities in the consortium. Each student spends time at least at two different Universities. During their research work students are offered specialised elective courses that match their research interests. These courses can be taken at any of the four campuses. Successful students are awarded with a fully recognised Joint Degree.

Admission requirements In order to qualify for the MADE programme, a prospective student should have earned a second-cycle degree (a Master of Science degree or equivalent in Medicine, Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Health Sciences or an allied discipline). The degree must have been awarded by an accredited university that is legally entitled to issue it. The prospective student should also meet a recognised level of English proficiency:

The minimum IELTS (International English Testing System) score is 6.5 (minimum score subsection: 6.0)

The minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores are 575 for the paper-based test (minimum score subsection: 57); 232 for the computer-based test (minimum score subsection: 23); and 90 for the internet-based test (minimum score subsection: 22).

Description The Bern–Fribourg Master in Earth Sciences is a joint programme run by the Universities of Bern and Fribourg. The merger of capabilities at the two Universities allows an exciting and varied curriculum to be offered in a two-year, 120 ECTS Credits degree, taught in English. Description The course for the Master of Chemistry consists of four elective modules (see below) of 15 ECTS each, and a Masters thesis of 30 ECTS.

At least three of the Master modules must be chosen from the five offered by the Chemistry department, the others can be selected from those offered at other departments (in parti-cular Physics and Mineralogy) and/or other Swiss Universities.

The five Master modules offered by the Chemistry Department, in part jointly with the neighbouring Adolphe Merkle Institute and the University of Applied Sciences, all consist of lectures and practical laboratory classes and/or project work, and they are accompanied by seminars.

Description The curriculum in Earth Sciences is co-ordinated between the universities of Bern and Fribourg (BeFri). This MSc fulfils the standards of the Swiss Association of Geologists. It guarantees the qualification required for professional geologists.

Description The MSc introduces graduates students to the physical, economic, social, technological and policy aspects of Global Change and Sustainability, focusing on the different spatio-temporal scales inherent to many of the issues encountered. The course includes a common set of lectures, practical work and projects intended to provide an appropriate interdisciplinary flavour, prior to the two main options that include: Physical aspects (including modelling and field work) and Socio-economic issues. Methodological aspects of geographic information processing and spatial analysis intend to reinforce the integration between natural and social components.

The curriculum of the MSc in geography represents a scientific course of studies, allowing specialization and focusing on « Global Change and Sustainability ». It integrates courses in both natural and social sciences. The course programme consists of the following teaching modules: A core module of 17 ECTS. A Master thesis module of 40 ECTS, comprising the Master thesis, a preliminary and

a final seminar. A specialisation module of 15 ECTS in either physical sciences or in humanities

(socio-economic module). Each of these two modules consists of compulsory courses and course options destined to bolster the specialisation.

Master of Science in Physics


Description The first year of MSc study consists primarily of courses, exercises, the weekly seminar, and a project designed to strengthen and complete the student's existing physics knowledge. The core courses consolidate the student's knowledge in two important domains (atoms and photons, condensed matter) of modern physics research. The student will also be invited to follow specialization courses in experimental or theoretical physics. The choice of available lectures varies from year to year; at Fribourg we have offered the following topics: atomic physics, optics, solid state physics, soft condensed matter physics, critical phenomena, and quantum field theory. The lectures can be followed at Fribourg, or may be partially composed of courses from other universities, or from the “Troisième Cycle” courses of the Swiss-French universities. The project, be it experimental or theoretical, consists of work performed within one of the research groups present in Fribourg. During that work, the student will become intimately familiar with the experimental and/or theoretical methods applicable to the physical problems on which the project is based.

The MSc degree course is completed by a Master thesis of 36 ECTS. That work will be research related, but of relatively modest scope, undertaken by the student with the assistance of a person having solid research experience. The work will allow the student to develop his or her taste and aptitude for research. The final report of the work will be presented both as a written scientific text and by oral examination in a form of a conference. The research groups present in Fribourg are: Atomic physics and optics, Solid state physics, Soft condensed matter physics, Theoretical condensed matter physics, and Interdisciplinary physics.

Description This Master’s degree offers a complete basic education for future actuaries. An actuary is a business professional who deals with the financial impact of risk and uncertainty.

Description The Master of Science in Behaviour, Evolution and Conservation degree is intended for students who wish to combine an advanced approach to ecology and sciences of evolution with the possibility of working with fauna and/or flora.

Description The Master’s degree in Finance is an inter-university training jointly proposed by the Universities of Neuchâtel, Geneva and Lausanne.

Program The first semester consists of four common core courses (24 ECTS credits) taught in

each of the three universities and one additional course (6 ECTS). At the beginning of the 2nd semester, students select one major (30 ECTS): financial

analysis (Neuchâtel), wealth management (Geneva) or financial engineering and risk management (Lausanne). Specialized courses (major) and electives (30 ECTS) span the 2nd and 3rd semester.

During the fourth semester students write their master thesis (30 ECTS), independently or during a training period in a financial institution or in the financial department of a corporation.

