As parents, it often feels that we have no control over what and when children access their technology and we have no way of comparing the digital ‘parenting’ that took place when we were children and what is required for our children. Technology has changed the way we live, work, play, learn and interact. We live in a digital world that isn’t about to change, so as parents, we need to find ways to ensure technology enriches our daily lives. Attached to this newsletter is a Safety Tip Sheet for parents to refer to in guiding their child’s technology use at home. The most important piece of advice is to remember that YOU are the parent and should set in place rules and guidelines for use of technology – the same kinds of guidelines and rules you would enforce if your children were going to the park or crossing the road. As a school it is difficult to police inappropriate use of technology and social media in the home. It is important that parents are monitoring their child’s use of social media and the in- ternet at home, ensuring children are refraining from bullying, defamation of others, sending inappropriate texts, messages, photos and pictures. Children under the age of 13 should not have access to social media such as Snapchat, Instagram or Facebook. School Uniform Visitors to the school and people in the community often comment on how the children at Sa- cred Heart look admirable in their school uniform. It is thanks to the parents who go out of their way to take note of the requirements of the uniform policy as well as ensuring they are informed of the days when sports uniforms are worn. Below are the guidelines for the sum- mer and sports uniform. Please take note of these to support the school so your child feels a part of the school community.

Project Compassion

First Week of Lent

Janaki is a young entrepreneur from Nepal, who has turned her life around. Growing up in a world of poverty and disadvantage, cou-pled with a forced marriage at the age of twelve, she was in a very vulnerable position. Even more so when her husband died just two years into their marriage. With the help of a Caritas Australia sup-ported program she is now running her own successful sewing busi-ness and has become an inspirational community leader.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2018 and empower vulnerable young people like Janaki in Nepal to build a just future for themselves, their families and their com-munities.

A Just Future starts with your support! You can donate through Project Compassion boxes/envelopes, visit www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phone 1800 024 413. Digital Citizenship In comparison to your own childhood, children from this generation have access to a great range of technology at their fingertips 24/7. It is important that parents are monitoring their child’s use of social media and the in-ternet at home, ensuring children are refraining from bullying, defamation of others, sending inappropriate texts, messages, photos and pictures. Children under the age of 13 should not have access to social media such as Snapchat, Instagram or Facebook.

School Uniform Visitors to the school and people in the community often comment on how the children at Sa-cred Heart look admirable in their school uniform. Things to Embrace during Lent

1. Tongue biting – practice restraint and humility. Let the criticism die in your month, let someone else

speak first, give others space to voice their opinion.

2. Early Rising – If your day is too busy for God, rise early to enjoy a few quite moments together.

3. Half-serves – we really don’t need nearly as much food/clothing/music/TV/stuff as we think. Practice

taking half serves and let hunger bite occasionally.

4. Secret Giving – there are so many in need – be generous, then double it …and enjoy God’s blessings.

5. Apologise – seek unity in all circumstances. Apologise when you have wronged someone… even when

they started it!

6. Forgive and let live – set yourself free. Forgive someone against whom you hold a grudge. Let them

go. Let yourself go. And start living again.

7. Gratitude – give thanks every day, all day. Thank God, thank others. Gratitude is one of the most ef-

fective ways to lift your spirit and increase your awareness of God’s presence.

8. Blessing – bless those you love. Bless those you dislike. Bless those you envy. Bless God for the joys.

Bless God for the sorrows. In all things, bless.

9. Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) – nothing will inspire more delicious delight than doing an RAK –

compliment a stranger, assist an elderly person, top up the parking meter, bring sunshine into someone’s life.

10. Listen – stop talking and listen…to your spouse, to your children, to the lonely neighbour, to the

homily, to the sounds of creation, to God’s word in your life.

We are now accepting

enrolments for

Kindergarten 2019

If your child was born between

1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015

they will start Kindergarten at the beginning of 2019. Enrolment forms can be obtained from the school office and must be lodged with us as soon as possible. Inter-views will commence early in Term Two 2018.

We are pleased to have the RAINBOWS Programme once again at Sacred Heart this year. RAINBOWS offers children from families who have experienced a major loss, either through the separation/divorce of parents, through the death or illness of a family member, or who have experienced any other major family transition, the opportunity to meet in a weekly support group of 3 - 5 students over a period of 12 weeks.

It has been found that when something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. If a parent dies or divorce occurs, not only do the parents grieve but the children do too. Due to their age and short life experience, children find it difficult to verbalise their feelings.

If you feel that your child(ren) may benefit from the programme, and haven’t already participated this year, please collect a consent form from Mrs Hall in the school office. Consent forms need to be signed by a par-ent before the child is eligible to participate in the programme. Please return signed consent forms to the school office by Friday 23 February 2018.

The sessions will be held at school during school time, with a trained adult working with each group. Our trained staff this year are Amanda Banks and myself as the co-ordinator at our school. If you have any queries or concerns, please ring the school office on 9251 3000.

When you receive the vouchers, please place them in the Sacred Heart Sports for Schools box located at Coles Forest Lakes, or alternatively, please place them in the box located in the School Office.

For every $10 spent at Coles during the program, you will earn a Coles Sports for Schools voucher. The more vouchers our school collects, the more gear we can receive. Thank you for support with this Pro-gram.
