Watch the video above about making a time capsule to explain the concept of a time capsule to your child. Explain that during this week we are going to make our own time

capsule that we can bury at home but also add some information to a whole school time capsule that we will bury at school. We will be working on pieces to add to our time capsule

through both our writing and topic tasks.

Today we are going to be completing a page all about

ourselves to give some information about who we are and

what we like for the person who digs up the time capsule in

the future.

Have a look at the page below and discuss each statement

with your child. Can you extend these to become a sentence

where possible e.g. instead of writing that your favourite TV

show is Numberblocks write ‘My favourite TV show is

Numberblocks because I like finding out about numbers and

the songs help me to learn.’ Maybe all of your family could

complete a sheet too.

(Discuss the need for finger spaces between each word and encourage cursive handwriting.

Encourage children to use their Fred Fingers to segment words and accept phonetical spellings using

the sounds that the children have already learnt. Can children remember how to write key red words

such as I, the and said? Extension- can children punctuate their writing with a capital letter and full

stop correctly?)

Mathematics task- Monday Learning Point: To solve problems

Explain that this week, we are going to be putting some of the children’s

mathematical knowledge to the test by solving a range of problems. We

will need to think of solutions to our problems and make sure that they

are mathematically accurate.

Read your child the letter from Bob the Builder (below) explaining that his

cement hose was dragged through a rose bush and now it has lots of

holes in so water keeps spraying out. Explain that he needs the children’s

help to find a new hose or means of moving cement from one place to

another so that he can build walls. Ask children to discuss what they think

they could do to move cement from the mixer to where the building site

is. Can they record their ideas in a method of their choosing?

Explain that today, the children can use any resources that is available to

them to solve the problem. The mathematical concepts they will need to

consider are:

- How long the hose is

- Whether the cement will travel down the hose or if they need to

change the height the hose is at

- If they choose another method of moving the water, will Bob be

strong enough to move the cement?

- Will their solution have a big enough capacity to ensure there is

enough cement at the other end?

Dear children, My cement hose has been dragged through a rose bush and the thorns have made lots of holes in the pipe. Now I can’t get the cement to where it needs to be properly because it keeps spraying out of the holes. Can you help me to fix it or to find a different way to get the cement from the lorry to the building site? Thank you for your help. Bob the Builder

Can you write the sound in the cursive style?

Can you write some of the green words from Monday’s

phonics lesson in the cursive style?

(Please note- tell children the number of Fred fingers for each word by counting the sound

buttons underneath each word. Both lines and dots represent a single sound)

Can you write the following phrase?

“Will the goat float in a boat?”

(Please note- tell children the phrase and get them to repeat multiple times. Model writing the phrase sounding out each word as writing it then hide this before children write the phrase. Discuss the need for finger spaces between each word and encourage cursive handwriting.)

Remind children of what a time capsule is. Why do we make these?

Explain that today we are going to be adding another page to our

time capsule to discuss life during the coronavirus lockdown.

Today we are going to be focusing on how we are feeling to

capture this moment in time for our memories and to inform

the people of the future.

Have a look at the page below and discuss each statement

with your child. Can you extend their ideas to make full

sentences? E.g. If your child writes ‘I feel happy’ extend this

to say ‘I feel happy because I get to spend lots of time with

my family and go for long walks in the fresh air.’ Maybe your

family could create one of these pages too to record their

feelings.

(Discuss the need for finger spaces between each word and encourage cursive handwriting.

Encourage children to use their Fred Fingers to segment words and accept phonetical spellings using

the sounds that the children have already learnt. Can children remember how to write key red words

Read children the Three Billy Goats Gruff or watch a video of the story here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QzT1sq6kCY . Show children a picture of a

bridge over a river.

Explain that a big storm has come and has washed the bridge away- show children a

picture of a broken bridge.

Explain that the Billy Goats are stuck on one side of the bridge and need to get to the

other side before they run out of food and drink. How can we help to get them to the

other side of the river? Encourage a discussion of your child’s ideas.

*You could have sheets of blue paper or trays of water to represent the river during

the session*

Explain that your child can use any resources available to solve this problem.

Mathematical concepts to consider:

- Is your solution long enough to cross the river?

- Is your solutions strong enough to hold the weight of the goats walking across

it?

