Behind the wheel of a car, most of us work hard to avoid getting into an accident. But in the Pacific

Coast Dream Machines Show’s newest event –– the inaugural Dream Machines Championship Demolition Derby to be held on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m. –– crashing and destruction is the point. In fact, the bigger, the badder, the better.

"I'm putting on over 40 Demolition Derby events across the state this year," says Demolition Derby organizer Fran Holland of Holland Racing Promotions, who, with her late husband, has been participating in, as well as organizing derbies for over four decades. A self-described tomboy, Holland says demolition derbies –– think of ancient gladiators, but with cars –– attract fans and contestants from all walks of life.

"There's definitely a stereotype," she acknowledges, "but like most stereotypes, you shouldn't make assumptions. I've had drivers of every kind, from mechanics and car buffs, to lawyers and judges. And you might think it's really a guy's event, but we get women drivers, too."

The history of the demolition derby is unclear. Some suggest it has been a crowd pleaser at county fairs and other rural events as far back as The Great Depression. But all agree that demolition derbies really took hold of the public's imagination in the 1950s and '60s.

The sport gained even more notoriety in the 1970s, mostly thanks to the popular ABC show, Happy Days. It was there that handsome biker-with-a-heart-of-gold, Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli, fell in love with Pinky Tuscadero, a beauty who made a beastly living as a professional demolition derby driver.

The optimal vehicle for destruction is one of the massive sedans or station wagons American car makers were known for in the '60s and '70s. Drivers find these vehicles of yesteryear through private sellers or at junkyards, and pay an average of $500 or less. The cars are then stripped of all interior fixtures, trim, plastic, lights, and glass. After some safety modifications, they are then often spray painted, usually in garish colors designed to make the car stand out in the crowd--and capture the fans' attention.

One item guaranteed to also capture some attention at the Demolition Derby –– the first in Pacific Coast Dream Machines Shows’ twenty two year history –– is the prize winning purse.

"There's a $5000 purse," says Holland, "with $3000 going to the lucky winner. It's going to a great event, and we're even expecting to see some locals in the event."

Organized in heats and scored on the quality of each hit, drivers stand to gain a lot for competing with a car that is basically worthless in any other market.

Holland Racing Promotions officials encourage plenty of ramming and crashing. “The drivers who do not “mix it up”, that linger in the background and do little hitting, will not be scored. Aircraft display coordinator Eddie Andreini Jr. is excited to bring “Mustang Madness”, a spectacular

array of P-51s to this year’s Pacific Coast Dream Machines, April 28-29 at Half Moon Bay Airport.

“We’ll have more P-51 Mustangs on display than you see at Mustang-specific shows,” says Andreini, son of legendary aerobatics pilot Eddie Andreini of Half Moon Bay.

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II, the Korean War and several other conflicts.

During World War II, Mustang pilots claimed 4,950 enemy aircraft shot down, second only to the Grumman F6F Hellcat among Allied aircraft.

The Mustang used a common, reliable engine and had internal space for a huge fuel load. With external fuel tanks, it could accompany the bombers all the way to Germany and back.

Enough P-51s became available to the 8th and 9th Air Forces in the winter of 1943–44.

When the Pointblank offensive resumed in early 1944, matters changed dramatically. The P-51 proved perfect for escorting bombers all the way to the deepest targets.

The Eighth Air Force began to switch its fighter groups to the Mustang, first exchanging arriving P-47 groups for those of the 9th Air Force using P-51s, then gradually converting its Thunderbolt and Lightning groups.

The defense was initially layered, using the shorter range P-38s and P-47s to escort

the bombers during the initial stages of the raid and then handing over to the P-51 when they turned for home. By the end of 1944, 14 of its 15 groups flew the Mustang.

In early 1944, General James Doolittle told his fighters to stop flying in formation with the bombers and instead attack the Luftwaffe wherever it could be found.

The Mustang groups were sent in before the bombers and could hunt the German fighters while they were forming up.

The results were astonishing; in a short period of just over a week, the Luftwaffe lost 17% of its fighter pilots.

As Doolittle later noted, “Adolf Galland said that the day we took our fighters off the bombers and put them against the German fighters, that is, went from defensive to offensive, Germany lost the air war.”

Despite the advent of jet fighters, the Mustang remained in service with some air forces until the early 1980s. After World War II and the Korean War, many Mustangs were converted for civilian use, especially air racing.

