Organization has assisted thousandsof students and others

BY STANLEY O. WILLIFORDOW EDITOR

If you or someone you know has been blessed tobe one of the more than 18,000 youths who havebeen helped by the 100 Black Men of Los Angeles’Young Black Scholars (YSB) program over the pastyears, you understand the importance of the orga-nization’s 30th anniversary gala on Oct. 21.

The event is being held at the J.W. Marriott LosAngeles at L.A. Live downtown. Among the hon-orees include Laker great Earvin “Magic” Johnson(Man of the Year), Northrop Grumman executiveSandra Evers-Manly (Woman of the Year), entre-preneur-entertainer Marla Gibbs (LifetimeAchievement Award), UCLA basketball greatWalter Hazzard (Lifetime Achievement Award),entrepreneur Fred A. Calloway (SpecialAchievement Award), Los Angeles County FireChief Daryl L. Osby (Special Achievement Award)and AEG executive vice president Kevin McDowell(Community Partner Award).

The affair will be hosted by Chris Schauble,KTLA morning news co-anchor, and 10-timeGrammy award winner Chaka Khan will providespecial entertainment.

It is at such galas that 100 Black Men raise fundsto carry on their community programs like YoungBlack Scholars. Typical YBS success stories includethe following:

Clifton Dorsey, who began being mentoredthrough YBS in 1996 during his freshman year inhigh school, said his experience with 100 BlackMen mentorship programs was “invaluable, as itgave me an opportunity to see things that until thattime I had never seen before: Black men andwomen in business suits that were well-spoken,ambitious and professional. These images increasedmy self-worth, and through participating in eventslike the YBS Super Quiz, I gained a more profoundsense of my cultural heritage.”

Dorsey is a professor of political science andAmerican government at Westwood College and isalso a third-year law student at Southwestern LawSchool. He holds both a bachelor’s and a master’sdegree in political science from California StateUniversity, Long Beach. He participated in theRalph Bunche Summer Institute at Duke Universityin 2003 and is a member of both the NationalPolitical Science Honor Society and the NationalBlack Law Student Association.

“Words cannot express the level of gratitude andthanks I owe to the 100 Black Men of Los Angeles,”said Dorsey. “This distinguished organizationplayed an integral part in my life at a pivotal time.”

Another “alumnus” of the organization’s YoungBlack Scholars program extols the mentors andadvisers who took the time to care about his aca-demic development.

“As a high school student,” said Henry Delu, “Iremember getting up early on the weekends to visita different college each month. YBS has always cre-ated a successful program that added to my aca-demic growth.”

Delu went on to further his education by obtain-

ing a bachelor’s degree in molecular cell biology atUC Berkeley, and a master’s in medical sciencefrom Harvard University. He is currently pursuing adoctorate in pharmacy at the University ofSouthern California.

Denette Brewer-Boyd indicated that YoungBlack Scholars may have contributed to her aca-demic salvation, although she was already enrolledin a prestigious college-prep school

“My story was kind of unique because I went toa college-prep school where there were very fewBlacks, but the expectation was that everybody goesto college,” she said. “The assumption would be thatwe didn’t have any barriers, but because of theracial dynamics at the school, we actually did.

“For example, a lot of students of color were dis-couraged from applying to prestigious four-yearuniversities, despite the fact that we were in the

right courses to apply and had the right GPAs. Wemet the requirements.

“In my senior year, my college counselor dis-couraged me from applying to all my collegeoptions and tried to persuade me to explore otheroptions aside from the choices I had in mind,” saidBrewer-Boyd. “My experience was not unique.”

However, through the encouragement of men-tors from Young Black Scholars, Brewer-Boyd said,“I got into every school I applied to.” She graduatedfrom UCLA in 1994, and went on to get a master’sin political science from California State UniversityDominguez Hills, and is now in the process ofapplying to study for a doctorate.

Qiana Conley, a 1999 graduate of USC with abachelor’s in business administration, is presentlydeveloping a music, brands and lifestyle companycalled Cue Creative. She has an extensive back-

ground in the music field, and has worked on thealbums and campaigns of such superstars asMichael Jackson and Jennifer Lopez.

The stories of success go on, but 100 Black Menwas not only established to assist in the field of edu-cation and mentoring but in health and wellnessand economic development, according to Jewett L.Walker Jr., president and chairman of the board.

Walker, the organization’s 12th president, issomewhat of an anomaly. He is a political consult-ant who has worked on the campaigns of suchnotable local politicians as Mervyn Dymally,Bernard Parks, Marguerite LaMotte, RockyDelgadillo, Roosevelt Dorn and others. However, healso holds a master of divinity degree and is anassociate minister at True Vine Baptist Church inInglewood, where he is in charge of church admin-istration.

Although 100 Black Men of Los Angeles Inc.was formed in 1981, the national organizationbegan its formative period in New York in 1963with such notable leaders as David Dinkins, RobertMangum, Dr. William Hayling, Nathaniel GoldstonIII, Livingston Wingate, Andrew Hatcher, andJackie Robinson.

Hayling relocated to Newark, New Jersey, and“sought to replicate the 100’s impact in that area.” In1976, he formed the 100 Black Men of New Jersey.“A movement had been born,” says the organiza-tion’s website. “Men across the country began toform 100 Black Men organizations to leverage theircollective talents and resources. Chapters wereformed in Los Angeles, Indianapolis, St. Louis,Pittsburgh, Atlanta, San Francisco/Oakland BayArea, Nassau/Suffolk, Alton, and Sacramento.”

Hayling later became the first president of theLos Angeles chapter. Attorney Donald Lancasterwas the last, just before Walker. Our WeeklyColumnist Anthony Asadullah Samad has alsoserved as president.

“The goal was to identify 100 men to help ourcommunity, and so they found professional Blacksin all different careers to help to meet the needs ofour community,” said Walker. “What we wantedwere people in different areas of expertise—archi-tects, engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants andso forth.

