The program is the second in the Fall President's Lec- ture Series that is free and open to the public. It begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Horton Foote Theatre in the Duson- Hanson Fine Arts Building. The evening's speaker is Marvin Marek, president of the Czech Edu- cational Society of Texas and found- ing member of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. He will present "The Influence Czechs Have Made to Texas Culture," which includes a brief over- view of the history of the Czech people, their immigration to the U.S. and their history in Texas. According to the 2000 census, Czech descents in Texas numbered 187,729. Marek feels the figures are closer to 500,000, noting that schol- ars estimate there to have been ap- proximately 200 Czech communities across the state in 1939. Large con- centrations of Czech descents still re- side in the core counties of Austin, Fayette, Lavaca, and Washington counties. A native of Lavaca County, Marek is the great-great grandson of Czech immigrants, through his mother's pa- ternal side of the family, who arrived in Fayette County from Moravia in 1855 and 1860. His maternal grand- mother settled in Lavaca County from Slovakia in 1897. Marek's paternal grandparents came to Shiner, Texas from the small village of Petrovice in East Bohemia in 1896. At age seven, Marek moved to Wharton County and worked in the cotton fields since Czech families were typically self-contained eco- nomic and social units that cultivated the land. In recent decades, Marek says land use has moved away from cotton farming into ranching and rec- reational interests. "There is still a pretty good con- centration of Czechs who farm, but it's no longer small family farms," he said. Because of the importance of mu- sic in the Czech culture, Marek will present samplings of music from dif- ferent genres. One excerpt includes the 1 \' h century hymn of St. Wenceslaus, patron saint of the Bohemian area of the Czech Republic. An avid historian, Marek has been interested in his Czech heritage most of his life. He has held offices or served on the boards of seven Czech- American organizations. The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT), which Marek heads as presi- dent, is raising funds to establish a Residency in Czech Music and Cul- ture at the University of North Texas. In 1992, it endowed the Texas Chair in Czech Studies at the University of Texas in Austin. Marek is retired from a 32-year engineering and construction career with Harris County. He and his wife, Judy, reside in Katy. The final speaker in the WCJC Fall 2004 President's Lecture Series is Holocaust survivor Celina Fein. Dur- ing her Nov. 16 lecture, she will share her unusual story of living with a Nazi Germany family during the Holocaust. For more information about the lecture series, visit www.wcjc.edu or call 979-532-6322 or 1 -800-561 -9252, ext. 6322.