What items would your child want to find in a time capsule if they

dug one up? How would it help them to find out about the past?

Today we are going to add a page to our time capsule that will

give people of the future a great insight into what life is like during

2020 and lockdown due to COVID-19 by writing a diary of our day.

Does your child know what a diary is? Have a look at the

powerpoint on tapestry explaining what a diary is and how to

write a diary entry. Ask your child to recall either the events of a

previous day or to make notes during their day to write their diary

entry later. Remind them that it is important to record as many of

the facts as they can in as much detail as they can remember in

the order that they happened. E.g. First I got out of bed and saw

the beautiful bright sun outside. Then I had some delicious, juicy

strawberry jam on toast for breakfast. After breakfast it was time

for learning but I do my learning at home now. I sat down at the

table, got out my learning pack and a sharp pencil and started my

lessons for the day.

(Discuss the need for finger spaces between each word and encourage cursive handwriting. Encourage

children to use their Fred Fingers to segment words and accept phonetical spellings using the sounds that

Show children an episode of Super Ted.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDVwFNVDsPQ

Explain that Super Ted has got a new pet puppy but when he came

back from his latest mission his puppy had chewed up his cape and

now he is worried he might fall when he tries to fly next.

Super Ted would like us to make him a parachute so that he can stay

safe when he is flying and keep saving others.

What could we use to make a parachute? What are the key features

a parachute needs? Discuss this with your child and feedback their

ideas.

Explain that during the session, the children can use any resources

that are available to make their parachute.

Mathematical concepts to consider:

- Is the parachute big enough in comparison to Super Ted?

- Is the material strong enough to support the weight of Super

Ted?

- Is the string on the parachute the correct length to make the

parachute work?

- How high do you need to be to test that your parachute works?

Writing task- Thursday

Explain that as well as making a time capsule of their life during

lockdown, we are also making a time capsule as a whole school and

would like to include a letter from as many of the children in the

school as we can to the people of the future who will open it.

Over the next two days we will compose and write a letter about our

lives and our learning during lockdown. Today we are going to focus

on writing about how we communicate with other people and how we

learn and will include how we feel about each of these things.

Make a mind map for each of these topics (see video on Tapestry) to

record all your child’s ideas about how we do these things and how

they feel about this. Then take each idea and extend this into a

sentence e.g. if your child said ‘We speak to our family and friends on

the phone’ extend this to say ‘We speak to our family and friends on

the phone. We get to see their faces when we call them which I love

and means we get to pull funny faces. We can’t get too close to each

other yet to keep everyone safe. I miss giving my Nan a hug but I can’t

wait to do this again when it is safe. I think it will be the best hug

ever.’

You can use the rainbow page to write your letter on.

If you would like your finished letter to be included in the school time

capsule, please drop it off in the marked box outside of school.

(Discuss the need for finger spaces between each word and encourage cursive handwriting. Encourage

children to use their Fred Fingers to segment words and accept phonetical spellings using the sounds that

the children have already learnt. Can children remember how to write key red words such as I, the and said?

Explain to your child that since they’ve been away from school, Fred

has been getting into mischief and now he has got himself stuck on

the top of the projector in Butterfly class. (You could set up a

scenario with one of your child’s favourite toy stuck up somewhere

high in your home.)

How are we going to get Fred down? Discuss and record your child’s

ideas.

Explain that your child can use any resource available to find a

solution to get Fred down.

Mathematical concepts to consider:

- How high up is Fred? How long does our solution have to be to

reach him?

- Is our solution strong enough to reach and rescue Fred?

- Does our own height influence our solution?

How would your child feel if they opened a time capsule?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p07b8l0n Have a look at this clip

about a Victorian time capsule being dug up. Can you add any extra words

now to describe how it would feel to dig up a time capsule?

Today we are going to finish writing our letter to a person of the future to

add to our own or the school time capsule. Today we are going to focus on

writing about how we do our shopping and what we do for entertainment

and will include how we feel about these in our writing too. We will also

talk about our hopes for the future either in a wider perspective or

personally.

