CONSTELLATION

Constellations are groups of stars that look like pic tures in the sky if they are connected. There are 88 constellations in all. Some can only be seen at certain times of the year. To make your own constellation, cut out several stars and glue them onto black paper to make a pic ture. Then connect them with chalk or a white crayon like a dot to dot. You could also use star stickers to do this project.

MOON WITH CRATERS

The Earth is orbited by the moon. The moon is kept in orbit around the Earth by the Earth’s gravitational pull. In 1969, Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. To make your own moon, cut two matching c irc les or crescent moon shapes from newspaper. Staple the pieces together most of the way, leaving enough unstapled to stuff the moon with tissue paper or shredded newspaper. Stuff the moon carefully and finish stapling shut. Cut several small pieces of yarn in different lengths. Dip the yarn in glue and form into c irc les on your moon. These will look like craters after the moon has been painted. After you have attached your craters and allowed them to dry. Paint the entire moon, both sides, light gray. You can add a small toothpick American flag to your moon to represent the flag that Neil Armstrong placed there when he first walked on the moon.

PAPER PLATE FLYING SAUCER

To make a flying saucer, staple two paper plates together with the eating surfaces fac ing each other. Paint both sides of your creation whatever color you would like your flying saucer to be. Next, paint the bottom and sides of the outside of a paper bowl. It can match the plates that you painted or can be a different color. This will be the top of the flying saucer where the aliens fly the flying saucer from. If you would like your flying saucer to have antennae, poke two small holes in the bottom of the bowl. Fold a pipe c leaner in half and poke through the holes in the bowl from the inside of the bowl to the outside. Place a piece of tape over the pipe c leaner inside the bowl to keep it from falling out. Glue the bowl, face down, to the center of one side of the plates that you stapled together. Add windows around the side of the bowl by cutting squares of paper and gluing them on. You may want to add brightly colored dots around the outer rim of the flying saucer to look like bright lights.

PAPER TOWEL ROLL TELESCOPE

To make a telescope, you will need an empty paper towel roll. Cut a small square of c lear plastic wrap, large enough to cover one end of the paper towel roll and overlap a bit. Place glue around the end of the telescope and cover the end with the plastic wrap, pushing the wrap down into the glue. Make sure to smooth any wrinkles out that may be over the tube opening. Choose a colored piece of construction paper and cover the paper towel roll. Decorate your telescope with small stars and moons and any other designs you might like to add.

ALIEN

To make an alien, you will need an empty toilet paper roll. Paint the toilet paper roll the color that you would like your alien to be. If you do not want to paint, cover the roll with colored construction paper. Next, cut out the attached alien head, arms and feet from the same color that you chose for the alien’s body (unless you want your alien to be very colorful!). Draw a face on the alien’s head and it to the side of the tube towards the top. Fold the arms back on the dotted line. Apply glue to the smaller portion of the arm that is folded. Looking at the alien’s face, glue the arms to the sides of the tube. To make the feet look like they are sticking out in front of the alien, fold the feet up at the dotted line. Place glue on the portion of the feet that would be the ankles and stick to the inside of the base of the tube. Decorate your alien however you wish. Glitter, markers, stickers, etc.

To make your own rocket ship, you will need an empty toilet paper roll. Paint the toilet paper roll the color of your choice, or cover it with colored paper or aluminum foil. Cut out a c irc le about 4 inches in diameter from paper the color of your choosing. Make a cut half way through the c irc le. Form the c irc le into a cone and secure with glue. Glue the cone onto the top of the tube. Color and cut out the pic ture of the astronaut in the window and glue onto the side of the tube. Attach strips of red and orange streamers or construction paper to the base of the rocket ship to represent the flames seen at lift off. Decorate your rocket ship with glitter if you wish.

SHOOTING STAR

To make a shooting star, cut out the star on the next page from yellow construction paper. Decorate your star with glitter. Attach streamers or curling ribbon to the star. Attach a pencil or doweling rod to your star to help you wave it and make it look like a shooting star. Don’t forget to make a wish!
