SAMPLE Page 1 of 3 BIO 111 Course Syllabus Fall 2017 Anatomy and Physiology I - Lecture Time: Monday & Wednesday 11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Instructor: Dr. Rachel Simons, PhD Office: 223 Science Building E-mail: [email protected] Hours: Monday, Wednesday 2 – 3 pm, or by appointment Recommended text: Visual anatomy & physiology 2 nd edition by Martini, Ober, Nath, Bartholomew. Or, use any current Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook. Course Description: Anatomy and Physiology I is the first semester of a two-semester sequence in human anatomy and physiology. Anatomy is the study of the form of the body and physiology is the study of body function. The course will begin with an introduction to terminology as well as fundamental principles of cellular function. The course will include examination of anatomy and physiology at the cellular, tissue, organ, and organ systems. Topics will include skeletal, muscle, and nervous systems. Course Objectives: 1. To form a foundation in Anatomy and Physiology that will provide a base of understanding for future courses you may take. For example, in order to understand how the body is altered in disease, you must understand the normal anatomy and physiology. 2. To explore the form and function of the cell in sufficient detail, to understand basic mechanisms and malfunctions at the cellular level. 3. To acquire specific knowledge of several body systems. 4. To develop skills that will enable students to explain, diagram, and teach basic anatomy and physiology of several body systems. Lectures: Regular attendance is expected. It is your responsibility to obtain information from all lecture classes. Lectures will introduce key concepts and fundamental principles. The majority of exam material will come from lectures but additional material from the textbook and homework assignments (that may not be covered in class) will also be included in the exams. Grading and Evaluation: 1. Exams will comprise 80% of the lecture grade. There will be 4 exams, approximately 1 hour in length. The exams will cover the material presented since the last examination. In other words, the examinations are not cumulative. This includes the final examination. No make ups will be given without a very good excuse. If you miss an exam or anticipate missing an exam, contact me within 24 hours of the exam for consideration of a make-up exam. 100 points each; 4 exams = 400 points 2. Drawings and diagrams will comprise 10% of the grade. See blackboard for details of the drawing assignments. There will be 4 drawing “sets” – each set is associated with an exam. Each set includes three or four drawings (or tables). The set must be handed in on or before the exam. Each set is worth about 12-14 points; 4 sets = 50 points. This is equivalent to ½ of an exam score. Consider that these drawing sets are equivalent to a mini take-home exam. Copyright 2018 Rachel Simons
