I spoke about how we needed to know the Scriptures, to study our faith; to really know what the Church teaches and that the excuse that we were not taught "this stuff" when we were young was no longer an excuse. The information about our faith is readily available to everyone through books and online via the Internet. In the first reading last week, St. Peter reminds the leaders that the reason they killed Jesus was out of ignorance and in the Gospel, Jesus proved to the followers that the resurrection was real by eating fish in front of them. Our belief in God is not based on superstition, but it is based on truth that can be known and explained through intellectual exploration. To diminish the seriousness of faith in a series of pious sayings or to simply pass it off by saying that you just have to believe, is to toss aside the ability of the human person to ponder the infinite reality of truth. The Parishes of

MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia

The Lord is Risen. He is truly risen, Alleluia! Last week in my homily, I spoke about the need to deepen our intellectual knowledge if we sought to deepen our faith. As Catholics, we do not fear truth nor should we shy away from questions about our faith. The teachings of the Church are based on Scripture and Tradition and on centuries of theological and philosophical reflection. We do not hide behind biblical fundamentalism which crumbles under simple scrutiny, but place before the world in clear and definitive documented statements our faith. At no point is our faith tradition based upon an "opinion" of one person, but upon the foundation of a proclaimed and provable truth.

The reason people leave the Church is because they do not understand the actual teachings of the Church. They walk away because they fail to distinguish the actions of one person from the truth entrusted to the Church by Christ Jesus. When people say that all religions are the same, they display their full lack of understanding. That would be the same as saying a rusted out little car is the same as a Ferrari. great worth that is unrivaled by any religious or non-

religious tradition or institution. If the Church were opposed to intellectual pursuit of truth, why would we have the Vatican Library and the thousands of institutes of higher learning around the world? If you have a question, the Church has an answer, and it is not afraid to tell you what and why we believe what we believe. So, the next time you hear something about what the Church believes (not some scandal caused by one person), look it up on an official website or proper book before you just accept it as truth. Have a great week. PS: See you at the next Bible Study. Did you know:

If you are interested in your family being a part of St. Augustine School, your first year tuition is deeply discounted? Did you know that in subsequent years if you are an active and participating member at St. Augustine Church and you fill out an AOD grant form, you can receive extra help through our scholarship fund? Did you know that if you are an active and participating member of Holy Family Church and you fill out the AOD grant form, you are eligible for additional help from the parish? In other words, if the only reason you have not enrolled at the school is because of money, you may not have known all the facts and options available to you. Enrollment for all grades for next year is already open. Spaces are limited and you don't want to be left out. Call the school for more information. Upcoming blessings:

We will be having a couple of special events coming up next week. We will be blessing all RV"s and campers in the parking lot at Holy Family. You are most welcome to invite others who are not part of the parish to come and join us for a fun event when we will ask God to protect your travels and grant you a restful time on

MALLIA’S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 vacations. We will also be asking a special blessing through the intercession of St. Joseph and St. Isadore the farmer on all our farmers at the masses next weekend. Please feel free to invite your neighbors to mass even if they are not Catholic as we enter into what we hope will be a productive planting season (if the weather will ever cooperate). The purpose of blessing items and people is to be mindful of the presence of God in our daily lives and activities. It is not a "lucky charm" kind of thing, but a realization that it is in and through the providence of God we do all that we do each day. The blessing points to the holiness of God and our need for God in our lives. Calling all young adults ages 18-35

We are moving forward with the co-ed kickball league! Please keep looking for more information about sign up. You do not have to have a team of your own; we are happy to put people together. Anyone in that age group is welcome to participate even if they are not Catholic and have no athletic ability. This is about having fun, meeting other people your age and having a couple of laughs playing a game we used to play in grade school. Let the games begin! Parish Festival Time

The time is quickly approaching for the Parish Celebration at Holy Family and the St. Augustine Festival. Sign up sheets for volunteers will be going up and we need lots of help to make it a fun time for everyone. Also, the planning meeting for Holy Family is next Tuesday. Everyone who is in charge of an aspect of the weekend is really needed at the meeting. Please plan on attending. We want to make sure we have all things covered and so if you said you would help, please be at our next meeting. Thank you. Have a great week and God bless.

Spring Clean for Unused and Expired Medications

Saturday, April 28, 2018, is National

Drug-Take Back Day.

Do your part in the war against drug

abuse. In preparation for this day,

please begin Spring cleaning. First

look in your medicine cabinet for any

unused or expired medications.

Also look at the expiration date on

bottles such as Tylenol, Aspirin,

Cough syrup, etc. Next look in your

closet or anywhere else you put

medications. Last look in the kitchen

cupboard for vitamins or supplements,

that you bought at the grocery or

health food store, that you no longer

use, and/or have expired. Please

bring all of them to a local Take-Back

event or to the Police Station nearest

you ASAP. Check www.dea.gov for

the sites closest to you.

