LA CONTAMINACION DEL AIRE Y SUS EFECTOS EN LA SALUD HUMANA

La contaminación del aire no sólo afecta negativamente la salud humana. sino que también impacta la visibilidad.

En la región fronteriza Arizona/Sonora, la contaminación del aire afecta a las comunidades de los dos lados de la frontera. Es

importante difundir la mayor cantidad de información al respecto incluyendo tipos de contaminantes

presentes, pronósticos de índices de calidad del aire, efectos de la contaminación en la salud humana y formas de reducir o evitar la exposición.

La contaminación por partículas (PM) es una compleja mezcla de pequeñas partículas sólidas y líquidas que se encuentran suspendidas en el

aire. Es el tipo de contaminación más extendido y el que afecta a un mayor número de personas.

Estas partículas provienen de varias fuentes pero entre las más comunes se encuentran polvo de calles

sin pavimento, emisiones vehiculares y quemas de basura.

La contaminación del aire puede causar o agravar ciertos problemas de salud, especialmente en grupos sensibles como niños, ancianos y personas con padecimientos respiratorios o cardíacos.

Entre los efectos a la salud humana más comunes causados o agravados por la exposición a la contaminación por partículas se encuentran la irritación e inflamación del tejido pulmonar; cambios en la química de la sangre que pueden causar coágulos; incremento en la susceptibilidad a virus y bacterias; puede empeorar los padecimientos crónicos como enfermedades pulmonares, cardiovasculares y ciertas alergias. Las partículas finas (menores de 2.5 micrómetros) pueden alojarse en los pulmones y causar fuertes reacciones. Las partículas aún más pequeñas (0.1 micrómetros o menores) pueden incluso llegar al torrente sanguíneo y

ser transportadas a diferentes órganos del cuerpo.

AIR POLLUTION AND ITS EFFECTS ON HUMAN HEALTH

Not only does air pollution negatively affect human health and quality of life, but it also impairs visibility.

In the Arizona/Sonora border region, air pollution affects communi-ties on both sides of the border. It is important to dissemi-nate as much information as possible regarding this topic, including the types of contaminants present, air qual-ity index forecasts, air pollution effects on human health, and ways of reducing or avoiding exposure.

Particulate matter (PM) pollution consists of a complex mixture of solid and liquid particles that are suspended in the air. It is the most wide-spread type of pollution and the one that affects the most people. These particles come from vari-ous sources and include dust from unpaved roads, vehicle emissions, and burning garbage.

Air pollution can cause or aggravate certain health prob-lems, especially in sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and people with respiratory and cardiovascular ailments.

Among the most common human health effects caused or aggravated by ex-posure to particulate air pollution are irritation and inflammation in the lung tissue; changes in blood chemistry that may cause blood clots; increase in susceptibility to viruses and bacteria; exacerbation of chronic ailments such as pulmonary and cardiovascu-lar disease and certain allergies. The fine par-ticles (less than 2.5 micrometers) can lodge themselves into the lungs and cause severe reactions. The even smaller particles (0.1 mi-crometers or less) can enter the bloodstream and be transported to different organs in the body.

In the border region, ADEQ issues air quality forecasts for the areas of Nogales and Yuma, Ariz. The forecasts are distributed via e-mail to schools, government offices, and those

individuals who have signed-up to receive them. The daily forecasts are also available at http://www.DailyAirInfoAZ.com/. The forecasts include the Air Quality Index and the color associated with the current day, the previous day, and the following day. When the Air Qual-ity Index falls within the moderate category or higher, a health statement is issued, advising the public on what to do (or not to do) to minimize the risks associated with the level of air pollution.

Air pollution occurs when the air contains gases, dust or fumes in concentrations that can be harmful to human health and well-being, or that can cause damage

to plants and animals. The substances that cause air pollution are called pollutants. There are many sources of these pollutants and include unpaved roads, vehicles, fires, and industrial or construction activities.

La contaminación del aire ocurre cuando éste contiene gases, polvo o humo en con-centraciones que pueden ser nocivas para la salud y el bienestar de los seres huma-

nos, o que pueden dañar a plantas y animales. A las sustancias que causan la contami-nación del aire se les llama contaminantes. Hay muchas fuentes que producen dichos contaminantes y entre éstas se encuentran calles sin pavimento, vehículos, incendios y actividades de construcción e industriales.

Dust can cause strong reactions for sensitive people and those suffering from respiratory ailments. You can minimize the risk by: 1) staying inside most of the time on dusty days,

2) installing weather stripping around all doors and windows or, if weather stripping cannot be installed, use cloth covers to seal windows and frames, 3) dusting off your furniture and floors and when possible, use a vacuum that has a fine filter.

Sometimes indoor air quality is as bad, or even worse, than outdoor air quality. Why? The most common reason is the excessive or inappropriate use of some chemical

products, such as household cleaners, deodorizers, pesticides, paints, glues, solvents, etc. Use these products as indicated by the manufacturer and in well ventilated areas, or find alternative products that are less harmful to you and the environment.

