AND NOW A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR….

BY MISS BETTY MARKEY

First Period-1844-1872

The name of two of these priests, I remember from hearing my parents speak of them,

was Father Belleclaire and Father Chandy. While in Sherman, Texas many years ago Father

Blum, then pastor there told me of visiting our home. He said that he "rode there during the

night, for fear of hostile whites, not Indians, Catholic priests were not popular in those days."

I think perhaps that Father Thion may have been among those who came also.

AND NOW A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR….pg. 2

Since the first of the year we have received an abundance of donated

items for the rummage sale. We continue to thank all the generous patrons who have donated in the past and present. Without you, the Rummage Sale would not have been as successful as it has been in the past several years. We hope that the trend continues. With that being said, we have had the same great group of ladies and gentlemen who pick up, sort, and price the donations. We are currently overwhelmed and are in need of more volunteers to help sort all that has been donated. Also, my name appears in the bulletin as the person to contact if you have need of someone to pick up the donations. This has led to a number of parishioners to assume that I am also continuing to take the lead as the coordinator of the Rummage Sale. After eight years, Ann nor I are able to continue in this capacity ~ although, we are more than willing to help. We ask that you pray on this and consider volunteering as a help or as the coordinator.

Thanks, Tom Schwartz

Home Missions Collection—April 22

There are many places right here in the United States and in its overseas dependencies where the Church is poor, communities are scattered, and priests are few. Money given to the Catholic Home Missions Appeal helps Catholic communities across

America service and thrive by underwriting evangelization, religious education, education for future priests, training for lay ministers, and poor parishes that would have to close their doors without outside help. The CHMA helps strengthen the Catholic Church in America.

17th Annual Golf Tournament

Our 17th Annual Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Mon-

day, APRIL 30 at Walden Lake Conroe Golf Club. Rainout date is

MAY 7. This event is held primarily to raise funds to support our high

school student scholarship program as well as support other charitable causes in our

area. Our successful 2017 tournament enabled us to award 7 scholarships last year!

There are several elements to raising funds in the event, the golfers entry fees, the

support of local businesses and people who sign up to help sponsor the event and the

auctioning off of many fantastic items donated by parishioners and merchants in the

area. We are asking our parishioners to assist us in having another successful

campaign in any of the above options they can participate in.

From Fr. Bill: A Suggestion for Holy Week .....

It’s Holy Week again; year after year we celebrate the same happenings of this last week of

Jesus’ life. There is a question I’d like to ask: “What can we do to make this Holy Week

unique?” How can we approach Jesus’ time of suffering which He endured both to teach us and to redeem us.

Perhaps one wonderful way to spend Holy Week would be to meditate on the holy places of Jesus’ last week,

for there we will find Him. Many of the great saints of the Church have said: “The person who seeks Jesus in

the Holy Places will find Him.” The prophet Jeremiah wrote that God has told us: “When you seek me, you

will find me” [Jer 29:11]. Let us now visit the Holy Places.

The slope of the Mount of Olives was a holy place. There Jesus wept over the city. He said that

Jerusalem and her people faced judgment and destruction. He warned the people: “Repent. Change your

ways! Follow me!” Today Jesus still weeps for those who do not heed His voice; they refuse to break with

sin. Jesus is still waiting, waiting for their confession, their repentance, their break with sin. He says “Turn

around. Come back to me!”

Gethsemane was another holy place. Just think of what happened there: Jesus knelt in agony while

His apostles slept. He asked: “Could you not watch and pray one hour with Me” [Matt 26:40]? He was

disappointed with His disciples. “They all forsook Him and fled” [Mk 4:50]. Today many disciples also

desert Jesus; let us pray that we will not disappoint Him.

The Kedron Valley was a valley of tears. A thousand years earlier, King David had shed tears there,

but he went as a free man. Now Jesus went in chains, being led like a lamb on the way to the slaughter. He

says to us: “Come follow Me.” We are assured that if we do follow Him, we will find Him as He promised.

