The Cultural Village Foundation-Katara launched the ‘Katara Prize for Prophet’s Poets’ yesterday at the Drama

Theatre. The prize launched under the slogan

“Best poems in praise of the Prophet’ in a ceremony attended by a number of officials including Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, Dr Ghaith bin Mubarak Ali Omran Al Kuwari, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of Katara, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, Dr Yusuf Al Qaradawi, Dr Abdurrahman Al Ashmawi, Dr Ali Al Qara Daghi,

Radisson Blu Hotel on Saturday.Doha College Principal Mark Leppard

said the Awards brought together sec-ondary students, parents, staff and members of the College’s Board of Governors to celebrate the end of the academic year.

“This annual Award Ceremony is designed to acknowledge and reward our highest achieving students for their academic successes and their charita-ble achievements throughout the year,” Mr Leppard said.

“The student winners are recom-mended by teachers and compete against all other students within their subject and year groups so the winners really are the best in class,” he said.

There are five different award categories: • Outstanding Student Award • Walton Community Award• Subject Awards (there are 17 categories, one for each subject)• Form Tutor Awards• Model United Nation Colours. The top prizes—Outstanding Student and Walton Community awards—were announced on the night.

The 2015 Outstanding Student Award was presented to Ayah Mekhaimar, Year 13, for excellence in a range of subjects.

Leppard said Ayah achieved full marks in six of her examination papers and achieved the highest mark in Biology for the Cambridge Examination Board in Qatar.

“Her average score across her exam-inations was over 95 percent and she has been accepted to Kings College to pursue her ambitions in medicine,” he said.

“Ayah truly is an outstanding student, a great role model for everyone to fol-low and she should be very proud of everything she has achieved.”

commitment to the community. Rebecca was nominated for her work

as a volunteer at the Run the World Festival in Doha in December last year. She was named one of the most active volunteers by her department manager and has taken part in numerous cul-tural activities, such as the Youth’s Got Talent competition and the Al Jazeera Kids Channel’s Siwar Choir.

Students from Years 7 to 13 were presented Subject Awards for academic success in their specific subjects.

Thirty Form Tutor Awards were pre-sented (18 to Key Stage 3 and 12 to Key Stage 4) for their commitment to extra-curricular activities, leadership qualities and exemplary behaviour that brought credit to their Tutor Group, Doha College and the wider community.

Leppard said the ceremony was also an opportunity to acknowledge students who take part in the College’s success-ful Model United Nations (DCMUN).

“Principal Colours and Full Colours were awarded to students who have given exceptional service to DCMUN,” eppard said.

“These 10 students are consid-ered as role models for the DCMUN

FOOD

BY ELLIE KRIEGER

Ihad always thought of hummus as a healthful but simple dip, eaten as an appetizer or snack or in a pita sandwich — until my Middle East friends turned me on to the glories of the hummus plate.

They spread a generous amount of the creamy puree on a dish, then top it with any number of satis-fying things: sliced hard-cooked egg, chickpeas or fava beans, chopped herbs, pine nuts, seasoned ground beef or sauteed mushrooms and onions, plus a finish-ing drizzle of good olive oil.

Served as a main course with warm pita alongside, hummus becomes the base for a variety of inspiring and easy meals. The accompanying recipe is a nod to the ever-so-common hummus and baby-cut carrots, prepared and plated so it makes for an extraordinary lunch or dinner. The carrots are roasted whole, with a hint of cumin, salt and pepper, until they are firm-tender and browned. That simple step concentrates

their flavour and makes them meaty. Then they are placed, either hot or at room tem-

perature (so you can make them ahead if you’d like), atop a landscape of homemade hummus. You can use store-bought if you prefer, but it is astoundingly easy to make your own, and it is well worth the small effort for the fresh, ultra-creamy flavor and texture of it.

A finishing garnish with some of the carrot greens adds an intense carrot flavor and welcoming color to the dish. A sprinkle of toasted sunflower seeds pro-vides crunchy contrast. The result is a hummus-carrot combo that is more luxurious and fulfilling than you ever imagined the duo could be.

Hummus Plate With Cumin-Roasted Carrots

Feel free to use a good-quality store-bought

chickpea-tahini spread to make the dish even easier.MAKE AHEAD: The carrots and homemade hum-

mus can be refrigerated, separately, in airtight contain-ers for up to 3 days.

INGREDIENTS (4 SERVINGS)For the carrotsTwo 1-pound bunches of small carrots, greens

attached1 tablespoon olive oil1/2 teaspoon ground cumin1/4 teaspoon salt1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice4 teaspoons toasted sunflower seeds2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil

For the hummus1 small clove garlic, minced1/2 teaspoon saltOne 15-ounce can no-salt-added chickpeas,

drained and rinsed2 tablespoons tahini1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil1/8 teaspoon ground cumin3 tablespoons water

METHOD:For the carrots: Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.Cut the greens off the carrots, leaving about 1 inch

of stem attached. Reserve about 1/4 cup of the greens; wash and/or coarsely chop them to use as a garnish.

