Still noWaterfront ?The Paarl Squash Club is con-

fident that the building oftheir new facility will com-

mence in September if all goeswell.

The club’s Nicky Vlok told PaarlPost this week that according to hisknowledge the first set of plans hasalready been approved by the Drak-enstein Municipality and althoughthey have made a few adjustments,they are optimistic that construc-tion work should commence at theBoy Louw sports grounds in Sep-tember.

The squash club and the cricketclub are set to relocate to a piece of

land adjacent to the Boy Louwgrounds (behind the racing pigeonclub) to make way for the Paarl Wa-terfront development at the MarketStreet sports grounds.

The Drakenstein Municipalityconfirmed this week that they arewaiting for plans to be submittedwhich will include the squash club.They, however, stated that they arealso in the process of applying forclosure permits. According to un-confirmed reports this is so thatthey can upgrade these sportsgrounds to a better standard.

“We have started the process ofan environmental impact study andhave submitted the scoping report

to the Department of Environmen-tal Affairs and Development Plan-ning for comment. There will alsobe an opportunity for the public tocomment on the closure.

“A project team from the munici-pality together with our attorney ismonitoring the process closely,”said Johann Mettler, municipalmanager.

As far as the future of the othersports clubs at the Market Streetsports grounds is concerned, thebuilding of a new canoe club is wellunder way.

An agreement was reached previ-ously that a new club will be builton land opposite the existing club.

In April it was reported that thePaarl Rugby Club would receive acash settlement in exchange for thepremises. Despite recent rumoursof a pay-out of R6,4 million to theclub, the municipality claims thatno money has been paid as yet.

“This will only happen againstregistration of transfer. The devel-oper and the club will then agree asto when the club needs to vacate thepremises. The building of othersports facilities will only commenceonce the land has been transferredto the developer.

“Transfer will take place after therequired legal requirements havebeen met,” said Mettler.

The rugby club is currently look-ing at various venues for their newheadquarters. One of these is the ev-er popular German Club in KleinParys.

The Paarl Waterfront develop-ment which will include a hotel,conference centre, office park, sportscience centre, residential area andrestaurants, was originally sched-uled to be completed in time for the2010 Soccer World Cup, but was puton hold due to the issues regardingthe removal of the sports clubs cur-rently on these premises.

In spite of these issues havingbeen partially resolved, no sod hasyet been turned on the site.

The 52nd edition of the exciting Berg River Canoe marathon kicked off yesterday. Hundreds of supporters showed their support whenthe race officially got under way at 09:30 at the Market Street bridge. Tuesday, however, saw a different side to the Berg, when agroup of children allegedly pelted rowers with stones as they were nearing the end of the time trial which started at the Berg River Re­sort. Municipal spokesperson, May Carolissen, confirmed the incident. One canoe was struck by a stone, but no one was injured. Local schools still open next termThe two local schools, LK Zeeman and Ber-grivier Primary Schools, which are amongstthe 17 schools fighting against closure, willkeep their doors open until the final verdictwill be delivered by the Western Cape HighCourt.The case was again heard in the Western

CapeHighCourtOnFriday.According to law-yers acting on behalf of the provincial educa-tiondepartment, theprocess leading to thede-cision to close 17 Western Cape schools wasprocedurally fair.Eduard Fagan, who spoke on behalf of edu-

cation MEC Donald Grant and his depart-ment, said the Schools Act did not compel hisclient to consult the affected communities.Grant announced last year that LK Zeeman

Primary and Bergrivier Primary will have toclose their doors due to dwindling numbersand lownumeracy and literacy results. Grant

insists that these schools be closedand thepu-pils attend schools in the vicinity that havea better infrastructure.The provincial department have, however,

givenschoolgoverningbodiesanopportunitytomakerepresentations toGrantonhis inten-tion to close schools during public hearingslast year. Fagan argued Grant supplied theschools with sufficient reasons to close.But the governing bodies and parents of the

pupils, togetherwiththeSouthAfricanDemo-cratic Teachers Unions, applied for an urgentinterim interdict in the Western Cape HighCourt requesting that the closure of theschools be postponed and investigated.The hearing was postponed on Friday and

Gentle Italian passes awayAnother stalwart of the Paarl Ital-ian community has passed away.

Maria Sieli De Candia passedaway on Saturday evening, 6 July,after a battle with cancer.

She was married for 46 years toGiulio who owned Northern PaarlService Station and Audio Serviceand Repair. Her two sons, Nataleand Salvatore are well-known inPaarl as the owners of Paarl Audioand Visual Centre.

The family this week said thattheirmother was a true icon of un-conditional love and respect whosetanexample forthewhole familyon the values of life.

“She was adedicated anddevoted wife,mother andgrandmother.Her greatestpassion, in thetrue Italianfashion,washerfamily. She willbe dearlymissed by herhusband, chil-dren and grandchildren. She willalways be in our hearts.”

She is survived by her husbandand sons, daughter Lorenza and

three grand-chil-dren. Maria’s fu-neral takes place onFriday 12 July at11:00 at St. Augus-tine’s Roman Cath-olic Church in Vander Lingen Street,Paarl. A wake willbe held afterwardsat the Italian Clubin Klein Parys,Paarl. The family

It is an absolute disgrace what took place this week on the eve of thestart of the 52nd Berg River Canoe Marathon.During time trials on Tuesday, a group of children on the bank of

the Berg River, in the vicinity of the Arboretum in Paarl, pelted canoe-ists with stones.Needless to say, the culprits quickly disappeared, leaving no one be-

hind to be brought to book.Fortunately there were no injuries.For more than half a century the Berg River Canoe Marathon has

been the pride of Paarl, attracting canoeists from not only across thecountry, but from across the world as well.However, such actions can do much harm to this supreme sporting

event. Already entry numbers have dwindled in the past few years.Onemust remember that themarathon is also to Paarl’s tourism seg-

ment. Inevitably this unfortunate stone throwing event has beenbroad-cast across the country, marring the reputation of both Paarl’s tourismindustry as well as this illustrious race.Such an incident is definitely not something we can afford on the