Jesus simply stood there as He suffered the crowning and mocking. Why? Because of His love – as

St. Paul wrote “Love endures all things” [1 Cor 13:7]. Today we must walk the path of humility, suffering

insults and injustices for Christ. In that we will continue in His love; doing this, we will find Jesus. But there

was more – He was whipped, beaten and tormented. He suffered for the sins of mankind’s flesh. Why? To

redeem us who defile our bodies with sins. As Isaiah the prophet wrote: “by his stripes we are healed” [Is

53:5].

Our loving Lord was condemned and given the cross to carry. He accepted this unjust death sentence

on our behalf. Today, each of us should bring our sins to the cross, allowing God to judge us; in that we will

be pardoned. We must receive the cross as a sinner and accompany Jesus on the way. As He said: “If anyone

wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow Me” [Matt 16:24].

For Jesus that which we call the Way of the Cross was truly a street of sorrows. He went to Calvary

like a lamb being led to the slaughter, bearing that horrible cross, staggering under its weight. St. John wrote:

“bearing His cross Jesus went forth to the place of the skull” [9:17]. Jesus is looking for disciples today who

will consecrate themselves to the cross and accompany Him on the way.

Calvary was a holy place. And what was His response? “Father, forgive them ...” [Lk 23:34]. The

tree of death became the tree of life. There sinners find healing, experience redemption and become new

persons, made whole again. That cross reaches up to heaven and lifts sinners. Our Lord’s arms, stretched

wide as they were nailed there, reach out to the ends of the earth to call sinners back home to God. When we

bring our sins and guilt to the cross, we receive forgiveness. We are transformed by the forgiveness of the

Lord Who died for us.

Jesus died and was taken down from the cross; He was buried in the tomb – but that grave could not

hold Him; the crucified Lord became the Risen Lord. The defeated Jesus became the Victor. Today we are

threatened by death, sin, evil and the devil, but Jesus has power over all of these. If we call upon His name,

we will be delivered from sin, darkness and death.

Some might ask: “But how do you know you are forgiven?” For us, the sacrament of Confession is our

assurance. There, in His great love, Jesus reaches out and forgives us if we are truly repentant and call upon

His name. There we will be delivered from sin, darkness and death.

Holy week is a wonderful time to meditate on the holy places and to find Jesus. Let us come to the

Sacrament of Confession and receive the Lord’s forgiveness. In that we will truly find Jesus.

RCIA: Rite Of Christian Initiation for Adults

Are you not baptized and thinking you would like to become a Baptized Catholic? Are you thinking of becoming a Catholic? Do you

know someone interested in the Catholic Faith? Or you have been away from the Catholic Faith and would like to inquire on returning to the faith?

RCIA “The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” is the process of educational formation and spiritual

formation by which adults become full members in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

RCIA Inquiry classes have started on Sunday’s in the Family Life center. The RCIA schedule is posted

on St. Mary’s web site. www.smsj.org under “grow in faith”.

We invite all those who are not baptized, those who are baptized in other faiths and those baptized in

the catholic faith that would like to increase their knowledge in Catholicism.

Anyone interested in learning more about the possibility of joining the Roman Catholic Church or is

interested in increasing their adult faith formation are invited to contact RCIA director Donald A. Picard, Jr.

at [email protected] or 936-697-0195.

THE INTENTIONS OF THE HOLY FATHER FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL

the missions,’ the Holy Father asks that his monthly intentions be “the object of knowledgeable

Pope’s Universal Intention: For Those who have Responsibility in Economic Matters.

That economists may have the courage to reject any economy of exclusion and know how

to open new paths.