Peel the carrots; cut any large ones in half length-wise. Place the carrots on a baking sheet. Drizzle with the olive oil; sprinkle with cumin, salt and pepper; then toss to coat evenly. Roast until tender-firm and a little shiny, about 20 minutes. (For more of a roasted look, allow 10 to 20 more minutes’ oven time.) Let the car-rots cool slightly, then drizzle them with the lemon juice.

Meanwhile, make the hummus: Use the flat side of a chef’s knife to repeatedly mash together the garlic and salt, forming a coarse paste. Transfer it to a food processor; add the chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, extra-virgin olive oil, cumin and water; puree until smooth.

To serve, smear each of 4 serving plates with hum-mus (a heaping 1/3 cup on each). Arrange the roasted carrots on top; they may be served warm or at room temperature. Sprinkle with sunflower seeds, then driz-zle each portion with 1/2 teaspoon of the extra-virgin olive oil. Garnish with the reserved greens.

09HEALTH & FITNESS

When it comes to health of your heart, a bad night’s sleep could be as bad as smoking. Researchers

have found that sleep disturbances may double the risk of heart attack and stroke in men. “Sleep is not a trivial issue. In our study it was associated with double the risk of a heart attack and up to four times the risk of stroke,” said professor Valery Gafarov of the World Health Organisation (WHO). “Poor sleep should be considered a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease along with smoking, lack of exercise and poor diet. Guidelines should add sleep as a risk factor to recommendations for pre-venting cardiovascular disease.”

The research was part of the WHO programme “MONICA” (multinational monitoring of trends and determinants

in cardiovascular disease) and the “MONICA-psychosocial” sub study.

The study included a representative sample of 657 men aged 25 to 64 years with no history of heart attack, stroke or diabetes in Novosibirsk, Russia.

Sleep quality was assessed when the study began in 1994. Cases of myocar-dial infarction and stroke were recorded over the next 14 years. During the study period, nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of participants who had a heart attack also had a sleeping disorder. Men with a sleeping disorder had a risk of myocar-dial infarction that was two to 2.6 times higher and a stroke risk that was 1.5 to four times higher than those without a sleeping disorder between five and 14 years of follow up. The findings were presented at EuroHeartCare 2015 held in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Aerobic exercise may help curb the severity of asthma symptoms and improve quality of life, says a

new research. While people with asthma often avoid exercise for fear of trigger-ing symptoms, new research suggests that aerobic exercise should be routinely added to the drug treatment of moder-ate to severe asthma.

“These results suggest that adding exercise as an adjunct therapy to phar-macological treatment could improve the main features of asthma,” said the authors of the study published online in the journal Thorax. Celso Carvalho from University of Sao Paulo, Brazil and col-leagues compared the impact of aerobic training and breathing exercises on the severity of symptoms in 58 people with moderate to severe asthma.

All the participants, who were aged between 20 and 59, were randomly assigned to either a 30-minute yoga breathing exercise twice a week for 12 weeks, or the breathing exercise plus a 35-minute indoor treadmill session twice weekly for three months. Their bronchial

hyperresponsiveness, or BHR for short, was tested at the beginning and end of the three month monitoring period. BHR indicates the speed of airway con-striction and inflammation, a hallmark of asthma.

Levels of proteins (cytokines) gener-ated during the inflammatory response were also assessed before and after the trial. And they filled in a validated quality of life questionnaire for asthma.

Forty-three people (21 in the breath-ing group and 22 in the breathing plus aerobic exercise group) completed the study. At the end of the study, BHR had fallen in those in the aerobic exercise group. But BHR did not change in those just given the breathing exercises. Levels of some cytokines also fell significantly among those in the aerobic exercise group, while the number of symptom free days increased. And bouts of wors-ening symptoms were fewer than in the breathing group. Quality of life score rose significantly in 15 people in the aerobic exercise group, while maximum oxygen intake and aerobic power increased.

Asurvey found 40 percent of elderly people who live at home and are on medication take more

than six kinds of medication, which might lead to deteriorating health.

About 30 percent of them were also found to be taking drugs that might cause harmful side effects, according to the survey by the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology.

As elderly people often develop several chronic diseases, they tend to take various types of drugs. However, experts warn that too many drugs could lead to side effects because the body’s ability to absorb medicine declines as people get older. Taking six or more kinds of drugs is said to increase the risk of deteriorating health, such as a tendency to fall down easily due to the interactions of the different drugs.

