Principal’s Report I meet with our School Council president each Tuesday morning. If there is

something on your mind that needs to be addressed by the school please chat to

Andrew Wilson who will bring your thoughts to our meeting.

We hope everyone enjoyed Education Week however, we consider every week an

education week at Albert Park PS. During Education Week you received your class

teacher newsletter informing you of the events and learning in each classroom.

STOMP dancing classes concluded and I am sure the neighbours who live

behind the hall are happy that the loud music has finished however our

students are sad. This is a great program which the students really enjoy.

The program bridges outcomes for both The Arts and P.E.

Over the last two Tuesdays, Sue and I hosted most of the 2017 Prep

parents giving them an overview of the school, our values and the

programs which operate. If you know of any parents who have not

enrolled their 2017 Prep student yet, please ask them to do this now to

secure a place.

School Council met with the City of Port Phillip to discuss another option

for the Pop up Park/intersection closure. Thank you to the parents who

the school numbers were increasing. We expect to hear of a council

decision very soon. In 1971 Bridport Street was closed to the public by an

Act of Parliament and incorporated into the school grounds but the

in action. Some parents observed specialist programs and it is always

good for parents to observe their child in a different setting if the class was

timetabled for one of the four specialist programs. If you observed a

On Thursday the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) students

held an incursion in the hall for students in grades 3 to 6. The ANAM

students performed and talked about their classical instruments. Next

term we plan for our students to attend the South Melbourne Town Hall

for a lunchtime concert.

Friday was our Harmony Day when we celebrated the diversity of culture

in every classroom and amongst staff. . We held a special assembly in the

morning which everyone enjoyed. We heard from some of the teachers

about where their families originated from and the students were

fascinated by this information. Thanks to Rachel, Chris and the JSC who

organised this lovely day. Did you know that I was born in Belfast

Northern Ireland? My family left England on the day the king of England

died and Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth. This day was not

her coronation day. That celebration came later.

At the end of the week, Jane Battrick’s 40 years of teaching was

celebrated by a State Education function. Jane has an amazing range of

skills and expertise and we are blessed that she joined our staff as the

Mathematics Leading Teacher. Congratulations on this award Jane- not

too many teachers reach this milestone!

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS

"At Albert Park Primary we are

developing an understanding and

respect for the natural world

around us."

Active Travel at APPS

Our next Ride2School Day / Active

Travel Celebration is on Friday 10th

June. We are launching our Active

Paths on that day as well, so have a

look at the map (click_here ) and

choose your favourite path. There

will be special guests joining us on

the walk to school, and a delicious

breakfast will be available for

everyone on arrival. In addition, a

special morning assembly will be

held at 9am that day to celebrate

our Active Paths launch. Why not

add a touch of the colour of your

path to your uniform? Once again

there will be 'Students vs Teachers'

in the HandsUp Counts. Last time

the students were victorious, but

this time the staff are determined

to win the trophy. Good luck to

everyone and have fun!

As you may have noticed the works

at the roundabout at Nelson Rd

and Moubray St should be finished

very soon, complete with raised

zebra crossings. We would like to

thank to the City of Port Phillip for

acting on the results of our Active

Travel Survey last year which

pinpointed this roundabout as our

#2 trouble spot on the way to

school. Without your input the

zebra crossings would not have

been included in this upgrade.

hours to provide additional playground space. In 1971 Bridport Street was closed to the public by an Act of Parliament and incorporated into

eSMART at Albert Park Primary School

What is eSmart? A framework for schools to implement whole-school

culture and behaviour change relevant to the smart, safe and responsible

use of digital technologies. This eSmart framework promotes strategies

for dealing with a broad range of cyber-risks. Albert Park Primary School

maintains an eSmart program, which has been in operation since 2009, to

build our students’ capacity to make wise choices and limit irresponsible

risk-taking, as well as promoting good interpersonal relationships. As a

community, we need to embrace the positives of technology for teaching

practice and enhancing our students’ learning, as well as its role in

positive relationship building.

will be run by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation eSmart Team. The

Signs have been put up around the

school this week to mark some special

places –

This is one of them … see if you can

spot the others!

DISAPPOINTING NEWS

FROM THE GARDEN

Pilfering from our garden has

escalated and we are losing produce

every day. Parsley, sorrel and half of

our lettuce patch has been taken

during these nightly raids on the

garden.

Zlatka and the other volunteers, as

well as the students in gardening club,

work hard so that all students get to

enjoy and learn from our garden.

It is very disappointing to think that

others do not share the same respect

for our garden as we do.

If you see anyone helping themselves

to our garden you might want to

share a word of discouragement!

Mother’s Day Stall On behalf of the APPS community, we would like to thank Inge Huijpen

and Jolijn Hooke for once again organising a fabulous Mother’s Day stall.

Children were delighted to choose from the various beautiful gifts that

Inge and Jolijn handpicked for the special women in our lives.

Thanks also to their band of volunteers who helped set up the stall and

were there to assist the children with choosing the right gift for their

mums.

Help with the Fathers and Special Blokes’ Stall is needed in September so don’t

leave it up to the usual few, but put your hand up to help us with the next

stall.

OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS

TO EXPERIENCE ANOTHER

CULTURE, MAKE NEW FRIENDS

AND IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE

STUDIES AT HOME

In June and July we will be receiving

exchange students, aged between 15 –

18 years old, from Brazil, Czech

Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany,

Italy, Norway, France, Japan, Sweden,

Slovakia, the USA and the

Netherlands. Our new arrivals will live

with a host family and attend a local

school for 3, 5 or 10 months. As we

plan for their arrival, we are keen to

hear from suitable families who might

be interested to host a student.

Hosting an exchange student can be a

truly rewarding experience. It allows a

family to experience a foreign culture

first hand, be exposed to a new

language and pass on a bit of our own

culture. They might even make a friend

for life!

Student Exchange Australia New

Zealand is a not-for-profit organisation

that is registered with all state and

territory Departments of Education

around Australia and with the Ministry

of Education in NZ. We are the first

and only secondary exchange

organisation in Australia and New

Zealand to be certified to ISO 9001

(Quality Management System) and we

ensure the highest standards of care

and support to our participants. You

CABRINI EMERGENCY WORKING WITH OUR SCHOOL

Cabrini Malvern’s Emergency Department has offered pupils

from APPS a heavily discounted rate of $205 (8 am to 8 pm) and $240

(8 pm to 8 am weekdays and on weekends). We hope this discount of

50% will assist the families in this school community and enable them

to receive the best possible treatment for their children.

To obtain this discount, your child or carer will simply need to

show their current student card or supply school details when

attending the Emergency Department.

The discount of 50% applies to the attendance fee only and would

not include any further out of pocket expenses such as X-rays and

blood tests.

Cabrini has an emergency department (ED) open 24/7 staffed by

senior emergency doctors trained in paediatric medicine. They have a

dedicated paediatrics area within the ED and a children’s ward in the

unfortunate event that a child needs admission to hospital. A large

group of local paediatricians are on-call every day of the year and

they have access to a large network of paediatricians for

appointments. Cabrini has dedicated, technologically advanced

surgical theatres and paediatric surgeons on call should they be

required. They pride themselves on their caring and sensitivity to our

patients’ needs, and work to make a visit to the ED as stress-free as

possible for children and parents.