St. Augustine Parish Council Are You Being Called?

Are you being called? That is the question I need to ask you, my fellow parishioners regarding our parish council. We are again in need of some new parish council members, and on Pentecost Sunday, May 20th, is the day Father will draw the names for the new members. I have asked this question before and I hate to say, but the response has been, well, underwhelming.

I ask myself why this is, and the only reason I can come up with is that we really don't/can't stop from the busy-ness of our everyday lives and sit with God in the quiet of our hearts, and listen to Him. I truly, truly believe, that if we did this, not only would we have a basket full of parish council nominees, but every ministry in our parish would be overflowing with new members filled with joy and enthusiasm!

So I'm asking you this, in the next week, you need to go to your quiet place, whether that be this church, your bedroom, or your backyard, and sit in the quiet of your heart, and reflect on this question. As you sit there in the quiet, and you feel something, anything, tugging at your heart, your conscience, I can assure you that it is the work of the Holy Spirit calling you to serve.

The ball is now in your court, as you decide with your own free will, to either act on this calling and put your trust in God, or simply try and justify in your heart and mind, that I know better, and this is not for me.

Thank you in advance for taking the time and considering God's calling. God's peace, love, and mercy, which knows no bounds, be always with you!

Intentions

Children’s Liturgy of the Word We are seeking more leaders for Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW).

Leaders proclaim the readings and gospel, lead the children in singing a Psalm response, share the main message, and conclude with a simplified creed and intercessory prayers before rejoining Mass. A detailed leader guide is provided. CLOW is offered at the 9:00am Mass at St. Augustine and the 10:30am Mass at Holy Family. If you are interested in joining this ministry or have questions, please contact Susan Finley in the Faith Formation Office of either parish.

I realize that there was an error in a file used to generate the information needed when I prepared the letters and envelopes for the 2018 Raffle Tickets. As a result, if you turned your tickets in

during the festival last year, you may not have received a ticket packet this year. I apologize and want to make it clear that your tickets went into the barrel and the money was deposited in the church festival account. I just did not pull that info into preparing this year’s list of names when issuing tickets. If you did not received tickets and are willing to sell some, please contact Sue Ann Wessel at 586-246-

4718 or call the office and I will get a set to you. Again, I am sorry for the mistake and any confusion or inconvenience this has caused.

THANK YOU

We would like to thank all the people

involved in the prayer blanket ministry

for the beautiful quilt. Your thoughtfulness in assembling all these

quilts / afghans for the sick is so much

appreciated, beyond words can say.

Annette Pfeifer was so kind to chose a

quilt for my husband. When I brought

it home and gave it to him, he had tears in his eyes and put it right on his bed.

We cannot thank you enough for your

generosity.

May God bless you all!

A Game of Chess

Each week students gather in room 203 to play the game of chess. They are so excited to come. I see the younger students in the hall all week and they ask is there chess this week? The students cannot wait to come. Is it the game they are excited for? No, it is about spending time with their friends. They play chess, eat snacks, and quietly talk to one another. What a great day that is!

Each week we have that same invitation. Come spend time with me. Come talk, share in the meal, and be with family. How many of you take the time to answer that invitation? God wants us to be a part of your life. Do you allow Him to spend time with you in prayer, at church, or even in your daily life?

I know the students who come to chess have changed since the beginning of school. They have grown in the knowledge of the game. They have strengthened their friendships with each other. The students have learned that it is okay to lose and how to gracefully win. They are saddened when the time is up to leave.

One hour a week with God can make all the difference in your life. Are you willing to take that chance? Are you willing to feel the love God has for you? Each week the doors are open for you to enter. Will you take that first step? We meet each week at 8:00am on Wednesday in the church and on the weekends. We hope you will join us.

Blessings, Michele Grifka 5th grade teacher

St. Augustine Parish Council Corner for April

With the permission of Fr. Joe and the other members of the Parish Council, I am writing today about something most dear to my heart for the entirety of my life: the Right to Life movement, especially in our local area. I am sure that it is also an especially important issue to our clergy, young couples, parents and grandparents. To begin, I recently had the Holy Spirit provided opportunity of joining the Blue Water (St. Clair County) Right to Life group, something I had been fumblingly and unsuccessfully trying to do for several years. I was graciously welcomed to my first meeting in February: they normally meet on the first Tuesday evening at 7pm in the upstairs meeting room of the St. Clair County Library in Port Huron. The majority of the members are devout Catholics and are very open to new members.

