International Service Narrative for Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise:

Thailand Global Grant: The Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise and the Rotary Club of Silom along with a

host of other clubs in D5000, Japan and Taiwan garnered over $ 212,000 as the proud sponsors of the Thai

hemodialysis machine/medical equipment global grant. The purpose of this grant is to improve and expand

low cost health care in underserved communities through the enhancement of health infrastructure. It also

provides training to local healthcare professionals and supports ongoing preventative health education. The

grant is to assist rural hospitals to become full-service treatment facilities, which can help patients remain

closer to their homes. The grant was featured in D5000 newsletter and “The Rotarian” magazine. Dr.

Eberhard Mann visited the grant project site in November 2017.

Fukushima Exchange with Visually Impaired - This is the 3rd

Annual partnership with the Rotary Club of

Atago, Tokyo to sponsor 7 visually impaired young adults and students from Japan. This event provides these

visually impaired individuals with new experiences and a renewed confidence that they wouldn’t experience

if they stayed in Japan. During the homestay, the Japanese guests experienced beach outings, camping at

Bellows, hiking, massage training at a massage school in Hawaii and a visit to Ho`opono to learn techniques

and methods of how visually impaired people in Hawaii learn to find their independence.

Cambodia Hepatitis B Immunization Campaign – The Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise continues their

efforts with our second District Grant for over $3,500 to provide Hepatitis B immunizations for the children

and staff at Future Light Orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Several members and friends of our club

have visited FLO to supervise the work and to assure that the money was spent correctly.

Sister/Friendship Club Activity - 5 members of Honolulu Sunrise attended the D2560 District Conference in

Niigata, Japan which was hosted by our friendship club the Rotary Club of Niigata Bandai. The Rotary Club

of Niigata Bandai rolled out the red carpet for the member’s visit to Niigata. The club's gracious hospitality

was overwhelming...a traditional Japanese dinner (including dazzling Geisha), lunch at a winery, tea at the

Saito Historic Residence and a tour (plus tasting) at a Sake distillery. New friends await in every corner of the

world with Rotary!

World Polio Day Social Event – Sunrisers celebrated World Polio Day on October 24th

at Bakery & Table.

Friends, visitors, and other Rotary clubs were invited. Attendees included 12 members, 7 other Rotarians

(including Present & Past District Governors), 8 Non-Rotarian Guests. The event not only provided an

opportunity to fundraise for polio but also network with other Rotarians & guests. The World Polio Social

Event was not only featured on the D5000 website but on the RI website as well.

NID participation: One RC Honolulu Sunrise member joined a NID tour in North India in March 2018.

Door to door oral polio vaccinations were offered in Amritsar; Polio projects were visited in New Delhi – at

Stephan Hospital and Kusumpur Pohari. In Jaipur we were able to visit a not-for-profit foot factory which

offers lower leg prostheses and is ready to test new hand prostheses.

Supporting Future Light Orphanage – Honolulu Sunrise and its members have proudly supported Future

Light Orphanage in Cambodia for a number of years. This December Sunrisers donated almost $500 to ensure

the children didn’t go without for the holidays.

Sunset Rotarians donated books that were delivered to the Philippines for several schools that needed books

to furnish libraries.

Former Ambassadorial Scholar sponsored by our club, is now a Peace Corp member in a remote place in

the Philiipines. During her short break from the Peace Corp, she cme to our club meeting and shared how

Rotary helped her to "give back to the community." She teaches in a remote town in the Philippines and with

her own expenses, introduces various cultural experiences to the children. She started a library for the school

where she teaches. Sunset members provided support to fund that library.

International Service Narrative for Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset

Our club’s International Service Program had another exciting and rewarding year. We continued our

common focus to engage Rotarians across the globe, challenging them to improve the lives of those living in

different corners of the world, while fostering continuing partnerships to ensure sustainability of new and

ongoing programs.

Global Grant- Our club initiated and participated in one new global grant this Rotary year. GG1419174:

Improving Access to Safe Water and WASH Education in Lahan and Siraha District (Nepal). Co-sponsored

with RC of New Road City (Kathmandu, Nepal), the budget of $61,000 will be used to reduce morbidity and

mortality from water-borne illnesses and unsanitary hygiene practices in the urban and rural communities of

Lahan Municipality and rural Siraha District by (1) installing durable high-quality water filtration systems at

four schools (two urban, two rural), and (2) creating awareness and education programs to improve WASH

practices at the schools and community at large. To ensure maximum effectiveness and sustainability, this

project has been built upon partnerships with the Nepal-based water filtration company Lucen Drop Nepal and

volunteers from the Hawaii-based NGOs Aloha Medical Mission and Water Hands Hope.

Fellowship- Our club hosted visiting Rotarians from several countries. Members of our club, likewise,

visited many foreign clubs again this year. Rotarians from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Japan, and

Europe visit our club on an annual basis. One of our most treasured associations is with the Langley Ukelele

Ensemble from British Columbia, Canada. In tradition, our club hosted their annual performance and

provided transportation for sightseeing and another performance at the Sheraton Waikiki.

International Project/Visit/Sister Club- Our club was involved in a unique opportunity with Little Dresses

for Africa and the RC of Mount Hagen (Papua New Guinea) to bring over fifty dresses and shorts, sewn by

members of our club from donated materials and fabric, to girls and boys living in the rural highlands of

Papua New Guinea. During their visit in September, our members James Ham and Constance Williams were

able to deliver the dresses and shorts to children at a local orphanage and the pediatrics wards of two

hospitals. James and Constance also met with RC of Mount Hagen President Matthew Galman to discuss

future projects, and on 9/19/18 they served as guests of honor for the grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony

of the women’s community toilet/WASH center built from funds from global grant GG1419174. From this

visit, our club was able to create an official Sister Club Relationship with the RC of Mount Hagen.
