Fancher and co. primed For more success in 2007-08 aFter record-setting season. Expectations and excitement are at an all-time high for the Appalachian State University men’s basketball program with nine players and the entire frontcourt returning from last year’s team that won a school-record 25 games and made the program’s third-ever postseason appearance. Along the way to the record book, the squad won the program’s eighth regular-season Southern Conference title, the San Juan Shootout Championship and an ESPN Bracketbusters game at Wichita State. However, that team graduated five seniors and three starters, including the entire backcourt and all-SoCon selection D.J. Thompson. While replacing that group is certainly an unenviable task, head coach Houston Fancher has the luxury of one of the deepest frontcourts in the SoCon and an extremely talented corps of returning players and newcomers that eagerly await the chance to write their own chapter in Appalachian basketball history.

FROntcOuRt“Our inside guys are proven and the onus will be on them to carry us until the guards get more experience. With our strength inside, rarely will you see us take a shot without an inside touch. We’re going to make an emphasis on getting the ball inside to break defenses down. Plus, with our depth, we still have the ability to play at our same up-tempo pace.” - Houston Fancher.

Jeremy Clayton• A two-year starter and two-time SoCon all-tournament selection, Clayton brings tremendous athleticism and a knack for making big plays on the floor.• An incredible leaper, he won 63 percent of opening tips, led the team in deflections last season and had 30 dunks. He also needs 49 blocks to become ASU’s all-time leader in the category.• “Jeremy is ‘Mr. Excitement’ for us. He creates a lot of excitement and enthusiasm on the floor with his ability to change the momentum in a game.” - Houston Fancher

Donte Minter• ASU was 20-4 with him in the lineup last season and he has since conditioned himself over the summer to build stamina and play in longer spurts at a greater pace.• Can put up potential player of the year type numbers after averag-ing 15.3 points on 59 percent shooting in three postseason games.• Possesses an infinite number of ways to score around the basket with a soft, left-handed shot and a strong back-to-the-basket pres-ence.• “Donte is a go-to guy for us. He’s someone we can give the ball to time and time again to break down defenses both with his scoring and his strong passing out of the post.” - Houston Fancher.

Davis Bowne• One of last year’s biggest surprises, the former Division III player and walk-on started 29 games for Mountaineers in 2006-07.• A tough, gritty player and son of a coach, he is consistently solid and technically sound on the floor in everything that he does. • “Davis has proven ability in the post. He’s often a forgotten man out there and he takes advantage of that. He’s not the first guy on anyone’s scouting report, but I wouldn’t trade him for anybody. He really makes our offense run on the floor.” - Houston Fancher.

Tyler Webb• An unselfish, team-oriented player that is one of the strongest players on the team, he owns the team’s bench-press record.• Saw his role diminish last season with the emergence of Minter and Bowne, but is still one of the team’s top options on the bench with a wealth of experience.• “Tyler is a guy that can step in at any time for us. He’s a winner that’s been here for two seasons and gives us a strong presence inside.” - Houston Fancher.

Ike Butts• A strong, physical presence in the paint, he will have the chance to contribute immediately as a freshman.• Despite his size, he moves extremely well and should have no problem playing in the Mountaineers’ up-tempo system.• “Ike is an immovable force around the basket that has a soft touch and loves to play physically. He looks forward to the contact under the basket.” - Houston Fancher.

Jay McMillan• A fifth-year senior that knows the system well, he continues to push ASU’s post players every day.• Has continued to get stronger and more physical with an excellent outside shot for a post player.

POint guaRd“The emergence of our guards will ultimately determine how good we are and how far we go. There’s a lot of unproven attributes on the perime-ter and we need guys to step up and accept some roles that were vacated.” - Houston Fancher.

Ryann Abraham• Enters his sophomore season as the incumbent at point guard after serving as D.J. Thompson’s understudy last season.• In his reserve role, he played in all 33 games and averaged 2.5 points per game.• He finished the season strong, shooting 59 per-cent and averaging 4.3 points in the team’s final nine games.• “Ryann knows what I want and what I expect from him on the floor. Combining that with the skills he already had, we expect him to be a good point guard and we’re confident turning the pro-gram over to him.” - Houston Fancher.

Donald Sims• Will push Abraham for playing time at point guard.• A 20-year-old freshman, he brings two years of successful prep school experience to the team.• As a very skilled shooter, he gives ASU two point guards that can score and force defenses to guard them.• “He’s a proven winner and his track record shows that. He’s lost 11 games in the last six years. All he does is win.” - Houston Fancher.

Donterious Hughes• An athletic southpaw that is continuing to learn the nuances of the point guard position after pri-marily playing as a scoring guard in high school.• “Donterious is a very gifted athlete that can score in a number of ways. Defensively, he’s as good of a defender as we have at point guard position.” - Houston Fancher.

wingS“Our guards on the wing are just as talented as any group on our team, they just need the game time to develop. They’ve been working hard all summer to develop chemistry and are making strides. Between the four returning guys at the position, I think we can find the minutes to be very successful” - Houston Fancher.

Eduardo Bermudez• ASU’s most experienced shooting guard with two years of action under his belt, he is expected to see increased action this season.• A fiery, passionate player, he led the team in charges drawn last season and is an talented scorer.• “Eddie is ready to take over a leadership role as far as pro-duction is concerned. He’s given us a lot of good minutes the last two seasons, but we’re ready for him to step up and be a more productive player and we think the increased min-utes will provide him the opportunity to do that.” - Houston Fancher.

Kellen Brand• Showed flashes of brilliance as a freshman and continued to demonstrate his versatility as the season progressed. • A defensive stopper, he is expected to draw the team’s toughest defensive assignment game in and game out.• “He’s a guy that can really score the ball and works well in our up-tempo system. We’re excited about his future and think he’ll be a very good player for us in the future.” - Houston Fancher.

Doug McLaughlin-Williams• With the team’s increased depth inside, he will move out to his natural position on the wing. However, from time to time he will be counted on to contribute at power forward as well.• Shoots the ball well and brings a vast amount of experience after finishing 2006-07 on a high note.• “Doug is someone that will really help us at both spots this year and we’re expecting him to have a super senior season.” - Houston Fancher.

Jeremi Booth• Earned a medical redshirt after suffering a foot injury two games into the 2006-07 season. He was able to participate in the majority of practices last season and gain valuable expe-rience in the system.• Has a strong, big body for a guard and runs the floor ex-tremely well and shoots with range.

A.J. Highsmith• Coming off a redshirt year, he is a much-improved player that has continued to develop physically. • Is a very strong shooter with a quick release.

J.R. Archer• A tough player that provides versatility at guard, he will be expected to continue to develop and constantly push ASU’s more experienced perimeter player.• Is one of eight Boone natives to wear the Black and Gold in the program’s history.