I am sure there is an RTL chapter in Macomb County and I suspect what I will say about the St. Clair County group is true of them also. The BWRTL charges a mere $15 for a yearly membership, most of which goes to fund the publication of their newsletter, their annual bus trip to the Right to Life March in Washington, D.C., their local support for anti-abortion activities, their interviews of local and state candidates for public office (determining their position on Right to Life), and their strong support for the Blue Water Pregnancy Care Center, which St. Augustine and Holy Family are both “connected with,” according to Fr. Joe and the Parish Office. BWRTL is a member of Michigan Right to Life and, in addition to its monthly meetings and pro-life activities, hosts fundraisers and an annual banquet to support its efforts, as well as the Blue Water Pregnancy Care Center.

It is to the latter that I would like to address much of the rest of my comments. Because God saw fit to move me in the right direction at the right time to locate BWRTL, I had the blessed opportunity to be invited to one of the BWPCC's major fundraisers, its annual banquet at a local golf course. The meal itself was surprisingly good (having had to attend many of these sorts of functions in my academic career, I assure you the food is rarely as good), but the evening's presentations were absolutely amazing. First there was a video/oral presentation of the work of BWPCC. Just a few quick examples: they have an actual medical clinic with a doctor available to pregnant women (unlike the tax-

supported Planned Parenthood, which actually provides almost no services to pregnant women except abortions). BWPCC provides pregnancy tests and ultrasound exams, and the statistics show that 78% of women who undergo such exams do NOT have an abortion; they provide counseling for both men and women, much of it Christian, and in fact, make numerous conversions every year; they provide free baby supplies, prenatal education, nursing

consultations, adoption resources, and a host of other benefits to pregnant women who might easily have chosen to have an abortion. The wonderful news is that they saved 401 babies in St. Clair County this past year and helped many new parents.

But I would be remiss if I didn't mention the other features of the banquet, which had nearly 500 attendees or more, many of whom I knew from my academic career at SC4. They are all good people willing to donate for this wonderful cause, which, if I have the correct figure, earned $36,000 for this wonderful but not inexpensive cause (“a worker is worthy of his wage”). But best of all was a gentleman by the name of Mike Spencer, a former pastor of a church in Indiana, who provided the finest pro-life/anti-abortion speech I have ever heard, and I have written a few of my own, heard many and read many brilliant such arguments from professionals and my own students over the years. It was literally spell-binding: factual, logical and powerfully emotive. It movingly and accurately answered the abortionist arguments, point by point. He pointed out that there are about 2,600 abortions a day, that abortion dehumanizes us, and that it has made “the womb a bloody battlefield.” To say nothing of it being a mortal sin, the massacre of an innocent child...and our future.

I wish I had the time and space to say more about these two organizations, but I don't, and so I strongly encourage everyone at St. Augustine and Holy Family who loves babies, children, and the God-given gift of life itself to seriously consider joining and supporting Blue Water Right to Life and to financially support or volunteer to help at BWPCC (www.bluewaterbabies.org or 810-985-4673). They will shortly have another major fundraiser, and I assure you every contribution goes to the saving and nurturing of God's most helpless gift to humanity, our unborn babies. If you would like more information, feel free to contact me before or after the 6:00pm Mass.

Finally, this is likely my last “column” for the Parish Bulletin since my three terms as a Parish Council Member have, sadly for me, come to an end. (And, yes, I do believe in term limits!) I would like to profoundly thank the two Fr. Joe's I've had the good fortune to “work under”, my wonderful colleagues on the Council who have made my life more joyful and meaningful, to all my fellow parishioners for your kindness, and to all of you who have told me how much you enjoyed the columns. God bless you all. You are indeed a wonderful and welcoming parish doing the work of God. And I encourage many of you to listen carefully for the whisper of the Holy Spirit and follow His subtle suggestion to submit your name to be a Parish Council member. It is a worthy work and you will never regret listening to His Word.

In Christ, Tom Obee, Parish Council member until June

Feast of Corpus Christi “Walk with Jesus”

June 3, 2018

Looking for a fun and faith-filled place for your children or grandchildren to spend a week

or two this summer? Want to help them unplug from technology and not even miss it?

Look no further! Camp Sancta Maria (CSM), located in Gaylord, Michigan, provides

wholesome recreation and adventure in an atmosphere of Christian faith. CSM is a

Catholic camp offering one- and two-week sessions for boys and one-week sessions for

girls. Since 1933, CSM has provided countless youth with lasting memories. Activities

include daily Mass and evening prayer, horseback riding, swimming, a high- and low-

challenge ropes course, a fifty-foot climbing wall, crafts, archery, various sports, a trip to Mackinac Island,

campfires (and s’mores!) and so much more!!! Fun, faith, and friendships included at no extra cost! Check out

our website to learn more at www.CampSanctaMaria.org or call (248) 822-8199.

Join us as we process Jesus through the community for the 13th year. The procession can

be joined anywhere along the route, which is directly North on M19 from St. Augus"ne to

Holy Family. If you are unable to walk, there is a hay wagon at the end of the procession

you can ride. The procession makes two brief stops in route where there are portable

bathrooms and an opportunity to rehydrate and get a quick rest.
