Man escapes fromburning vehicle“I was sitting in the kitchenwhen I heard a loud ‘bang’, andimmediately went to see whathad happened,” says Tessa vanLeeuwen Boomkamp, secretaryof the Drakenstein Farm Watch,after a vehicle rolled and burstinto flames on the SwawelstertRoad.

“When I arrived at the scene,the car was only burning slight-ly. I asked two men on the scenewhere the driver was and if any-one was injured.

“But they told me that thedriver was not in the vehicle.”

Tessa removed the fire extin-guisher from the Farm Watchvehicle and tried to extinguishthe flames.

Unfortunately the carwouldn’t stop burning and soonit was engulfed in flames.

Tessa then noticed the driverwandering around, with bloodcoming from his head.

She approached him and

asked him to sit on the groundso that she could give him somemedical assistance while wait-ing for the emergency services.

“Once the driver was sittingdown, stabilised and breathingnormally, I went back to theroad towarn oncoming traffic ofthe accident sceneas the carwasnow burning badly,” explainedVan Leeuwen Boomkamp.

She then stayed with the driv-er until the ambulance servicearrived.

The 39-year-old driver fromKylemore was transported toPaarl Hospital for further medi-cal treatment. He sustainedhead and lower back injuries.

During one of these incidents a man was struck in the back by a bullet,while another victim’s car was damaged.

And there is evidence that the now notorious balaclava-gang is still verymuch active, with another attack taking place on a Stellenbosch farm.

The once relatively quiet Drakenstein valley is now truly being batteredby the unrelenting fist of crime and it seems as if the long arm of the lawis battling to take control the situation.

It is clear that the police force just cannot deal with the current spateof crime. There is now far more pressure on residents to assist them bybeing the so-called eyes and the ears of the police force.

This isn’t fair, many will say, but unfortunately, that is now how it is.The community is therefore encouraged to become involved in their

local neighbourhood watches, or to establish one. It is also important tobecome involved in community policing forums and to keep the telephonenumber at hand of your police sector manager.

Putting every possible kind of pressure on criminals must eventuallydeter them from committing crimes in our valley.

I have on various occasions beento Telkom in the Paarl Mall and theservice is just terrible–noonehelpsyou. I have completed all the neces-sary documentation.

A month and a half ago a techni-cian, David, was at my house to as-

sess the previous line etc. and hesaid all was in order for the connec-tion and the line will be connectedwithin a day or two. But I am stillwaitingandthatwasthe last Iheardof him.

I am elderly and have health is-sues and I am looking after mydaughter who is also ill. A landlineis thus crucial for me, also for mysafety.

The strange thing is that I left myprevious address in Orange Street,Paarl, a year ago, and I have beeninformed that Telkom technicianshave now been to my old addressfour times to install a phone.

This just does not make any senseand is an example of really poor ser-vice.

Nadat daar verlede week breedvoe-rig berig is in Paarl Post oor die be-rugte blouhuis, was ek diep teleur-gesteld teenoor die houding van diemunisipaliteit se noodkamer.

Saterdaghetwatervanafdieblou-huis dwarsdeur my erf begin loop.Oënskynlik is ’n onwettige water-koppeling gemaak en die waterstroom toe net van daar af uit.

Toe ek dit die Saterdagmiddagaan die munisipaliteit rapporteer,isdaaraanmygesêekmoeteenvou-dig die voorval Maandag rappor-teer.

Maar intussen stroom duisendeliters water daar uit. Dit is sekerlik’n reuse vermorsing van water, enwie gaan op die ou einde van die dagdaarvoor betaal? Ek sal maar mymunisipale rekening goed moetdophou om te kyk dat daar nie skie-lik ’n reuse-aanslag op my gemaakgaan word nie.

Paarlite shines inbandanadesign competitionA young Paarl designer has wonThe Sunflower Fund competition2015 to design a bandana.

During this competition, secondyear students fromdesigncollegesanduniversities across South Africa arecommissionedbyTheSunflowerFundto design the bandana for NationalBandana Day.

The judges were overwhelmed withthe number of entries received and thehigh standard of the designs, makingthe final decision a very difficult one.

The winning design as well as thirdplace were awarded to students fromCape Peninsula University of Technol-ogy (CPUT). This is the first time sincethe inception of this competition thatCPUT has had two entries in the top

three. The first prize was awarded toMelinda van der Merwe from Paarl,who will receive a Pick n Pay voucherto the value of R5 000, the second placetoTerryJonyo,NeliswaJiliandNatha-biseng Molefe collectively who willshareaPicknPayvoucherto thevalueof R3 000, and the third place winner,SuzanneSwanepoelwill receiveaPick’n Pay voucher worth R2 000.

The inspiration behind Melinda’swinning design relates to how everyperson in the world is different, butwhenputtogether,theycreateabeauti-ful pattern.

She particularly used South Africanshapesandtraditionalpatternstoillus-trate this. Her design symbolises thateveryone is equal, no matter who theyare and that by uniting we can give

hope and decorate each other’s lives ina positive way.

National Bandana Day is The Sun-flower Fund’s biggest fundraiser andis celebrated on 12 October each year.

Melinda’s design will adorn the offi-cial Bandana Day bandana next year.

Theysay“youcan’tteachanolddognewtricks”, but that is literally what LloydBristow has been doing for the past 14years.

