Welcome to the Inspiring Meeting Hotels
Meetings in prime locations
Rosmarie Furer Manager at Schloss
Ueberstorf
Ms Furer, what makes the castle an Inspiring Meeting Hotel? Guests can find inspira-tion all around them: in the hotel’s architec-ture, food and garden as well as in the castle’s exciting history.
Sometimes you need a change of scenery to get inspired. The Inspiring Meeting Hotels provide an opportunity to do just that. From lakeside art deco hotel to luxurious mountain hut or former spinning mill, they are all anything but ordinary.
Schloss Ueberstorf near Fribourg is a case in point. Over the course of its more than 500year history, the building has been an aristocratic estate, a convent and an artist’s home. Today, it is a place of cultural and business exchange that continues to exude a unique historical charm.
Aside from its fantastic location, the hotel also offers a varied programme of events and activities. From nighttime hikes to golf lessons and swimming in the river – team events at Schloss Ueberstorf promote greater team spirit and also free the mind for new ideas for future success.
What can guests expect at the castle?Everything and nothing. Emptiness and freedom on the one hand, lots of inspiration on the other. As well as a lively programme of events and activities.
For example?Culture in all its forms, such as drinks receptions in our sculpture garden, dinner in a designer setting, short musical events and much else besides.
8 Inspiring Meeting Hotels.
A source of great ideas.A game of outdoor chess is just one of the many teambuilding exercises available at Kartause Ittingen.
A convivial meal of Swiss specialities in the Stübli restaurant of The Alpina Gstaad hotel is the perfect end to a productive day.
The difference between a simple meeting and an inspiring experience often lies in the detail. Every conference hotel has bright rooms and good infrastructure nowadays. But to be awarded the title “Inspiring Meeting Hotel” by an expert panel, a hotel also needs to offer a unique location, a welcoming atmosphere and a surprising programme of events and activities. Such features encourage the mind to wander and ideas to form.

Film festivals There are more than 20 film festivals in Switzerland, including in Aarau, Locarno and Zurich. Some of them are longstanding events, such as the International Film Festival in Locarno, which was founded back in 1946. The Zurich Film Festival is more recent, but no less glam-orous. It has been drawing both household names and the stars of the future to Lake Zurich since 2005.

Fondue Cheese, white wine, garlic and cornflour are the key ingredients of this typical Swiss dish. The melted cheese is kept hot over a table- top burner, and you dip cubes of bread into it. Watch out, though: if your bread cube falls off into the melted cheese, you have to buy everyone a drink. cheesesfromswitzerland.com
From another era: above the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz, the Grandhotel Giessbach exudes a sense of history.
The caring handyman
43
Ueli Zurbuchen is the Grandhotel Giessbach’s jack of all trades: he repairs anything that is broken, he looks after the expansive nature park and water-fall, and he makes sure that the hotel never loses its magic. Text: Matthias Mächler Photos: Markus Bühler
Ueli Zurbuchen: “I have more faith in my screwdriver than I do in mysticism. But this truly is something special.”
44 Inspiring Meeting Hotels. The caring handyman.
For one century, the Grandhotel was the place to
stay for the high society. By 1979, it looked ready
to shut its doors forever. But famous Swiss environmen-talist Franz Weber rescued
it in 1984, avoiding speculation by distributing
ownership among 8,000 shareholders.
220,000 square metres of forested nature park with peaceful hiking paths: once a week, Ueli Zurbuchen walks along all the official trails and checks the spring catchment, one of his “magical spots” on the Giessbach estate.
Europe’s oldest funicular railway: red funicular wagons, each with their own driver, bring passengers up to the hotel from its private pier on Lake Brienz.
45
The Giessbach Falls are 400 metres in height and drop in 14 stages. Shepherds are said to have gathered there in ancient times to celebrate solar and lunar festivals. In 1873, a family of hoteliers from Zurich, the Hausers, ordered the construc-tion of a Swiss chalet-style building.
Ueli Zurbuchen fixes loose towel racks, replaces broken keys and installs new shelves in the historical conservatory, ensuring that the Grandhotel Giessbach is always in perfect condition.
