Analysis of Vacation Scholarships
March 2019 deadline
1. Submissions and review process
1.1. Summary data
251 applications were received
7 applications were withdrawn
224 were sent for assessment by peer reviewers in the Scottish universities
121 awards were made, 33 of which were in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences and 88 in Science, Engineering and Technology – 11 awards have since been declined by the students
The total amount awarded was £264,500 with the average value of an award being £2,186
The scheme experienced an almost 60% increase in applications as a consequence of the expansion of the applicant eligibility criteria arising from the amendment of the Trust’s Royal Charter
It should also be noted that this is also the first round of the scheme in which students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and The Glasgow School of Art have been eligible to apply
1.2. Peer review process
In total, 109 Carnegie Reviewers contributed to the review process, 38 from the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and 71 from Science, Engineering, and Technology.
Assessors were asked to review proposals against the following criteria:
Candidate fit
Academic ability
Significance and originality
Overall quality
A Selection Committee was formed to consider the short-listed proposals and the Reviewers’ comments. The
Committee consisted of members of the Trust: Professor Andy Walker, Dr Patricia Krus and Dr John Thompson.
