The name of the game: participation
People feel happy when they have: Satisfying work to do The experience of being good at something Time spent with people they like The chance to be part of something bigger(Gaming the Future of Museums - a lecture by
Jane McGonigal)
How can museums make people happy?!
![Page 4: Overview Of Current Museum Presence In Social Media](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062616/54b48f844a7959ab458b456b/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Museums and Social MediaInstitutions need to enter these spaces with a strategy. Try
first to answer to the following questions: What audience(s) are you trying to reach, and why? What information do you want to convey to these people? What actions do you want them to take? Demographically, where do these constituents congregate
online? Do these virtual spaces provide the tools that will allow you
to circulate your message? Do the sites then provide ways for users to circulate their
message without too much further effort from us?

Why Twitter?! Twitter may be a better choice than blogging. There is no dividing line between producers
and consumers. The limits on expression level the playing
field. You are broadcasting to a network, not an
audience. You get immediate feedback. You can spend as much time as you like.

Sharing videos- YouTube

People, organisations, events and groups- the Facebook way
Facebook is a free social networking site that allows users to create a profile page or a page to communicate with others. Facebook allows users to share information via text and upload of videos and pictures from a PC or mobile device.
![Page 26: Overview Of Current Museum Presence In Social Media](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062616/54b48f844a7959ab458b456b/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
People, organisations, events and groups- the Facebook way
How could a museum have a Facebook presence? You can start a group dedicated to your institution. Groups
built around institutions allow you to provide news updates. The public can join your group.
Alternatively, you can create a page. People can become fans.
But…a much more effective way to put your institution in front of its constituents is to create an account for an especially wired and charismatic member of your staff (someone who would appeal to your target demographic) who will befriend users and keep them updated on your museum’s activities. Every time she updates her profile, all of her “friends” receive the update on their Facebook home pages.
The news feed makes people want to interact.

But also: connecting to peers
![Page 32: Overview Of Current Museum Presence In Social Media](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062616/54b48f844a7959ab458b456b/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
What is the social web about? expressing identity. It allows people to reveal a
tangible sense of who they are and what they’re interested in.
relationships and trust. The social web makes it easy to find and start talking with others who share your interests.
user-driven websites. The social web makes the ordinary person on the street important — anyone can post videos to YouTube, engage in back-and-forth with the authors of widely read blogs, or help write and monitor wikipedia. The social web allows users to be active, empowered participants in the production and distribution of media.

What are the costs? All these applications are free. The devices to be used are already in your
possession: PC, laptop, digital camera, mobile phone.
The real costs are: (a lot of) time a change of mentality good will dedication.

And the benefits?!
“free” PR a lot of friends (real
people, not numbers!) becoming part of a
community worldwide reach!
