NoHoValley Village Community of Schools Administrator Monthly MessageFirst I want to once again wish everyone a happy healthy and safe 2021 Last year was difficult for so many of us in so many different ways For our mental physical and emotional wellbeing I would encourage all to focus on what we can do verses everything we cannot do - and remember we are in the home stretch Vaccines continue to be distributed and the safer at home orders were lifted Our local restaurants are once again able to serve our community safely outdoors and many small businesses that have been struggling need customersrsquo support to remain open As Californians letrsquos do all we can to contribute to and jump start our economy once again
What a time to be from California From Alex Padilla joining the Senate to Vice President Harris and her husband Doug and letrsquos not forget Los Angeles based poet laureate Amanda Gorman At the young age of 22 she inspired our nation to once again hope and dream of a united human species This is a new day and a deserving moment to celebrate the Biden Administration and welcome change of leadership that will help represent all Americans We all know that there is much to do to solve the historic problems that have befallen our state as well as the rest of the country It was not that long ago that the nation and the world ldquolooked westrdquo to California for ingenuity creativity and economic resourcefulness Letrsquos continue to push forward and work together better than ever I have a long standing belief in the strength and power of human kindness ldquo As much as we need a prosperous economy we also need a prosperity of kindness and decencyrdquoCaroline Kennedy
Stay well and be safeMaria Nichols

Heading into February will begin with celebrating Black History Month kicking off a Week of Action for Black Lives Matter at School The activities may look different in each classroom but the intent is to honor lives inspire minds and empower students to believe in their own influential legacies they will one day leave behind Students can look to role models who are the epitome of courage and audacity like Dr Terrence Roberts who was one of the Little Rock 9 who said ldquoHuman beings have the capacity to choose to change We could do it if we wanted we just havent mustered the will to do it If what you already know hasnt moved you to change then changewhat you knowrdquo With a new sense of purpose reinforcing habits of mind like learning from mistakes and continued support in the classroom students can sustain focused determination to demonstrate resilience
Students are resilient after the toughest of times but they have a better chance if they have these factors in their toolkit connectedness sense of safety ability to calm self-efficacy community efficacy and hope When students are connected to at least one adult at home or on campus who believes in them and will never give up on them then students feel a sense of hope which allows them to carry on in the face of challenges Critical hope can be fostered within the classroom by way of regular attendance high expectations and a belief in oneself to achieve goals that one would never imagine possible They can do this
