G&G International Coordinates Barge Loading at Turning BasinShore cranes bound for Venezuela recently were loadedaboard a deck barge at the Port of Houston Authority’sTurning Basin Terminal and Brown and Root’s waterfrontfacility. G&G International coordinated the loading of thecargo, which also included Caterpillar road-building machin-ery and water pipe loaded at another U.S. port. The shorecranes were placed aboard the STEVENS 2501, a newlybuilt U.S.-flag deck barge, and were discharged inMaracaibo.
The 250-by-80-foot barge is owned by Stevens Towing Co.The shipment represented the third full barge consignmentcoordinated by G&G International Inc., a Houston-basedinternational freight forwarding company. G&G specializesin the movement of U.S.-flag barge cargoes and offers awide range of air, land and sea transportation services.

The Port of H()ust()n Authoritynow offers a discount rental 1"ate forsteamship lines that use the TurningBasin Terminal container crane exten-sively.
Port of Houston conln]issione1srececltly amended Tariff 8 t() allo\x the discount. Now, any line that hasused the crane for at least 500 hoursover a 12-month period will qualifyfor the discount. The 12-month peri-od must begin on Jan. 1 of each year.Major Savings
The discounted rate represents a27.7 percent savings for crane users.The regular tariff charge for rentingthe crane is $360.50 per hour. Thediscounted rate is $260.50 per hour.

J.P. Turner Sr.Dies at Age 91
Jerrold Parker Turner Sr., who ush-ered the Harris County Houston ShipChannel Navigation District through14 years of unprecedented growth,died on June 24.
Turner was the Navigation Dis-trict’s executive director from 1957 to1971, during which time the port’s fa-cilities and tonnage experienced dra-matic growth. The Navigation Districtis the former name of the Port ofHouston Authority.
Soon after his appointment, Turnerlaunched a massive railroad improve-ment program and let contracts forconstruction of a public bulk nmteri-als handling plant and new wharvesand sheds at the Turning Basin. Healso was instrumental in the develop-ment of the Bayport Ship Channel.
A Chicago native, he once servedas president of the American Associa-tion of Port Authorities and the GulfPorts Association. He was director ofthe Alabanm State Docks bet%re hebecame executive director of the Portof I touston.

ART Vessel Transports Fire-fightingEquipment from Houston to SyriaThe M/V KRONSHTADT recently sailed fromHouston carrying a large shipment of equipment,including a mud plant, to be used in extinguishinga massive oil well blowout in Syria. The shipmentincluded cylindrical tanks, mud tanks, compres-sors, tools, steel tubing and other equipment. Firefighters planned to use the mud plant to force acement-based material into the site to seal off theblowout. The KRONSHTADT is operated byAmerica-Russia-Turkey Ocean Navigation, whoseagent is Gulf & Atlantic Maritime Services. SHEMSIShell Export Materials Services) coordinated thepurchasing and delivery of the bulk of the materialfor this movement. SCAC (Texas) Inc. shipped thecargo as agents for AI Furat Petroleum.

Kyokuyo Line’s AMBER LILY DischargesApples and Beef at Jacintoport TerminalThe AMBER LILY, operated by Kyokuyo Line, recentlymade her maiden voyage to the Port of HoustonAuthority’s Jacintoport Terminal. While in port, the shipdischarged 30,000 boxes of apples and 134 pallets offrozen beef from New Zealand at the HarbersideRefrigerated Services facility at Jacintoport. The appleswere distributed to regional grocers, and the beef toU.S. restaurant chains and Mexican wholesalers.