“The idea was that we could share our expertisenot only with young people, but it would help theorganization be better,” he said. “If we wanted to dosomething in a particular area, people in that arecould take the lead.”

There was another important aspect, accordingto Walker, which was “to bring men from variouseducational backgrounds together to help solvesome of the problems in our community. We want-ed to deal with professional men who had someeconomics behind them.”

Those who have benefited from 100 Black Menprograms have glommed onto the idea of payingtheir success forward, to give back what they havelearned from the organization.

“Once we became college students, YBS alumniwere encouraged to start YBS college chapters onour college campus,” said Brewer-Boyd. “We wereinvited back as panelists and tutors for high schoolevents. I volunteered in the original YBS Westwoodoffice for years as an undergraduate and helpedcoordinate the high school math tutorial programon Saturdays on the USC campus. The organizationstill calls on us to volunteer 20-plus years later, andI for one, am thrilled to continue to support itsefforts.”

African American women face greater risk

BY JENNIFER THOMPSON OW STAFF WRITER

Krystal Toliver, 22, and Bridgette Bryant, 24, neverthought much about the strong impact Breast Cancerhad on society until it affected them personally.

Toliver, lost her mother and grandmother withinfour years of one another after breast cancer diagnosis. Her mother, Dorcas Toliver, died in July 2007 and hergrandmother, Glenda Callegari, died in February 2011.

Toliver’s mother died three weeks after being diag-nosed, and her grandmother died two months afterbeing diagnosed. Both were diagnosed at the mostadvanced point in the course of the disease, stagefour, and their bodies would not respond to any ofthe treatments.

With her mom dying at age 46 and her grand-mother at 66, Toliver has grown to realize there is noage limit when it comes to diagnosing breast cancer.“A lot of women do not like to talk about breast can-cer until it affects someone close to them, then theybegan to see it is a major issue. We must be aware ofour bodies as women and make changes so that wecan decrease incidence rates among White womenand decrease mortality rates among AfricanAmerican women,” says Toliver.

Since the passing of her mother and grandmother,Toliver said she has become traumatized at the idea ofloosing both her mother and grandmother so close toeach other. “I am really afraid to go to the doctor aboutanything, because I’m afraid that I will receive badnews. I don’t go as regular as I should,” says Toliver.

As a public health major, she is informed abouthow important it is to practice and maintain goodhealth; she promotes it to others but is afraid to do it

for herself. With her mother and her grandmother serving as

the backbone of her family, Toliver’s perspective onlife has drastically changed. She had to grow up fasterthan expected, because she has to be there for heryounger brother. She also feels the pressure of notshowing any signs of weakness, but feels compelledto be strong for the rest of her family. “I would defi-nitely say that it has made me a stronger woman, Ifeel like I can take on any challenge, because nothingis worse than losing a mother and a grandmother. Ihave prayed a lot and humbled myself,” says Toliver.

Bryant’s, grandmother, Josephine Bryant, passedaway on August 28, 2010, and Bryant said she hadnot understood the reality of breast cancer and theimpacts it has on women’s lives, particularly AfricanAmerican women, until she experienced the death ofher grandmother.

Bryant’s grandmother was diagnosed a year andsix months before she passed away, and the tumorsassociated with breast cancer made it difficult for herto respond to the treatment.

“I really thought nothing about it until my grand-mother was diagnosed and I saw what she wentthrough. It became real to me that so many womenare dying of this particular cancer,” says Bryant.

Understanding the reality of breast cancer afterthe death of her grandmother, made Bryant believe itis important for her to check and be aware of thesymptoms for of the disease, but she explains she stillhasn’t changed her health habits. “Cysts run in myfamily, so I do a self examination once in a while butnot as often as I should,” says Bryant.

African American women are especially vulnera-ble to breast cancer compared to other ethnicities. When looking at the difference between AfricanAmerican women and Caucasian women, statisticsshow that not as many African American are diag-nosed with breast cancer compared to Caucasianwomen, but African American women tend to diefrom it sooner for different reasons. These include nothaving access to healthcare, and lacking knowledge ofthings to practice to prevent and stop it before itbecomes more aggressive and difficult to treat.

The American Cancer Society says that 90 percentof White women who are diagnosed with breast can-cer will live at least five years, but only 76 percent ofBlack women with breast cancer will live that long.Five years is considered a pivotal mark for a long-term cancer survivor.

The average age suggested by physicians for mam-

mograms may be 50, but according to the AmericanCancer Society, most doctors believe that early detec-tion tests for breast cancer can save many thousandsof lives each year. The American Cancer Society alsoprovides guidelines for the early detection of breastcancer, such as using mammograms, self-examina-tions, and clinical breast exams, which has improvedthe chances that breast cancer can be diagnosed at anearly stage and treated successfully.

Common risk factors that women should considerare the age of first menstruation and menopause, anda family history of the disease. These are compoundedby irregularly doing check ups or not getting a clinicalbreast exam (CBE), which is a complement to mam-mograms and an opportunity for women and theirdoctor or nurse to discuss changes in their breasts.

A clinical breast examination (CBE), which is aphysical examination of the breast done by a healthprofessional without the use of a machine, is highlyrecommended for women starting in their 20s andgoing into their 50s, to prevent an initial diagnosisafter the cells have become abnormal forming lumpsand tumors which are difficult to treat.

Waiting to be checked after you have felt lumpsin your breast may be too late; it is better to bechecked regularly to catch any potentially cancerouslumps early. Women, who may not have access tohealthcare, can always practice a self-breast exami-nation at home.

Banks slammed for economic woes

BY GREGG REESEOW CONTRIBUTOR

The downtown area got a dose of 1960s activismlast Thursday, when a coalition of protesters includ-ing members of the Alliance of Californians ofCommunity Empowerment (ACCE), the ServiceEmployees International Union (SEIU), along withOccupy LA, descended upon a branch of ChaseBank.

