PRELUDE Pierre Dandrieu Puer nobis nascitur (1664-1733)

INTROIT Philipp Nicolai Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (1556-1608) CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Arise! Shine bright O beloved of God. People: God’s light has come to reveal the Way in this new year. Leader: Arise! Shine bright O beloved of God. People: The Glory of God is spread before us. Leader: Arise! Shine bright O beloved of God. People: God’s light scatters the shadows of the world. Leader: Arise! Shine bright O beloved of God. All: May our hearts be warmed by the glowing light of our God. HYMN No. 151 KINGS OF ORIENT We Three Kings of Orient Are WELCOME PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord of the living light, may the courage of the Magi be our guide. Open our eyes to the signs of your love and grace that surround us. Inspire in us generosity that we might give extravagantly. Give us faith to say yes to your invitations. Forgive us God, for our shortsightedness, for being enticed by power, for being led by greed, by failing to see all the ways in which your love has changed this world. Have Mercy, O Lord so that we too might follow the star to Bethlehem and meet you again, as if for the first time. SILENT CONFESSION

SOLO Robert MacGimsey Sweet Little Jesus Boy (1898-1979) Iris Fairfax, soprano

Sweet little Jesus boy, born in a manger, Sweet little Holy child, we didn't know who You were,

Long time ago it seems, You were born, Born in a manager Lord, sweet little Jesus boy.

Didn't know you'd come to save us all

To take our sins away, Our eyes were blind we did not see,

We didn't know who You were.

You have shown us how And we are trying,

Master, You have shown us how Even as You were dying,

This world treats You mean, Lord, Treats me mean too

But that's how things are done down here We didn't know it was You.

Didn't know You'd come to save us all, to take our sins away

Our eyes were blind, we did not see, We didn't know who You were.

THE LORD’S SUPPER INVITATION TO THE TABLE THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise… SANCTUS (sung by all) HYMN No. 562 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE LORD’S PRAYER WORDS OF INSTITUTION FORETASTE OF THE HEAVENLY BANQUET Communion will be received in the pews today. There will be gluten-free bread in the center of the tray. The Deacons and Elders will bring the trays to your pew and pass it to you, first the bread and then the cup. Take the bread when it comes to you, pass the plate on, and partake of your bread when you are ready (this demonstrates how Christ comes to each of us individually). When the trays of glasses come to you, take a glass, pass on the tray, and hold the glass until all are served. Then all will drink together (this demonstrates the unity of the Church Universal).

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION (Unison) Holy Triune God, we thank you for this meal that proclaims the peace and healing of the nations. We thank you for this meal where a little is enough to change our lives; where a little is more than enough to feed those whose hearts yearn for communion in community. May this bread and fruit of the vine nourish us so that we may grow in the faith and knowledge that in you, we are one. Amen.

The cover artwork is The Magi Journeying to Bethlehem, a mosaic that is part of the Palatine Chapel in Palermo, Sicily. In the 12th century, when this chapel was built, Sicily had three distinct cultures, Byzantine, Norman, and Fatimid (an Islamic caliphate), all of which are represented in the design of the chapel. The mosaics are attributed to Byzantine artists and are renowned for their subtle coloring and elongated proportions.

General Announcements Coffee Hour No More! - Fear not! Our time with snacks after worship is not going away. It is being renamed to better reflect the meaning of the gathering. The Congregational Life Committee invites you to FELLOWSHIP HOUR, formerly known as Coffee Hour. For many at Overbrook, this time with food and friends and welcoming of newcomers feels like an extension of worship. It's more than coffee! It's fellowship! So, we'll celebrate it that way going forward with a new name. With that being said, we are still in need of Fellowship Hour Hosts for the following Sundays: January 12, and 19. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Peggy Kaercher at [email protected] or via text at 484-429-4719 or Pat Ogundele at 610-668-1309.