The survey results were presented at a conference of the Japan Geriatrics Society which started Friday and closed Sunday.

In the survey, nurses and others visited about 1,300 people 65 or older who were living at home in Tokyo in November and December 2013. Among them, 885 cases in

which the details of medication had been confirmed were analyzed.

The survey indicated that 36 percent of them took six or more types of medication, and 9 percent took 10 kinds or more. One of them took as many as 17 varieties of medication.

Using a simple test to check memory and other abilities, 11 percent of those surveyed were diagnosed with cognitive function disorder. Among those who took six or more types of medication, the figure rose to as high as 18 percent.

Twenty-eight percent took one or more kinds of medicine that are not recommended for the elderly under U.S. guidelines. Many of them took sleeping pills said to lower mobility functions that could make it easier for them to fall.

Elderly people “tend to take more and more medication because they visit several different medical institutions,” said Hirotoshi Niikawa, a researcher of the institute who compiled the survey. “Drugs are necessary in some cases, but an increase of unnecessary medication could cause poor health. I want both doctors and patients to be careful.”

Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock said she enjoyed playing evil in a debut appear-ance as a villain in the ani-

mated film Minions. The movie, a spin-off of the Despicable

Me franchise, focuses on the small yel-low minions before they met Gru in the original film.

Here the minions find themselves at a loss after accidentally killing off their evil masters. Three of them, Kevin, Bob and Stuart, eventually set out on a journey that will see them recruited by the villain-ous Scarlet Overkill, voiced by Bullock, who has her eye on Britain’s crown jewels.

“It’s fantastic because she’s justified, she’s misunderstood,” Bullock said on the yellow carpet at the film’s world pre-miere in London on Thursday.

“She’s an 8-year old little girl who’s throwing temper tantrums because she wants what she wants. But it was really fun to play” the Academy Award winner said. Despite her long career, the Gravityand Speed star said she found it difficult to maintain energy levels when locked alone in a sound booth.

“It’s hard because I like having other actors to play off of or other minions to play off of and I didn’t have that,” she said.

“So you really discover a lot of what you don’t know, you really rely on the director and the whole team that’s behind that sort of glass partition to help guide you.”

The 50-year old said Minions may be her last voice role.

“It was so hard and I don’t think it’s my forte,” she said. “I don’t think I’m as good at it as other people are. And if it worked out, great, I think this might be the last time.” Reuters

Rihanna dating Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema

Singer Rihanna is reportedly dating Real Madrid footballer Karim Benzema.

The 27-year-old pop star, who has previously dated Chris Brown and rap-

per Drake, was spotted enjoying a cosy meal with the football ace at the Giorgio Baldi restaurant in Santa Monica here on Saturday evening, reports dailymail.co.uk.

The two have been spotted together on numer-ous occasions over the last few weeks, including when they attended a club here on Thursday and when they were seen leaving a New York restaurant at 6am before boarding a flight across the country.

Rihanna and Benzema were first linked together in June 2014, around the time of the soccer World Cup in Brazil, where the 27-year-old sportsman represented France.

At the time, Rihanna tweeted her support for Benzema, writing: “@Benzema I feel your pain right now!” To that, the footballer replied: “@rihanna No pain no gain, thanks for the support.”

Lady Gaga to wear simple dress on wedding

Singer Lady Gaga and actor Taylor Kinney are planning a “traditional” wedding, and the bride will wear a “simple and elegant” dress.

Gaga is known for her outlandish sense of style and unusual outfits, but when she marries Kinney, she is going for a low-key look to prove she is taking her big day “seriously”, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“She’s taking this step seriously and will marry Taylor as Stefani (her real name), not Gaga,” Heat magazine quoted a source as saying.

“Stefani is much more low-key than Gaga. She’s commissioned her Haus of Gaga team to design the dress, but it’s very simple and elegant,” the source added.

The couple are planning a very “traditional” wed-ding celebration, with the reception taking place at the bride’s father’s New York restaurant Joanne Trattoria.

The duo, who got engaged on Valentine’s Day after four years of dating, are likely to wed later this summer.

McKellen portrays elderly Sherlock in Mr Holmes

Sherlock Holmes hits British cinemas this week but not quite as many might imag-ine the legendary sleuth.

Lord of the Rings and X-Men star Ian McKellen portrays him as an elderly beekeeper, who at 93 has long retired from solving cases.

Living in an isolated Sussex farmhouse with his housekeeper Mrs Munro (Laura Linney) and her young son Roger (Milo Parker), he is unable to let go of his past as he tries to solve the case that ultimately led to his retirement.

McKellan, 76, said audiences would enjoy his Holmes more than the many others in recent years, including younger versions played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr, in televi-sion and film.