Major in financial analysis The major in financial analysis prepares students to the Chartered Financial Analyst® exams, an internationally recognised certification, which has more than 70’000 holders throughout the world and among which 1500 work in Switzerland. Description The Master's Programme in Banking and Finance (MBF) is meant to provide students with optimal qualifications for a successful career start in banks, insurance companies, asset management companies, finance-oriented consulting firms, auditing firms and other financial institutions. Description The Master of Arts Programme in International Affairs and Governance (MIA) is based on an interdisciplinary and globally oriented curriculum that provides students with an advanced general knowledge and understanding of some of the most pressing and complex issues of our time. The programme includes courses in economics, political science, business administration, and law.

The MIA curriculum integrates the diverse perspectives constitutive of economics, political science, business administration, and law. Mandatory courses provide the conceptual foundations, research methods, and indepth knowledge required for a thorough understanding of complex international affairs issues. Core electives such as specific courses, tutorials, and practical projects enable students to choose and refine their areas of specialization, developing a professional portfolio of their own. The degree program combines the study of fundamental aspects of computer systems with a hands-on approach, preparing professionals for successfully pursuing a career in research and development. Students learn how to analyse, select and evaluate computer programmes with the help of a strong theoretical background, which includes notions of computational complexity and formal methods like abstract algebra and logic. At the same time they learn to understand, design, simulate and optimise intelligent and complex systems where important competences include the capability to learn and to adapt to unpredictable and dynamic situations. Students learn how to design, test and analyse software programmes providing the required level of software quality using the appropriate software engineering methodologies. Description The goal of behavioural biology is to analyze animal and human behaviour from a biological point of view and with biological methods. This Master's degree program provides an understanding of the diversity, regulation and function of behaviour.

Empirical outdoor and laboratory studies focus on evolution biology and mechanistic questions. Behaviour-analytical, ecological, physiological, molecular-genetics, immunological and biochemical methods are used to analyze hypotheses. Master of Science UZH in Environmental Sciences

Description: The 1.5-year programme (3 terms) is structured as follows: In the first and second term the basic interdisciplinary knowledge will be obtained. In the second and third term the Master's thesis will be carried out in one of the research groups of the Institute of Environmental Sciences. During the first term the student develops and presents a personal research plan for the thesis project.

A total of 90 credit points is required for the MSc in Environmental Sciences. 30 credit points are obtained for the courses, 50 credit points for the thesis work and 10 credit points for the final exam. The courses are grouped into modules UWW 220 - UWW 290. All modules are assessed according to ECTS-standards. One credit point equals 30 hours of effective work. All courses in the Master's programme in Environmental Sciences are organised and offered by the Institute of Environmental Sciences of the University of Zurich. The thesis project must be supervised by a research group leader of the Institute but may physically be carried out at an external institution.

The courses consist of lectures, seminars, exercises, and project-oriented assignments. A mixture of assessment modes will be used, e.g. written and oral examinations, term papers, and field-exercises.



Admission requirements All students are required to have a bachelor's degree from a Swiss University or equivalent, sufficient knowledge in mathematics and physics (including statistics and methods of empirical social science research) equivalent 6 ECTS-points; biology and chemistry equivalent 6 ECTS-points and environmental sciences equivalent 8 ECTS-points. Knowledge in environmental sciences should be acquired mainly from courses in environmental sciences during bachelor education, either at the University of Zurich or at other universities. The language of instruction is English. Applicants whose mother tongue is a language other than English or who have not followed all their secondary and tertiary education in English need to submit test results of a language test such as TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). If no language certificate can be submitted, knowledge of English will be tested during the individual interviews. Students in the programme must be registered at the University of Zurich.

Master of Science UZH in Medical Biology

Description The specialised Master in Medical Biology provides a basic natural science education for individuals that have studied Medicine or Veterinary Medicine. The study provides students with a deeper scientific understanding and the capacity to carry out independent scientific work in experimental medicine and biology. The MSc program provides the students with a profound knowledge in biology and basic science and enhances their qualification to work in an academic setting at the interface of clinical and experimental medicine.

Course components (CP= ECTS Credit Points): Basic studies: Block courses and lectures accounting for a minimum of 35 CP. Master thesis: Subsequently, students conduct a practical year in a laboratory of their own

Description The cell is the fundamental unit of life where biological processes arise from complex interactions of molecules like DNA, RNA and proteins. Molecular and Cellular Biology concentrates on a molecular understanding of these processes. Central topics are the inheritence of genetic information (DNA replication, mitosis, meiosis, the control of genetic stability), gene expression including its regulation (transcription, translation, protein modification and degradation) as well as cellular metabolism and dynamics (organelle formation and function, cytoskeleton, signal transduction). The field is closely related to biochemistry, molecular genetics and developmental biology. It is crucial for an understanding of how cells differentiate into specialized cell types and respond to their environment under normal circumstances as well as in medical disease. The Master's programme in Biology with specialization in Molecular and Cellular Biology offers an in-depth academic training and confers the skills needed for independent scientific research in the field. Description The program combines high-level academic teaching and research in quantitative finance with problems taken directly out from the private banking and finance sector. A special feature of the program is the combination of lectures on financial economics with lectures on mathematical methods in finance (probability theory, statistics, numerical analysis).

The curriculum contains compulsory courses dedicated to the theory, the concepts and methods of corporate finance, financial markets, financial economics, derivatives and financial engineering, financial econometrics and mathematical methods for finance; furthermore, each participant can follow specialized courses from the areas of risk management and asset management. Finally, the required Master's thesis serves to ensure the ability of the graduates to conduct autonomous scientific work for solving a relevant problem for the finance community.
