Packaging of finished products has to be done uninterrupted. Firstly the goods have to be timely delivered and reached to scheduled destinations. Thirdly if the goods remain unpacked because the packaging products have not arrived then space will be taken up and in today’s world that is a big problem. Goods will keep piling up upsetting all schedules hampering business. So the packers have to be reliable.

The packaging has to be tailor-made. There is no one silver bullet for all types of packaging. For instance medicines have to be packed in strips or phials. These have to be again put into cartons. The cartons have to be of one size so that space is not wasted on the transport vehicle and one fits into the other like a hand inside a glove. There are separate containers for liquid stuff. The list is endless.

The boxes carry legends describing the items packed. This can be used to advertise the products combining business with aesthetics. This has made packaging not only an industry but also an art as well. The packaging materials are of various types. There are moving house boxes, double wall boxes, corrugated paper rolls, plastic carrier bags – all being available online. Packaging has been with Man since the dawn of civilization. Vegetation, animal skins and clay was used for packing till the other day. It was the Great wars that changed the shape of things – packaging became an industry responding to World War I and World War II. Mankind has not been spared disasters since then and packaging has had to respond to it like all other fields. Following the March 2011 tsunami and earthquake in Japan, packaging took another turn. Beer flavoured with coffee made its debut but instead of packing these in new bottles, stickers shaped like coffee banes were fixed to the existing bottles of the brewers. Packaging is coming up with unique ideas. Medicines are packaged with designs showing symptoms and laser tattoos are featured instead of stickers.

The developing world suffers largely because of the lack of packaging. Lack of packaging continues to cause 50% resource loss. The invention of glass about 12,000 years ago in the Far East brought about a revolution in packaging. Wooden barrels were used in Europe in the middle ages. The real change came with the industrial revolution when en mass production of items started and these had to be properly stored. In 1810 the can was invented in France and the cardboard panel debuted in America during the closing years of the 19th century. From the 40s of the 20th century began packaging of frozen food. Aseptic carton are now able to store milk. There is hardly any industry today that can move without the help of packaging.
