OKLAHOMA CITY

OklahomaCityThe Newest Frontier

Oklahoma City is a surpriseto many visitors and newcomers, with all thefriendliness of a small townand the amenities of ournation’s biggest cities. Andwith over fifty attractions, museums and other activities, visitors will never be at aloss for fun things to seeand do.

Oklahoma City was bornin a single day - April 22,1889. Just a little over acentury ago, the site ofOklahoma City was a grass-and-timbered land of gentlyrolling hills flattening outinto prairie in the west. Injust over 100 years, thiscollection of tents grew toa metropolitan city thatsprawls across 625 squaremiles of America's heartland. Its metro population numbersover a million - a third of theentire state’s population.

ABOUT OUR PAST…Oklahoma’s written histo-

ry began in 1541 whenSpanish explorer Coronadoventured through this area.At that time, it was the homeof the Plains Indian tribes, such as the Osage, Kiowa,Apache and Comanche. In1803, Oklahoma was soldto the U.S. as part of theLouisiana Purchase.

In the 1830s, the federalgovernment forced the FiveCivilized Tribes to leavetheir homelands. Thesetribes were living in thesoutheastern part of the U.S.They had to walk toOklahoma over a trail thatbecame known as the “Trailof Tears.” Many men, women and children diedduring this long andtreacherous trip. Once thesepeople settled here, Oklahomabecame Indian Territory.

Cowboys began theirhistory on the Texas plains.Texas ranchers found theyhad large supplies of beefwith no place to sell it. TheEast Coast needed beef. Tomeet that demand, Texasranchers had to move theircattle to the closest railroads, which were in Kansas. TheChisholm Trail and other cattle routes were madethrough Oklahomabetween 1866 and 1889.While traveling throughOklahoma, the ranchersrealized the territory was notonly closer to the railroads, but a good location for raisingcattle as well. There wasone parcel of land that wasnever given over to anyIndian tribe - theUnassigned Lands. In the1880s, many frontierAmericans wanted to moveinto this land. Soon, landlesspioneers began slippingover into this area withoutauthorization. Thesewere the “Boomers,” whowere trying to force t h egovernment into openingthe territory up to homesteaders.

Pres ident BenjaminHarrison signed legislationthat opened up theUnassigned Lands and on

April 22, 1889, about50,000 homesteadersgathered at the boundaries. At noon, the cannonroared, and the hordes ofpeople streamed over theline on wagons and buckboards, horseback, onfoot and even on bicyclesinto the two million acresof land, made their claimsand, overnight, OklahomaCity grew out of theplains. The settlers whoentered to claim landbefore the official start ofthe land run were calledSooners. Hence the state’snickname. On November16, 1907, the OklahomaTerritory and Indian Territoryjoined, and Oklahomabecame the 46th state.

OKLAHOMACITYTODAYThe pioneer zeal of thoseearly settlers is just as evident in the OklahomaCity of today. The westernspirit that helped foundOklahoma City is apparenteverywhere you go.Oklahomans are just aslikely to be wearing bootsand a cowboy hat as theyare a suit and tie.Magnificent attractions

like the National Cowboyand Western HeritageMuseum, Remington ParkRace Track, Frontier CityTheme Park, and the RedEarth Indian Center allreflect the strong ties thisarea has with its westernheritage.

In the early 1990s, the leaders of Oklahoma Citywere faced with a decision:to compete or retreat. Thedecision was made tocompete and the citylaunched a visionary project -one that would change theface of Oklahoma Cityforever. That plan wasMetropolitan Area Projects(MAPS), an ambitiousprogram that is one of the most aggressive and successful public-privatepartnerships ever undertakenin the U.S. The currentamount being spent in thispublic/private partnershipexceeds $8 billion.

As a result of that vision, visitors can now enjoy a multitude of new attractions and entertainmentoptions. The NBAOklahoma City Thunder

attract record crowds withits fast-paced, pulse-pounding action in theChesapeake Energy Arena. The arena has proven to bean ideal location for sports, concerts and events.

The ChickasawBricktownBallpark is home to theOklahoma City Dodgers, the Los Angles DodgersTriple A affiliate, and hasbeen named one of thenation's top two minorleague baseball facilities.

The Bricktown Canalextends through theBricktown entertainmentdistrict -- just east of down-town, past the Ballpark to theOklahoma River. The river aseven-mile-long series of riverlakes bordered by landscapedareas, trails and recreationalfacilities. Shops, restaurantsand entertainment, hikingand biking trails, and parkareas are part of this developed area.

Visitors to OKC have aconvenient new way tomove around downtown. The Oklahoma CityStreetcar connects visitorsto hotels, dining andattractions throughout

Downtown. Seven carsrun on two loops, withvarying schedules. With22 platforms on the 4.7-mile loop, passengers onlyneed to walk a coupleblocks to find a platform.Day passes are availableon each platform for $3, orsingle-use tickets areavailable for one dollar.

On Friday and Saturday,Bricktown has a dedicatedloop that runs from theMyriad Gardens to EastBricktown every 15 min-utes until 2:00 a.m. TheDowntown loop overlapsthe Bricktown loop.Service along theDowntown loop runsseven days a week.

Streetcars arrive at theDowntown platformsevery 12-14 minutes. TheDowntown Map on page40 provides more routeinformation.

Oklahoma City isn't lackingin entertainment options, either. The Oklahoma CityPhilharmonic Orchestra,Ballet Oklahoma, andBroadway shows at LyricTheatre and the Civic Centerare just the beginning.Beautiful lakes, parks andsome of the nation's bestgolf courses and tennis facilities also await the outdoor enthusiast.