The P-51 Mustang was America’s premier fighter in World War II.

The distinguished Yale lecturer William Lyon Phelps once said that assumptions should be thrown

out about every three weeks. But for the madmen who design out-of-this-world vehicles under the proud moniker of "Blastolene Brothers," Phelps didn't go quite far enough.

"Assumptions," says Blastolene aficionado Michael Leeds, "have to be tossed out every day. You think of the craziest design you can. And then you take it even further. If you're one of the Blastolene Brothers, there are no assumptions, no limits."

Case in point: "Big Bertha," a monster of a concept car that Leeds designed and built from the ground up. Part race car, part muscle car, and part Bat Mobile, Big Bertha will be showcased at this year's Pacific Coast Dream Machines, April 28-29 at Half Moon Bay Airport, alongside "Blown Ranger." Crafted from one fluid piece of sheet metal and powered by a 1942 Fairchild jet engine, "Ranger" is just the latest in Leeds' street-legal stable of moveable art.

More a way of life than an actual organization, the Blastolene Brothers are loosely made up of mechanics, artists, and designers Leeds has met at both art shows and car shows. The group includes people like Los Angeles artist Baron Margo, whose showcase vehicle combines roadster elegance with an updated sense

of "Lost in Space.Another sculptor, Michael Cooper, took

his talent from the art studio to the garage when he combined a 1933 Ford truck, a blown 353 cubic inch Chevy small block engine, and a whole lot of imagination to create "The Tubester."

Then there's Arizona's Rodney Rucker, a man who sees potential in every vehicle he comes across. This includes an authentic stage coach that he motorized and drives from the same seat where, a hundred years ago, the driver held reins and horse power came from actual horses.

Leeds says he and his fellow Blastolene Brothers are grateful they get to follow their dreams--and are conscientious about their part on the planet.

"I've converted Big Bertha from regular gas to propane, and plan to do the same with Blown Ranger. It's a good first step," he says. "We are all looking for the next innovations to make our cars environmentally friendly. That's going to be a huge part of where I go with upcoming projects."

Leeds has no doubt that the American car-driving future will include "sustainable" vehicles that will not only look beautiful, but also perform to top standards.

"We can figure this out," he insists. "Throw away the assumptions, and take the borders off our thinking."

In other words, think "the Blastolene way."

Dezso Molnar seems to have done it all: he's built rockets, flown jets in the US Air Force, rocked out

in bands, and invented a music toy for Mattel. He judged the X-Prize, designed lunar robots, restored a rocket car, and helped lead the U.S. assault on the land speed record.

The passion he's currently absorbed by is his gyroplane motorcycle, also known as the "gyrocycle,” an enclosed motorcycle that's built to soar. Exotic and elegant, Molnar's hybrid vehicle is one part Evel Knievel, one part George Jetson, and one part George Lucas. And a whole lot of Molnar's vision.

"I'd lost friends and family in motorcycle accidents, so I stayed away from riding," Molnar explains. "Racing bicycles and the crashes that came with it gave me respect for high speeds on 2 wheels. But for this project, I had to become a rider to truly understand the challenges motorcyclists face in city conditions and long trips."

To that end, Molnar rode across the United States. What he learned on that trip helped him design a personal aircraft that uses a motorcycle engine for propulsion, and gyrocopter rotor blades

for lift. And it's street-legal.The single-seat Molnari GT prototype

completed road and flight testing in 2006. For the past year, it has been showcased at the Florida Air Museum.

"I'm bringing the GT to the west coast for air show season," says Molnar, who admits to a zeal for sharing his invention with the fellow "gear heads" he'll meet at Dream Machines.

"The new 2 seat gyrocycle is currently getting its propeller and blades fitted. After the last series of test drives, I have a firm belief that it is a better cross country machine than the production street bikes available to the general public."

To that end, Molnar plans to use it personally for long trips. In the meantime, his mind appears to be constantly clicking, looking for the critical innovations that will give the gyrocycle consistent air time.

"I was thrilled with the local test flights we did" Molnar says of the video posted to his website at www.molnari.com. "And now it's time to leave the lab and take some voyages."

Given all he's accomplished so far, one ought not to discount his perseverance.

"I'll get there," he promises. "And have a great time along the way.”

Eric Preston’s rare antique plane, a 1909 Blériot XI, is sure to be a showstopper at this year's Pacific

Coast Dream Machines, April 28-29 at Half Moon Bay Airport.