JOIN THE STITCHIN’ SISTERS

Are you interested in bringing back a lost art? Are you interested in having a good time with a great group of ladies? Think about joining the Stitchin’ Sisters. Hand quilting seems to be a lost art that we are trying to keep alive. We are a group of ladies that hand quilts three donation

quilts a year. One for the Plantersville Fire Department Auction, one for St. Joseph Bazaar Auction and one for St. Mary’s Bazaar Auction. If time permits between those quilts, we will quilt member’s quilt for a nominal fee. If you do not know how to quilt, we will do our best to help you out. We all have opinions! We can show you how to put up a quilt on a frame, how to mark it, how to quilt it, and how to finish it. We meet every Wednes-day from 9:30 to 2:00 at St. Joseph Hall. Bring your own

lunch. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! For more information,

contact Juli Murphy: at 936-206-0677 or

DEEPEN YOUR FAITH

THE TENTH COMMANDMENT: EMBRACE POVERY OF SPIRIT

YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR’S GOODS

In the study of the seventh commandment, we dealt with the visible acts of stealing and injustice. The tenth command

ment looks at the interior attitudes of greed and envy that lead us to steal and act unjustly. On the positive side, the tenth

commandment calls us to practice poverty of spirit and generosity of heart. These virtues liberate us from being slaves

to money and possessions. They enable us to have a preferential love for the poor and to be witnesses of justice and

peace in the world. They also enable us to adopt a simplicity of life that frees us from consumerism and helps us pre

serve God’s creation.

DOCTRINAL STATEMENTS ***The tenth commandment unfolds and completes the ninth, which is concerned with concupiscence of the flesh.

It forbids coveting the goods of another, as the root of theft, robbery, and fraud, which the seventh command

ment forbids. The tenth commandment concerns the intentions of the heart. (CCC, no. 2534)

***“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be” (Mt 6:21).

***Envy is an attitude of sadness at the sight of another’s prosperity. It can create a disordered desire to acquire

such goods, even by unjust means. Envy tightens the heart and subdues love. For this reason, envy is

considered a Capital Sin.

***The baptized person combats envy through goodwill, humility and abandonment to the providence of God.

Christ’s faithful “have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal 5:24); they are led by the Spirit and

follow his desires (CCC, no. 2555).

***The tenth commandment forbids greed and requires that envy be banished from the human heart

(CCC, nos. 2536 & 2538).

***The Christian practice of giving and sharing is a powerful alternative to greed and a positive contribution to a

peaceful and just society.

***Detachment from riches is necessary for entering the Kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are the poor in spirit”

(CCC, no. 2556).

***Envy often comes from pride; the baptized person should train himself to live in humility: “Would you like to

see God glorified by you? Then rejoice in your brother’s progress and you will immediately give the glory to

God. Because his servant could conquer envy by rejoicing in the merits of others, God will be praised”

(CCC, no. 2540, citing St. John Chrysostom, homiliae in ad Romanos, no. 71,5).

FOR DISCUSSION 1. While it is necessary to acquire earthly goods for the case and well-being of our families, there are forces

that motivate us to become overly attached to wealth. How does the media contribute to this?

What role does envy play in this drive toward the love of money?

2. What habits have you developed to help you have a healthy detachment from worldly goods?

How would generosity counter the tendency to be attached to material things?

MEDITATION The Church witnesses the fact that human dignity cannot be destroyed, whatever the situation of poverty, scorn, rejection

or powerlessness to which a human being has been reduced. The Church shows her solidarity with those who do not

count in a society by which they are rejected spiritually and sometimes even physically. She is particularly drawn with

maternal affection toward those children, through human wickedness, will never be brought forth from the womb to the

light of day, as also for the elderly, alone and abandoned. The special option for the poor manifests the universality of

the Church’s being and mission.

The above was taken from the US Catholic Catechism for Adults, Chapter 34, pages 447-448, 455-446.

The Catechism is available from the Corner Shop and is easy reading. Another valuable resource for what is in the

Catechism of the Catholic Church is a book from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, “365 Days to a Deeper Faith:

The Catechism of the Catholic Church in short daily readings”. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, as it is today,

was first published in 1992. The US Catholic Catechism for Adults was first published in 2005.