After gathering at the California Plaza at 350 S.Grand Ave., a crowd of at least 2,000 people carryingplacards and signs trekked through the skyscrapersdotting Bunker Hill, down the escalator to FlowerStreet and on to the Bank of America at Seventh andFigueroa Streets, where they presented a cashier withan oversized check for $673 billion.

The check, endorsed to “the People of California,”was meant to be symbolic of the costs generated bythe financial industry at the expense of the state’s citi-zens, particularly homeowners.

After staging a sit-in, about 10 protesters werearrested for trespassing. The whole affair wasplanned by Refund California, a consortium of

groups coordinated to address the economic hard-ships afflicting the masses.

Thursday’s events were part of a series of protestsaimed at highlighting the part banks have played inthe decimation of the nation’s communities, saidPeggy Mears of ACCE. In the wake of the devastationthey’ve caused, she added that these financial con-cerns are attempting to correct the problems they ini-tiated by further victimizing those suffering theworst.

“The banks are trying to rebuild the economy onthe backs of the ‘99ers’ (the middle and workingclass),” she said.

Unlike similar demonstrations across the country, especially in New York’s Wall Street financial district(where several hundred were arrested amid allega-tions of police abuse and the use of pepper spray andtear gas), the downtown L.A. demonstrations anddetainments were conducted without incident, withno animosity reported by police or protesters.

The turnout of 2,000-2,500 people vastly exceededorganizers’ expectations of perhaps several hundredprotesters, and Mears expressed complete satisfactionwith the protest results, noting that organizers suc-cessfully brought together people from every walk oflife, representing “diversity at its finest.”

The Thursday demonstration was one of a num-ber of related events. The pervious Wednesday, activists gathered in front of the Westwood home of aprominent banking official, and on Monday, OccupyLA members established a “tent city” adjacent to CityHall.

In another action, Mears and her colleagues atACCE applauded the decision by Attorney GeneralKamala Harris to shun the rest of the nation’s multi-state effort to negotiate a relief settlement with mort-

gage servicers (the state of New York has since pulledout, as well).

In an excerpt from a press release explaining herchoice to forego the settlement her fellow attorneysgeneral were seeking, Harris wrote that “the reliefcontemplated would allow too few California home-owners to stay in their homes.”

Mears concurs, saying that she and the rest of theACCE staffers “felt that it (the settlement) wouldhave gone too easy on the banks.”

At the state level, the ACCE activist said, pro-grams like “Keep Your Home California” are goodideas, but the banks don’t participate effectively, andthe eligibility requirements are too difficult.Consequently, very few homeowners are involved, which defeats the purpose of the program.

Reports of mass dissatisfaction and wide-scaleeconomically based protests are coming from aroundthe globe as well, demonstrated by the scores whomarched across Spain to occupy Madrid in late July,in the wake of European Union’s bailout of Greece.Rumblings of a planned takeover of the LondonStock Exchange to be organized via Facebook satu-rated the media.

United Kingdom-based activists are manifestingtheir own backlash against what they consider theelites who oppress them by taking up the “99 per-cent” rhetoric from their Yankee counterparts.Political pundits have likened this to the “ArabSpring” movement that manifested itself throughoutthe Middle Eastern in the early part of this year.

In any event, a tidy solution to this strife is not yeton the horizon, as the disgruntled continue to mobi-lize, with Mears summing up their conviction thusly:

“We’re about the truth, and the truth stands on itsown.”

With 5 million Americans under legalsupervision, how do you avoid crossingthe fraternization line?

BY CYNTHIA E. GRIFFINOW MANAGING EDITOR

“Freeway” Ricky Ross on Tuesday faced a situa-tion that could increasingly happen to ex-felons—hewas called before a federal judge in San Diego oncharges by his supervising parole officer that he“associated” with ex-felons, a direct violation of hisconditions of release.

Ironically, the so-called association was not forconspiring to commit a crime but instead Ross said itwas for the work he has been doing for the last twoyears to help youth and others in the communityunderstand the downside to the bling that was his lifeas the man behind a multimillion drug empire.

“While I was in prison, I saw what Tookie didwith the children’s books and I saw him fight for hislife.

“. . . guys came to me when I was in prison and

said ‘I wanted to be just like you.’ I started thinkingabout them wanting to be like me, and said that’scrazy; I got a life sentence (this was eventuallyreduced to 20 years.)

“. . . I decided to use my experiences to make abetter life for others,” explained Ross.

He began this re-education process for himselfabout 10 years before his release from federal prison. Then he began talking to the young men in prisonand giving them books to read. He also created alibrary and book club while in prison.

Business books were one of Ross’ passion. “They said I was the Walmart of crack cocaine

and ran my business like McDonalds. So I wanted toknow what I had in common with Walmart andMcdonalds,” recalled Ross.

“I saw myself in these guys,” said Ross, adding thatreading about their stories, convinced the LosAngeles resident he needed to turn himself into abusiness.

Ross said his first parole officer knew exactly whathe was doing.

“I don’t know this for sure, but I think they feltshe was letting me do too much,” Ross speculated

about why they gave him another supervising officerwho immediately began changing the rules and mak-ing it more difficult for him to go out speaking.

Eventually, this new supervising agent, wrote Rossup for “associating with felons.” But Ross denies thathaving brief conversations with ex-felons at his vari-ous speaking engagements is association.

He does acknowledge that getting an occasionalphone call from inmates he helped while in custodyis a little stickier, but still insisted that he was notassociating with felons.

Ross also contended that with the high number ofBlack men who have and are part of the criminal jus-tice system, it can be very difficult to avoid fraterniz-

ing with other felons.Nicole Porter, state advocacy coordinator with the

Sentencing Project in Washington, D.C., calls thischallenge a collateral consequence.

“It’s problematic given the large number of (peo-ple) connected to the criminal justice system,” Portersaid. It’s also a challenge given some of the conditionsof release that some formerly incarcerated face, suchas life-time parole.

According to the United States Bureau of Justice, there are more than 5 million people under super-vised release, probation or parole; in California thereare 106,035 on parole.

