Time: Monday&Wednesday11:45a.m.–1:00p.m.Instructor:Dr.RachelSimons,PhDOffice:223ScienceBuildingE-mail:[email protected]:Monday,Wednesday2–3pm,orbyappointmentRecommendedtext:Visualanatomy&physiology2ndeditionbyMartini,Ober,Nath,Bartholomew.Or,useanycurrentHumanAnatomy&Physiologytextbook.CourseDescription:AnatomyandPhysiologyIisthefirstsemesterofatwo-semestersequenceinhumananatomyandphysiology.Anatomyisthestudyoftheformofthebodyandphysiologyisthestudyofbodyfunction.Thecoursewillbeginwithanintroductiontoterminologyaswellasfundamentalprinciplesofcellularfunction.Thecoursewillincludeexaminationofanatomyandphysiologyatthecellular,tissue,organ,andorgansystems.Topicswillincludeskeletal,muscle,andnervoussystems.CourseObjectives:

1. ToformafoundationinAnatomyandPhysiologythatwillprovideabaseofunderstandingforfuturecoursesyoumaytake.Forexample,inordertounderstandhowthebodyisalteredindisease,youmustunderstandthenormalanatomyandphysiology.

2. Toexploretheformandfunctionofthecellinsufficientdetail,tounderstandbasicmechanismsandmalfunctionsatthecellularlevel.

3. Toacquirespecificknowledgeofseveralbodysystems.4. Todevelopskillsthatwillenablestudentstoexplain,diagram,andteachbasic

anatomyandphysiologyofseveralbodysystems.Lectures:Regularattendanceisexpected.Itisyourresponsibilitytoobtaininformationfromalllectureclasses.Lectureswillintroducekeyconceptsandfundamentalprinciples.Themajorityofexammaterialwillcomefromlecturesbutadditionalmaterialfromthetextbookandhomeworkassignments(thatmaynotbecoveredinclass)willalsobeincludedintheexams.GradingandEvaluation:

1. Examswillcomprise80%ofthelecturegrade.Therewillbe4exams,approximately1hourinlength.Theexamswillcoverthematerialpresentedsincethelastexamination.Inotherwords,theexaminationsarenotcumulative.Thisincludesthefinalexamination.Nomakeupswillbegivenwithoutaverygoodexcuse.Ifyoumissanexamoranticipatemissinganexam,contactmewithin24hoursoftheexamforconsiderationofamake-upexam.100pointseach;4exams=400points

2. Drawingsanddiagramswillcomprise10%ofthegrade.Seeblackboardfor

detailsofthedrawingassignments.Therewillbe4drawing“sets”–eachsetisassociatedwithanexam.Eachsetincludesthreeorfourdrawings(ortables).Thesetmustbehandedinonorbeforetheexam.Eachsetisworthabout12-14points;4sets=50points.Thisisequivalentto½ofanexamscore.Considerthatthesedrawingsetsareequivalenttoaminitake-homeexam.

3. Quizzeswillcomprise10%ofthegrade.Weeklyquizzeswillbepostedonblackboardandyouwillcompletethequizzesonline.Inaddition,theremaybeapracticequizatthebeginningofclass.Thequizwillcoverthematerialpresentedinthepreviousclassorclasses.Therewillbe10quizzesworth5pointseach.

4. StudyquestionswillbepostedonBlackboard.Studyquestionsarenotgradedbut

answeringthesequestionsprovidesanopportunitytoassessyourownunderstandingofeachtopic.Completetheappropriateworkbeforethestartofthenextweek.Writecareful,preciseanswers.Usecorrectspellingandgrammar.Organizeyourideas.Compareyouranswerswithanswerkeyspostedonline.

understandingaparticularconceptandyouwillbedoingothersafavorbyaskingaquestionaboutit.

5. Ifyouarestrugglingtounderstandthematerial,askforhelp.6. Createavocabularylog–listtermsfromlectures,andhomeworkquestions;learn
