Counseling Connection[2] September 2017 |  A Newsletter for Practicing Self-Care & Kindness

Stuck Making a Decision? How do you move forward in taking care of yourself if you are not able to make a decision? Not deciding can be detrimental to your well-being, it leaves you in a wishy-washy state of indecision.

The root (cis) of decision literally means “to cut off”. In other words, when you decide, you cut off all other choices. BUT you say YES to one thing.

Furthermore, you gain clarity when you say yes to one thing and no to the rest. You move forward and free up the brain space stuck in maybe.

Start by practicing making small decisions, like what to eat or which movie to see. What’s the worse case for choosing a sandwich? Then move on to bigger things. Go to the workshop or not?

Have a goal, mission or vision. Goals, missions and visions work like magic--they simplify the decision making process because they guide your choices. Does this help me complete my masters? Get in more family time?

Ask yourself questions about the decision. What do I want from this? What are my goals and does this align with that? Why do I want to do this or not? Go to unstuck.com for even more resources.

decision. (n.d.). Dictionary.com Unabridged . Retrieved July 20, 2017 from Dictionary.com website http://www.dictionary.com/browse/decision .

Get on the No TrainWhy is it so hard to say no? Why do we feel guilt when we tell someone we can’t do something? Think about the amazing results you get when you focus on one particular thing, instead of dozens of things.

Saying “no” is the other half of decision making. Remember, saying no to other things is saying a bigger yes to something more relevant and important in your life.

◾ Thank you for asking me, but I’m going to be busy with book club.

◾ This is a project I’m not able to give my full attention to.

◾ I’m not available, but thank you for asking.

May you choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.  -Nelson Mandela