The process for revocation release is different as afederal ex-con. Instead of going before a state paroleboard the agent writes up a report requesting revoca-tion, and sends it to a judge. The former inmate iscalled into court for a hearing and has the opportuni-ty to accept or deny the charge.

If the charges are denied, a court date is set andthe judge will hear evidence then make a decision.

According to federal sources, judges have widelatitude: they can continue the supervised release.Lock up an individual or even release them fromsupervision. They can also declare the complaint anon-issue.

In Ross’ case, the judge told the two sides twowork out their differences, because she did not thinkit made sense to put him back in custody for minorinfractions.

A question of association

CAAM’s annual gala is about collectingmoney and friends

BY CYNTHIA E. GRIFFINOW MANAGING EDITOR

At this time of the year, Charmaine Jefferson isunder no allusion about what her job is.

“My job is to put my hands (deep) in your pocketand pull out something big.”

Although drolly humorous, Jefferson, who is exec-utive director of the California African AmericanMuseum (CAAM) in Exposition Park, is quite seri-ous. The-state supported cultural institution will hostits eighth fundraiser Saturday and Sunday, “An ArtfulEvening at CAAM,” and the money collected pro-vides approximately one-quarter of the museum’sannual budget.

In addition to allowing the museum to keep itsadmission as well as most of the workshops, lecturesand performances it produces free, the funding gen-erated by this annual event also underwrites the costof the CAAM Young Docent program.

Jefferson said that program started out with fiveyoung people as a summer effort to employ highschool students in the arts, and this year had 54 par-ticipants including a number who had graduated andcome back.

Even though Jefferson is seeking big money at thegala, CAAM puts on a show well worth the sacrifice. This year the event, which will begin Saturday at 6p.m., will honor three world-renowned individualswho live locally.

This year musician Herbie Hancock, dancer/cho-reographer Donald McKayle and artist Betye Saarwill be the recipients of the first life-time achieve-

ment awards from CAAM.“. . . It’s not about stars; its about the accomplish-

ments of people you know and the people you don’tknow,” explained Jefferson about how the honoreeswere selected. This year is about their tremendousachievements. And they are still active, workingartists. None of them are resting on what they havedone in the past. They are still creating today.”

This years’ program will feature a tribute toHancock by the group Naturally 7, who use theirvoices to create sounds reminiscent of instruments inthe tradition of Bobby McFerrin. McKayle’s muse willalso create a special dance performance for him, andCAAM will honor Saar by purchasing one of her artworks.

Jefferson said this year the gala weekend will beextended by the presentation of a full concert featur-ing Naturally 7 which will take place Sunday at 7 p.m.at the museum. Tickets are $40.

There is also an special undercurrent that is partof CAAM’s fundraiser this year.

“It’s also a friendraiser,” said the executive director, who added that she will use part of the evening tobring guests current about what the museum isdoing. One of key tasks is positioning the institutionto buy the rest of the Golden State Mutual Collection, once litigation between the state and the building’snew owner has been settled.

Jefferson estimates it would not take more than$100,000 to purchase the 121 unsold works stillremaining in the collection (excluding the murals)and is hoping to cultivate the kind of friends at thefundraiser who can see the value in providing CAAMwith the resources to make such a purchase.

For information on the fundraiser, visit the muse-um’s web site at www.caamuseum.org or call (213)744-7432.

Praying for peace in JerusalemDavid Siegel, consul general of Israel in Los Angeles, left, with Angel Evans, CEO of Crenshaw Christian Center,

Siegel assumed the consul general post in August 2011, serving as thesenior representative of the state of Israel to the Southwestern United States. He referenced the longevity of thealliance between the African American and Jewish communities and reminded the audience of the civil rightsstruggle in Israel. “As the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King said, we have to strive every day to be one under God,” saidSiegel. “The African American movement was one of the first to support the idea of a Jewish state.” The firstSunday of every October is globally celebrated as The Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem. DISTRICT OF COLUMBIAThe National Veterans Coalitionrecently added a twist to its 150thanniversary celebration of the start ofthe Civil War by honoring Black par-ticipation in the iconic battle with apresentation on African Americanservice and a screening of the block-buster movie, “Glory.” The event, heldat the University of the District ofColumbia, is part of an ongoing community outreach by theCoalition to publicize African American military involvement. The group’s key focus is obtaining an honorary posthumouspromotion of Col. Charles Young to brigadier general. He wasdenied the honor because of the color of his skin and, at thetime of his death in 1922, was the highest ranking Black manin the United States military. “It’s vital to recognize the contri-butions of Black soldiers in the defense of the nation; it’s a partof American history,” said Charles Blatcher III, chairman of theVeterans Coalition. “Our goal in sponsoring this event is three-fold. First, we are acknowledging the occasion of AfricanAmerican participation in the Civil War. Second, the occasionoffered the opportunity to introduce or re-introduce the impor-tance of learning the facts and preserving our history. Third, this occasion was appropriate in providing us the opportunityto publicly embrace the National Museum of African AmericanHistory and Culture.” The Coalition, along with theCongressional Black Caucus Veterans Brain Trust and theUniversity of the District of Columbia, sponsored the event.

Unfortunately, there are long-term health risks associated with postponingoral care.” Austin will make an appearance at the New YorkPublic Library 96th Street Branch on Oct. 22 to further discussthe importance of good dental hygiene.

NATIONALThe National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL)recently held its annual Black America’s Dialogue on HealthConference at the Indiana state capitol. This year’s topic,“Disease Prevention Through Transformative Living,” focusedon the link between spiritual, physical, and mental health; whatpractitioners can do to coordinate prevention and care; andhow legislators can support their efforts. African Americanssuffer from a disproportionate percentage of chronic diseaseswhen compared to the rest of the American population. Yet,dozens of studies have revealed the positive impact the AfricanAmerican church, as an institution, has often had on the lengthand quality of life for regular attendees. Researchers havefound that regular religious attendance extends lifespan by fiveto seven years for the overall American population and up to 14years for African American men. Cain-ing the worldbut losing the soul

BY ANTHONY ASADULLAHSAMADOW CONTRIBUTOR

Every decade or so, someunconscious Negro steps forward into the nationalspotlight to demonstrate how insane he can sound intrying to attract the support or affinity of White folkby making the most outrageous and outlandish state-ments. It’s usually when some conservative initiativeis in play. This year, it’s the conservative movement’sblackface response to President Barack Obama.Watching the Republican debates, businessmanHerman Cain first came off as a rational, reasonablepragmatist with a sensible approach to taxation (9-9-9 flat tax plan), which got the nation’s ear.

