The White RoseEach year at Yom Hashoah we commemorate the Holocaust with a remembrance of The White Rose Society. This was the name of a small group of German teenagers and their professors who fought against the Nazis. The White Rose Society pub-lished newsletters that spoke out against the Nazis and their treatment of the Jewish people. This year donations were made to the Holocaust Memorial Fund by the following people to commemorate the White Rose Society.

President’sMessageNeal Rosenbaum

As President of the United Jewish Community of the Virginia Peninsula it is my honor to represent the community on the Board of Peninsula Jewish Endowment. Bob Kessler is the Director of our Endowment. Most of you know Bob from his many years of dedicated service as Director of the United Jewish Community.

ln past years many of you have attended programs, trips, films and activities that our Endowment Fund helped to support. For instance, our Endowment provided subsidies to participate in missions to lsrael. Please consider joining our community on an upcoming community mission where scholarships may be offered.

The Endowment sends your teens to participate in Panim el Panim, a young leadership experience in Washington, D.C.

Babies to Bubbies, a family oriented program at the Living Museum was also recently funded by our Endowment.

Here’s how the Endowment grant process works. Members of our community, groups of people or even an entire synagogue come up with a unique or innovative program. Using forms supplied by the UJCVP, application is made for a grant from our Endowment. Steve Wendell, our community Executive, can guide you through the application process. Funds are not available for routine expenses such as paying a Rabbi or making a mortgage payment. However, creative thinkers may want to hold a Shabbaton; a scholar-in-residence Shabbat program where a congregation invites a noted scholar to our community for a weekend of learning and celebrating the Shabbat with services, meals and friendship.

Just suppose that the invited scholar specializes in the history of Jewish Cooking. lmagine preparing a Shabbat dinner with this scholar on Friday afternoon, using 150 year old recipes, worshipping together at Kabbalat Shabbat, followed by the dinner that congregants prepared. After dinner the Scholar discusses the techniques and recipes that our ancestors used in the Middles Ages or Lgth Century Europe. After Shabbat on Saturday evening teens and younger students can learn the fine art of challah baking, preparing the perfect Cholent or even taste testing a variety of fruit kugels. On Sunday morning your scholar-in residence discusses the historical basis and cultural rationale for families serving bagels, whitefish and lox on Sunday morning.

It’s that simple. Develop a creative, interesting and

innovative program that can form the basis for many future programs. Perhaps the scholar-in-residence weekend provides the inspiration for groups to hold a series of Shabbat dinners using the newly learned recipes. Now you have the full circle; the local Endowment provides seed money to help community members bring in a noted scholar whose teachings inspire community members to use this knowledge to replicate similar Shabbat cooking experiences in their homes with groups of friends.

Many years ago Temple Beth El brought an idea to the Endowment to assist in the establishment of a Jewish Film Festival. The Endowment helped fund the first year’s festival. Due to the tremendous success of this first year, with broad community support, including corporate sponsorships, the Beth El Film Festival has become an annual institution involving hundreds of families who anticipate viewing top notch Jewish films from all over the world. Barbara and I never miss a season. One could suggest that the seed money from the Festival germinated and sprouted a well-attended world class, annual film festival.

Don’t be shy. Come to me with your program ideas and I will do my best to work with you to help attain Endowment funding. The sky is the limit and your organization or congregation can significantly benefit. Also, feel free to contact Buddy David, Endowment chair or Bob “the Builder” Kessler, Endowment professional.

CampaignUpdateSarah Barnett

It’s Springtime! And that means a lot of things: if means that I’m happier and smile more; it means college campuses are ending their year soon, and that UJCVP Camp Chaverim is gearing up for another great season. It means that preschool is about to end but for the first time ever will keep year round doors open at our brand new Sarfan Early Childhood Center infant and toddler wing. It means that I’m genuinely worried about how I will look in my bathing suit but not worried enough that you won’t see me at the beach or the pool anyway. At the office, it means that my mid day walk can happen more frequently outside instead of in the gym and that my work on this year’s campaign is done…..well, sort of. As much as donors of any organization would love to see short durations of fundraising campaigns, I believe that no organization ever really halts the process. Public radio stations have short, concentrated fundraising drives throughout the year but never really stop looking for supporters and taking donations from listeners. My university sends me mail all year round even though I am only going to donate once a year. We are no different. For budgeting purposes the bulk of our campaign needs to be completed by now so that we can make a reasonable projection of funds available for the coming fiscal year. However, until every Jewish household on the Peninsula has made a commitment to our communal campaign we will never really abandon our quest for support. But the blooms on the trees, the sunshine, and the warmer weather do signal that time during which we evaluate the past year and start to plan the next. Approximately 180 days of Campaign 2015, 48 volunteers, 498 donors (so far), 49 brand new gifts, 3800 pieces of snail mail, , 4 staff members, and 18,252 individual email reminders, are just a smattering of the numbers that go into evaluating the 2015 UJCVP Annual Campaign. Let’s not forget the thousand thank yous that we owe all of you 498 donors! The bottom line so far is $781,000 in pledges, with approximately 40 donors from 2014 who have not yet had an opportunity to make their pledge. Think of how successful we will be when those 40 donations arrive! Or, if more than that arrive before summer because people who have not ever made a donation or who have not for a number of years decide that now is time. It is never too late to make your commitment to help fund our core activities and maintain our crucial connection to our overseas partners.

