Scarf Project
You will need:• 3/8 yard of 60” wide fabric. Please note you may make your scarf narrower, but need to insert the window vertically and reduce the width of the side strips as above. If your fabric is 54”-56” wide your scarf will be slightly shorter. Many fabric types can be used for your scarf such as: Silk, Taffeta, Satin Back Crepe, or Velvet. (Choose the color of your choice)
• Optional beaded trim to embellish bottom of scarf
for Tulle Flowers and Butterfl ies
• Two completed tulle beaded windows. See general instuctions to make your beaded windows.
Page 13
Insert InstructionsDecide if you want to insert the fi nished windows horizontally or vertically. The vertical insert will result in a slightly shorter scarf. Follow vertical or horizontal instructions for cutting & assembly below. Butterfl y design must be horizontal.
Horizontal Insert InstructionsCUTTING INSTRUCTIONS
Cut two 5” x13½” wide pieces from each of the selvage ends
ASSEMBLY DIRECTIONS
1. Trim stitched window tulle to outer basting on the long sides and to ¼” beyond the outer basting on the short ends.
2. Double fold in the tulle and top stitch ¼” out from the inner basting stitch on the short sides or just fold over 1/2” once and top stitch ¼” from edge. (tulle will not ravel). Carefully trim raw edges close to stitching.
3. The above should measure 6 1/4” across from side to side
4. Remove short side basting stitches, making sure you don’t get the thread “stuck” inside the seam.
5. Go to page 14 for scarf fi nal assembly.
Example of Horizontal Insert<----------
Page 14
CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS
Cut two 4”x13½” wide pieces from each of the selvage ends
Cut two 3”x13½” pieces for the side panels
Vertical Insert Instructions
ASSEMBLY DIRECTIONS1. Trim stitched window tulle to outer basting stitch.
2. Fold and cut each side panels in half to make four pieces, then press a scant ¼” over on one raw edge to the wrong side of the fabric on each piece.
3. Seam the raw edge of the side piece to the long side of the tulle with a scant ¼” seam hitting the end stitching of the pockets. Trim tulle back to ¼” and fold seam away from the tulle into the fabric.
4. Fold over to other side and top stitch close to folded edge. This should measure 6 1/4” across.
5. Repeat above for the second side.
(Note: the word “scant” is used because if you make generous ¼” seams you will end up smaller than the 6 1/4” desired width of the insert with the two side panels attached)
- Put beaded window aside for the moment. –
6. Go to page 14 for scarf fi nal assembly.
Example of Vertical Insert<----------
Page 15
Scarf Assembly DirectionsStep 1: Fold and Stitch Seam
Fold scarf in half lengthwise right sides together. Determine seam allowance ¼” to ¾” by placing the window on the ends so that there will be an exact fi t. Seam long sides from end to center, leaving a space for turning. Scarf should measure approx. 6 1/4” wide after the seam is stitched.
Step 2: Sew in Beaded Windows
Be precise and stitch with straight seams! Slip each window “up and in between” right sides of the open ends of the scarf and seam together with a 5/8” seam. For the horizontal insert, this should be ¼” out from the inner basting and cover the end stitching of the pockets. Before stitching push away any beads that might be in the way of the presser foot. Turn right side out to check stitching, then back and clip corners of seams. Turn scarf and both ends to right sides and press seam toward the center of the scarf. Also press long side seams and fold in opening raw edges and press.
Step 3: Seam Short Sides
Fold and press under ¼” on one long side of each of the end pieces. Seam the short sides together making the seam allowance the exact fi t of the bottom of the beaded window.
Step 4: Sew Ends of Pockets
Slip the end piece right sides together over the beaded window, with the raw edges down and seam together with a 5/8” seam. (This should be ¼” out from the inner basting and cover the ends of the pockets for the horizontal insert.)
Step 5: Remove Basting Stitches
Trim corners of the seam and pull down to right side. Press and remove all visible basting stitches. The beads will shift as you desire.
Step 7: Final Top Stitch
Slip stitch or top stitch the scarf opening together and the bottom edges together with or without beaded trim. Enjoy your unusual, gorgeous scarf !
Page 16
General Instructions for Beaded Hearts Design
1. Stitch design and basting borders as digitized. Trim jumpers in the hearts area, but leave in between the openings on top of the hearts.
2. Inserting Beads- Insert the tube of matching beads into the openings in the basting stitch and spill a small amount of beads in. Then work the beads into the heart opening and fi ll to capacity. A tube of beads will fi ll six hearts. (The cube bead is too big to go into the hearts.) Bead Tip: Always put cap back on the tube between use. Keep fl at on your work area as you fi ll the hearts.