Other than that, nothing distinguished him fromthe rest of the “RAT Pack,” RAT being an acronymfor “Republican’s Anti-Obama Trial.” Cain placed sec-ond in a couple of straw polls, then proceeded to losehis mind. This week, Cain made the comment that“Racism in this country today doesn’t hold anybodyback in a big way.” He acknowledges that there aresome racist elements in the society, but suggests thatthe so-called level playing field is only skewed duringweak economies.

Cain can’t be that unconscious! Public Enemy’sChuck D once asked, “What sucka stole the soul?”You have to wonder who stole Cain’s.

With that statement, he just earned my nomina-tion for Bootlicker of the Year. Only a fool wouldbelieve that the vestiges of racial discrimination arenot only present in today’s society, but some of thedisparities they created are just as wide as they werenearly 60 years ago. Just because a few more are doingbetter doesn’t mean the masses are. That’s why theBlack bourgeoisie who escape the realities of Blackmisery have never been able to speak for the masses.

Zora Neale Hurston warned us of piousness asso-ciated false intellectualism. During the HarlemRenaissance, Hurston suggested that the Negrotarians(Whites who studied, followed and shared Black cul-

ture) and the Niggerati (Black elites who shared theculture largely among Whites) would distort andmisrepresent the racial complexities of theRenaissance movement if allowed.

That’s exactly what we see today. Well-to-doBlacks, like former BET owner Bob Johnson andGodfather Pizza giant Herman Cain, distort and mis-represent the racial complexities of American culture. To dismiss the reality of racism, after knowing thesting of racism, to win an election or curry favor witha White electorate suggests you have no conscienceabout who you step on to get to where you want togo. Cain is a Morehouse graduate who came up inthe civil rights era, but somewhere along the waysomeone stole the soul.

No, racism is no longer by commission, but it’scertainly in evidence by omission, as Blacks are dis-proportionately left out of social and economic main-stream. It has nothing to do with holding them back, and everything to do with leaving them behind.Blacks are expected to pull themselves up without arope, and America won’t throw us one, even thoughthey throw others one everyday.

Economic stimuli and corporate bailouts are ropesthrown to the wealthy. Years ago, Blacks were told to“pull yourselves up by your own bootstraps"…even ifyou didn’t have boots. Another Negro spewed thesame line as Cain, suggesting that there was no suchthing as racism. His name is Ward Connerly and hewas the face of the anti-affirmative action movementin America. It led to the elimination of affirmativeaction in many states. We have witnessed, firsthand, what the absence of conscience can do. It can makeyou lose your mind, forget the truth and steal theintegrity of a true movement.

Twenty years ago this week, America sought toconfirm the most unconscious Black man inAmerican history, Clarence Thomas, when a sister ofconscience, Anita Hill, stood up and suggested thatThomas was not fit of mind to serve on the SupremeCourt. We have not only found out that he wasn’t fitof mind, but he is out of his mind, and is absolutelysoulless when it comes to the racial experience thatpositioned him to be where he is. Clarence Thomas isthe “Who Stole the Soul” poster boy for where youcan land if you’re willing to say and do anything, including put down your own people.

Unemployment is a realityfor one-third of Blacks

BY JULIANNE MALVEAUX TRICE-EDNEY NEWS WIRE

The first Friday of themonth is a day when econo-mists like me are riveted to thenews. We want to know what’s up with the unem-ployment rate, and with the changes that have takenplace in the last month. Last week, our nation learnedthat we treaded water. The unemployment rateremained at a high of 9.1 percent, 8 percent forWhite folks, and 16 percent for Black folks.

Some pundits were jazzed at the rates, thinking

that they meant we are doing OK. What’s OK? Thereal unemployment rate for African Americans isclose to 30 percent.

This means that a third of the Black world is notworking. This means that there are too many Blackfolk who are tripping. This means that too many aremanaging pain. And with the Congress ignoring thatreality and failing to offer the relief via the jobs bill, this means that nobody cares.

I hear from people all the time. Their stories areheart-rending. They talk about the lives they oncehad, and the lives they now have. Once upon a time, they had homes, mortgages and opportunities. Nowthey have lost jobs, homes, and their opportunitieshave faded. They are the folk who stand in the mid-dle of the statistics. We know the numbers, but wedon’t know their pain.

The pain is more acute for African Americansthan it is for others. President Barack Obama has notfully addressed that, although his spirited anger at therecent Congressional Black Caucus dinner was a greatstep in the right direction. Still, I have to think that if

there were a crisis in Appalachia or in New Mexico, there would be a more invigorated response. Instead,Black folks are unemployed and nobody really cares.

Go to church and count it out. If there are threepeople huddled over water, one of them is unem-ployed. If there are three people passing out pro-grams, one of them is unemployed. If there are threepeople, or four, or five, or six, this pox called unem-ployment has visited them. Who is he, who is she?Mother, father, brother. Sister, somebody whobrought a quarter to the table, and the quarter isn’tthere, not anymore.

In order to just stay even, our nation needs togenerate 275,000 jobs each month. Last month, amonth where some celebrated our “progress,” wegenerated just 103,000 jobs. We aren’t moving ahead,we are falling behind. Our reality is that the jobsmarket is broken and nobody wants to fix it.

Instead, we see a nation at political gridlock. Thecongressional Republicans don’t want to pass thepresident’s jobs bill, and they have offered few alter-natives. So we sit and wait to see if anyone will break

the gridlock that keeps our legislators from movingforward.