The Blériot XI is the aircraft that was used by Louis Blériot on July 25,1909, to make the first flight across the English Channel made in a heavier-than-air aircraft.

This achievement is one of the most famous accomplishments of the early years of aviation, and not only won Blériot a lasting place in history but also assured the future of his aircraft manufacturing business.

The event caused a major reappraisal of the importance of aviation; the English newspaper, The Daily Express led its story of the flight with the headline, "Britain is no longer an Island".

The Blériot XI, designed by Raymond Saulnier, was a monoplane, with a partially covered box-girder fuselage built from ash with wire cross bracing.

The principal differences were the use of wing-warping for lateral control, and the tailplane, which had a small balanced rudder and a single rectangular horizontal tailplane with tip-mounted elevators mounted under the lower longerons of the fuselage.

Like its predecessor, the bracing and warping wires were attached to a cabane structure made of steel tubing above the fuselage and an inverted pyramid, also of steel tubing, below it.

When first built, a small teardrop-shaped fin was mounted on the cabane, but this was later removed.

The main undercarriage was also like that of the Type VIII, the wheels being mounted in castering trailing arms which could slide up and down steel tubes, the movement

being sprung by bungee cords. This simple and ingenuous design allowed

crosswind landings with less risk of damage.When shown at the Paris Aero Salon in

December 1908, the aircraft was powered by a 35 hp (26 kW) 7-cylinder R.E.P. engine driving a four-bladed paddle type propeller, but this engine proved extremely unreliable and, at the suggestion of his mechanic Ferdinand Collin, Blériot made contact with Alexandre Anzani, a famous motorcycle racer whose successes were due to the engines which he manufactured, and who had recently entered the field of aero-engine manufacture.

On 27 May 1909, the 25 horsepower (19 KW) Anzani 3-cylinder engine, produced in fan or semi-radial configurations, was fitted.

The propeller was also replaced with a Chauvière two-bladed propeller made from laminated walnut wood.

This propeller design was a major advance in French aircraft technology, and was the first European propeller to rival the efficiency of the propellers used by the Wright Brothers.

The Blériot: Hundreds of aviation wonders will be on display — stylish homebuilts, classics from the 40's and 50's, vintage warbirds, sport and ultralight aircraft. Highlights include “Mustang Madness”, a spectacular display of America’s Premier World War II Fighter; the Estrella Warbird Museum's historic Douglas C-47 (regarded as the World's Greatest Aircraft of its time), “Strega”, a highly modified P-51 and dominant 8-time class champion at the Reno Air Races, YAK Russian fighters and an impressive array of T-33, T-6 and T-28 military fighters and trainers, many doing fly-overs during the show. Thrilling rides will be offered in helicopters, vintage bi-planes, Beech 18 and T-6 military trainers and P-51 Mustang.

After five days of pushing their motorcycle streamliner to new limits on the salt flats of Bonneville, Ack Attack team set a new motorcycle land speed record with a 360.913

mph run on Sept. 26, 2008. It topped the previous 350.884 mph record set by Denis

Manning and Chris Carr in 2006.The Ack Attack’s world record run highlighted the first annual

Top 1 Oil World Land Speed Shootout, which took place at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Bonneville, Utah.

The Ack Attack team, along with several other contenders, took to the salt on Sept. 22, to begin a five day run of competing for the title of world’s fastest motorcycle.

Throughout the meet Sam Wheeler’s E-Z Hook and Mike Akatiff’s Ack Attack streamliners came close to setting a new record numerous times, but it wasn’t until the morning of Sept. 26 that the Top 1 Ack Attack team was able reach top speeds in consecutive runs and earn the new absolute motorcycle land speed record.

“What a fantastic conclusion to a great week of racing,” said Mike Akatiff, designer and owner of the Ack Attack. “We struggled on occasion early in the week, came close to breaking the record several times, and then all the elements aligned Friday morning.”

With salt and climate conditions excellent and the 900-hp ACK Attack tuned up, driver Rocky Robinson piloted the streamliner into the history books.

The team used a Suzuki Motor Corporation Hyabusa model as the base for its record-setting motorcycle. Streamliners have two wheels and a full body that encloses the driver. The 1,340 cubic centimeter (81.7 cubic inch) engine, introduced by Suzuki in 1999, made the Hyabusa the world’s fastest production motorcycle through 2001.