Make mind maps for each of the topics above and record all the ideas the

children have about these. Then extend each one into a sentence to add to

their letter. E.g. If they wrote ‘When we go to the shops we have to stay 2

metres apart’ extend this to be ‘When we go to the shops we have to stay

2 metres apart to stay safe. There are markings on the floor to help to tell

us where to stand so that we don’t get too close to people. Some people

wear gloves and facemasks to keep themselves safe when they leave their

homes. This stops them touching or breathing in the germs.’

You can continue writing on the rainbow paper you started writing on

yesterday but I have attached another page in case you need more space.

Remember, if you would like this to be included in our whole school time

capsule, please leave it in the marked box at the front of school.

(Discuss the need for finger spaces between each word and encourage cursive handwriting. Encourage children to use

their Fred Fingers to segment words and accept phonetical spellings using the sounds that the children have already

learnt. Can children remember how to write key red words such as I, the and said? Extension- can children punctuate

Learning point: To solve problems.

Explain that as a weekend treat in the sunshine (it is sunny when

Miss Cottle is writing this at least!) your favourite toy wants to go

camping in the garden for the night.

Ask your child to pick their favourite toy that wants to go camping.

How can we design a tent for them to stay in overnight to keep safe

and dry? What do we need to consider? Materials used, size of the

tent, shape of the tent etc.

Ask your child to discuss how to make a tent suitable for their

favourite toy and discuss any issues that arise during their thinking.

Explain that they can use any resource available to design and build

their tent.

Mathematical concepts to consider:

- Is the size of tent correct according to the size of your toy?

- Is the shape of your tent sufficient to fit your toy in and to

prevent it being exposed to the weather?

- Is your tent strong enough to withstand any weather?

activities you might want to

do…… - The Gruffalo woods have had a sudden snowstorm and

all of the animals have been frozen inside their houses (if you could freeze a logpile house or similar this would be great as an inspiration). How can we free the animals from their homes?

- How can you move a heavy object from one side of the room to another? How many different ideas can you come up with?

- Can you get a paper clip out of a glass of water without touching the water?

- Can you complete a range of jigsaw puzzles either on your own or with a member of your family?

- Can you play a game of Guess Who? Can you use some good questions to help you to work out who your opponent has as their person?

- Can you share some food equally between different people or toys at a real or imaginary picnic? Is the amount of food that each person/toy have fair?

Topic PSHCE This week we are asking you to take a moment to talk about equality and race. Some children may be aware of the protests or have heard the phrase #blacklivesmatter, other children will be going into these discussions with very little knowledge. In school, we hold regular circle times where children are given the opportunity to ask questions about matters such as these. The link below will provide you with ideas for discussing this topic with your children. It also offers some other helpful resources such as books and films to help open the conversation and explain different view-points. https://yoopies-cms.cdn.prismic.io/yoopies-cms/a79829ee-9d85-465c-9a08-270c4fd7e5b5_Parent%27s+guide+to+black+lives+matter.pdf We have also provided an activity for your child to participate in at home to further support their understanding of this important topic. Have a look at the picture above. Can you discuss with a member of your family how these children look? What is similar about them? What is different about them? Some people might treat some of the children differently because of the colour of their skin. This is called racism. Do you think this is ok? Why not? Elmer looks different to all the other elephants but they still want to be his friend because he is unique and special to them. Can you colour in your own Elmer and write down all the things that make you unique and special? Would a different coloured Elmer be any less special?

Topic Understanding the world:

- Can you take some photos of your life right now to add

to your time capsule? Let your child have a camera and

ask them to take photos of anything that is important to

them during life in lockdown. You can generate some

interesting discussions about what is important to them

using their photos.

-

- Can you write down, draw or record in another way

some special memories you have created during

lockdown or some celebrations you have managed to

have during lockdown to add to your time capsule? You

could think about how these have been different to how

you might have celebrated before coronavirus.

arts and design task)

- A note or letter from each member of your household

- Photos you have taken of life in lockdown (see above)

- A packet of seed from 2020- will they grow when they

are dug up?

- Your time capsule letter

- A painted pebble (see expressive arts and design task)

- A letter from your grandparents or another relative

- A current magazine

- Handprints for you and your family (see expressive arts

and design task)

We have been sent a recommended book list for Early Years

children who may be struggling with certain emotional

aspects of the coronavirus. If you feel any of these could be

useful for your child then you could look into buying these or

finding them online to help to support them.