This is drama, it is trauma, it is bless you, mama, cause it is overtime for there to be some forwardmovement.

Perhaps this is not an issue for those whose con-stituency is enjoying a 9.1 percent unemploymentrate. But there are too many who are experiencingmuch more than that. Throw a stone into the Blackcommunity. See who it hits. It is one in three, one inthree, one in three. What that means is that the poxcalled unemployment affects everyone. When thereality of worklessness hits so many, the fact is that itaffects us all.

The numbers come out every first Friday. Thereality visits our community each and every day. Onein three adult African Americans cannot find work. This is a depression-level unemployment rate. Peopleare hurting, but nobody really cares. One in three. One in three. One in three.

The political reality of places to go,things to do in L.A.

BY DAVID L. HORNEOW CONTRIBUTOR

Ahhh, Los Angeles. The citythat does eventually sleep, although fitfully and alwaysjumpy to start back up againand get back into it—anotherbalmy day to play.

One thing about L.A. is that there is always a widediversity of things to do and get into, good or bad.October is one of those exhausting, breathlessmonths when everyday there just seems to be somuch stuff going on, too much for one tired bodyand soul.

For example, last week, and continuing throughthis month, the Pacific Standard Time Art exhibit,“L.A. Rebellion: Creating a New Black Cinema,” is amasterful collaboration of 60-odd sites, anchored bythe Armand Hammer Museum, designed to display adizzying variety of artistic creativity—much of it littleknown Black filmmaking, plays, and other sojournswith the Muse from 1945-1980.

CSUN is doing a great photographic exhibit ofvisuals from a Black camera wizard that depicts civilrights oddities and other unusual angles.

The Good Jobs L.A. protesters will be out in forceover the U.S. Congress refusal to pass the president’sJobs Act, and, of course, the annual Taste of Soul isback this weekend for its yearly seizure of attentionon Crenshaw Boulevard—food, fun and merrimentgalore.

We are not New York, but we are definitely L.A.,and we know how to play. Miles and miles of realculture blossoming alongside and even inside of thesurf, sand and gridlocked freeways.

So finding 10 young South African visitors alight-ing from British Airways Wednesday was no big deal.L.A. brings them in everyday, from all over. But thenthere were others from Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania andSenegal, along with a well-regarded Ambassador tothe United States who represents 54 countries,

thrown into the mix. Okay. Whoa. Even for not-easily impressed L.A.,

something was clearly happening here. Were theycoming in town to see our own version of the WallStreet Occupation (in Pasadena, Beverly Hills andHollywood)? Were they attending a new movie festi-val, awards show, or wild cultural celebration?

No, no, and no. They are here to talk business—practical, pragmatic Pan African business with theAfrican Diaspora, with the Los Angeles HarborCommission, with the Mayor’s Economic AdvisoryBoard, the Sixth Region Diaspora Caucus, the Centerfor International Trade Development, U.S. SmallBusiness Administration, and more. They are here aspart of the largest coming-out party for African eco-nomic development this side of the Mississippi andOhio rivers. They are here for the second annual PanAfrican Global Business and Trade Conference to beheld at California State University Dominguez Hillsin Carson.

Clearly, this is not the venue for those seekinglight-weight fare for the weekend. This is for theheavy hitters (no Dodgers allowed). Relevant confer-ence themes for many in Los Angeles who need toknow about economic alternatives include, “How theAfrican Diaspora can work together with the AfricanUnion to simultaneously focus on the economicdevelopment of the emerging economies of Africaand inner city communities,” and “How the AfricanGrowth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) can be betterutilized to expand relations between business ownersin the African Diaspora and continental Africa.”

For those who are somewhat familiar withAfrican Regional Economic Communities, includingCOMESA, EAC and SADC (Common Market forEastern and Southern Africa, East AfricanCommunity, and the Southern Africa DevelopmentCommunity), this is a perfect chance to interact withand engage representatives from those entities. Forthose in the know, it is through these African RECsthat 21st century Pan Africanism is now blossoming. The recent tripartite trade agreement approvedthrough the EAC, COMESA and SADC set up themechanism to transform the African economies ofmore than 26 countries and in excess of 600 millionpeople in the continuing search for an African com-mon currency, common passport, and commonintra-African market.

In Gov. Jerry Brown’s laterush to dispatch more than 140legislative bills before midnightSunday, Assemblyman MikeDavis had three bills to makethe cut—AB 420, AB 126 andAB 1329.

AB 420 requires theDepartment of Corrections tosubmit the last known address of inmates to theCitizens Commission on Redistricting every 10years and requests that the Commission deem eachinmate as residing at his or her last known address, rather than the correctional facility, for the purposesof establishing a population count when drawingdistrict lines. The bill was signed by Brown onFriday. It effectively ends prison-based gerryman-dering. Prior to AB 420 the state followed the prac-tice of counting prisoners where they were incarcer-ated rather than their last known legal address.

AB 126, co-authored by Assembly memberWilmer Carter (D-Rialto) ensures equity and trans-parency at all levels of the judicial selection process. It also increases fairness in the vetting process ofjudicial qualifications.

The signing of AB 1329 provides the CaliforniaDepartment of Public Health with the necessary

administrative tools to continue the operation of thestatewide California Cancer Registry. The Registrywill continue to provide the cancer community withclues about the causes of cancer, improved treat-ment methods, and the development of strategiesfor cancer screening and prevention. The latter twobills were signed Sunday.

A prophet of the streets

BY JAMES B. GOLDENOW CONTRIBUTOR

My kids don’t believe that Tupac Shakur wasn’talways a thug.

They’ve been blindsided by his immortaliza-tion on T-shirts, documentaries, handbags andcompilations. They see a one-sided Tupac, whichmass commercialism has fed them over the past15 years, but for many of us, we know there was amultifaceted genius beneath the tattoos and headrags.

