A Letter From Ms. Foote...April 17, 2020
Team,
I hope you are staying safe and healthy during this time. The OEC team is continuing to work hard to understand how best to serve, support, and teach students during this time. Thank you for your patience as we transitioned from ZOOM to GOOGLE CLASSROOM/MEET per the district’s recommendation. For the next TWO WEEKS, from April 20th - May 1st, students will continue their education. Continuity of Education is the overall term for any educational practices that occur in the event of a prolonged school closure. It is important that students have the opportunity to maintain and develop skills while away from the customary school environment. This can be done through Planned Instruction or Enrichment and Review.
Enrichment and Review consists of informal activities to reinforce or extend students’ prior learning. No standards and skills are addressed through Enrichment and Review.
What we are prioritizing right now is the need for everyone to self-care AND continue to LEARN. Our students’ learning experiences and well-being during COVID-19 are our responsibility. While we will continue to focus on checking in on the mental well-being, health, and safety of our community, we will also prioritize continuity of learning.
Beginning on May 4th until June 12th, students will receive NEW LEARNING MATERIALS from their teachers via PLANNED INSTRUCTION.Planned Instruction is formal teaching and learning similar to that which occurs in a classroom setting. Within this process, teachers use planned courses of instruction of new concepts/skills aligned to grade level standards. Teachers assess the learning of their students and make adjustments to instruction based upon student progress. In order to receive grade and credit, students must attend regularly and complete the course requirements. More information in regard to this will be shared as soon as I receive it. Right now, we know the next two weeks are enrichment and review only.
A reminder from last week...The humane option is the best option. We will prioritize kindness and supporting each other as humans. We will prioritize simple solutions that make sense for the most.We will prioritize sharing resources and communicating clearly.
Don’t try to do the same thing online. Some assignments are no longer possible.
Some expectations are no longer reasonable. Some objectives are no longer valuable.
Remain flexible and adjust to the situation. No one knows where this is going and what we’ll need to adapt.
Everyone needs support & understanding in this unprecedented moment. We are going to take this pandemic day by day and week by week.
As soon as information becomes available, I will share it with you via email, instagram, the Jag News, and any other suggestions you have for ways I can share information with the community. If you have further questions, you can call the SDP Hotline at 215-400-5300, email the district at [email protected], visit www.philasd.org/faqs or email me at [email protected] or call me at 610-731-6039. A responsive approach to communication with students about our classes and collective situation is vital right now. This pandemic will be over in time. We will beat this together.
In gratitude, health, and safety,
Ms. Foote

Looking for Student Experience to be Published!
i’m reaching out on behalf of The Philadelphia Citizen, Philly's only nonprofit, nonpartisan, solutions-focused media outlet. As part of our ongoing coverage about how COVID-19 is affecting Philadelphians, we're interested in hearing how Philly students in grades K-12 are feeling, and spending their time now that school is closed. We'd love to hear from students about the following, BEFORE WEDS, 4/22: (It's fine to skip questions you don't feel like answering!)
-How have you been spending your time? What are your days like now?-Are you struggling to get any services you used to rely on from school, like food or health services?-Are you struggling to balance family responsibilities with your at-home workload?-What do you think most adults don't understand about what this experience is actually like for students?-Are there any new activities, projects, hobbies, or routines you've started now that you're at home more?-What's most frustrating about knowing you're home for the rest of the school year?-Have there been any silver linings (unexpected GOOD things) about being at home?-What do you miss most about life before the pandemic?-What would you most enjoy doing the first day you can go back to your regular routine?
Please include your name, your grade, the name of your school, and contact information for your parent or guardian. Please also include a photo of you (a selfie is fine) at home, doing the activities you mention above. If you could please reply before Weds, April 22, to [email protected], that would be great.

Our Vision and MissionThe vision of OEC is to be a model school
in the School District of Philadelphia by 2020 as rated by the School Progress
Report (SPR) (we scored 68% for 18-19 school year and we must earn 75% to be rated a model so are just 7% away from
reaching that goal) while creating the least restrictive environment for students with
special needs.
Additionally, 100% of our 8th graders will have the opportunity to attend the high
school of their choice. We will accomplish this through:
-Ambitious Instruction-A Supportive Environment
-Involved Families-Collaborative Staff
-Effective Leadership
Our mission is to prepare students to become positive, productive citizens who can live independently and with purpose to serve others and to ensure proficiency (or above) for all students in each subject
area and development of strong character.