“This Holmes ... is 93 years old when we first meet him at the end of a long life, of retirement and he’s trying to solve his last mystery, the one that he didn’t quite complete when he was in his heyday,” he said at the film’s premiere. Agencies

Kangana Ranaut, who has emerged as the Queen of female-ori-ented movies, is now

set to impress the audience with her modern-day free-spirited bohe-mian avatar in Katti Batti. Having unveiled the film’s trailer, the actress managed to keep the mystery alive about its narrative and her character.

The trailer of the movie, which also stars Imran Khan, was unveiled here on Sunday.

Talking about the film, Kangana said: “It is a love story, which might not end up like a love story! The way this film unfolds... it is non-linear... it is really hard to give you an idea of what’s it’s actually about, especially my character in the film.”

Katti Batti will see Imran essaying a young architect Madhav Kabra and Kangana as the free-spirited Payal.

Dropping more hints about the film, Kangana said: “It’s not about pregnancy... I don’t play a double role, I don’t play a Punjabi girl, I don’t play an NRI, nor do I get bored in the film... so no such things. There is no genre to the movie. The beauty of the film is that it is very intriguing. Revealing too much right now will take away fun and we really don’t want to take that away.”

The film is directed by Nikhil Advani and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur under UTV Motion Pictures. The film is set to release on September 18. IANS

Actor Ajay Devgn, who visited Bulgaria to check out locations for his upcoming directorial Shivaay, will lend support to promote tour-

ism in the country from India.Ajay will take part in local activities and

shoot a promotional video for the purpose. It will be shown in India. “The Bulgarian Tourism Ministry has been really supportive to me and my team. To show our apprecia-tion, I will be lending a helping hand to pro-mote Bulgarian tourism. It’s a great initiative,” Ajay said in a statement.

Ajay and his team had discovered the country to be the most apt locale for the shooting of Shivaay, and on Monday, he tweeted that the recce of the film was done.

“Hearing that you all loved the trailer of @DrishyamTheFilm. We got Done with @ShivaayTheFilm recce, now off to London for a vacation. (sic),” he wrote.

Along with directing it, Ajay is playing the lead in the film as well. Sayesha Saigal, grand niece of legendary actor Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu will be seen making her debut with Shivaay. Meanwhile, superstar Shah Rukh Khan is in Bulgaria to shoot Dilwale.

Role in ‘Brothers’ was challenging: Jacqueline

Actress Jacqueline Fernandez, who will be seen in Karan Malhotra’s directorial Brothers, says that her role as a young mother in the film was “challenging”.

“The role was challenging for me, because I am not a mother. And it wasn’t really an ordinary situation, or an ordinary family, it was a lot more dramatic,” says Jacqueline.

“It is a young mother’s struggle with her husband and daughter. And I am grateful to Karan, because I was really thrown to deep ends with this role” she further added.

In the movie, Jacqueline’s daughter suffers from “kidney failure” and her husband, Akshay Kumar, takes on a fight challenge to win prize money in order to get her better treatment. “Whatever I have learnt from this movie, has helped me immensely as an actor”, says the Roy actress. The Dharma Productions’ film is an official Hindi adaptation of the Hollywood film “Warrior” and tells the story of two estranged brothers. The film also stars Siddharth Malhotra and Jackie Shroff.

Produced by Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar and Endemol India, the film is presented by Fox Star India, in association with Dharma Productions, Lionsgate, Endemol India. Heavy on action, the movie will hit the theatres on August 14.

Neither is Preity Zinta throwing tantrums on the Nach Baliye 7, nor is she leaving the dance

reality show’s judges panel, says pro-ducer Ekta Kapoor.

Kapoor has denied rumours that there are plans of replacing Preity as a judge of the Star Plus show.

“Preity has been our choice for the show right from the start and news about her leaving the show is absolutely

rubbish. These are complete rumours and have no truth.

“We have a judging panel with varied views, but that’s exactly what brings dif-ferent lens towards a relationship. Preity had informed us about her absence during one episode of the shoot on account of her grandmother’s sur-gery well in advance so that we could plan the shoot with Remo (D’Souza),” Kapoor said in a statement.

Slamming the Soldier actress’ erratic behaviour, Kapoor said: “It’s completely untrue and anyone in the ‘Nach Baliye’ family will vouch for the same. Our judges panel is very much on board till the finale and there is no trouble in this paradise.” Featuring celebrity contest-ants in a slightly changed format, the reality show also has author Chetan Bhagat and choreographer Marzi Pestonji as judges. How to play Kakuro:The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can

be of any size. It has rows and columns,

and dark cells like in a crossword. And,

just like in a crossword, some of the

dark cells will contain numbers. Some

cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers

reference clues. In a kakuro, the

numbers are all you get! They denote

the total of the digits in the row or

column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called

a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may

be used but, like sudoku, each number

may only

be used

once.
