From the Principal Dear Parents, Classes 2014 Planning has begun on class formations for 2014. Over the next few weeks all teachers will be asking students which two buddies they would like to be in a class with for next year. Teachers will also be assessing a range of student data and results to ensure that classes are equitable in their formation. While every attempt is made to match students’ choices we sometimes place students with one choice, or in a class where in our judgement, they would be best placed. At all times the needs of the student drive the class placement. I expect, at this stage, we will have 14 classes. 2014 classes will be formed after all Kindergarten students are placed into classes, generally at the end of the 1 st week of term 1. We do this as Kindergarten student numbers are always uncertain, and can affect class formations. If there are any circumstances that you would like us to be aware of you may like to write/email us your requests; particularly in terms of what suits your child’s learning best. Recognition Over recent weeks there have been several notes made to the new finance/student wellbeing systems that are being implemented into public schools – LMBR – Learning Management and Business Reforms. We are one of 229 trial public schools, across the State, testing and refining the new systems. Shireen Gilmore has been outstanding in her zeal and dedication to getting the systems correct for our school. The work has been very complex, and demanding. Shireen has given much of her own time. Shireen, well done – an outstanding job, and as you say “All I want to do is the best for our school”. Thank you. Much appreciated. From the Principal

Dear Parents, Classes 2014 Planning has begun on class formations for 2014. 2014 classes will be formed after all Kindergarten students are placed into classes, generally at the end of the 1

st week of term 1.

ATTENDANCE AWARD

Congratulations

2E You had the best attendance at our school

last week.

It’s cool to be at our school

If a child misses an average of nine days per term, (that's less than one day a week) during their primary school years,

they would have missed a whole year of learning by the time they reach Year 7. To give your child the best chance

for success at school you need to send them every day!

REGULAR ATTENDANCE + A POSITIVE ATTITUDE = GOOD RESULTS

IT’S COOL TO BE AT SCHOOL

Opera House Choir represents our school once again.

Bellingen Public School has a clear record, being included in the Festival Of Choral Music each year they have auditioned. This is an indicator that our Kinder to Yr 6 choir programme sees results, fostering a group of children with most special voices and a love of singing. This year 68 children auditioned for the choir but sadly we are only allocated 32 places. I made a special effort to include many of the extra fine singers as soloists in our musical. The opportunity to sing in a choir of 700 in the magnificent concert hall of the Sydney Opera House is wondrous. For each child performing, a beautiful memory for life is created. These children will always know that to perform with such perfection takes practice and the rewards of this practice is a tight performance that is spine tingling both for the actual singers and their loved ones in the audience. Our excursion was a hoot from beginning to end and our parent helpers were a huge part of the enjoyment. I was lucky enough to

share the entertainment with Mrs Pregnell, Shane Brightwell, Peter Rowe, Pauline Williamson, Sandra Ruming, Tamasin Pepper, Toni Lawson, Cindy and Dean Besley and Padraig Storm. Parents came to all activities and students moved about in small safe groups. I loved to see the respect our students showed to our parent helpers and their friendliness to all people they met. Highlights of the excursion were;

our impromptu performance for the bowlers in Que.

our Ghost Hosts and the many gruesome stories they shared with us from around the Rocks Area. It sure made us glad to be living in this century!

the Dugong at the Sydney Aquarium.

the first glance into the concert hall.

the first song sung in rehearsal where one little voice joined many hundreds.. and the sound!!!!

finding your parent in a sea of 2,000 audience members.

the excitement of knowing parents will be blown away by your sound in the evening concert.

the number of Bellingen families in Sydney for this occasion.

walking walking and more walking, all those steps.

the quiz in the bus on our return trip.

fabulous parents.

darling children, creating a beautiful memory for Ms Scott. Liz Scott

Chickenpox Alert

Students in classes 3MW, 2J, K/1 Yellow & 1B have been diagnosed with ChickenPox. Symptons are: sudden onset of slight fever, runny nose, feeling generally unwell and a skin rash. The rash usually begins as small lumps that turn into blisters and then scabs. The rash appears over 3 to 4 days. Symptons usually occur 2 weeks after exposure to the virus. Students are to be excluded till all blisters have dried. This is usually 5 days. Anyone who has not had chickenpox or been vaccinated in the past can get chickenpox.

This week’s Value is

Itegrity Being consistently honest and trustworthy In school communities, evidence of this value includes:

open and transparent decision making processes

consistent school policies and actions. In classrooms, evidence of this value includes:

trusting others to work independently

doing what you say you will do

teachers mark students work consistently to agreed standards

clearly explaining and enforcing rules about plagiarism.

“Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity.” W. Clement Stone

IT’S COOL TO BE AT SCHOOL All absences require a note

or phone call explaining why your child has been away from school.

A Poem on Flying by Evy Cooper

I heard bangs and growls of thunder Cracks and flashes of lightning The wisest trees tried to fly but the ancient soil made them hold their ground The life giving rain settled the anxious creatures of the ground Yet increased the power of the storm. I ran and as I ran I felt all of the storms power. I may have looked to you like I was running, yet in my head I was flying with the storm.

Canteen News

Even though we are still some four weeks away from summer we are already experiencing summer weather, especially the temperature. To make life a little more comfortable, the canteen will bring in a summer treat earlier this season. I am writing, of course, about frozen orange pieces. These will be available in the canteen for 10 cents each from this week. I am sure that our thermally suffering cherubs will find these refreshing, as long as stocks last. The flavoured pie weekly special was extraordinarily popular. For this reason the special will be continued for one more week. This will be the last chance to get these pies from the canteen. Not the usual meat pies, which will still be available, but a selection of different flavoured pies. These flavours will be, shepherd’s pie, cheese and bacon, curry and “Ned Kelly” (cheese, bacon and egg). The special, as usual will be on Thursday and Friday for $3.50 or $5.00 with a drink. Year 6 Farewell

It's time that we frock up and dress to the nines for the Year 6 farewell. However, before that we need to think about the setup. If there are any parents or carers that are interested in helping out with organisation or setting up then please contact me directly or via the school. Any and all help is much appreciated. Also, if there are any first day photos or early

school photos lying around of your Year 6 student then please scan and email to me or bring them in, as I would like to create a powerpoint presentation for the night. Thank you and I look forward to working with you all! Contact: [email protected] attention Troy Troy Metcalf