In many ways, I grew up a child of Tupac. I remember seeing him for the first time as a

dancer for Digital Underground. He moved withfinesse and applied his background as a dancer-actor-musician to the tightest choreography whilebacking Humpty Hump. We didn’t know it then, but Tupac was well on his way to taking theindustry by storm.

From the first moment we heard his voicestream across the airwaves of BET in 1991, he wasours. Those initial songs, especially from the“2Pacalypse Now” album, were scriptures thattaught us how to be young men.

Tupac used his debut album as an opportunityto offer the same guidance and wisdom hereceived as a child of the Black Panther Party forSelf Defense. Tupac’s father, Billy Garland, was awell-known New York-based Panther alongsidehis mother, Afeni. Mutulu Shakur. His stepfather, led the Black Liberation Army, working alongsidehis sister Assata.

So, it was no surprise that the revolution wasthreaded throughout “2Pacalypse Now.” His les-sons on police brutality, teenage pregnancy, poverty, drugs and racism sounded like a manu-script for survival in urban Black areas.

When he spoke through “Brenda’s Got a Baby,”we listened. Having written the song for a 12-year-old girl who threw her baby in a trash can,Tupac gave us several messages to feed on whilefocusing on the issue of young Black girls havingsex and getting pregnant.

He brilliantly called attention to a historicalsocietal label of Black women as “welfare queens,”which became a repetitive oppressive term usedagainst members of the Black community.

“Brenda” also shed light on the absence offathers contributing to a cycle of broken families, resulting in children raised with an inherentlyunfitting relationship to older men. Sons wouldsearch for that male figure in the streets, whiledaughters fell into relationships with men basedon lowered expectations.

There were many other soul-shaking epistlesthroughout Tupac’s five years of releasing albumsthat helped to guide us through the early 1990s.“Dear Mama,” “Keep Ya Head Up” and theposthumous “Changes,” were some of the greatestexamples of un-thug material that saturated the

minds of young Black boys and girls. His music, especially on the debut album, fell

in line with earlier releases by Grandmaster Flash,Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, andKRS One. In many ways, Tupac was one of ourfirst tangible socially conscious West Coast rap-pers.

While his records were saturating the airwaves,Tupac’s presence on the silver screen was comple-mentary. His background in theatre was displayedin his earliest appearances on television shows like“A Different World.” He was a product of Harlem’s127th St. Repertory Ensemble, where he played inShakespeare dramas.

I remember seeing Poetic Justice for the firsttime in 1993, and I was blown away by his per-formance in the lead role. Tupac managed to tellthe story of many young Black men raised inurban areas like South Central, while adding anunmatched depth and brilliance to his character. He displayed the same artistic approach in “Juice,”“Above the Rim,” “Bullet,” and “Gridlock’d.”

I connected the way Tupac mastered his craftas an actor with his unshakable vocal delivery onrecords. Tupac, for me, was a return to NikkiGiovanni, Amiri Baraka and Gil Scott-Heron—aspokesperson for the streets. However, he taughtother rappers how to write about their conditionalrealities without glorifying the “thug” lifestyle.

Thus, Sept. 13, 1996, saw more than the loss ofanother talented artist—one of our very ownprophets was taken from us. That was the veryfirst time that our generation lost a social revolu-tionist, a drum major for change, a bullhorn forthe ghetto.

Tupac was our Malcolm X. While I don’t expect my kids to easily rid

themselves of their 21st-century ideal images ofTupac as a “shoot-em up” gangster, they will learnto respect his genius as much more than a thug.

Two local residents will help lead5,000 others in Heart Walk

Former competitive figure skater and entrepre-neur Toshawa Andrews has suffered 11 heart attacksin three years. The 37-year-old wife and mother saysher heart is slowly dying as a result of the attacks.

Durward Davis, who made the final seven in thethird season of the BET Gospel sing-off show“Sunday Best,” progressed from a diagnosis of pneu-monia to having a heart attack, and the work-a-holicdivinity student had to set aside his fears to find outwhat was making him sick.

Both Andrews and Davis will participate in the21st annual Los Angeles County Heart Walk Saturdaybeginning at 8 a.m. at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The program will include a 5k walk/run, freehands-only CPR demonstrations, blood pressurescreenings and post-walk performances by local talent.

Club celebrates giving away 100,000th book

BY JULIANA NORWOODOW STAFF WRITER

A program was developed at Gratts ElementarySchool in May 1999, that emphasized learning andreading in an interactive and fun environment. It wascalled the Gratts Reading Club. The success andgrowth of that reading club led to the formation ofReading to Kids later that year.

Reading to Kids is a grassroots organization thatbegan with a small group of volunteers, teachers, andadministrators who shared the same dream: to improvereading skills among the elementary schoolchildren ofLos Angeles. Dedicated to inspiring underserved chil-dren with a love of reading, the organization strives toenrich the lives and opportunities of these youth forsuccess in the future. To this end, Reading to Kidsgathers on average 759 children and 313 volunteers atreading clubs on the second Saturday of every monthat seven Los Angeles elementary schools.

At the monthly reading clubs, pairs of volunteersread aloud to small groups of children, while theirparents receive training on how to encourage theirchildren to read at home. Kids, parents, teachers, andschool libraries receive book donations at the end ofthe reading clubs. These are important donations, because 60 percent of low-income homes do not haveage-appropriate reading materials for children.

Since its inception in 1999, Reading to Kids, hasdonated more than 17,660 hardcover books to schoollibraries, and the organizations volunteers have spentmore than 113,529 hours reading to kids. This weekthe organization celebrates having given away its100,000th prize book to children who attend thereading clubs.

“The biggest accomplishment of this organizationis that we do so much with such a small staff, weactually only have two staff members and we relyheavily on our volunteers,” said Karen Kiss, managingdirector of Reading to Kids.