Algunas veces la calidad del aire en el interior de nuestros hogares es tan mala, o incluso peor, que el aire en el exterior. ¿Por qué sucede esto? La razón más común

es el uso excesivo o inapropiado de algunos productos químicos como limpiadores, aro-matizantes, pesticidas, pinturas, pegamentos, solventes, etc. Use estos productos de la forma indicada por el fabricante y en áreas bien ventiladas o busque productos alterna-tivos que sean menos nocivos para usted y para el medio ambiente.

In some areas, hot days are also the days when the air is negatively impacted by ground-level ozone (smog), produced when the sun’s rays interact with certain gases,

such as those from vehicle exhaust. Whenever possible, limit the use of your car, plan to do several errands in one trip, fill up your car in the morning or after the sun has set and do not "top off" the gas tank when refueling. It is also a good idea to keep your tires inflated at the appropriate air pressure.

En algunas áreas, los días calurosos son también los días cuando el aire se ve nega-tivamente afectado por la generación de ozono (smog) a nivel del suelo, el cual se

produce por la interacción de los rayos del sol con algunos gases, por ejemplo los gases de combustión de nuestros vehículos. pollutants into the air. Take your car in for a tune up and have it repaired. By doing this you will get rid of the bothersome noises and odors and you will be helping keep our air clean.

In some communities there are still unpaved roads which are a main source of dust, one of the most common pollutants in the border region. Whenever possible, avoid

driving on unpaved roads. If you don’t have a choice, please drive slowly. Also, if your backyard or patio consists of bare soil, use some type of cover material, such as gravel or grass to reduce the amount of dust being produced. Less dust means fewer negative impacts on your health.

En algunas comunidades aún existen calles sin pavimentar las cuales son una im-portante fuente de polvo, uno de los contaminantes más comunes en la región

fronteriza. Si puede, evite manejar en calles sin pavimento pero si no tiene alternativa, maneje despacio. Si el patio de su casa es simplemente suelo desnudo, use algún tipo de cobertura como grava o pasto para reducir la cantidad de polvo que se levanta. Menos polvo significa menos efectos negativos para su salud.

Diesel exhaust contains more than 40 hazardous air pollutants in addition to particu-late matter (PM). These pollutants include many known or suspected carcinogens

such as benzene, arsenic and formaldehyde. Diesel exhaust also contains other harmful pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), both of which are components of ground level ozone (smog). Some of the health effects related to diesel exhaust include cough and phlegm; nausea; throat, eye and lung irritation; and respiratory illnesses.

Los gases de combustión del diésel contienen más de 40 contaminantes peligrosos del aire además de partículas (PM). Entre estos contaminantes se encuentran muchas

sustancias que se sabe o se sospecha pueden producir cáncer, sustancias como el benceno, el arsénico, y formaldehído. In some areas, garbage collection service is irregular, which can cause you to accu-mulate more trash than usual. When this happens, it is tempting to simply burn the

trash to eliminate the problem. However, that would release a considerable amount of particulate pollution. This can adversely affect human health, especially for sensitive groups such as the elderly and children, or those with respiratory or cardiovascular ill-nesses. Do everything in your power to avoid burning trash.

En algunas áreas el servicio de recolección de basura es irregular y puede ocasionar que a veces se acumule más basura de lo normal. Cuando esto sucede, es fácil caer

Let's protect our children from the effects of air pollution. Children raised in heav-ily polluted areas have reduced lung capacity, prematurely aged lungs and increased

Exercising outdoors is a good idea. However, outdoor physical activity should be reduced or avoided on days when air quality is poor. Also, avoid exercising near

obvious sources of air pollution such as unpaved lots, roads with heavy traffic, chemical processing plants, or nearby fires.

Hacer ejercicio físico al aire libre es una buena idea. Sin embargo, la actividad física al aire libre deberá reducirse o evitarse los días en que la calidad del aire sea mala.

Además, debe evitarse hacer ejercicio cerca de fuentes de contaminación muy obvias, como lotes sin pavimento, calles muy transitadas, plantas de procesamiento químico, o cercano a incendios.

In some areas, the use of fireplaces and woodstoves is very popular, especially in winter-time, but wood burning results in high levels of air pollution that can harm your health

and the environment. Avoid wood burning of any kind, but if you must, make sure that your fireplace is working properly; don’t burn trash or treated wood, and make sure your wood has been split and dried for at least six months ahead of time to ensure good combus-tion.

En algunas áreas es muy popular el uso de chimeneas y estufas de leña, especialmente en invierno, pero la quema de leña produce elevados niveles de contaminación del aire que

puede dañar la salud y el medio ambiente. Evite la quema de leña de cualquier tipo, pero si tiene que hacerlo, asegúrese que su chimenea está operando adecuadamente, no queme madera de desperdicio ni tratada, y asegúrese que la leña ha sido partida y se ha secado cuando menos seis meses antes para asegurar una buena combustión.