The Ack Attack team was the first to break the 16-year Easy Rider record by going 342mph in 2006.

Two days later, rivals Denis Manning and Chris Carr broke their record.

The 159 square miles of salt flats at Bonneville have been the site of world speed records since the 1930s. The densely packed salt on a glacial lakebed is almost perfectly flat and its uninterrupted span allows vehicles to reach high speeds. Time trials are run on the salt flats in the fall of each year after rain and heat packs the track.

The Ack Attack will be on display at the Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show, April 28-29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Half Moon Bay Airport.

Maybe yours was one of the millions of parents who, at one time or another, shook their heads and bemoaned, “What were you thinking?” You weren’t,

of course. So they then slammed you with, “Do you want to end up with a life behind bars? Well, do you?”

In the case of Dominick Guida and Boogie Breiz of Behind Bars, Inc., the answer is definitive: “Uh. Yeah!!!”

Because the bars they’re behind are mounted to a bicycle, the purest form of mobility, and, for many of us, our first, glorious taste of freedom.

“For us, Behind Bars, Inc., is a dream come true,” explained Dominick, co-founder of the decade-old business where he and Boogie build, refurbish, customize bikes and host the largest bicycle show on the West Coast. “We have also built and donated custom bicycles to auction off in the assistance of raising funds and awareness for various causes.”

Bicycle enthusiasts since childhood, the two first met ten years ago through a mutual friend. Each recognized in the other a passion for restoring and customizing bikes. A business was born. “Our most recent collaboration involves Chris Coddington; son of Legendary Hot Rod builder and designer, Boyd Coddington. Chris owns and operates Hot Rods by Boyd; a company dedicated to keeping Boyd’s legacy alive. For this collaboration we have created a limited series of hand-built custom cruisers that host styling cues inspired by Boyd Coddington,” said Boogie.

“We had a lady who wanted to restore a vintage cruiser for her mom to ride up and down the beach,” Dominick said. “We did a lot to the bike, but the result is very simple, with beautiful powder coating, and a basket on the front. It came out, if I do say so myself, just perfect, very nostalgic.”

Behind Bars Inc. is ready to “blow people away” with a showcase of award-winning, customized bicycles as they debut “Dream Cycles” at this year’s Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show, April 28-29 at Half Moon Bay Airport.

What crazy man concocted the sport of unimotorcycle racing?

Legend has it that these two motorcycle riding buddies walked into a bar in Daytona Beach, Florida. After a couple of brewskis, one guy turns to the other. His voice full of despair, he says, “You know, I’ve raced four-wheeled vehicles, three-wheeled vehicles, and two-wheeled vehicles. What’s left?”

It may sound like the beginning of a good joke. But in the late 1980s, that’s exactly how the sport of unimotorcycle racing got started.

That night, the gang at the bar filled several cocktail napkins with sketches, scribblings and ideas that officially launched the Unimotorcycle Racing phenomenon.

Several years ago, Moss Beach resident Jim Holsman attended the Unimotorcycle Racing World Championship in Holland. Holsman was hooked. He was determined to help spread the word about unimotorcycle racing and helped make it a popular part of the Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show. “There’s nothing quite like unimotorcycle racing,” said Holsman with a twinkle in his eye. “It’s great to see the passion people have for it.”

The concept of unimotorcycle racing is to travel, from a standing stop, 100-feet on one wheel with the winner determined by fastest time. Races are held on dirt to minimize the injuries from the crashes that may occur. Unicycles in competition are limited to 4’ in width and 8’ in length.

Fans can check out the action at this year’s Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show, April 28-29 at Half Moon Bay Airport (the unimotorcycle racing will be held at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on April 29 only).

“It’s very big in Europe with the Germans, Belgians, and Dutch,” explains

unimotorcycle devotee Thomas Ingraham, a resident of El Granada, and co-organizer with Holsman of the races at the Dream Machines Show. “Here, the sport is a little more organic.”

Unimotorcycle racing is the grown-up version of popping a wheelie on your favorite childhood bike. Picture the usual motorcycle: then take away the front wheel, add some modifications for speed, a few more for safety and stability, maybe a few bells and whistles for some pizzazz, and ... you’re off!

“You’re up on the back tire during the duration of the race, so obviously, there’s no steering,” says Ingraham of the straight track. “And these things really move. The fastest guy has done 100 feet in 2.5 seconds.”