“The API scores of the schools that we partnerwith have all increased. We are only in these schoolsonce a month so we can’t take full credit for that, butwe consider ourselves an important component inthe increase. Being involved with the students has aprofound effect on them and by reading to them andshowing how enjoyable of an activity reading canbe—just as entertaining as video games—we makereading fun. The students come back eager to get anew book to add to their home library.”

Many students living near downtown Los Angelesreside in a densely populated area with numerousapartment and commercial buildings and little or noaccess to safe recreational areas. Many of the childrenin this area are from low-income families, some arerecent immigrants to the country and are Englishlanguage learners, and others have room for substan-tial improvement in their reading test scores. Helpingthese students is Reading to Kids’ highest priority.

“I couldn’t grasp it until I got here, but we come incontact with thousands of children and the effect thatwe have on them is so gratifying—that such a smallorganization could do so much for the community,”said Kiss.

A large part of Reading to Kids’ success is due tothe generosity of its donors, through grants, and manyof the books and craft supplies and other items neededto makes these reading clubs a success are purchasedby the organization. If you would like to assist in theirefforts and to learn more information about the organ-ization, visit the website at www.readingtokids.org.

sion in me for a society that will crush people and thenpenalize them for not being able to stand up under theweight.” That’s what people like Thomas, Connerly,Johnson and Cain do. They dismiss what America hasdone to the masses of Black people, then criticize Blackpeople for not being able to stand up to the weight ofcenturies of racial oppression—just because they them-selves escaped it. Then they make excuses for why con-ditions remain the same.

Speaking of losing your mind, the Taste of Soulfestival goes off this weekend. The Taste of Soul wascreated by radio executive, Ron Turner, who was thenational sales rep for KKBT, “The Beat.” The Beatwas planning a street fair in the late 1990s before the

station was sold to Cathy Hughes. Turner met withseveral community folk, including myself, to start thestreet fair under the new management, but Hughessold her station before the fair could be implemented.Someone else implemented it, but they didn’t createit. I hope my baby brother, Ron Turner, strolls downthe boulevard this weekend to take in his creation. But it says something for someone who won’tacknowledge when they get their ideas from othersand refuse to give them credit.

Herman Cain, and other stuff like that, happenswhen we let people who lose their mind then say anddo anything they want. Then we ask ourselves, “Whostole the soul?” SMH [Shaking My Head].

James Reynolds: ‘Daysof Our Lives’ star

BY GAIL CHOICEOW CONTRIBUTOR

James Reynolds has to beone of the busiest, most positivepeople working in Hollywoodtoday. You soap fans know who I’m talking about—Police Captain Abe Carver on NBC’s “Days of OurLives,” the network’s longest-running scripted series(45 years) to date.

Reynolds began in that role 1981, and for some 28years he’s kept the “Days of Our Lives” cast of charac-ters under the watchful, knowledgeable eye of the law.

However, after the first nine years Reynoldsmoved to the new daytime series “Generations”where he earned an Emmy nomination forOutstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. With thesubsequent demise of that series, Reynolds returnedto “Days of Our Lives” in 1991.

Reynolds, a former Marine, worked as a journalistin the corps but got the acting bug while attendingcollege. A friend talked him into auditioning for aplay, and he realized he liked acting, and went for it.

Ironically Reynolds says he never thought about

acting in a television soap opera, but he was fresh offthe CBS series “Time Express,” which starred theiconic actor Vincent Price, when he got the call fromthe soap producers. Always ready for an adventure,Reynolds says at that time in the ’80s it was the hey-day of soaps, and the daily dramas were hitting theirstride. He says, “I did it because it was a chance to dosomething I hadn’t done before.”

Reynolds had already amassed an impressive listof prime-time television and motion picture credits. From guest spots on such series as “Seinfeld,”“Highway to Heaven,” “227,” and “Hart to Hart” toappearing in such films as “The Magic of Lassie,”“The Foundation,” and “Hotline;” not bad for a smalltown guy hailing from the farming community ofOskaloosa, Kan.

In 2004, Reynolds received a NAACP ImageAward nomination for Best Actor in a DaytimeDrama for his role on “Days of Our Lives,” followedby a 2004 Daytime Emmy nomination for BestSupporting Actor in a Drama.

He admits that there have been “a lot of rockytimes” while working in Hollywood. He says“Anybody that survives in this business for any lengthof time … the rocky times are there. Fortunately I’vebeen able to survive all those,” he continued.

Reynolds says working on a soap was a great wayto have a family, and raise his son, including havingtime to coach a little league team, showing up at highschool events and spending quality time with his wifeand son. He describes himself as “a long-term guy”married to his wife 25 years, living in his house for 22years, and appearing on “Days of Our Lives” 28 years.

Despite his busy schedule, Reynolds heads FreeState Productions, a film and TV production compa-ny involved in producing documentaries, movies andmusic videos. And did I mention he enjoys directing

and performing onstage? He starred in“Buffalo Soldier” atTheatre/Theater; thiswas a taut drama aboutBlack U.S. Army troopsin the American West forwhich he was nominatedfor an NAACP TheatreAward. Unfortunately, this article doesn’t havethe space to list his stagework and his commitment to charitable work.

And don’t think his home state hasn’t noticed hisaccomplishments. Reynolds’ name was added to theKansas Historical Society’s list of famous Kansans, and he’s right up there with Langston Hughes,Amelia Earhart, President Dwight Eisenhower andBarry Sanders, just to name a few.

Reynolds says he’s “very proud to be the currentnational chair for the Department of Veterans AffairsSalute to Hospitalized Vets, a position he’s held forfour years. He tours hospital facilities around thecountry and participates in programs that drawattention to our soldiers.

Keep your eyes on NBC’s “Days of Our Lives,”because the producers promise to bring sweepingchanges to the show that are filled with romance andintrigue; rumor has it that big surprises will be com-ing to Salem.

And Reynolds is excited about “Law & Order:SVU” star Tamara Tunie, who joins the series for aspecial story arc.

I tried to get the lowdown, but nothing doing; wehave to tune in and watch. “Days of Our Lives” airsweekdays at 1 p.m. or your check local listing.