Temple Sinai Named to Virginia Historic RegisterTemple Sinai, has been added to the Virginia Historic Register. At a joint meeting of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources State Review Board and the Board of Historic Resources, the decision was made March 19 to place Temple Sinai on the Register for ethnic heritage and architectural significance. Completed in 1960 as a home for the then five-year-old congregation, Temple Sinai is the work of architect Edward Loewenstein of Greensboro, NC.

Loewenstein designed 1,600 buildings, 500 of which were residences. Temple Sinai is one of only 25 designed in a modernistic style. The building features a sloping roof, representing Noah’s Ark and a sanctuary with a soaring open space meant to illustrate the link between man and God. Over the years, Temple Sinai has added a number of other significant features including a Biblical Garden and Women of the Bible stained glass windows. Two of the Temple’s three Torah scrolls are also of historic significance. One dates from 18th

century Morocco, the other was completed in Jerusalem in 1903.Temple members June and John Mellman took charge of preparing the extensive application, compiling pictures, maps and reports as well as speaking to surviving members of the early days of the congregation. Their research included a trip to Greensboro to speak to some of Loewenstein’s surviving associates. Temple Sinai’s application will now be sent on to the National Park Service as a candidate for the National Register of Historic Places.

The Countup

Rabbi Gershon Litt

Throughout the academic year Jewish professionals on college campuses know that there are times to plan events, times to let students study, times to throw big parties, and times to leave students alone and let them acclimate to new environments. As I am writing this article we are just two weeks away from the end of the academic year at William and Mary and other schools throughout our region. Students are studying for finals, writing term papers, and frantically trying to submit their assignments for multiple classes all at the same time. If we could have a window into dorm rooms right now there would likely be a calendar on each stressed student’s refrigerator that has multiple “x” marks through each day as they count down to the end of this harsh and stressful time.

There is another counting simultaneously going on in Jew’s lives around the world. The Torah tells us that at this time of year between Pesach and Shavuos the Jewish people are to “count the omer.” The omer was a harvest offering that the Jews brought to the Temple in Jerusalem on the second day of Pesach. Additionally, there is a Torah command to count the days from that day of offering until the holiday of Shavuos 50 days later. The 49 days in between these holidays are each individually counted each day. It is brought down in Jewish mystical sources that these days, which recall the 49 days that the Jews traveled from Egyptian slavery to receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai, also each represent an aspect of our character. Each day that we count the omer it is not only a counting for the purpose of recalling a journey, but rather it is an act of character refinement and personal growth. How often do we spend a few minutes daily to reflect on various aspects of our personality and character? There are specific traits associated with specific days, but even if you are reading this and there are only a few days left it is not too late to

bring this ancient and potentially life changing mitzvah into your life.

There is one difference between the “counting down” that the students are doing right now and the counting that we do when we count the omer. When we count the days and weeks of the omer we count up. Instead of saying, “Five days left, four days left, etc.,” we count day one, then day two, day three, and so on. We do not count down, but rather we count up. We lift our sites towards the holiest and most important event in Jewish history that formed us as a nation – the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Each day we look deep into our hearts and take one step closer to our own Mount Sinai, our own personal perfection. If we take this seriously and each day take one step closer to realizing our personal potential then Shavuos will truly become an annual revelation of truth as it was for the Jewish people over 3,300 years ago. we come to dinner to eat or we eat in order to serve a Higher Purpose. When we have a chance to attend a service, a meal, a program or a class we have a choice. Attend because we feel as though we have to or try to figure out how this matzah ball can bring us a little closer to G-d. If you want to know more about the spirituality of matzah balls (or anything else) feel free to be in touch.