Welcome to the newOklahoma City!

As the nation’s largest stockyardand only one in the world workingwithin a historic district, OklahomaCity’s Stockyards City has long beena draw for tourists and locals. Sinceopening in late October 2017,McClintock Saloon & Chop House,2227 Exchange Avenue providesguests with a taste of what theyexpect to see in OKC. It’s the realdeal; there are cowboys down herebecause they’re making a living here.

One of the most well-known andrenowned French restauranteurs inthe state is Michel Buthion, half ofthe brother team that owns LaBaguette Bistro on north MayAvenue. There is something a littleamusing about a cowboy that speaksFrench, but it was Buthion’s dream toopen a saloon in the Stockyards district.McClintock Saloon & Chop House isMichel’s latest endeavor. Buthion’sco-owner, Lindsey Ocker, openedMcClintock Boots in the same location, 2227 Exchange Avenue, in2002.

You won’t find a hitching post outside and there are no swingingdoors, but you’ll discoverMcClintock’s Saloon to be anextremely appealing place to enjoy a

great dining experience and maybethree fingers of whiskey like theCowboys of the Wild West did.

What you’ll notice right off the batis the 50-foot-long, solid oak bar andback bar complete with a largepainting of a nude woman hangingover it, adding that brothel touch, justlike in the old west. The maincolumns of the back bar feature

ornate sculptures of Helen of Troyand Hercules, commissioned by anartist in St. Petersburg, Russia, thatstand tall amongst the saloon’simpressive selection of alcohol thatincludes over 200 styles of whiskeyand healthy selections of tequilas andmescal in addition to vodka and gin.The back bar also includes two

stained-glass windowsthat are at least 100years old; one, fromBoston, is of SamuelAdams and the other, from Ireland, includesverse from Hamlet.

You won’t find WyattEarp or Marshall Dillonbut you will find thequality of their cuisine -the product of carefulplanning by some of thefinest restaurateurs andchefs in this part of thecountry - to be exceptional. The steaksare big, and the flavorsare bold, and dinner diners in jeans and cow-

boy boots are as common as those incoat and tie.

McClintock’s features a chophousemenu with all the steaks, chops andseafood you expect: two sizes of filet,14-ounce strip and rib-eye, a monsterrib-eye for two, chicken-fried steak andquail, pork chops, rack of lamb andfried chicken. Fresh oysters from theEast and West markets are availabledaily, too, as are fish features andshrimp cocktail.

For lunch, McClintock is an attrativeoption for downtowners, featuringluncheon steak, a tasty set of

sandwiches includinga Monte Cristo,Club, Grandma'sMeatloaf, andGrilled Salmon. Themenu also featuresfour burger selections.

Steakhouses are not always adept at non-steakitems. And far toomany would-be r e s t a u r a n t e u r sassume servingbrunch is as easy as throwing a coupleof eggs on top of existing menu items. Not at McClintock. The brunch menuhere isn’t enormous, but it’s wellthought out and well executed.McClintock’s weekend brunch 10 a.m.-to 3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday usuallyincludes live music by a local folk, bluegrass or country band.

McClintock’s is located at 2227Exchange Avenue – Stockyards City(just south of I-40 and on Agnew) andopens for brunch at 10 a.m. Saturdayand Sunday, and at 11 a.m. the rest of the week. It closes at 10 p.m.Sunday through Thursday with a latemenu running 10 p.m. to midnight on the weekend. Reservations are not required but suggested by calling405-232-0151 or visitingMcClintocksaloon.com.

he world’s most famous amphibian, Kermit the Frog,is the star of a new exhibit at the American Banjo

Museum. Jim Henson – Life and Legacy fondly remembersthe optimistic visionary who created the Muppets and positively influenced generations of the young and youngat heart.

Henson was born in 1936 near Leland, Mississippi andwith his father’s purchase of a TV set in 1950, Hensonknew he had found his calling. Seeing puppetry as a wayto grow along with the new medium, it all came together in1955 when Henson found almost immediate televisionsuccess with his first puppet show, Sam and Friends.

Naming his creations Muppets, Henson’s growing troupeof characters found work in countless innovative televisioncommercials and soon found themselves as guest stars onnational network variety shows. When a new cast ofMuppet characters took up residence on Sesame Street in1969, his identity as both a puppeteer as well as an icon ofchildren’s entertainment were firmly established.

Throughout his career, Jim Henson’s lifelong affectionfor the banjo was obvious. From Kermit’s earliest banjoappearance on Sam and Friends in the 1950s and 1960s toThe Muppet Show guest stars such as Roy Clark and SteveMartin – Henson presented the music and visual dynamicof the banjo to an international audience.

It is, however, those magical three minutes and twentyseconds which open 1979’s The Muppet Movie which willforever connect Jim Henson and Kermit the Frog, with thebanjo. As Kermit strums his banjo and whimsically ponders the life questions subtly embedded into the lyricsof The Rainbow Connection, he finds the inner voice weall seek, telling us that we can accomplish anything.

In addition to Kermit the Frog, original artwork, rarephotographs, pop culture objects and many very personalinsights, Jim Henson – Life and Legacy features a veryspecial banjo as well. One of the most famous banjos of alltime, the Muppets Banjo, originally owned and played byBritish musician Martin Kershaw, has arguably accompaniedmore stars than any other banjo in history.

The American Banjo Museum is located at 9 EastSheridan in the heart of Bricktown and is open Tuesday thru Saturday from 11am-6 pm and Sunday,Noon – 5 pm. For more information visit www.americanbanjomuseum.com or call 405-604-2793.
