Adverbs of Manner

We use adverbs of manner to describe how

we do things.

情態副詞用作形容某件事是如何做的。

Usage

Most adverbs of manner add ‘-ly’ at the end of an adjective:

大部分情態副詞由形容詞加上 「-ly」 組成:

The tortoise is slow. It walks slowly.

Jenny is a cheerful girl. She laughs cheerfully.

If the adjective ends with ‘-y’, replace the ‘-y’ with ‘-ily’ :

如形容詞以 「-y」 作結,需用 「-ily」 取代:

My sister is happy. She is singing happily.

Mum is very angry. She shouts angrily at us.

Some adjectives and adverbs have the same spelling; some adverbs change

completely:

部分形容詞跟副詞一模一樣;部分則完全不同:

John is a fast runner. He runs fast.

Katy is a good pianist. She plays the piano well.