3. When heart is “stuffed”, close the small opening with the same embroidery thread by hand. Backstitch closed fi rst, then use a whip stitch or outline stitch over it and secure with a tiny knot in the center top or bottom of the heart. Do not remove basting stitches yet!
4. Trim tulle as described in the project of your choice.
You will need:
• 1-2 yards of tulle in the color of your choice. Dark works the best as a contrast to the embroidery and the beads. Tulle can be purchased at any fabric store and is reasonable in cost.
• Varigated thread to match beads enclosed in this kit. (See thread sheet).
• Viking “Hoop Ease” or equivalent
Three Hearts General Instructions
&Additional Beaded Window Projects
Page 17
Three Heart Scarf ProjectYou will need:• 3/8 yard of 60” wide fabric. If your fabric is 54”-56” wide your scarf will be slightly shorter. Many fabric types can be used for your scarf such as: Silk, Taffeta, Satin Back Crepe, or Velvet. (Choose the color of your choice)
• Two completed tulle beaded windows. See general instuctions to make your beaded windows.
• Optional beaded trim to embellish bottom of scarf.
Three Hearts Embroidered Scarf Instructions1. Trim design to 1/2” beyond the basting stitch on the short sides and 1 1/4” beyond on the long sides. Double fold over 1/4” on the short sides or just fold over the 1/2” and top stitch 1/4” out from basting line, trimming the raw edges. (tulle will not ravel and it helps to press the tulle over)
2. The fi nished insert should measure 3 1/2” high x 6 1/4” across from side to side.
3. Cut two 5 x 13 1/2” wide pieces from each of the selvage ends of the fabric.
4. Go to page 4 of the Scarf Project instructions.
Bride’s T-Shirt Cut-Out1. Fold over ¼” from basting line and press down. Trim tulle to the basting line.
2. Pin down on garment and top stitch down 1/8” from folded edge.
3. Turn over and cut out fabric behind the tulle.
4. Top stitch around the design again 1/8” from the fi rst, catching in the raw edge of the T-shirt fabric.
Page 18
Beaded Window Purse Project
You will need: • 1/4 yd. of 45” fabric OR ½ yd. of 36” fabric
• 1 piece of felt or interfacing 6”x 7”
• One completed beaded window
Cut: 1 piece 7” x 40” OR 2 pieces 7” x 20” for purse(one can be lining)
1 piece 2 ½” x 22 ½” for decorative bow
Assembly:
1. Cut 4 ¾” off one end of fabric. Place wrong side of beaded window on the right side of this piece. Trim and center tulle window and machine baste all around the four sides.
2. Press, then seam back onto the end with right sides together with a ¼” seam, making sure the hearts are in the right direction!
3. Press seam up away from the beaded window.
4. Fold the 7” x 40” in half short sides together OR trim from the uncut end to make the two pieces even.
5. Place the felt/interfacing on the opposite end from the beaded window and pin together all four sides. Seam together with a ¼” seam, leaving a space for turning near the felt end.
6. Trim felt and corners, and turn to right side and remove all visible basting stitches carefully. ( don’t let a thread get “stuck” under the tulle).
7. Press around all four sides. Fold opposite plain end up 7”, pin and top-stitch on both sides.
8. Fold bow fabric in half and stitch with a 1/8” seam. Turn. Fashion bow by tying or folding over a separate piece for the knot. Add beaded trim for sparkle!
Page 19
Beaded Window Shawl(horizontal inset)
Purchase a 1/2 yd. of 60” wide fabric
(if the fabric is 54” to 55” your SHAWL will be that much shorter)
Cut :
1 piece 18”x 48” for the long shawl
2 pieces 18” x 4” from the selvage ends
1 piece 18” x 3” cut into four for side pieces
Continue by following the scarf directions for the vertical inset even though this is placed horizontally, it needs the side strips to make it wide enough for the 8” wide fi nished shawl.
Pockets and Cuffs
The 4”x8” Tulle Flowers were attached to the jeans bottoms, and the shirt sleeves. The square butterfl y and fl owers designs were attached to the jean pockets. Vertical hearts were added to the side splits of the capri pants. All were folded over and top stitched down, and were machine washed and dried on gentle cycle .
Lamp Shade
Use the 4”x 8” tulle fl owers either vertically or horizontally stitched together to fi t your special lampshade project. Glue on to a solid color surface.
