Dear Friend, Exciting progress has been made in the ongoing planning of our 2014 Abidjan Initiative to Ivory Coast. My heart has been gladdened at the continued opportunity presented to us to reach the leaders of this nation that has had a difficult political past.

Our Peace & Reconciliation emergency response to South Sudan has also been a great source of encouragement. The news we hear from this new nation is troubling but I have seen first -hand the hope that comes from showing Christ’s love to the people of South Sudan. We cannot hope to solve all this nations woes but we can come together to bring peace where there has been pain and hope where there has been despair.

Now more than ever I am sure that the AE message of together WE CAN is more relevant than ever. I have seen it first hand in both Abidjan and South Sudan and many other places as I travel around this great Continent of Africa.

...........

Abidjan is a strategic city in sub-Sahara Africa and with less than 3 months away from the proclamation week, we can echo the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 16:9, a huge door of opportunity for good work has opened up for AE in West Africa.

In spite of all the challenges, Pan-African Missions Director Songe Chibambo, AE DRC Team Leader Leonard Kiswangi and the team on the ground have made great progress through the planning stages.

The Steering Committee is led by Pastor Aphelly and Pastor Ouattara of ROC Foundation who are spearheading the leadership initiative on the ground in Abidjan. They have been meeting regularly to pray and plan for the outreach scheduled to happen between 31 August and 7 September 2014.

“I am glad because we are not only planning and waiting for the proclamation week of the mission; the Lord has opened notable doors for us to minister to the leaders of Ivory Coast. For instance, on one visit we spent time encouraging and praying for two former Prime Ministers at their offices in Abidjan.” (Stephen Mbogo, ITL, African Enterprise)

Networking in key leadership circlesThe AE Team has had many opportunities to share the vision with key leaders in the Ivory Coast including important encounters with two former Prime Ministers, Charles Konan Banny and Pascal Affi Nguessan.

Charles Konan Banny, former Prime Minister and one of the political heavyweights in the Ivory Coast is

currently Chairman of the National Council for Peace and Reconciliation.

Banny values AE’s Abidjan Leadership Initiative; he perceives that a neutral mediator can help solve the political issues in his country. After the AE Team’s visit to his residence he affirmed: “Your coming to our country and your initiative is adding value to the huge and complex task of peace and reconciliation in the Ivory Coast. This initiative needs to be embraced by all Ivorians. I treasure your input as servants of God reconciling Church, religious, community and youth leaders. My biggest challenge is to reconcile the politicians so I will appreciate AE’s input in this process given your experience in the field and strategies used in other countries. We will cooperate; leaders have a lot of responsibilities and if they have partly contributed to the issues of disunity in our country, they should also be included in the solution process.”

After our team met with Banny in Abidjan it was evident that he is desperate for a solution to the political challenge in his country. Staff members of the Ivorian Council of Reconciliation shared that many other well-known Christian leaders have ministered in Ivory Coast but provided little help to this problem. Others added that world renowned experts in reconciliation, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Kofi Atta Annan, past Secretary-General of the United Nations, Graça Machel just to mention a few, have been involved in the mediation between the opposition and the current government without making substantial headway.

“It appears that the situation is becoming more and more precarious because the politicians seem not to find common ground,” stated AE PAM Director, Songe Chibambo. He went on to say that “prayer is a vital component to making headway in September.” (continued...)

Whilst much has been reported on our Pan African Mission to Abidjan and the South Sudan Initiative we must not forget all the many other local missions and outreaches happening through our local teams right across Africa. Some highlights in 2014 include:

1. Matadi, DRC June 2014 The first phase (training of trainers in discipleship) is complete, where 96 people from 36 churches attended. It was heartening to see

(from the front page...)The AE Team also met with Pascal Affi Nguessan, former Prime Minister and current

leader of the main opposition party (FPI) which was the party of Laurent Gbagbo also a former president of the country. AE DRC Team Leader Leonard Kiswangi said:

“We were encouraged by his overwhelming response to our visit. We shared AE’s vision and our previous achievements in South Africa, Rwanda, Uganda and currently in South Sudan. Their first questions were ‘Who is funding you?’ and ‘Are you sponsored by the South African government?’. We made it clear that we are a Christian organization with Support Offices. Our answer gave them the assurance that we are not a government agency and we fully abide to biblical principles and one of our objectives is to create a conducive environment for peace and prosperity for all Ivorians.”

Pascal joined the Secretariat-General of the FPI in 1990 and became Deputy Secretary-General in 1994. After the December 1999 military coup, he became Minister of Industry and Tourism under military leader Robert Guei. Following the overthrow of the Gbagbo regime in April 2011 Nguessan was arrested and held at a detention centre in Bouna, northeast Ivory Coast.

We thank God for this open door and believe this is the opportune time for AE to bring the Gospel of peace to leaders in Abidjan. Most of the leaders have understood that there is an urgent need for prayer and they are appealing to Christians worldwide to back them up. We also feel that as AE Family, we should declare a period of fasting and prayer to intercede for our Ivorian brothers and sisters.

