The project site is located on a part
of land for the Jericho Agro-Industrial Park
(JAIP Stage-I) planned and scheduled to be
developed soon at suburb of Jericho Municipality
which is approximatery 8 km away from the Dead Sea.
After the completion of the Project in July 2012, the electricity
being generated by the grid-connected PV system installed by the
Project is supplied to the existing distribution line operated and maintained
by the Jerusalem District Electricity Company (JDECO) that will indeed
supplement the demand of electricity supplies in Jericho.
The objectives of the Project are to promote clean energy utilization and to achieve
stable power supply including financial aspect in Palestine through the operation of the
grid-connected PV system as well as to contribute to reduction of greenhouse gases emissions.
This Project is also expected to contribute to the development of JAIP as a renewable energy
supply facility. Moreover, it aims that the Project will help the Palestinian that is groping for
cooperation in measures for climate change with international organizations and an
application of Clean Development Mechanism.

Dr. Omar Kittaneh
Chairman of Palestinian Energy Authority
Since it was founded, the Palestinian Energy Authority (PEA) was keen to provide electric energy to all Palestinians. Therefore, PEA has developed a policy for the organization and development of the electricity sector in Palestine; this was through the approval of the General Electricity Law in 2009, which stressed the importance of encouraging the search for alternative energy resources. Accordingly, PEA prepared the general strategy of renewable energy as an important part of the system resources to meet the growing needs of electric energy in a cleaner and more secure approach.
The PEA has set a clear goal through the Renewable Energy General Strategy for the year 2020; this goal is represented by generating the equivalent of 10% of the electricity produced locally from renewable energy resources. This will finally lead to raise the renewable energy share in the total energy consumption by up to 25%.
To achieve this goal, necessary legislations and regulations have been ratified to develop and promote the use of renewable energy, and the Palestinian Solar Initiative was approved for the time period (2012-2015).
The construction and success of Jericho’ s solar plant is considered the first important step towards the practical application to implement the renewable energy strategy and to disseminate its use. The success of this plant will lead to the generalization of this experiment in other governorates. All this will increase energy security, stabilize its prices and will develop the technical, scientific and economic capabilities of the Palestinian people.
Finally, I would like to thank the Japanese government for providing this grant which enabled the Palestinian people to accomplish the first step towards energy independence. Also I would like to thank all those who contributed and participated to the success and completion of this national achievement.
