John Chapter 2:3 ……….”ey have no wine.” As I was preparing for a wedding ceremony recently I found myself thanking this young couple in my thoughts for the guts to make a public commitment to love each other through the marriage vowels. In our world today the focus seems to be on other alternative rela- tionships as if it is the norm and that the mar- riage covenant is a thing of the past. I would not only challenge that, but I would like to suggest that we celebrate the beauty of a man and a woman who say yes to a lifelong loving relation- ship. Jesus must have felt it merited celebrating too as we read in the second chapter of John when Jesus, who was a guest at a marriage ceremony Minister’s Corner with his mother and his disciples, was ask by his mother to get the bride- groom out of a pinch when the wine at the cel- ebration had run out. At that time running out of wine would have been a disaster; as a matter of fact it probably would be today as well. Anyway, Jesus appar- ently hesitated initially, but must have thought that a marriage celebra- tion was indeed worthy of his support and atten- tion, so he performed one of his first public miracles by changing six large jugs of water to a top of the line wine. It may have been his way of reminding us that we too should take every opportunity to celebrate and recognize the mar- riage covenant between new and old marriages alike. We may not be able to change water to wine but, we can sure take the time to attend a wed- ding when the opportu- nity arises or send a card of congratulations and best wishes on weddings and anniversaries.