Speed is, of course, the primary reason people love the sport. But for Ingraham, there’s a second component -- the camaraderie that occurs when a team of guys get together, sharing all they know about physics, geometry, and good, old-fashioned mechanics to build a winning bike.

“There will be about five or six teams from throughout the Bay Area competing at the Dream Machines Show,” he says. “We all know each other. We all share knowledge and swap parts. Don’t get me wrong; each of us wants to win. But we’re also great friends trying to promote a really unique sport and have a good time while doing it.”

T he Pacific Coast Dream Machines is more than an extravaganza for anyone who loves the spectacle of motorized power. It’s also a boon to one of the area’s true treasures — the Coastside Adult

Day Health Center.Dream Machines is always the largest fundraiser of the year

for the CADHC, which simply could not do the things it does without private support. Open since 1982, the center at 645 Correas St. in Half Moon Bay helps provide independent, safe, quality living for the Coastside’s frail elderly and disabled adults. The center also provides crucial services for caregivers who can be overwhelmed by the experience.

CADHC offers a daily program of activities and a variety of health services operated by a team of professionals and program aides. For instance, there is an Alzheimers program even a regular “Alzheimers Café” that gives those with dementia and other memory ailments a coffee shop-like environment in which to interact with others.

The CADHC works in cooperation with the participants, their caregivers and personal physicians in an atmosphere that is both caring and supportive. Other services include nursing and personal care, medication monitoring, speech, occupational and physical therapy, social services, nutritious meals, fun activities, and door-to-door wheel chair assisted transportation.

The goal is to restore and maintain physical and mental health so participants can remain in their own homes, close to family and friends in the community they helped build.

Providing such services is never easy and that is particularly true in an economic downturn. The center has several sources of funding, including private foundations, the Half Moon Bay Beautification Committee, the United Way and the San Mateo County Aging and Adult Services Department. The center also benefits from generous donations to its endowment fund.

With a backdrop of the world’s coolest cars, some of the biggest names on the Bay Area music

scene are heading down to Half Moon Bay Airport for the Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show, April 28-29.

“We’ve put together a fantastic music lineup that will rival the quality of the world-class machines on display,” said entertainment director Grant Walters, a longtime supporter of the event beneficiary, the Coastside Adult Day Health Center.

Kicking things off will be the 2nd Annual “Festival of West Coast Blues” hosted by the Stan Erhart Band with renowned sax player Nancy Wright and special guests Wendy DeWitt, “the Queen of boogie woogie piano” and Kirk Harwood, winners of the Golden Gate Blues Society International Blues Challenge, and Grant Walters on harmonica.

The “Festival of West Coast Blues” is supported by the Golden Gate Blues Society. “Festival of West Coast Blues” runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Then, get ready for The Inciters, the West Coast’s premier 60’s Soul Band, who recently released “Soul Clap”, their new album on Jump Up Records. Wielding drums, bass, guitars, a full horn section, and strong female vocal section. The Inciters perform from 1 to 4 pm.

On Sunday, The Seducers with pedal steel master Joe Goldmark bring their trademark country western sound to the stage, kicking things off at 10 a.m. Joe Goldmark used to be a member of the almost-legendary Twangbangers (that included guitar hero Redd Volkaert) and since leaving that ensemble has released five albums of pedal steel goodness. The Seducers perform from 10 a.m. to 1 pm.

Then comes the headliner, Curtis Salgado, World Renowned R&B Vocalist and Harmonica Master and BMA Soul/Blues Male Artist of the Year in 2010. Salgado effortlessly mixes blues, funk and R&B with a delivery that is raw and heartfelt.

He moves with ease from the tenderest ballads to the most full-throated stompers. Blues Revue says, “Salgado is one of the most down-to-earth, soulful, honest singers ever, and his harmonica work is smoking and thoroughly invigorating ... rollicking, funky and electrifying.”

Aside from being a tremendous vocalist, Curtis is one of the finest blues harmonica players in the world. In 1979, when John Belushi was in Eugene filming Animal House, he caught Curtis’ act and liked what he heard and saw.

Curtis took the actor under his wing and schooled him on blues and R&B history, which Belushi soaked up like a sponge, and used a good portion of Curtis’ show as the basis for the Blues Brothers act he and Dan Akroyd put together. The first Blues Brothers album was dedicated to Curtis.

Salgado performs from 1 p.m. to 4 pm.