When he was growing up on a farm out-sidePortShepstoneinKwazulu-Natal,dogswould always follow him around, whetherthey were his own or belonged to familymembers.This ultimately led him to dog training,

a hobby that eventually paid off to such anextent that Bristow, an electrical engineerby training,decided tosellhisbusinessandpursue a career in dog agility, devoting histime and attention to training his talentedcollection of canines and performing withthem in The Incredible Dog Show.Afterbeingchosen torepresentSouthAf-

rica at the World Agility Championshipsin 2000, Bristow started presenting dogshows at schools in order to raise funds togo to the championships.This went so well that he eventually de-

cided to make it a permanent hobby, doingat least a show a day and touring the coun-try, educating children and adults alikeabout dogs.Bristow spends five months a year in

Paarl, presenting shows at schools, fund-raisers, agricultural exhibitions and festi-vals across the Western Cape, after whichhe tours the country for seven months do-ing the same.Bristow says he mainly uses five dogs in

his shows, and also trains them on a dailybasis.“It is playing more than training.” He

says the dogs love the show and that iswhyhe uses them as long as they are willing,usually up to the age of 12 or 13.“As long as they are fit and healthy and

show me they still want to perform. If youstop, most times they will fall over and diebecause they love the show so much.”Bristow won the South Africa agility

championships in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and2012 with a toy poodle called Vibe and then

again, this year, with a toy poodle calledDazzler.Since 2000 he has participated in the

world championships eight times – held inFinland, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Switz-erland, Austria, Germany again and TheCzech Republic.He qualified many other times, but had

to decline due to the costs thereof. Bristowsays the participants do not get sponsoredand therefore have to carry the cost them-selves.Most years, about 33 countries compete

at the world championships.His best individual result at the world

championshipswas 10th position and theirbest team result was fifth place.The best part of his job? Spending time

with his dogs andmaking a positive differ-ence in South Africa.“To teach children to look after their ani-

mals and tohave the opportunity to inspirepeople to work hard to achieve their goalsand dreams.”He says the show is much more that just

great entertainment.“It teaches importantaspectsofresponsi-

ble pet ownership and the very best partis that it carries a powerful motivationalmessage. SURPLUS APPORTIONMENT - UPDATE

As advised in Surplus Communication Number Four, the Trustees have submitted theproposed project plan to the Financial Services Board to complete a Surplus ApportionmentScheme (detailing how the surplus is tobedistributed amongst eligible stakeholders).

The Actuary appointed by the Fund to assist the Fund with its Surplus Apportionment hasanalysed the data required for the surplus calculations and has requested that theadministrator of the Fund provides additional data in order to complete the surplusapportionment calculations.

Since most of the data required were not stored electronically as the data is required fromJanuary 1980, the administrator is in the process of extracting the data from paper recordswhich has significantly lengthened the process of finalising the data for the surplusapportionment.

The Trustees have thus submitted a revised project plan to the Financial Services Board tocomplete a Surplus Apportionment Scheme (detailing how the surplus is to be distributedamongst eligible stakeholders).

The Actuary needs to finalise the calculations before the Trustees of the Fund can considerthe Surplus Apportionment Scheme.

Asmentioned earlier, the Actuary has requested additional data required for calculating theproposed distribution of surplus and to identify thememberswhowill be eligible for surplus.

Please note that registration as a former member of the Fund is not a guarantee that anysurplus payment is due, as this will only be finalised once the authorities have approvedthe scheme.

The Surplus Apportionment Scheme has to be formally approved by the Financial ServicesBoard before any payments can start. This approval process can take many months, and isnot likely tobe finalised before theendof 2015.

Thereare sixmain points tounderstand at this stage:1. Theprocess is going to takea long time to complete. This is not the fault of the Trustees or

theAdministrator of the Fund, but simply due to the complexity of all the required steps,as prescribed in legislation.It is not possible at this stage togivean indication ofwhen theprocesswill be completed.

2. It is unlikely that therewill bemuchmoney, if any, todistribute toactive Fundmembers asformermemberswhodid not receiveboth their and the Employer's contributions whenthey left the Fundhave tobepaid beforeany surplus canbeawarded toactivemembers.

3. No cashpayments canbemade toanyonewho is still anactiveFundmember.4. Nopaymentswill bemade until the required approvals from the authorities havebeen

obtained and the surplus process is completed. As the surplus processwill not becompleted this year nopayments toanypotentially eligible pastmemberswill bedonethis year.

5. Once the surplus apportionment process has been completedeverypastmemberwhohas registeredwith the Fundwill receivea letter fromthe Fund advising themwhethertheyhavequalified for a surplus benefit or not.

6. Similarly every activeFundmemberwill also be advised by the Fund inwriting as towhether theywill benefit from the surplus apportionment or not.

KEEP ON SWIMMING: The 14th Annual Winelands Mile Charity swim was held at Calais Wine Estateon Saturday. The beautiful scenery was enjoyed by more than a 100 participants who braved the 1,6 kmswim. Chilly conditions could not keep an enthusiastic crowd away while they enjoyed a funfilled day.

Die span het slegs teen die Hoër-skool Noord Kaap verloor. Uitblin-kers vir Boland Landbou was Slab-bert la Grange wat reeds 500 lopiesdié seisoen aangeteken het.

Boland Landbou is uitgenooi omin Januarie aan Jeppe se 150-jarigekrieketfees deel te neem waar diespan teen KES, Waterkloof en Jeppete staan sal kom.