“Ivory Coast is at the crossroads and needs God’s intervention; without prayer we think the task will be impossible.” (Mission Steering Committee Coordinator)

AE PAM Director, Songe Chibambo, echoed the sentiments of the AE team and the wider Mission Steering Committee: “We would like to express our deepest gratitude for the valuable financial support we have received so far. These funds have helped us to achieve our goals in the preparation for the Abidjan 2014 Leadership Initiative. May God bless our supporters and this initiative. Thank you!”

Your opinion is very important to us. We were so touched by the many hundreds of you that responded to our recent survey. We thankyou for your honest and valuable feedback which will be invaluable to our decision making process. We at AE endeavour to spend your generous gift well and our focus is always to those in need across Africa.

associate evangelists join the team all the way from Kinshasa. The second phase (proclamation) takes place late October. Prior to the proclamation phase a second group of partnering churches will be trained in discipleship. AE DRC is very encouraged by the financial support from the local church who contributed over $1,000 toward the mission costs.

2. Mankessim, Ghana October 2014This year’s main mission for Ghana is scheduled for Mankessim, a town located approximately 85 km west of Accra on the main road to Sekondi-Takoradi. It is planned to take place from 15 to 27 October, 2014. Planning is in progress and we are working to get through to the various churches and pastors in the town as well as establish teams of volunteers to help us meet our goals in the community. Highlights of the mission will be an opening rally, a ten day film outreach, a medical outreach, five days of intensive stratified evangelism to schools, hospitals, market places, streets, government establishments, etc., a community leadership seminar and a closing rally.

3. Isiolo Kenya, July 2014 Currently underway more coming soon!Isiolo in the northern part of Kenya is the main mission outreach this year. “We have seen a great deal of progress in the planning and we are excited by the prospects of touching this Muslim dominated area for Christ.” (Edward Ngaira, AE Kenya TL)

“While walking late at night, David an AEE prayer mobilizer, came across a young man known as Joseph who works with a security company. He shared the gospel with him, led him to Christ and then invited him to the meeting the following day. In the middle of the meeting, David asked whether the man was there and called him forward for prayer. As the man went on his knees, a young girl also rushed to the front, and kneeling beside him, said “I’m also not saved, please pray for me as well that I may receive Jesus into my life.” What an amazing touch of God’s Spirit! This was confirmation to us that God is in control, and was an encouragement to everyone involved in the upcoming Muhanga Mission.” AE Rwanda, Muhanga Region.

The second phase of African Enterprise’s South Sudan Peace and Reconciliation Initiative wore a humanitarian face. In May members of the AE team visited the Kakuma Refugee camp in the north western part of Kenya where many South Sudanese have fled to. According to UNHCR, Kakuma Refugee camp is currently hosting more than 36 000 South Sudanese refugees who have fled their homes due to violence while the camp itself is holding an estimated 149 345 people. This is way above its capacity so there is chronic overcrowding and a lack of resources for all those families. AE was able to get into the camp to distribute blankets, mosquito nets, shoes for the children and other much needed supplies to help ease some of the need. More than 7000 South Sudanese currently living in the camp were helped through this initiative. These families were sincerely touched by this gesture of love.

This initiative followed the recent successful peace and reconciliation forums being held right across the city of Juba with clergy, youth, army, police and political leaders. AE has been running two day events with the goal of teaching people who had been affected by the violence how to live peacefully, forgive and seek reconciliation with their fellow countrymen and women. Counselling sessions were also made available to those most impacted by the conflict. The nation has been deeply marred by the acts of violence that have taken place. Please join with AE in prayer for the nation of South Sudan. Pray for peace and reconciliation among its people and that God will bring healing to their hearts.

Our work in South Sudan continues, please check out our website at www.africanenterprise.com.au or our blog at www.aeinternational.wordpress.com for project updates and reports.

THANK YOU!

4. University Mission, Ethiopia, March 2014This mission took place from 21 to 30 March. The mission once again proved that Christian students in universities are called to be “evangelists”; to be lights in their campuses. This mission was marked by high levels of attendance, with an overflowing crowd. Most of the time university students use the Nicodemus approach of coming to Jesus. After the mission is over, they come slowly one by one to Christ. Forty two students in total made commitments at the initial mission and we have encouraged the Christian students to keep stirring the waters (John 5:4) so that the “sick” get into it and get healed.

5. Lira, Uganda, March 2014A large Anglican church in the Lira region of Northern Uganda led a mission facilitated by AE team leader Paul Wasswa Ssembiro and the rest of the AE team. It was held from the 13 to 16 March. During the mission more than 1000 people gave their lives to Christ. A strong partnership is being pursued with the church for future evangelistic efforts in the region. Please pray for the work of follow up.

As many of you know June is a significant time in the AE calendar as we endeavour to raise funds for our Aid and Development work across Africa. Thanks to your generous support and prayers we have exceeded our target of $200 000.

Through your generosity street children in Ghana will receive an apprenticeship and a foundation to a better life. Students in Tanzania will receive HIV and AIDS awareness thereby positively changing their sexual behaviour, dignity and health. Women in Malawi and Kenya will be able to leave a life of prostitution and start their own enterprise- a wonderful example of holistic transformation. This is just a small sample of the countless other areas where you have brought big smiles to the faces of children, parents, husbands, wives and families through your ongoing support during the month of June.
